History list

2000-08-10 Thread Parker, Kevin

This may actually be best achieved with a JavaScript solution so I apologise
if some regard it as OT.

We're deploying one of our large manuals to the web (which is currently
distributed as a Win 3.1 help file - those were the days) as HTML. One of
its features (the win help version) is that it has a history function and
users can back track. I want to try an emulate this for the last 5 or so
pages the user was on.

I know you can do this by using a href and using history - 1, history -2 etc
but rather than have a simple image or bit of static text with a link I want
to actually try to produce a small list with the name of the page they were
on, linked to that page (the link can use history -1 etc but I want to
actually get the name of the page if I can). After all users won't remember
what the page was 5 clicks ago but it will help them if they can see the
name of the page. The history function in JavaScript doesn't appear to
provide this info.

Any clue please.

That's weird. I just tried this:

Comment this out using cfmodule

file2.cfm:

and it worked fine. Maybe in some circumstance it doesn't work? But in this

I believe that the ODBC drivers for SQLServer7 are actually native drivers.
Microsoft just put an ODBC interface on it. I think I heard this being
discussed at CFUN-2K.

It got to the point that our clients "requested" (AKA ordered) us to remove
them from their sites. There customers were complaining quite a bit. We
removed them and never looked back. In any instance now where we would
consider using a CFGRID - usually in an admin section, we use and
warn users that IE is required.

I am in the process of investigating ways of using flash instead of

Re: CustomTag /DIRECTORYat a SHARED HOSTING ISP ??? HELP!!!

2000-08-10 Thread David Cummins

There was no error, it just did not work the same as when run without cfmodule.
As in:

...

produced different output to

...

In getcontent.cfm, it set thistag.generatedcontent="", which did not seem to
work when calling with cfmodule.

Perhaps cfmodule sends a complete copy of the environment to the tag, whereas
the tag would normally receive a reference to the actual environment (and so
could modify it).

What are you disagreeing with? I have it working fine. Using is

RE: Problem carrying over form values.

You can try replacing the " with some string you know the person will not
enter, like §, or some other character entity. Then you can get that data
from the hidden form field and convert it back before entering it into the
database.

Hey guys, I was hoping you could help me on this one... Ok, on one of my
forms I have a textarea field that people will type stuff in. Then, they
press submit and it goes to a page that displays what they typed and lets
them 'approve' it before actually entering it into the database. It all
works fine unless they type in something like this in one of the text area
pages:

The dog said, "Hey now!"

Then when they press 'submit' and go to the page that lets them look
everything over before they add it into the database I carry the fields over
my putting them on that page as hidden fields. The problem is, the " "
around the words Hey now! will make one of the hidden fields look like this:

So the only thing that makes it into the database is "The dog said, ". How
do I get around this? What is the correct way to carry the form fields
across multiple pages without this error happening? I know I could do
something like replacing all the " " with nothing, but I'd like to keep the
formatting of the person's original message. Can I do this? Please help,
thanks!

2000-08-10 Thread rkeniger

Yes.

You should set up a variable (preferably in your application.cfm) that sets a
random number and append that to all your URLs, eg:

Click here to go to the non-cached page

The URL will end up something like: newpage.cfm?nc=12314. The dummy argument is
ignored by the browser.

This will force the browser to get new pages because all the URLs are different.
I had big caching problems with Mac Internet Explorer 4.5 before implementing
this.

Re: CustomTag /DIRECTORYat a SHARED HOSTING ISP ??? HELP!!!

2000-08-10 Thread David Cummins

I would actually disagree with that.

Someone in our office tried calling a custom tag that alters the generated
content with cfmodule, and it did not work correctly, even though it worked when
called the standard way. He used at the end too.

RE: "Need your help desperately..."

2000-08-10 Thread Scott, Andrew

I would agree with this, for the simple fact I hold no degrees in anything.
But I am a very quick learner, and work hard to achieve what I set out to
do. I have 20 years programming experience, and have dabbled in a lot of
languages. I have a very impressive resume, and the ability to sell my
skills.

I did think the CF certificate would make it easier to say you know CF, but
what about programming logic this is a lot harder to learn and comes from
experience. I see the Allaire Certificate for CF a waste of my time, only
because I believe in my ability to do the work and think that my work in the
industry will be enough to keep working in it.

It works!!! Thank you so much to everyone who helped along the way. My
goal is to one day be 1/10th as helpful to the list as the list has been to
me. At this point (given how much I get and how little I now know), that's
a huge goal. Thanks again.

