RE: CF and Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Matt Liotta

What you say doesn't invalidate the contractor's opinion. Sure you can
combine CF with other languages to do heavy lifting, but that means you
are using another language to solve a specific development problem. Thus
in regard to the specific development problem, CF may well seem like a
hokey language.

News flash, every language is hokey in its own way. Hence why we have so
many different languages. Just remember that CF IS hokey when it comes
to business logic. And, Java IS hokey when it comes to HTML
presentation. And, C++ IS hokey when it comes to building small and
efficient embedded applications. And, SQL IS hokey when it comes to
building object oriented applications. Etc.

Do yourself a service and learn every language under the Sun until your
toolkit of languages is so diverse that no problem will ever be hokey!

Re: Paypal Subscriptions...

2002-04-19 Thread Rafael (Alan Bleiweiss)

This is a seperate and more serious issue regarding PayPal and ALL third
party card services - It was announced this week and reported over the wire
services today that Mastercard is about to make a final decision on whether
to discontinue allowing ANY third party processors to process payments of
Mastercards!

The reason given is their claimed serious concern for reducing fraudulent
activity. Visa and Amex have both stated they will continue to support
such services.

So if Mastercard shuts the door on PayPal and the like, how many site
visitors would be left unable to purchase from your customers?

RE: CF and Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Rafael (Alan Bleiweiss)

Hi everyone - New to this list, so what better way to start chiming in on
threads than an old standby issue - Cold Fusion - everybody's punching bag...

I'm only intermediate at CF, however I've been managing web development
since January of 95. I've managed CF teams (had the pleasure of working
with Michael Dinowitz at ANT Internet back in 96 and 97), ASP and JAVA
developers, C++ guys, VB guys, and even managed a site where the
programmer insisted on using FOXBASE for a real estate site!

The concept of Business Rules really has NOTHING to do with the language
used from a managers perspective (I've managed 400 friggin sites being
built from the smallest mom and pop site to half million dollar systems and
business rules are business rules that, given the right manager and
development team, ANY of these languages would have been able to implement
- the truth is, as so many have said, in most situations nowadays, you can
build it in Cold Fusion faster, cheaper, leaner than in all the rest. Add
tie-ins to the mix, and CF CAN be used for the biggest of the big. While
the issue of speed, extensibility, security, and legacy tie-ins do come
into play, there's nothing HOKEY about using Cold Fusion mixed with other
compatable technologies where needed. Even in the biggest of the big
sites, if CF is the primary language, and if it's only used for 85% of the
code work and heavy lifting is shared with other technologies, that 85% CF
is so much more worth the savings in deployment and lines of code that it's
no joke.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Sun Microsystem's IPlanet team back in
the summer of 2000 - they were called in to evaluate a proprietary
technology that my company had developed for componentized site automation
that we were presenting to the head of Sun's eBusiness unit. I spent half
a day doing my best to help their lead Java programmer understand how it
was possible that my Cold Fusion team was able to build entire world-class
best-of-breed components at the rate of five components for every ONE
component his team was building in pure Java.

He was lost. Clueless. Couldn't grasp it. Like trying to tell a AMA
member Doctor that accupuncture really can help a person to heal carpal
tunnel WITHOUT surgery.

SO there you have it - I've seen it time in and time out - geeky guys who
think they know all the answers and that THEIR language is better than Cold
Fusion are just that - geeky guys with a closed mind and an arrogance that
cause a manager like me would kindly ask them to leave quietly if they
aren't able to back up their words with real world issues based
specifically on their complaint.

Re: too many forms

2002-04-19 Thread Douglas Brown

It has to do with how you are writing your query, if you have a table that has
multiple data in a column then it is duplicating within the form. You more than
likely need to do a join if you have relational tables.

OT: SecurityFocus: KPMG-2002013: Coldfusion Path Disclosure

2002-04-19 Thread Matt Robertson

The behavior posted earlier wasn't due to anything special in that 404
script. It was that CF wasn't getting its hands on the thing in the
first place as IIS was handling all 404 errors on its own.

Now, after going in and editing my IIS settings as described previously
I find CF is handling all 404 errors, showing its default error page
rather than the custom IIS-specified previously mentioned.

Does anyone know how to get that back? The procedure seems
straightforward, but I'm missing *something* here and am unable to set
things back.

That won't work - the IN operator requires a list of integers in the above
example. You can work around this by building a string and executing that
string using EXEC or sp_executesql, as others have already mentioned in this
thread.

