Backups for co-located Cold Fusion servers

For those of you running Cold Fusion servers and database servers in a co-location 
facility, I'd like a survey of how you are backing up your systems.

Do most people just have a tape drive in the system and run over to the co-lo facility 
once a week to pop out a tape and pop in the next one?
Has anyone tried backing up to a NetApp Filer or NFS mounting drives over the Internet 
for backup?
How about Internet backup services?

the CF administrator

hi,
   When we access the ColdFusion Administrator, we straight away get to the
Administrator software that loads up on IE, right?

   Now, I want to load up the administrator from my dedicated server to my
machine elsewhere and administer the server, without me actually logging on
to the server using PCanywhere etc , and then loading the adminstrator .

Is this possible ...? I think it has to to do with configuring IIS
webserver..

any Ideas ?

Here's a couple of tips which may be worth considering. I don't consider
myself a security expert so perhaps others on the list may agree/disagree
with some of these suggestions.

1) If possible, seperate the Database from the Web-server. Then use IPX/SPX
on the Web server to connect to the SQL Server machine. You can then add a
blocking filter on your router to block all incoming and outgoing IPX
traffic and make sure IPX is not set up on any proxies/firewalls. If set up
correctly this should pretty much eliminate any traffic directly to the
database except from your Web-server. If possible use non-routable IP
numbers on your LAN (some thing like 192.168.x.x) and use NAT (Network
Address Translation) on your router. This makes IP spoofing much more
difficult for a hacker. IP bans are only useful if a hacker is unable to
spoof their IP address. Also if the external IP number a hacker see's is
different to the IP address range in use on your LAN, it makes it
considerably harder to a hacker to scan ports on your network.Have a look at
Steve Gibsons "Shields Up" web-site http://www.grc.com

2) Remove all rights from the tables you wish to use for storing the numbers
and use stored procedures. This means that users can't link to the tables
from an ODBC product like Access and read/modify tables.

3) If you are going to separate your CC numbers by splitting the first 12
digits from the checksum, you could create a  "View" of your UserID and 4
digit fields and give a stored procedure select rights only to this View.

4) Use a stored procedure with Insert rights only when first creating the
record. The script for collecting the CC number should use SSL.

5) Once a user has entered their number,never show them the first 12 digits
again, sounds obvious but you would be amazed by the silly things people do.

6) Finally some "in-house" processes will need to read CC numbers for
processing. Place any scripts which have Select rights on the first 12
digits in a separate virtual folder. Make these scripts read-only and place
an IP ban on them (only allow 1 or two machines on the LAN to have access to
them).  If you are using your own scripts for CC processing and not a bought
in solution, add NT security to these scripts.

I hope I haven't gone over the top here. I also have a doc  that I got from
the MS web-site called "Authentication and Security for Internet
Developers". Mail me if you would like a copy. Bit of a joke MS lecturing on
security when there products have been riddled with security holes.

One thing that we have done in the past is to split the number into two
different tables, both encrypted. The first table, had the last 4 digits,
and would be displayed to the customer like:

   3456

And prompt them to enter the first 11 or 12 (AMEX or Non-AMEX). Then the
Java servlet for ClearCommerce would retrieve the 11 or 12 digits from the
2nd table, decrypt it, and match it to what the customer had.

You can implement any variance of this you like, as this type of situation
also helps with unnecessary viewing by employees who do not need access to
that info.

I use stored Procs as much as possible (as you should - much quicker).  I
would certainly suggest doing what Heather suggested by putting the @ before
the dbVarName.  also remeber that it does matter what order you declare your
params in CF.  They must be declared in the same order as they appear in the
SP.

So, my question is, are there any licensing issues with this FREE

If so, I'm gonna join and get Enterprise. Why spend a couple Gs to 
upgrade to Enterprise when you can do it for 495.00?

