Backups for co-located Cold Fusion servers
For those of you running Cold Fusion servers and database servers in a co-location facility, I'd like a survey of how you are backing up your systems. Do most people just have a tape drive in the system and run over to the co-lo facility once a week to pop out a tape and pop in the next one? RE: Stored Credit Card Numbers. Best practice.
Mark, Here's a couple of tips which may be worth considering. I don't consider myself a security expert so perhaps others on the list may agree/disagree with some of these suggestions. 1) If possible, seperate the Database from the Web-server. Then use IPX/SPX on the Web server to connect to the SQL Server machine. You can then add a blocking filter on your router to block all incoming and outgoing IPX traffic and make sure IPX is not set up on any proxies/firewalls. If set up correctly this should pretty much eliminate any traffic directly to the database except from your Web-server. If possible use non-routable IP numbers on your LAN (some thing like 192.168.x.x) and use NAT (Network Address Translation) on your router. This makes IP spoofing much more difficult for a hacker. IP bans are only useful if a hacker is unable to spoof their IP address. Also if the external IP number a hacker see's is different to the IP address range in use on your LAN, it makes it considerably harder to a hacker to scan ports on your network.Have a look at Steve Gibsons "Shields Up" web-site http://www.grc.com 2) Remove all rights from the tables you wish to use for storing the numbers and use stored procedures. This means that users can't link to the tables from an ODBC product like Access and read/modify tables. 3) If you are going to separate your CC numbers by splitting the first 12 digits from the checksum, you could create a "View" of your UserID and 4 digit fields and give a stored procedure select rights only to this View. 4) Use a stored procedure with Insert rights only when first creating the record. The script for collecting the CC number should use SSL. 5) Once a user has entered their number, never show them the first 12 digits again, sounds obvious but you would be amazed by the silly things people do. 6) Finally some "in-house" processes will need to read CC numbers for processing. Place any scripts which have Select rights on the first 12 digits in a separate virtual folder. Make these scripts read-only and place an IP ban on them (only allow 1 or two machines on the LAN to have access to them). If you are using your own scripts for CC processing and not a bought in solution, add NT security to these scripts. I hope I haven't gone over the top here. I also have a doc that I got from the MS web-site called "Authentication and Security for Internet Developers". Mail me if you would like a copy. Bit of a joke MS lecturing on security when there products have been riddled with security holes. The first table, had the last 4 digits, and would be displayed to the customer like: 3456 And prompt them to enter the first 11 or 12 (AMEX or Non-AMEX). Then the Java servlet for ClearCommerce would retrieve the 11 or 12 digits from the 2nd table, decrypt it, and match it to what the customer had. You can implement any variance of this you like, as this type of situation also helps with unnecessary viewing by employees who do not need access to that info. -- Dan O'Keefe TriPoint Technologies [EMAIL PROTECTED] 954.501.3113 |-Original Message- |From: Mark W. OK, firstly it helps immeasurably to know which database driver you're using Secondly, if they are different drivers then it's more difficult than if they are the same - SQL Server will talk to others, but not as nicely as it does it's own IF you're using SQL Server, then it's easy select t1.*, t2.* from mainTableName as t1, databaseName.dbo.tableName as t2 where t1.field1=t2.field2 This will talk to another database, which doesn't need a DSN If you're using Access (spit), then you can refer to the database by location rather than name - it's ugly, but it works, and I can't remember the exact syntax as I haven't used for ages Philip Arnold ASP Multimedia Limited T: +44 (0)20 8680 1133 "Websites for the real world" ** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. The error you are getting is a cracker, and you will have fun getting rid of it! The problem is caused by the fact that Office 2000 does not completely remove it's self when you uninstall it and your machine is now convinced you are trying to run the wrong version of the software with the wrong licence. The only way to solve it is to uninstall both versions of office, then run a utility provided by Microsoft (see the URL's at the end of the email) to finish the uninstall for you, then reinstall the version of office you want to run. The best way to avoid this problem is not to have ANY version of office on the server, just install the latest copy of the MDAC (2.5 I think) which will provide read/write access to all versions of Access databases (but ONLY if they are not replicable) and do all your modifications on other machines. Calling CF template from perl?
Hi, through a combination of circumstances beyond our control we have inherited a Perl script which we need to get running on an NT system. The part thats giving us problems is mailing from the script as we can't use an SMTP server or install any additional software on the NT box (don't ask why, if we could do it Blat would be on that machine as we speak). We do have access to CF 4.0 on the server though, so we were wondering - can we send the email data from the perl script to a CF template which would do the mailing? The script is set up with a mailing subroutine which is passed four variables - To, From, Subject and Message, all messages will be pre-defined and fairly short in length. Anyone have any ideas on this? We have a very basic level of Perl experience so if any answers can not assume we know what we are doing it may save time ;) Wayne Putterill -- Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=listsbody=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.