Can someone tell me why when I click aa link to bring up a form to update, I do get
the correct form, but I get 25 copies of it - all containing the same information?

Here's the queries I'm using:
In the updateform file:

 Events.PrintDesc,
 Events.PrintPub,
 Events.InterPub,

 Internet.EndDate,
 PPrint.BeginDate,
 PPrint.EndDate,
 Intranet.BeginDate,
 Intranet.EndDate
FROM Events, Dates, Times, Internet, Intranet, PPrint
WHERE Events.ID = #URL.ID#

In the updateaction file:

UPDATE Events, Dates, times, Internet, Intranet, PPrint
SET
 Events.Title = '#form.title#',
 Events.InterDesc = '#form.InterDesc#',
 Events.IntraDesc = '#form.IntraDesc#',
 Events.PrintDesc = '#form.PrintDesc#',
 Events.InterPub = '#form.InterPub#',
 Events.IntraPub = '#form.IntraPub#',

 Events.Kid = '#form.Kid#',
 Events.Handicap = '#form.Handicap#',
 Events.Updatedon = '#form.Updatedon#',
 Times.EventTime = '#form.Times.EventTime#',
 Times.Comment = '#form.Comment#',
 Dates.BeginDate = '#form.Dates.BeginDate#',

In the event file that contains the "Edit" link to the updateform.cfm I have this:

   Edit

Thanks, I'm desparate for an answer tonight.

I seem to have an easy fix for this that doesn't break search-engine-safe urls, but to
be honest I'm not entirely sure why it works. Its an asp script.

I tested a .cfm page and just got my standard custom 404 page... which I've
implemented in IIS and not CF. My custom 404 page is the ''boomerang 404'' or ''judo
404'' asp script that came out to help combat nimda.

When I tested on nul.dbm, I got the reported CF bug, with my path plastered on screen
for all to see.

So I deleted the .dbm file type from IIS I don't use it, and apparently cf 4.5.1 sp2
doesn't either. Now I get the appropriate custom 404. I still have the ''check that
page exists'' thing unchecked for my FakeURL pages, which are unaffected.

Since this is an asp script, I don't want to copy it into this email. Anyone familiar
with the thing give it a shot and see what happens. I'd appreciate hearing if this
really works or I've just not tested it thoroughly enough. I'll zip it up with some
instrs shortly.

Problem:

Requests for certain DOS-devices are parsed by the isapi filter that
handles .cfm and .dbm and result in error messages containing the
physical path to the web root.

Vulnerable:

- Coldfusion 5.0 on Windows 2000 w. IIS5
- Other versions were not tested.

CF 4.5.1 SP2 on NT4 SP6a has this vulnerability as well. Luckily it
appears that the problem is mitigated by having a site wide error
handler.

I have to admit I am extremely unhappy with the workaround MM appears to

have suggested.

an important topic so I'd like to two-cents too, tia.

It can be useful to separate your raw data, from your procedures, from your
interface. With server-side generation of pages we've already got data
separated out... we're familiar with that concept.

Classic ColdFusion pioneered putting higher-level instructions into the
presentation layer... CFQUERY is a simple instruction which invokes an
expanded set of rules on the server. (Compare the PHP/ASP approach, where
the instructions are hardwired into the presentation layer.)

I'm guessing that person may have gotten to "kinda hokey" by not knowing
the current and near-term encapsulation methods... maybe they had heard
about "Enterprise Java Beans", and didn't know about parallel scalability
models.

Maybe you could ask that person what they meant, specifically...? ;-)

It places all queries within the transaction into a single transaction
context - so you can commit or rollback all changes made by all of the

Subject: Using ... Why?

Are cftransaction tags necessary for certain types of queries (e.g.
queries
involving Merant driver access to a DBaseIII database?).

I am working with some code from the past and I notice the

tags in some areas but not in others. Recently I have added more
stress/queries to the DBaseIII databases and am noticing big slowdowns
in
the processes that require access to those files...

In:

http://www.cfcertification.com/cfdocs/CFML_Language_Reference/2_ColdFusi

ags/lr2_098.htm

They say it can be used to group multiple transactions into one single
business event. What does that mean? Does this mean the database will
be
locked out until all the functions within the tags are
finished? Is this a requirement for certain types of db's?

Any help/ideas appreciated, you people have been amazing. Thanks.

How to: Pass query string from frameset page

I need to figure a way to pass a dynamic variable from a framed page to the
sub-pages called in the frameset. The frameset page would be something like
this:

Problem is that the url variables passed through to this page disappear
before they arrive at the sub-pages. Is there any way to accomplish this?