OK, firstly it helps immeasurably to know which database driver you're
using

Secondly, if they are different drivers then it's more difficult than if
they are the same - SQL Server will talk to others, but not as nicely as
it
does it's own

IF you're using SQL Server, then it's easy

select t1.*, t2.*
from mainTableName as t1, databaseName.dbo.tableName as t2
where t1.field1=t2.field2

This will talk to another database, which doesn't need a DSN

If you're using Access (spit), then you can refer to the database by
location rather than name - it's ugly, but it works, and I can't
remember
the exact syntax as I haven't used for ages

I will have to try that again, I have had 4.3pro and 97 together, but never
managed to get 2000 to coexist with 97 without introducing some major
instabilities.

 As far as I know there is NO way to get both versions running on the same

 The error you are getting is a cracker, and you will have fun getting rid
of
 it!  The problem is caused by the fact that Office 2000 does not

 remove it's self when you uninstall it and your machine is now convinced

 are trying to run the wrong version of the software with the wrong

 The only way to solve it is to uninstall both versions of office, then run

 The best way to avoid this problem is not to have ANY version of office on
 the server, just install the latest copy of the MDAC (2.5 I think) which

 if they are not replicable) and do all your modifications on other
machines.

CFMAILPARAM and mapped drive problem

I am having problems attaching a file to a message with CFMAILPARAM?  I have
the mapped drive (H) set up and the necessary login and permissions set.  I
can run an html document from the mapped drive. However, when I use the
following in CFMAIL then I get an error stating it "cannot find
h:\backup\backuplog.doc"

CFMAIL FROM="Eagle"
To=mstrader,smedlin,pelder
BCC=jwatkins
Subject="Backup Report"
Greetings from Eagle!

Backup Report attached to this message

The above works fine on a local drive.  Can someone help me with this?

Calling CF template from perl?

Hi, through a combination of circumstances beyond our control we have
inherited a Perl script which we need to get running on an NT system. The
part thats giving us problems is mailing from the script as we can't use an
SMTP server or install any additional software on the NT box (don't ask why,
if we could do it Blat would be on that machine as we speak).

We do have access to CF 4.0 on the server though, so we were wondering - can
we send the email data from the perl script to a CF template which would do
the mailing? The script is set up with a mailing subroutine which is passed
four variables - To, From, Subject and Message, all messages will be
pre-defined and fairly short in length.

Anyone have any ideas on this? We have a very basic level of Perl experience
so if any answers can not assume we know what we are doing it may save time
;)

Can't you use the Net::SMTP module ???

or to call the cf using "libwww-perl (LWP) modules"  , something like ...

use LWP::Simple;
$content = get($URL);
you'll need to encode the URL you send
more @ http://www.perl.com/pub/doc/manual/html/pod/perlfaq9.html
or www.cpan.org to get the modules.

Anything passed to a custom tagged gets handed to the attributes scope.

CF_YourTag
parameter1="test"
parameter2="test2"


You must access parameter1 and parameter2 as attributes.parameter1 
and attributes.parameter2 inside the custom tag.

If that tag does some processing that you must access after and 
outside of the tag, it must be called with the caller scope.

If inside the tag, you have:

cfset result = "Yes!"

Then inside the tag, you can use:

cfoutput#result#/cfoutput (or variables.result)

But outside the tag you will get an error.

If you want to access "result" outside the tag, then inside the tag 
you'll need to do:

cfset caller.result = "Yes!"

In which case cfoutput#result#/cfoutput (or variables.result) 
will work outside and after the tag.

If you need to access "result" inside and outside of the tag, you'll 
need to set it twice.

cfset result = "Yes!"
cfset caller.result = result

I think all that is correct. :)

how much is too much optimization?

i realize that compiling this statement involves several steps. however,
after it's compiled into "p-code", does it really matter? does programming
like this only affect the initial compilation, which is cached, or does it
affect every hit?

i think this is a very important question because if it only affects the
first hit, it puts an optimation effort into a completely different
perspective.

Never found a way myself.  Check out CFX_Mail by fuseware.  Best $40 I ever
spent regarding this.  Allows custom headers which will allow you to do
pretty much whatever you can fathom.

Another date/time question

of Now().  That works great for new records that are added.
I can display that date field (e.g. "Last Updated
#CreateODBCDateTime(datetime)#").  My question, though, is
about updates - my users can update some of the fields in
that table with updated/more recent info, and I'd like to
change that date/time field to reflect these changes.