I am using Outlook Express, and have it set up to reply to messages in their
original format, which in this case is HTML, or to compose new messages in
plain text. For some reason the list is not properly handling the mime
conversion. To see if perhaps this is fixed, I have changed it to send in
plain text only, regardless of the format of the incoming message. It has
been annoying to me, because other messages besides mine have been turned to
mush.

Since CFLOCK topics seems to be all the rage recently...

If I CFINCLUDE a template within a lock, will the included template be
locked as well?

For example:

I'm guessing that the code in file2.cfm WILL be locked, due to the nature of
CFINCLUDE. How about for CFMODULE?

I'm in the same situation. I place a customtags folder under the root of the
site. Annoyingly, I can't use absolute paths (beginning with a /) to point

You can probably use ADSI and VBScript to do it. There is a way to
manipulate Outlook using ADSI

I want to know if anyone has ever attempted the impossible and how it was

a mass email to, but the Access database did not contain their email
addresses. What I was thinking is since they all work for the same company
maybe I could do a query from MS Outlook and populate my database with their
emails from Outlook, doing a simple WHERE statement that would match their
First and Last names. Is this possible or should I get started on manually
entering their addresses??

There is a lot of conflicting information on how to properly set up an
Access datasource. For me anyway, I've found that Access sites are much more
stable when the database connection is NOT persistent, and the max number of
connections is set to around 5.

There was in article in CFDJ that said ALWAYS maintain database

set mine to 2 just to be risqué. :)

RE: Crazy MS Outlook/Access Question

2000-08-10 Thread Norman Elton

Try this (it seems to work in Access 2000):

File -> Get External Data -> Import

Under "Files of Type:", choose Outlook()

It will walk you through importing your address book into a table. From
there you should be able to query the address book.

This is assuming you've got all the addresses stored locally on your
computer. If you're connecting to a server through LDAP (to an NT server
presumably), you'd have to use which is no fun.

Reply if this helps... Good luck!

I put my custom tags in the folder with the templates that call them. CF
looks there first. I tried having my ISP put them in the CustomTags folder

The ISP will probably have you copy your custom tags directory under your
root. You can either copy the custom tag to which ever directory you wish to
call the tag from or you can put the tags in one central directory and use
cfmodule to call your tags.

We're trying to move a web site to a designated box with our host

installing CF on a machine using this SP. The person who said this didn't
specify what the problems were...I'm having to rely on it second-hand.

What problems are there, and are there ways around it?

RE: Newbie: Sessions

2000-08-10 Thread Jason Aden

I find session variables much more useful than cookies. I mainly use cookies
for storing information about the user for the next time he comes to the
site. I always put the user's profile in the session scope, shopping cart
data, queries taylored to that user, etc. You can store any datatype in the
session scope, which is not true of cookies.

Let's say you had a query that got all the products John Smith had bought in
the last 3 months. Where are you going to store that? If you only use that
data on one page, just store it locally. But if John can click on one of the
puchases and get more info, then go back to the full-listing, you don't want
to be running that query every time he clicks a link. If you store it in the
session scope, you don't have to run the query every time. Just use
#session.queryName.columnName# instead.

Typically, when it returns "No such object", that's because there is, in
fact, no such object in the schema. Try using another LDAP client to
connect; most mail clients provide some sort of LDAP lookup capability. If
you can, get one of the IT guys to do it in front of you with a standard
LDAP client. If they can do it, then it's a problem in your code; if not,
it's a problem in their schema.

RE: Alert

2000-08-10 Thread Jason Aden

Are you sending the user to another page, or continuing with processing
after this? If so, remember that javascript is client-side. Any CF will
ALWAYS run BEFORE this javascript is executed. With a CFABORT, you stop
there, the page is sent to the user, and he gets the alert. Without that,
all processing continues as normal.

This article only applies to Microsoft Access. If you're using Access,
maintaining database connections may cause memory leak and stability
problems. Of course, if you're using Microsoft Access, you may have all
kinds of problems that you can't fix by dropping database connections.

RE: in one query refers to 2 different odbc sources

2000-08-10 Thread Jeremy Allen

Not at the same time I do not think that is possible
from a pure CF standpoint, perhaps the DB can
do it.. but ill assume it cant..

You can do two seperate queries with one query based on
data from the second.