Also remember that incrementValue() is slower than using x=x+1 in this type
of scenario and could be slowing it down even more.

You need to lock all memory variables: Session, Application and Server. Lock
every read or write to any of those scopes. Use the SCOPE attribute of
CFLOCK, rather than the NAME attribute.

It's very important to do this. Unlocked references to memory variables
commonly cause server crashes.

Its called "ColdFusion Graphing Server", but that's only going to stop one
of the ntconsoles.

Have you checked that you are locking _all_ your references to shared scope
variables? That's another cause of CF server wigging out.

Is there a way to use numberformat so you can show these as they are... when
I stick .03322323 into the database, it comes out

3.32232299E-2

Can't use decimalformat, need the multiple decimals ... numberformat either
padds too many spaces or doesn't give me enough..

Anyone have any good recommendations for formating variable sized numbers
with decimals?

2002-04-19 Thread Dave Watts

Jochem posted this to the cf-server mailing list, but I think it affects
enough people to warrant cross-posting it here. I've confirmed the existence
of the problem on my machine, running CF 5, Win2K and IIS 5.

FYI:

Problem:

Requests for certain DOS-devices are parsed by the isapi filter that
handles .cfm and .dbm and result in error messages containing the
physical path to the web root.

Vulnerable:
===

Bob,

Thanks for the input. I don't have a Component Services under

In your Component Services Under Adminsitrative Tools, on the right
highlight the Services (local)and it should display a list of all the
services running on your system. Find ColdFusion Graphing Server, ColdFusion
Management Repository Server and ColdFusion Monitoring Server. Right click
on each one and select Properties, in the menu you should see a drop down
menu and Services Status: Under Status click Stop and then select Disable
from the drop down menu. Do this for each of these services and then test
your system to see if that resolves the error. -Bob

Billy. check your system processes running, we've had some problems with the
graphing engine eating resources. In the the system processes window look
for consolejavaNT I think or something to that effect. If it's there it's
sure to be hogging resource. We jus went into the services control panel and
disabled it, unless of course you're using the graphing features in CF5. Let
me know what you find.

Hi,

I've got a CF5 Server running on NT4 and it seems as though the CF
service
is causing the server to crash. Something is causing 100% processor
tie-up,
which hogs memory and eventually crashes the server. I've looked for
endless loops and the such in my apps and haven't been able to find any.
These are some entries that I'm concerned about from my SERVER.LOG and

what's causing them, but I'm hoping that they're related to my problem.
If
anybody could shed some light on these log entries it would be

thanks.

Re: Server Enterprise versus Server Professional - what is the diff?

Your purchased Merant drivers should work fine, since they are at the OS
level and not the App server level. If you can set up the Merant drivers
through the ODBC applet in the control panel, you'll absolutely be fine.

I take it you're probably using IE 5. That's a decent piece of
software, better (IMHO) than it's Windows counterpart, EXCEPT it
doesn't handle forms worth a crap. I can't develop in it because you
can't refresh a form post. Whereas you get a dialogue in all other
versions of all other browsers asking you to click OK to refresh the
post, IE 5 for Mac just drops them. And as you say, if you try and
click your back button to submit the form again, the values are
generally gone.

Bummer!

Using ... Why?

2002-04-19 Thread Charles Nahm

Are cftransaction tags necessary for certain types of queries (e.g. queries
involving Merant driver access to a DBaseIII database?).

I am working with some code from the past and I notice the
tags in some areas but not in others. Recently I have added more
stress/queries to the DBaseIII databases and am noticing big slowdowns in
the processes that require access to those files...

In:

http://www.cfcertification.com/cfdocs/CFML_Language_Reference/2_ColdFusion_T
ags/lr2_098.htm

They say it can be used to group multiple transactions into one single
business event. What does that mean? Does this mean the database will be
locked out until all the functions within the tags are
finished? Is this a requirement for certain types of db's?

Any help/ideas appreciated, you people have been amazing. Thanks.

RE: Histograms in CF 4.5?

2002-04-19 Thread BillyC

I'd do it in SQL (implementation varies by DB):

select sum(requestTime) as requestTotal,
hour(datefield) as requestHour from yourTable
group by hour(datefield)
order by hour(datefield)

Now you've got a simple recordset that's easily outputted.

(You still have to work out the formatting of the hour string - 1 PM
instead of 13 - but this is easily done using SQL udf's or CF)

I think I have a "can't see the forest through the trees" type of
problem.

