So for example... A form is filled out by the user..he presses submit and the info goes into the database. Later someone wants to print a report...they retrieve the info from the database and a report is formed such as "your request dated #date# was approved by #approvedby#...blah blah"...now i want that report to be printed out. OT: W2K Pro, IE5.5, .doc files and duplicate file extensions
Windows 2000 Professional, IE 5.5, Word 2000, CFAS 4.01. I'm seeing some slightly weird behaviour when trying to make a Word document available for download from a web site. I've tried naming the Word document in several different formats to see what the difference is. http://www.netshopperuk.co.uk/applicationsservices/NetPayments/help.cfm Scroll down to the four links to the Word document. If you right-click and select "Save As" on any of the files, the file name is displayed in the "Save As" dialogue as ".doc.doc", where the extension is duplicated. The Network Admin's looked on TechNet and found an article that said (something to the effect of) this happens with file types that aren't registered on the server. Does the Network Admin have to install Word on the server in order to overcome this? Bonus question... === If you click on the first file, it's displayed in the browser ok. If you click on the second file, it displays a "Windows Installer" dialogue box that changes to a "Windows Office 2000 Premium" dialogue box saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM... etc etc" If you click on the third and fourth files, they are displayed ok. Do you know what's differerent about file 2? Thanks in advance. -- Aidan Whitehall [EMAIL PROTECTED] Netshopperuk Telephone +44 (01744) 648650 ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Re: Procedure and Function (Rambling thought)
I kinda think the new CF functions as poor man's objects without the protection and inheritance stuff. I don't agree with the fact that objects are too complex are not suited for scripting languages. If used right, they actually save tons of work/time long term and can actually make our programs run faster especially if the app is pretty large in scale. After all, objects are created to ease our programming headaches if used in the right places. CF/Allaire want to capture the enterprise market which is why they have all the loadbalancing intergration so that they can make huge profit margins on the Enterprise editions and the bloated/hugely complex enterprise level projects demand objects to make life a lot easier. I wouldn't be surprised if the spotlight feature for CF 6.0 (hopefully the JSP/pharoh? version) would be objects. It's just a matter of when not if in my mind. xing - Original Message - Subject: RE: Procedure and Function (Rambling thought) I agree! I dont know what the big fuss is about... CF Tags are functions as far as anyone should be concerned - just because they're not implemented in exactly the same way VB, Java, etc implements functions means didley squat... I'll be the first to admit that I'am sometimes frustrated by how CF Tags are carried out but more often then not i thank god that they work as they do, it makes life so much easier when your output is HTML. As for objects - Anyone thinking of using a scripting language to create a program that requires objects should be taken out and given a good talking to. CF is great as the glue that holds together all the objects that we need to create effective websites (DB connections, Email, Files, Forms, etc) but by no means would i use CF to create something as complicated as a credit card transaction gateway - Java is much more nicely designed to do this. In short, i think CF has been brilliantly written to create websites quickly, effectively and under budget - an equivilent website could take as long as 3 times longer if written in C++ or Java... From what I remember from my CS classes (my degree is in Electronics, not CS) functions and procedures are devices that use either an individual or multiple attributes to perform some computation. In the case of a function, at least one value is returned to the calling process. Forgive me if I'm reaching a bit here, but doesn't that remind anyone else of a custom tag or CFX tag? A procedure doesn't return a value, but simply performs an action or actions on attributes passed to it. Taking a bigger stretch, doesn't that sound a bit like an include? Now I know, this is getting abstract, but it seems to my thought process that Allair actually did provide us with a mechanism for performing external functions that can be used repetively across a wide array of applications and scopes. So to throw a kink into the wheel, yes, Cold Fusion does have functions. We simply call them something different: Custom Tags. As for implementing Object Oriented programming concepts, that may be a bit outside the bounds of what can be done. In all honesty, that's okay. I personally hated OOP... especially when I had a PhD that was more interested in researching multiprocessor programming concepts than teaching, but I digress. RE: Link to download .jpg or gif