SELECT junkID
FROM SomeTable

SELECT barID
FROM SomeOtherTable
WHERE Foo1.recordcount < 10

Something like that might help? Or you may consider
merging databases or making the data more friendly
for this type of situation.

Just some thoughts, i realize thats not a solution
to your problem so these are just suggestions :-\

K,

Fair enough. The expression removes all characters that aren't a digit or
decimal point(0-9 or .).

rereplace(vartocleanup, "[^0-9\.]+", "", "ALL")

Whether you prefer that or Don's newstring=replace(oldstring,",","","ALL")
depends on the source of the numbers. If you have some legacy data or other
controlled source where you know the only issue will be commas, Don's
replace will do ya just fine. If there's a chance you might face other
non-numeric characters (currency symbols, etc.), the rereplace would be more
appropriate. Right tool for the job and all that.

I have a code similar to following code:

When the condition is true,
The pop up window appears only when I have an

If I remove the statement, then the user is
not getting the alert pop up dialog box.

This seems to be little strange.
Can someone tell me where I am going wrong?

Problem:
We have a database schema as follows:
Column Headings: Date Param | Value
Row 1 # usr
8
Row 2 # usr
9
Row 2 # sys
80
Row 2 # sys
71
Row 2 # idle
12
Row 2 # idle
20

What I want to do is build a line graph that shows how all these 3 vary
even though the values that I want to differentiate on are all in the
same column (Param).

Any ideas?
Thank you.

Re: Newbie: Sessions

2000-08-10 Thread Joyce E. Evans

Hello,

Argument for using session variables:

We have a company directory with free listings for members of the natural
food products industry (very recently released). We will give out login and
passwords to companies (upon approval of their company as verifiable) so
that they can either change information (address, phone numbers etc) and
also so that they may "Upgrade" their listing to incorporate a lot of tools
(very similar to the Thomas Register). When a user logs in we cannot be sure
they are doing so from their personal home/office computer and since we do
not want to leave a variety of differently named cookies that would contain
information about the company on machines in public kiosks we decided to
manipulate this information using session variables that store database
values and some temporary values that a user may change when logged in via a
form.. We use the session variables because they maintain state throughout
the 15 odd screens that a user may go through (depending on how much they
upgrade) in order to pull info user specific data from a database and from
forms which then allows the user to update their information.

This system has worked well for us. If I had to maintain any other type of
variables from page to page in my application I think this project would be
a lot less portable (right now adding a component is really easy since it is
very fuse box like and the session variables get set in one file which get
included in all the pages of the application.'

If you had asked me 6 months ago if I would ever use session variables I
probably would have said "NO" but this was one place I have found them very
useful.

RE: QUERY QUESTION

2000-08-10 Thread Kevin Marshall

Kelly,

All I can do is guess since I don't know your db design but here goes:

-Run your first query
-Run this query

SELECT COUNT(SI_Item_ID) AS SI_Item_ID_COUNT, SI_Item_ID
FROM SI_ITEMS2
WHERE SI_ITEM_ID IN (#SI_Item_ID#)
AND SI_Opsrpt_ID = #ValueList(qgetsi.SI_Opsrpt_ID)#
GROUP BY SI_Item_ID

-output like this

#SI_Item_ID_COUNT# - #SI_Item_ID#

I would also suggest that you not do SELECT * but specify the fields you
want instead. It may take a little more work but will make debugging
and/or interpreting your code much easier.

Problem carrying over form values.

2000-08-10 Thread ColdFusionKid

Please help,
thanks!

interesting but some of their claims seem, well unsupported in
some cases (slow index creation in sql server, sorting, subsets)
and are flat wrong (the sql server ranking for instance) in others.

Hi,

I am trying to add a bunch of numbers to get a total value. It works fine
unless someone uses a comma to separate 'thousands':

Ex. 10,500

How do I get rid of the comma before I add it up??

Can anyone enlighten me as to the latest version of the WDDX COM object?

I can't find anything on the Allaire site that shows that anything has

The one on my machine is version 1,0,0,1 dated 9 April 99.

Wow, take back what I said in my last message . . . I could have sworn the
last time this came up I tested it, and it worked . . . val("10,500") DOES
NOT equal 10500. It must be because CF thinks 10,500 is a list, but
val("10,500") comes back as 10.

Slap me silly on this one . . . go with the "cleanNumber" setup mentioned by

Problem with counting???