Do I do a CFSET on the datetime field?  Any ideas / help
would be greatly appreciated!

I assume this is an Access DB?  When you update the record you need to make
sure you updqate the datetime field too.  i.e.

 The error you are getting is a cracker, and you will have fun getting rid
of
 it!  The problem is caused by the fact that Office 2000 does not

 remove it's self when you uninstall it and your machine is now convinced

 are trying to run the wrong version of the software with the wrong
licence.

 The only way to solve it is to uninstall both versions of office, then run

So did you run the second query off of your database that somehow used the
key field from your search results in the WHERE statement?  And I hate to
show too much ignorance, but what would the sql WHERE clause look like?  I
saw someone else suggest WHERE key IN (#valuelist(key)#), but I couldn't get
that to work.  I'm not familiar with IN, so I wasn't sure if I was using it
properly, so mine looked like WHERE file_name IN (#valuelist(key)#).

Taking this one step further . . . and in an attempt to have my users only
select their criteria once . . . for Verity purposes, couldn't I throw all
of my fields (author, description, file name, date, etc.) into one of the
Custom fields (I've heard you can do that).

The user would make their selections on the search form, but each of their
selections would only be searched against that Custom field. For instance,
if the user selects "Smith" as an author and the word "Smith" appears in the
body of the document or in the description field, it would incorrectly be
chosen as part of the results during the Verity search. Then I could take
the results, use the key field, and go get the records that I want, further
defining the results by my query.But when I throw the results in to a
query, WHERE author EQ "Smith" would weed out those erroneous results.

With approximately 1,000 documents, would this chug?

I just did something like that.  First I indexed a collection of word
documents and searched the collection based on the keyword that the user
gave.  Then I looped through the search results with a query to select only
those records that matched the first keyword plus the other criteria that I
put in dropdowns.

That should work just fine for string data because (to the best of my
knowledge) CF passes simple data types by value.  This means that (using
your code as an example) SessionUserID is a brand new variable with the same
value as Session.UserID.

Just be careful if you have complex data types like structures, queries, etc
stored in the session or application scope.  CF passes complex data types by
reference, which works like so:

CFLOCK SCOPE="Session" TIMEOUT="5" TYPE="ReadOnly"
 CFSET SessionMyQuery = Session.MyQuery
/CFLOCK

SessionMyQuery is basically created as a pointer to Session.MyQuery, which
means that you still need to lock reads and writes to it.  So if you were to
reference SessionMyQuery later in your page without locking it you would run
the risk of corrupting your session data.

To get around this you can use the CF 4.5 function Duplicate() (maybe
DeepCopy(), I can't remember... I don't use 4.5). Also note that the
StructCopy() will only copy the TOP level of a structure: if you have nested
structures, they will be passed by reference.  If you want an exact
duplicate of a complex, nested structure then use Duplicate().

So the moral of the story is:
1) You can create "local" copies of simple data types within a lock, and
then access the local copies outside of a lock later in the page
2) If you want to create local copies of complex data types then use
Duplicate().  However, first decide which will impose the greater
performance hit: Duplicating a large complex object or sprinkling a few
locks through your code.

Problems indexing pdf files

Hi, folks.

One of our programmers is having problems indexing pdf's into a Verity collection. I 
was able to do it a couple of weeks ago for a different project w/o a problem, and 
don't really see
anything wrong in his code.

He's been able to index other file types just fine as part of the same application. 
Have any of you ever run across problems with indexing pdf's?

We've tried blowing away the collections and starting over, to no avail.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It's not necessary.  It's supposed to be speed queries up, IF your
query qualifies.  My recollection is the amount of data returned
with BLOCKFACTOR = n must be below a certain amount (32K?)  If the
data exceeds this amount, I'm told CF backs up and tries n-1, n-2,
etc, which can slow things down.

I haven't been concerned about the 32K (or whatever the actual
number is) because I typically use BLOCKFACTOR = 100 to get a list
of primary keys based on the SELECT criteria.  I then use the list
of primary keys to pull entire rows of data (for each value of the
primary key) out of my database stored in memory in a Structure.