I am looking for a solution to a downloading problem i am having with a link. I am thumbnailing images, and am wanting to have a "download" link next to the thumbnail that will automatically open up the 'save to' window. Obvioulsy if i just link directly to the .jpg file, the download window will not pop up, and it just redirects me to a blank page in my default browser and shows the full size image. Any suggestions?? Since browsers naturally display all file extensions that it knows should be displayed, when you link to a graphic it'll try to show it not save it What you need to do is pass the image with a different extension (one that the browser won't understand) and that should display the "Save As" dialog What I'd do is have a CF template that CFcontent the image and gives it a dummy name, so you can have a hyperlink like ImageDownload.cfm/myImage.gif/myImage.gif-file But then users will have to change the extension themselves - requires some user intelligence Philip Arnold Director Certified ColdFusion Developer ASP Multimedia Limited T: +44 (0)20 8680 1133 "Websites for the real world" ** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. RE: when is CF5 release? (a little OT)
Allaire claims that the latest CF builds are dramatically faster and especially on linux. I have not done any formal tests so I can't say it is true or not. But I can safely say that CF is now finally on a bit of diet. Memory usage has been down significantly across the board on 24/7 servers pumping out loads of pages... Our CF5 Beta definitely runs faster than CF4.5.2 on a similar intranet machine - actually out-performs CF4 on a faster processor machine I would personally invest in CF 5.0's features based on how stable the betas have been. Re: IsDefined('') v. cfset
cfparam will be more expensive than cfset, just because it tests forthe existence of a variable before setting it. However it's like comparing apples to oranges. They are used for different reasons. If you have a page that may or may not have a variable passed to it, but you have code on the page that expects the variable, you dont want to overwrite a legitimate value from your program with cfset. In this case, cfparam would be the best choice. There is also a difference between a variable initialized in the application.cfm and a true application variable. You wouldn't want to cfparam a true application variable, since it;s in memory, and you could run into a situation where multiple people are setting it at the same time. Initializing variables in the application.cfm is very easy, but if you are really worried about performace. Putting all of your constant varaibles in a structure then scoping the structure in the application scope, will be faster than reinitializing the variable on every page, at the cost of a little bit of memory. If you only have a handful of variables that you actually need throughout the application, the performace his to just cfset them on every page is minimal, and probably not worth the time it will take to code them better though. You also have to think about locking with the in memory scopes, like the application scope. Lets say you have 30 variables and a high traffic site though, it may then pay off to optimize, rather than let Moore take care of it ;-) Here is an example... In your application.cfm test for the existence of the structure, because application variables time out. cflock type="EXCLUSIVE" timeout="5" cfif NOT isDefined("application.globalVars") cfset globalVars = structNew() Then you set all yourvariables here... cfset globalVars.dsn = "myDSN" cfset globalVars.password = "password" ... Then application scope the structure. cfset application.globalVars = "" cfset application.globalVars = globalVars /cfif /cflock You can then reference the individual variables throughout your application with #application.globalVars.dsn#. This can be made even faster with the use of cfscript too. jon - Original Message - From: "Bill Davies" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "CF-Talk" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 11, 2001 5:17 PM Subject: RE: IsDefined('') v. cfset So would cfparam be cheaper than just doing a cfset anyway - say for an Application variable whose value is constant? -Original Message- From: Will Swain [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 11 April 2001 17:27 To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: IsDefined('') v. cfset Yup, CFPARAMs in your application.cfm file will 'set' empty variables, which you can fill later. After head banging by a lot of people, I came up with the following code. When printed from "most" browsers, it prints in what looks like page breaks because of the way browsers try to not break images. If you tie your text content to an image (that is around 80% of the page height) with a table, the browser will print what looks to the user as page