Can't you use the Net::SMTP module ??? or to call the cf using "libwww-perl (LWP) modules" , something like ... use LWP::Simple; $content = get($URL); you'll need to encode the URL you send more @ http://www.perl.com/pub/doc/manual/html/pod/perlfaq9.html or www.cpan.org to get the modules. ~Justin MacCarthy - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 12:48 PM Subject: Calling CF template from perl? RE: Help with custom tag
On 8/22/00, Carol Chandler penned: It is my understanding that caller.message and attributes.message point to the same thing, but that any modifications that refer to it as "attributes.message" will be strictly local to that invocation of the tag. Is anyone willing to help with my understanding of caller vs. attribute, without necessarily getting too involved in the headache-y recursion? *grin* The most succinct way I can put it is: Anything passed to a custom tagged gets handed to the attributes scope. CF_YourTag parameter1="test" parameter2="test2" You must access parameter1 and parameter2 as attributes.parameter1 and attributes.parameter2 inside the custom tag. If that tag does some processing that you must access after and outside of the tag, it must be called with the caller scope. If inside the tag, you have: cfset result = "Yes!" Then inside the tag, you can use: cfoutput#result#/cfoutput (or variables.result) But outside the tag you will get an error. If you want to access "result" outside the tag, then inside the tag you'll need to do: cfset caller.result = "Yes!" In which case cfoutput#result#/cfoutput (or variables.result) will work outside and after the tag. If you need to access "result" inside and outside of the tag, you'll need to set it twice. cfset result = "Yes!" cfset caller.result = result I think all that is correct. :) -- Bud Schneehagen - Tropical Web Creations _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ ColdFusion Solutions / eCommerce Development [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.twcreations.com/ 954.721.3452 -- Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=listsbody=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.

how much is too much optimization?
consider the following code: cfset errorMessage = "This error message is too long to see on one line without scrolling" "across the screen. Therefore, I have broken it up into three different strings that I" "combine to create one error message" i realize that compiling this statement involves several steps. however, after it's compiled into "p-code", does it really matter? does programming like this only affect the initial compilation, which is cached, or does it affect every hit? i think this is a very important question because if it only affects the first hit, it puts an optimation effort into a completely different perspective. -mike -- Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=listsbody=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.

RE: CF-Talk V1 #157
Miriam - So did you run the second query off of your database that somehow used the key field from your search results in the WHERE statement? And I hate to show too much ignorance, but what would the sql WHERE clause look like? I saw someone else suggest WHERE key IN (#valuelist(key)#), but I couldn't get that to work. I'm not familiar with IN, so I wasn't sure if I was using it properly, so mine looked like WHERE file_name IN (#valuelist(key)#). Taking this one step further . . . and in an attempt to have my users only select their criteria once . . . for Verity purposes, couldn't I throw all of my fields (author, description, file name, date, etc.) into one of the Custom fields (I've heard you can do that). The user would make their selections on the search form, but each of their selections would only be searched against that Custom field. For instance, if the user selects "Smith" as an author and the word "Smith" appears in the body of the document or in the description field, it would incorrectly be chosen as part of the results during the Verity search. Then I could take the results, use the key field, and go get the records that I want, further defining the results by my query. But when I throw the results in to a query, WHERE author EQ "Smith" would weed out those erroneous results. With approximately 1,000 documents, would this chug? Thank you for your advice . . . Re: CFLOCK: Aliasing Session application variables at the top of the page
I have the following code which seems to work for reading application session variables snip Is this method (aliasing variables at the start of the file) okay to use, or will I need to re-code everything to avoid problems. It seems to work so far... snip That should work just fine for string data because (to the best of my knowledge) CF passes simple data types by value. This means that (using your code as an example) SessionUserID is a brand new variable with the same value as Session.UserID. Just be careful if you have complex data types like structures, queries, etc stored in the session or application scope. CF passes complex data types by reference, which works like so: CFLOCK SCOPE="Session" TIMEOUT="5" TYPE="ReadOnly" CFSET SessionMyQuery = Session.MyQuery /CFLOCK SessionMyQuery is basically created as a pointer to Session.MyQuery, which means that you still need to lock reads and writes to it. So if you were to reference SessionMyQuery later in your page without locking it you would run the risk of corrupting your session data. To get around this you can use the CF 4.5 function Duplicate() (maybe DeepCopy(), I can't remember... I don't use 4.5). Also note that the StructCopy() will only copy the TOP level of a structure: if you have nested structures, they will be passed by reference. If you want an exact duplicate of a complex, nested structure then use Duplicate(). So the moral of the story is: 1) You can create "local" copies of simple data types within a lock, and then access the local copies outside of a lock later in the page 2) If you want to create local copies of complex data types then use Duplicate(). However, first decide which will impose the greater performance hit: Duplicating a large complex object or sprinkling a few locks through your code. Re: Stored Procedure BLOCKFACTOR
It's not necessary. It's supposed to be speed queries up, IF your query qualifies. My recollection is the amount of data returned with BLOCKFACTOR = n must be below a certain amount (32K?) If the data exceeds this amount, I'm told CF backs up and tries n-1, n-2, etc, which can slow things down. I haven't been concerned about the 32K (or whatever the actual number is) because I typically use BLOCKFACTOR = 100 to get a list of primary keys based on the SELECT criteria. I then use the list of primary keys to pull entire rows of data (for each value of the primary key) out of my database stored in memory in a Structure. best, paul At 11:56 PM 8/22/00 -0600, you wrote: Reading between the lines here... Are you saying that BLOCKFACTOR doesn't affect the number of of rows returned in a query, it just affects the interaction between the ODBC driver and CF? Yes. I'm not sure that I have any idea then if designating the BLOCKFACTOR is either necessary or benificial to any givent SP call. -- Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=listsbody=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.