Reading between the lines here...  Are you saying that BLOCKFACTOR
doesn't affect the number of of rows returned in a query, it just
affects the interaction between the ODBC driver and CF?

  I'm not sure
that I have any idea then if designating the BLOCKFACTOR is either
necessary or benificial to any givent SP call.

trying to view studio examples

I'm trying to view the examples provided in CF Studio help references.
browser.

When I click on the "view example" button the browser launches but get a
message that "can't connect to the server" and then gives the URL.

But then when I put the URL of the example directly in the browser I connect
just fine.

I have CF Studio 4.0

than call Perl from CF - I did download your CF_Perl tag and it looks like a
very handy tag which may well come in useful in the future, but unless I am

Mail Servers?

Are there any GOOD yet not too expensive mail servers out there? We
currently
have exchange no matter what we do we cant get CF to work with exchange as
long
as Relaying is shut down.  So we wanted to install another mail server for
CF
that can bypass exchange. Meaning we dont want a mail server, like some,
that still
POINTS to another mail server. We want a mail server that can send out SMTP
mail on it's own, i dont care about receiving mail. Any recommendations?

cfapplication::execute error

I have an application running on and win 2000 box with cold fusion 4.5.1 SP1
and I keep getting the following error, can anyone help?

Info from the application.log file:

- The error occurred while processing an element with a general identifier

HTTP::Request::Common::GET
or

How about just starting the service for the mail server included w/IIS? If
its just for CF it will work fine and you can block relaying w/your own
exceptions. Plus its free and you already have it if you're running NT
Server.

trouble with suppress white space by default

Has anybody else experienced problems with the CF admin setting "supress
white space by default"?  We're running CF 4.5.1 on NT 4 with Service Pack
6a, and even after a re-start of the server with that option turned on, our
pages are still output to the browser with a ton of white space.  We have
experimented with using cfsetting enablecfoutputonly... in places, and it
has worked, but because of the way our code is set up, there are many places
where we can't use it. 

We have two side by side servers running the same configuration and code
(development and testing machines), and we get the same result from both
machines.

any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

You have to have a GROUP BY if you are using COUNT(). It's an aggregate
function -
that means it's meaningless without a GROUP BY. What are you trying to do?

I believe that this can be done.  There is a registry setting that will 
allow this.  The reason that I know this is that it was an issue when 4.5 
was in beta and it had to be set in order to allow 4.0 and 4.5 to coexist.

So, to figure it out, you need to find someone who still has the 4.5 beta 
release notes.

By their very nature aggregate functions require a group by. If you have no
group by,  then the
entire recordset is the group and location_city would make no sense unless
your entire recordset has the same value

Neil,

Too bad the beta testers didn't win out with this one. The inability to
view multiple files is my only serious complaint with Studio. When the need
to see two files simultaneously arises, I just fire up my old copy of
Arachnophilia ( free download from http://www.arachnoid.com ), and I can
view as many files at once as I want to, although more than four files
starts to make each one more difficult to view, as the available window
space for the application is divided among the open files.

I'm sure other editors we've discussed in recent months will open multiple
files, too, but this may be a quick solution to your problem.

Yes that is a pain, however there are other ways to do this. When the
feature split document was introduced we beta testers asked for the ability
to split the pain and allow for 2 documents to be loaded. I am not sure if
this request was ever made available to us, but it would be a nice thing to
have added.

Determine a file size

cffile will tell you the size of a file on upload.
For an existing file on the server I'd suggest looking for a custom tag at
the Allaire Developer's Exchange.

CFStudio resource windows

If your using NT, you can get SendMail. It is NOT Expesive but
is definately not free. It has a web interface already to manage.
I have been running it for sometime and have no problems sending
mass emails out by the truckloads.

more lately and Ive been noticing it popping up in my server.log showing
that it is running usually for about 10 seconds.  When I use the template it
seems to run very fast never for 10 seconds.  The template if very basic
just a few CFIF and CFLOCATION.  Is it possible that this is being logged
incorrectly because of the re-direction..?