breaks. You might need to adjust the height of the spacer, but I think this is the number that worked in Netscape and IE 3 up. table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" tr td width="10"img src="spacer.gif" width="1" height="450"/td tdPage One Content/td /tr /table table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" tr td width="10"img src="spacer.gif" width="1" height="450"/td tdPage Two Content/td /tr /table Paul Sizemore Finish Line 3308 N Mitthoeffer Rd Indianapolis, IN 46235 W: 317-899-1022 ext 3516 -Original Message- From: Terri Stocke [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, April 09, 2001 2:15 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: Re:Printing, page breaks, and heading info Okay, I moved it and tried it in the body, and then in a paragraph tag. Bluestein Senior Programmer NYS Office of Real Property 518-486-6335 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply Separator Subject:Printing, page breaks, and heading info Author: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 4/9/01 12:48 PM Hey all, I have a shipping and receiving application that allows employees to generate a shipping request via the web. The shipping dept. would like that form to be printed out by the user, but they want one of two things when this happens: 1) Either only allow the maximum number of items that will print on one page, and prompt the user to fill out a second form for additional items; OR 2) Automatically have the app insert a break between the item in the last row of the table and the next table row on the next page, but ALSO make sure that the shipping address and other info is ALSO printed on each subsequent page. I favor the second method, since it is less hassle for the user, and it would be easier to just insert a break in the table than to try to guess how many characters a user might enter onto the page (virtually impossible to determine how many pages they will need). After searching the archives, I found the snippet I thought would work: TABLE STYLE="page-break-before:always". I tried this in both the body tag and in my table tag, but each time I used it I got the dreaded blue screen o' death. I then found and tried a variation: TABLE STYLE="page-break-inside:avoid. This fixed the blue screen problem, but it locked up my PC (couldn't even CTRL/ALT/DEL). I am using Netscape, since most of our employees use it, but I need something that will work in both Netscape and IE. So...my question is twofold. 1) Does anyone know of a way to make the table print nicely across pages without crashing the PC, and 2) Does anyone know how I can force the address/shipping info from the first page onto all subsequent pages (more important than the first issue, since regardless of the page break, the table will always print to the next page, it just won't look as nice without the break.) disabling back or second insert
I have a registration form, that queries initially to make sure that the registrant is not already registered, so it eliminates people from registering more than one time if they come back to the site, however if they submit the form and do not think anything has happened, they can use their back button, hit the submit button and the query does another insert and I end up with multiple records in my DB. RE: How to get Julian Date
Some confusion apparent here - The word Julian appears in two instances that I know of when referring to dates. There is the Julian calendar and Julian dates. The Julian calendar refers to the original calendar invented by Julius Ceasar where a year was 365 1/4 days long. In 1582, Pope Gregory estimated that the Julian calendar had thrown the calendar off by 10 days and thus eliminated the dates Oct 5-14, 1852 to correct it. The new calendar is known as the Gregorian calendar. The headaches that we had by the fact that 2000 was not a leap year is part of the same system. Incidently, the Gregorian calendar isn't perfect either; A Gregorian year is approximately 12 seconds longer than an astronomical year (the time it takes for the earth to move around the sun). However, since it will take another 2000-3000 years before we're even 12 hours off, I don't think anyone is that worried. Julian dates refer to a data format where months are not counted, only the day of the year. Today for example is April 13th 2001, which is the 31+28+31+13=103rd day of the year. The Julian date then is 2001103. The only place that I've ever encountered that uses Julian dates is the military supply system, I think because they're concerned with how quickly something can be fufilled and not having to fuss as much over leap years. However, given that military supply is a multi billion dollar industry, that probably big enough to justify knowing about it. RE: Email Questions