2000-08-10 Thread Kelly Matthews

Ok here are my current queries, thanks to Ben I got that part working.
Query 1:
I pass a date range:

SELECT *
FROM SelfInspection
WHERE SI_dt BETWEEN #CREATEODBCDate(form.date1)# AND
#CREATEODBCDate(form.date2)#

That works fine. then I have this next query, with a sub query, that checks
the SI_Items2 table
to see what items where checked for each qgetsi.SI_OPSRPT.ID.

SELECT SI_ITEM_NAME
FROM SI_ITEMS
WHERE si_item_id IN (
SELECT si_item_id
FROM SI_ITEMS2
WHERE SI_ITEM_ID IN (#SI_Item_ID#)
AND SI_Opsrpt_ID = #qgetsi.SI_Opsrpt_ID#)
Group by si_item_name

Ok for the query above its deal with 2 tables one is SI_ITEMS which
simply have an SI_ITEM_ID and a name SI_ITEM_NAME
the 2nd table SI_ITEMS2 has the item id SI_ITEM_ID and the report
number SI_OPSRPT_ID this table gets updated when someone fills out
a report if they select 3 items when filling out the report the ONE report
number is plopped in to SI_ITEMS2 with each item id. SO if there were
3 items selected when entering report 5 it would enter:
SI_OPSRPT_ID SI_ITEM_ID
5 12
5 15
5 16

And then you can refer back to table SI_ITEMS and/or SelfInspection
to get the particulars about the ITEM ID or the REPORT ID. So now
I want to run a report between specific dates that will show how many times
an item
was reported on within that period.

Ok lets say the item I wanted to run a report on was Rubber. (although
someone may want to
run a report on multiple items too_
The 2nd query I posted above will run for EACH qgetsi.si_opsrpt_id since
I have it within the tags.
So the results look something like:
qgetitems (Records=1, Time=0ms)
SQL = SELECT SI_ITEM_NAME
FROM SI_ITEMS
WHERE si_item_id IN (
SELECT si_item_id
FROM SI_ITEMS2
WHERE SI_ITEM_ID IN (5)
AND SI_Opsrpt_ID = 5)
and then if it finds it again:
qgetitems (Records=1, Time=0ms)
SQL = SELECT SI_ITEM_NAME
FROM SI_ITEMS
WHERE si_item_id IN (
SELECT si_item_id
FROM SI_ITEMS2
WHERE SI_ITEM_ID IN (5)
AND SI_Opsrpt_ID = 14)

So say it found rubber twice. Now in my output. How do I get that count. I
messed around with COUNT
but being that it runs each query separately for eacy report id i didnt see
a way to count it properly.
I just want the output to be something like
>From this date to that date: there were 2 Rubber problems.
what am i missing?
Kelly

I would recommend Nate Weiss' CF_TwoSelectsRelated or CF_ThreeSelectsRelated
tags which perform the functions you request; your preselections will be
based on their order in the query rather than an absolute selection, but I
think they'll do what your looking for.

Subject: dynamically updating one select list based upon the selection
in another

I have an update form in which the the user can choose an option from a
select list. When this form is initially displayed, the current info from
the database is automatically selected. This field happens to contain the
names of various departments in our division.
Each department has a default individual assigned to it (meaning that when a
department is selected from the list, the information submitted will
automatically be routed to the default person for that group).

The field below that is a dynamically populated select list of all of the
people in our division. If a user so chooses, they can override the default
person assigned to a group, and specify someone else from this list.

Now, here's what I want to do. When the form is first displayed, I want both
the department select list AND the people list to have the current value in
the db displayed (i.e. the department it will be routed to and the default
contact person's name in that department).
If, however, the user changes the name of the department to route to, I
would like the list below it to automatically then select the default
contact person's name for that department.

In a nutshell, the first list will drive what is selected in the second
list, but I want the second list to be independent (the first list will not
change what is selected if I make a different selection in the second list).

I'm assuming I will have to (ugh) use a javascript for this? Admittedly, I
am neither a javascript guru nor a coldfusion guru. Can anyone provide me
with some direction on this?

Thanks in advance!
Terri

RE: CFFile access problem

2000-08-10 Thread mherbene

I wouldn't be surprised if, even with just one copy of the code executing,
there would be a delay between when you delete and when you can write; this
would be up to the OS and I don't think CFLOCK would help. You could
CFTRY/CFCATCH in a CFLOOP so you wouldn't have to build in a delay:

Could you use CFFILE append instead of delete/write? Or log to a DB which
takes care of these problems for you?