trouble with suppress white space by default
Has anybody else experienced problems with the CF admin setting "supress white space by default"? We're running CF 4.5.1 on NT 4 with Service Pack 6a, and even after a re-start of the server with that option turned on, our pages are still output to the browser with a ton of white space. We have experimented with using cfsetting enablecfoutputonly... in places, and it has worked, but because of the way our code is set up, there are many places where we can't use it. We have two side by side servers running the same configuration and code (development and testing machines), and we get the same result from both machines. any help/suggestions would be appreciated. -- Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=listsbody=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.

Re: Second Request for help!
I believe that this can be done. There is a registry setting that will allow this. The reason that I know this is that it was an issue when 4.5 was in beta and it had to be set in order to allow 4.0 and 4.5 to coexist. So, to figure it out, you need to find someone who still has the 4.5 beta release notes. By their very nature aggregate functions require a group by. RE: Second Request for help!
Neil, Too bad the beta testers didn't win out with this one. The inability to view multiple files is my only serious complaint with Studio. When the need to see two files simultaneously arises, I just fire up my old copy of Arachnophilia ( free download from http://www.arachnoid.com ), and I can view as many files at once as I want to, although more than four files starts to make each one more difficult to view, as the available window space for the application is divided among the open files. I'm sure other editors we've discussed in recent months will open multiple files, too, but this may be a quick solution to your problem. --John "Scott, Andrew" To: "'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'" scotta6@anz.[EMAIL PROTECTED] com cc: Subject: RE: Second Request for help! 08/22/2000 11:55 PM Please respond to cf-talk Yes that is a pain, however there are other ways to do this. Stored Procedure Problem
Created a stored procedure about a week ago that has been running fine up to now. Suddenly (for no apparent reason) it has stopped working and I have this error. ODBC Error Code = S1000 (General error) [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 13 generated fatal exception c005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL Server is terminating this process. What is an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION? Also how do I combat it. The SP is not very complex taking in a few values (in the right order etc) and compiling an SQL Statement and putting the results of an Exec(@sqlstring) on the SQL into a temp table. The table is then returned to Cold Fusion. Any ideas what may not be working? It certainly used to work. The SP is not very complex taking in a few values (in the right order etc) and compiling an SQL Statement and putting the results of an Exec(@sqlstring) on the SQL into a temp table. The table is then returned to Cold Fusion. Any ideas what may not be working? It certainly used to work. How were the pdf files created? Are they scans | images? If it was "scanned" text - think the pdf would need to be "Captured" first. OT: PDFWriter
Ok, this is off-topic, but I AM using a CF front-end for this app, and maybe, just maybe someone on here knows the answer off the top of their head. I have a web based configurator storing a configuration in WDDX in a database. On another machine on the network I have a VB program keeping an eye on the database and when a new configuration is done it kicks off Visio, creates a drawing for the configuration, and then prints that drawing to PDF using PDFWriter. Works great. Until I lock my workstation . . . then the registry tweaks I am using in VB to get the PDFWriter to print to the proper place don't seem to work. Anyone deal with an issue like this before? Thanks, and sorry for the OT post . . . just not getting much help on the Adobe forums, or from Adobe support, or from some of the other sites dealing with PDFs . . . Performance wise it is great. We have to send out quite a few reports by email these reports are the combination of many queries and we build lists into variables to insert into the message body. It handles tab characters, word wrap very well. We will be using iMS on our next server without a doubt. Howie has a Trial version for 60? days nothing to lose in trying it out. That depends If you're running 4.5, then definately get 4.5a at least. Ideally, tho, you should run 4.5.1 as that's the latest release version. If you have an Allaire beta account (they're easy to setup), you might consider downloading the latest beta of 4.5.1 SP1. It's MUCH more stable than the currently released 4.5.1. Re: PDFWriter
Other than the fact that Adobe would have a "kinniption fit" if they knew you were running web server based process or server based process to print ot pdf :-) take a look at the stuff from www.activepdf.com Their server based "print to pdf" may provide a solution for you. You didnt mention you needed a FREE solution, but activepdf stuff isnt free, but really reasonable. Other NON Adobe blessed approaches are: Have VISIO print to a postcript file (install a PostScript printer driver on the server) on the machine and have Adobe "Distiller" watch that folder, and it will create a pdf for you, then CFFile could move it around where ever you like. Likely your not getting support on the Adobe related forums is that Adobe would hammer the list owners (who are usually in very tight with Adobe) for recommending a license violating solution/work-around. Other than the active pdf tools and others - what your doing likely violates Adobe's license of PDF Writer and Acrobat. Glad to talk off list with you on this if you wish too.