If the code inside of your CFMAIL tags are going to be run 70,000 times, I'd put a lot of effort into optimizing it. 1. The BCC idea is great. 2. Make sure you're not running any unnecessary queries inside of your CFMAIL 3. Take all the text in the body and place it into a variable such as #MailText# and then just do CFMAIL ... ... #MailText# /CFMAIL This will keep CFAS from parsing what's in between the CFMAIL tags 70,000 times. -- Original Message Follows -- Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 08:55:37 -0400 From: "Brian Peddle" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Email Questions Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I posted this last night but I didn't see it post. I apologize if it comes through twice. I currently send out a weekly newsletter to a growing database of 70,000 right now. I currently query the DB and loop the results and send out an email to each member. It takes CF about 24 hours to process 70,000 emails from it SPOOL out to the mail server. The machines is a dual 700 / 1/2 gig ram. I don't think its the machine but more the process of 70,000! emails. My initial thought is to group together 40 emails at a time and BCC then and have the sent to be whatever. That would bring the emails total down to about 1700 which CF can pump out fairly fast. Id prefer to stay in CF for this. Does anyone have any suggestions or things that they may have done. Check the physical memory available and the disk space available. If you are uploading "Large" files, they have to be read into memory before being written to disk. FormatBaseN Blowing up
Hi folks, Okay, off the thought ramble for a moment and on to something more pressing and less theoretical. Yesterday our network admin updated one of the servers. existence of table
Is there a way to check for the existence of a database table (SQL 2000)? I have a calendar which stores each month's events in a separate table (events0301), and if the user hits the "last month" button past where the tables start, it throws an error. I tried a cftry/cfcatch on the query, butTo complicate matters, I'm using a UNION on "this" month and "last" month to show any events not cleared from the previous month. Re: printing
Hey guys! Thanks for all your suggestions and help. It seems like formatting an html doc would be the easiset. I will also look into the pdf cf custom tags, before i diecide on which to use. so what if i decide to html for the time being. If i were to do that all i would need to do was open a new window with the text etc...that i want to be printed. Now opening a new window is giving me this error on IE but works fine on NN this is the code i'm using: script language="javascript" var newWindow function makeNewWindow() { if (!newWindow || newWindow.closed) { newWindow= window.open("/khan/index.cfm?method=TrainingDetailedApprovalTID=#TID#", "Height=200, width=300") if (!newWindow.opener) { newWindow.opener = Window } } else { newWindow.focus() } } /script and then i use this to call it: a href="javascript:makeNewWindow()"Click here to see approval./a So what's wrong with that?! My other question is: I am passing cf variables through the url...how would i pass them to the new window then?! any suggestions? thanks a lot for you time! Heidi --- "Hasenfratz, Philipp" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The problem with doing a html file is depending on how the clients setup their browsers it will print differently, since it will be displaying differently or possibly displaying differently. Yes, that's a general problem with HTML. But you can do a lot with absolute positioning. You can set all margins and fonts absolutely. For example you can work together with CSS. Of course this will be a lot of work, but you can enforce the browser to do what YOU want. ColdFusion has some custom tags for creating .pdf files, I personally have never looked at them, but they are in their custom tag gallery at allaire.com If this were going to be printed just on a intranet and always to one computer, then you could write a Perl script to output to the printed in a set format and then pass your CF variables to that script via something like a html form as hidden form variables, but this method is only good for specific situations. OT: Test Environment for Forta's Book
Greetings, I'm writing to ask if anyone has an Exchange Server running LDAP (or test server w/Exchange) that I could use for testing. Here is the scenario: I'm working on the COM and CFLDAP chapters for Ben's new advanced book, and I have a lot of code that needs to be tested. Another user a while back provided me with LDAP access, but I could only query the server, not add or modify entries. Because of his situation, providing me with enough access to fully test was out of the question. If someone would be so generous to help out, I'd be very appreciative. I realise I'm asking a lot, but I was recently laid-off and no longer have access to an Exchange Server. Here are the items I would need: 1.) A new account setup for these tests 2.) Access to LDAP on Exchange (for testing code with add, modify, delete and query on CFLDAP) 3.) Priviledges to connect