Good point. I've noticed that some of the file contention problems
seem to disappear if I use a loop to introduce a brief delay between a

nothing at all in Netscape on Macs.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a workaround/fix?

Calling all Crystal Report Gurus

2000-08-10 Thread Mike Deane

Problem:
We have a database schema as follows:
Column Headings: Date Param | Value
Row 1 # usr
8
Row 2 # usr
9
Row 2 # sys
80
Row 2 # sys
71
Row 2 # idle
12
Row 2 # idle
20

What I want to do is build a line graph that shows how all these 3 vary
even though the values that I want to differentiate on are all in the
same column (Param).

Any ideas?
Thank you.

Comma/Number Problem

2000-08-10 Thread S R

Hi,

I am trying to add a bunch of numbers to get a total value. It works fine
unless someone uses a comma to separate 'thousands':

Ex. 10,500

How do I get rid of the comma before I add it up??

EX. 10500

Thanks

RE: CFFile access problem

2000-08-10 Thread Gene Kraybill

Good point. I've noticed that some of the file contention problems
seem to disappear if I use a loop to introduce a brief delay between a CFFILE Delete
and
a CFFILE Write operation on the same file. Is that to be expected, and should CFLOCK
solve that problem (it seems that there are still some file contention or access
problems).

Re: Printing with Javascript function

2000-08-10 Thread James Taavon

Tried the code, but did not print. So what I did was start from scratch
with what I thought would work right, but it still double prompts me,
once when the window is first open and then a second time after hitting
"OK" in the browser print window (if using Netscape). I will keep
trying. Oh, you were right, the first alert message to print does not do
anything as you suspected.

I am trying to understand sessions and trying to know when I should use

read about sessions online?

Also, I was told not to use them at all by one of the guys in the office. Is
there a reason why?

Thanks

dynamically updating one select list based upon the selection in another

2000-08-10 Thread Terri Stocke

Terri

Connecting with CFLDAP

2000-08-10 Thread Gallagher, Clare

I have been using the softartisans nta_user.dll to validate users against
their nt domain accounts for access to our corporate intranet. We have just
been taken over and I have been asked to validate users against an LDAP
server instead. We set up a new LDAP server and I am having trouble getting
this to work and wanted some troubleshooting advice.

My tag reads:

If I plug in the bigfoot server I get a result but when I use my local
server it returns "No such object" - the IT guys assure me there is data in
there and I have seen some of it. I know that cn is a valid attribute. I
tried using a login and password but the result doesn't change.

Can anyone help me with this??

Re: Verity vs. Freetext

2000-08-10 Thread Tom

A product I use for full-text indexing and searching is called textdb
(www.webest.dk)

It's a small and cheap product. It's not as straight-forward to use as
mssql fulltext, but it's furociously quicker than mssql or oracle (and
presumably verity with comparisons of it being slower than sql7).

I have a db with 500,000 records containing descriptions ranging from 5k to
1 meg of data, and ANY search I do is finished within half a second. I can
do a wildcard "a" search, or a very complex conditional query using "sounds
like" operators, and still get my results back in that amount of time. Not
sure if version 4 is out yet, but version 3.whatever didn't support phrases,
the new version does (and is just as quick as before).

Building the full text index also blows away the competition. It's not as
rich in features as teh others, and has a couple other limitations - but raw
speed (both building, updating, and retrieving) blows ms sql and oracle
(context stuff and intermedia) out of the water. I can build an index in
about 20 minutes on multiple fields against the 500k record database - this
is from scratch.

It works as a com object, so you need to use cfobject (which I have sample
code for it) - but this still works very quickly.

Not sure about how it works with thai, but it's very impressive nonetheless.

well, that's my 2 cents.

Tom

RE: QUERY QUESTION

2000-08-10 Thread Kelly Matthews

Ok here is my perdicament. Yours worked fine

SELECT *
FROM SI_ITEMS2
WHERE SI_ITEM_ID IN (#SI_Item_ID#)
AND SI_Opsrpt_ID = #qgetsi.SI_Opsrpt_ID#

however what I am really trying to do is get a count.
So say there are 3 SI_OPSRPT_ID's
and i pass 5 item_ids i want to do a count of how many times
each ITEM shows up within those 3 reports.
I'm still somewhat new at getting things to query and display properly.
would want the output to be something like.