You use CFDirectory.
This gets you the name, date/time and size of the file, as long as they're
local to the machine (or on a network)

have exchange no matter what we do we cant get CF to work with exchange as

as Relaying is shut down.  So we wanted to install another mail server for
CF
that can bypass exchange. Meaning we dont want a mail server, like some,
that still
POINTS to another mail server. We want a mail server that can send out SMTP
mail on it's own, i dont care about receiving mail. Any recommendations?

see my siggy for free IMGate.  anti-relay and anti-spam for 
protecting exchange while allowing CF to relay its outbound at LAN 
speed without DNS lookups.

If you're nervous about FreeBSD or Linux, I can install over telnet 
for a much smaller fee than you're going to pay for new commercial 
mail software.

You can't check the file size until after it has been uploaded, but you can 
check the filesize variable immediately after upload and delete the file if 
it is too big.

Stored Procedure Problem

Created a stored procedure about a week ago that has been running fine up to
now.  Suddenly (for no apparent reason) it has stopped working and I have
this error.

ODBC Error Code = S1000 (General error)

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]SqlDumpExceptionHandler:
Process 13 generated fatal exception c005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.
SQL Server is terminating this process.

What is an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION? Also how do I combat it.

The SP is not very complex taking in a few values (in the right order etc)
and compiling an SQL Statement and putting the results of an
Exec(@sqlstring) on the SQL into a temp table.  The table is then returned
to Cold Fusion.

Any ideas what may not be working? It certainly used to work.

How were the pdf files created?  Are they scans | images? If it was
"scanned" text - think the pdf would need to be "Captured" first.  If text
doc - "printed to pdf" then there is a prob w/ verity or cf code.

OT: PDFWriter

Ok, this is off-topic, but I AM using a CF front-end for this app, and
maybe, just maybe someone on here knows the answer off the top of their
head.

I have a web based configurator storing a configuration in WDDX in a
database.  On another machine on the network I have a VB program keeping an
eye on the database and when a new configuration is done it kicks off Visio,
creates a drawing for the configuration, and then prints that drawing to PDF
using PDFWriter.  Works great.  Until I lock my workstation . . . then the
registry tweaks I am using in VB to get the PDFWriter to print to the proper
place don't seem to work.  Anyone deal with an issue like this before?

 Every once in a while, when I open up studio, my docked resource windows
 become undocked and in the background. Is this a known issue and
 is there an patch for it?

Does this happen after one of the crashes? It happens to me when it dies and
I have to re-open the software

Yes, we use SE Post .  It runs along side our existing mail server.

Typical use for use was to run a list probe on the list membership
of one our lists.

This went out to 10,000 subscribers is short time.  Performance
wise it is great.


We have to send out quite a few reports by email these reports are
the combination of many queries and we build lists into variables
to insert into the message body.  It handles tab characters, word
wrap very well.

We will be using iMS on our next server without a doubt.

Howie has a Trial version for 60? days nothing to lose in trying it out.

One of our developers downloaded ExamDiff Pro from the ZDNET web site.  It
does file comparisons as well as directory comparisons.  Shareware.  I
would rather it be in Studio myself.

That depends  If you're running 4.5, then definately get 4.5a at
least.  Ideally, tho, you should run 4.5.1 as that's the latest
release version.

If you have an Allaire beta account (they're easy to setup), you
might consider downloading the latest beta of 4.5.1 SP1.  It's MUCH
more stable than the currently released 4.5.1.

Other than the fact that Adobe would have a "kinniption fit" if they knew
you were running web server based process or server based process to print
ot pdf :-)

take a look at the stuff from www.activepdf.com

Their server based "print to pdf" may provide a solution for you.  You didnt
mention you needed a FREE solution, but activepdf stuff isnt free, but
really reasonable.

Other NON Adobe blessed approaches are:

Have VISIO print to a postcript file (install a PostScript printer driver on
the server) on the machine and have Adobe "Distiller" watch that folder, and
it will create a pdf for you, then CFFile could move it around where ever
you like.

Likely your not getting support on the Adobe related forums is that Adobe
would hammer the list owners (who are usually in very tight with Adobe) for
recommending a license violating solution/work-around. Other than the active
pdf tools and others - what your doing likely violates Adobe's license of
PDF Writer and Acrobat.

Glad to talk off list with you on this if you wish too.