to Exchange through COM (MAPI.Session) If anyone can help out, please email me off-list. A function must return a single value. What language uses functions that don't? On the other hand, you're write about procedures. Forgive me if I'm reaching a bit here, but doesn't that remind anyone else of a custom tag or CFX tag? A procedure doesn't return a value, but simply performs an action or actions on attributes passed to it. Taking a bigger stretch, doesn't that sound a bit like an include? Well, custom tags are similar to procedures. Includes are not. If you call an include multiple times in a template it could produce weird side effects (or not), depending upon how you wrote the code in the include. There is no way to pass values into, or out of, an include. They are processed as if they were part of the original code. I haven't done any new development in it lately, but I regularly use programs I wrote some time ago. The pluses: it works well, as advertised. the minuses: It is pretty verbose. As I recall, Dave Weiner (Frontier, Userland, Manilla, EditThisPage, etc.) was put off with allaire for creating/choosing/promoting WDDX instead od Dave's technology. I think that Marc Cantor was the original founder of MM and is good friend of Dave likes his technology. Just visited the MM site... the investors page uses Java for animation... curious? Another option would be to make a query to retrieve all of the table names. You could store the resulting list in the app scope. RE: existence of table
That's an even better idea...by storing the list of tables in my application.cfm, I never have to query for them at all...just update the list once a month when the new table is created! That brings to mind another option.and a performance question. What would be the performance difference between loading that list (say up to 36 items) with every page through the application.cfm file, vs. reading a ..txt file from the server (the parsing should be the same for both)bearing in mind that my best guess on calendar usage would be about 25% of total pages loaded. When someone clicks on the document url to view the file, it hits the db table, retrieves the PDF's real URL and then CFLOCATIONs to that path. Is your join correct? Should it, perhaps, be WHERE products.ItemID = prodPics.itemID? RE: SQL Returns
Well, one way it to use the DISTINCT keyword. Change your statement from: SELECT Products.ItemID, etc. to SELECT DISTINCT Products.ItemID, etc. but I'm not sure if that will give you what you want. Give it a try and see what the result set looks like. cfoutput lists Alphabetically
Hi! How do I output a whole list of names from a query grouped alphabetically? Output example: A Allen, Bob Ames, John B Book, Sam Briant, Max I'm thinking it's by somehow using the group attribute of the cfoutput tag or looping through the query, but I'm not sure exactly how to get these results. RE: Stripping certain ASCII characters for XML file
What you really want to do (if you're going to XML) is replace those characters with numeric entities (XML will bomb on HTML entities unless you explicitly declare them in your DTD, or use an HTML compliant DTD) Hence your your amp; is #38;, your non-breaking space is #160; (i think) and not nbsp; etc. The easiest way to do this is replace(chr(x),"##" x ";", mystring, "ALL") You can do this in a loop where x=127 to 254 (but make sure to hit your "" at 38, etc.) getting your amps; and nbsp; to numeric entities is a little more involved -- you basically run through an array of replaces where arr[n] is the HTML entity for chr(n). Somewhere I have a custom tag called cf_makeEntitiesNumeric that does this, and I can dig it up if you need it. RE: Forms and whatnot
Try something like: cfoutput query="myQuery" group="Item" tr td#myQuery.ItemName#/td cfoutput td cfif Val(myQuery.Value)#myQuery.Value# cfelseinput name="Value" /cfif /td /cfoutput /tr /cfoutput Assuming that your query looks like: ItemName, Value And is sorted by ItemName, Quarter I just wrote that in email, so the syntax may not be perfect, but it should relay the general idea. They need to be able to compare the figures for each quarter in a table. Their quarter is set up as a stored procedure so they don't need to add which quarter they are currently editing (ie: it appends all the rows each quarter so their entry is actually an update query). I want the previous quarter to show in one column and the current quarter to be blank and ready to enter. Paul, You might want to look at the XMLFormat function. It may do what you need. cfinsert / Oracle Database
I'm trying to use cfinsert for the first time after using SQL queries. I can get it to work with a local Access Database, no problem. But when I try to use the Oracle database on the server, it asks for: table names must be qualified with the database name and table owner, as in 'customers.dbo.orders' I know this is basic...and I'm probably overlooking something REALLY simple. But I just can't figure it out!