>From this date to this date (i pass the date range thats what determines how
many SI_opsrpt_id's will be included):
There were 7 instances of this Item.

Re: First JSP Fusebox Site?

2000-08-10 Thread !jeff!

We are not directly sharing any variables between jsp and CF. However, we
transfer some variable values via URL, cookie, and through the
database. There are lots of ways to share data.

Occasionally, we'll make an HTTP request from CF to JSP, or vice versa,
with the params in the URL. The receiving script will then take the
params, set local variables, and execute some code, and give the response
back via the http request.

we also have the ability to read CF client variables from JSP (it's just a
query to the data source). However, we decided not to attempt to set or
update client vars.

Also, CFOBJECT can be used to access java directly, although we are not
using it.

Re: "Need your help desperately..."

2000-08-10 Thread Karl Simanonok

Angel, I've never see a 'Brain Dump' site that you might be referring to
so I can't comment on that. But I know there are many kinds of exams
for which there exist study materials, sample questions from old exams,
etc., that sometimes are even recommended by the people who create the
real exams. As long as nobody's trafficking in current questions it's
not cheating.

'In University' (you must be not from the US) I never once took an exam
that I had any expectation had exactly the same questions on it as a
prior exam. Professors always ask new questions for each exam, or at
least reword them so students can't simply memorize answers from an
earlier exam and cheat that way. The only few exceptions are
standardized tests like SATs used for college entrance screening, for
which the questions are the same for a long time and are therefore
guarded closely against the kind of cheating that the CF developer's
exam is vulnerable to for the same reason.

In college of course people study from old exams to get some kind of
idea about what to expect on the next exam. Enlightened professors
sometimes make old exams available. A very enlightened graduate
department I was in (Physiology, UC Davis) even maintained collections
of old exams in the library that students could check out, and they were
encouraged to by the professors. This made the playing field level for
everyone and was very constructive. The professors took them into
account so that they never re-used old questions exactly as they had
appeared on previous exams. Similarly, there are books of sample (old)
SAT questions that many people use to study from, but these never
contain the questions for the current exam. However, in no case is it
considered 'not cheating' to traffic in specific questions and/or
answers for a current exam (which is what we're talking about with the
CF certification exam), whether it's the SAT or any college exam. And
yes, anybody who does THAT is definitely 'cheapening' the efforts of the
honest test-takers. That's similar to buying a term paper from one of
those low-life services that sells them to cheaters.

The fellow who emailed me didn't ask 'was it hard or was it easy', he is
clearly looking for clueless people to feed him specific questions from
the CF certification exam. Thats an attempt to cheat, pure and simple.

Regards,

Karl Simanonok

Ehhmm..

You think that looking at "Brain dump" sites is "Cheating" and diluting
the
worth of the ACPP exam?

In University..did you ever go through Past Papers for the courses you
were
doing?

Or ask the people that have done the exam before what sort of questions
came..
was it hard..
was it easy..
what should be you're focus in the exam..things you should watch out for

etc.??

Do you think that people who did that were "cheapening" their University

exams?
Do you think they were cheating?

Just curious.

RE: QUERY QUESTION

2000-08-10 Thread Ben Forta

Robert, actually, that would not work. As the same query name is used each
time each subsequent query would overwrite the prior one. If you ever need
to execute queries in a loop like that you must be sure to programmatically
adjust the query name as well (perhaps by using a counter).

You can't execute 3 SELECT statements in a single query that way. You should
combine them into one statement that might look something like this:

SELECT *

WHERE SI_ITEM_ID IN (#SI_Item_ID#)
AND SI_Opsrpt_ID = #qgetsi.SI_Opsrpt_ID#

(IIS) Customer file uploads - restrictions of file types

2000-08-10 Thread Dan Haley

We are getting requests from our customers to upload files to a password
secured area of our site so they can share them with other users from their
company, as well as with our internal people. The intent is for files like
Excel, Word, and Powerpoint documents. Some of the restrictions we need to
do are pretty straightforward, like who can upload, who can delete, total
file size, etc., but what pitfalls do I need to watch out for from a server
security standpoint? We are on IIS 4.0, Windows NT 4.0 SP5, CF4.5 ENT, with
plans to go to Win2000. Is it as simple as restricting certain executable
file types?

All advice is truly appreciated . . . unless Dave Watts sends me more code
from our site . . . whoops . . . :)

Thanks,
Dan