I have an access database table that logs the timing of an http request
many times during the day.

So, the table content looks like this:

717   Pass   7656 ms04/19/02 2:30:32 PM
716   Pass   1672 ms04/19/02 2:20:58 PM

714   Pass   5281 ms04/19/02 2:01:02 PM

The first column is just an incremental counter. What is not obvious
from the above table is how the date and time fields work.

Date/Time are ONE field in the access table, using the date/time field
type. I output them in CF to display separate columns using Date() and
Time().

What I want to do is a histogram by hour of the day that depicts the
average access time (second column) since the inception of the test.

I am not concerned with the date, but rather the hour of the day. S,
what I want is the following:

12 AM   Avg Time
1 AMAvg Time
2 AMAvg Time
3 AMAvg Time
4 AMAvg Time
5 AMAvg Time
6 AMAvg Time
7 AMAvg Time
.
.
.

My hunch is to use a CFLOOP with the #hour(datefield)# approach.

Is this the best way??

RE: Client Variable Scrabble

2002-04-19 Thread Owens, Howard

FWIW: It looks like we solved this problem. The final piece of the puzzle
was to delete all of the old cookies for the site on each user's machine. I
did that two days ago and we haven't had a problem since. If you've been
following this thread, you may remember our users where going through a
proxy server. We switched them all to direct connect to the Net. I think the
problem lingered after that because they still had the old cookies (set when
they went through the proxy server) on their machines.

Yep - you have the OLD CFIDE directory (the one that came with CF 4.5).
Find the cfide directory that CF 5 just installed, point to it and viola!
this happens if you have futzed around with the default location of that
directory - or possibly with the root location of the web site.

Re: cfswitch vs switch

2002-04-19 Thread Marlon Moyer

I got curious and tested it out for myself. Here's the results:

cfscript switch - 600 ms
cfswitch - 181 ms

for this code:

j = 0;
i = 0;

for (i = 1;i lte 1000;i=incrementvalue(i)) {
 j = RandRange(1,1);

 switch (j) {
  case "j lte 250": {
   j = j +1;
   break;
  }
  case "j lte 500": {
   j=j+1;
   break;
  }
  case "j lte 750": {
   j=j+1;
   break;
  }
  case "j lte 1000": {
   j=j+1;
   break;
  }
 }

}

cfscript switch - #out# ms

RE: CF and "Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Neil Clark - =TMM=

Hey John,

Business Logic is a process which can be applied to anything,
ColdFusion, ASP, Java or Duplo Bricks. With any programming
language/methodology you apply certain business logic - I would
challenge him to back that statement up with some hard facts and if he
has trouble he is more than likely anti-CF .

You get used to is, Ask some die-hard CF'ers about ASP :-)!

RE: CF and "Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Rick Walters

I think I would have taken a different tact with your subcontractor.

Beginning with the assumption that he considers himself the center of
the known universe and probably has had some dealings with asking his IT
department for something unnecessisarily complex in the past... I would
have to agree with his statement (what else would he hear?).

"But, realistically [insert subcontractor name with casual smile] i'm
sure it's not the language itself. In fact, most "business logic" that
higher managment and people "we" hire to analyze our systems can imagine
will be difficult for most web programmers to implent (compliments his
intellectual prowess). But in this case, our team has "me" to implement
whatever business logic you might need, and I'm sure that given two
rocks and a sharp stick (throw in some such senseless analogy) I'd be
able to give you what you want. Give me a great programming language
like Cold Fusion and I might be able to get it done today! It's just
that fast and easy to use."

More of a philosophical question. I was meeting with a potential
subcontractor the other day and he made the remark that once you get
into
serious business logic, cold fusion is "kinda hokey." Anyone care to
possibly elaborate on what he might've meant? Or is this just another
one of
those anti-CF prejudices?

Just wondering,

Jumping in on this one real late, but since I have a different opinion than
most, I'd agree with the subcontractor guy in a way, at least for now. With
Neo, all the hokeyness is replaced with incredible flexibility in addition
to the easy learning curve...
In CF up to now, you have to jump through hoops to seperate your programs
into tiers, logic, UI, and data. UDF's allow us to seperate out the logic
side, and to a certain extent the UI, but the data tier (cfquery, or
cfstoredproc), is still mushed in wherever it happens to be needed linearly.
This leads to needlessly duplicated code, and the necessity for someone to
read through all of the code to get a grip on all of the logic that makes
the program tick. A good CF methodology could make up for this, but it's
still a linear and inefficient way to go about getting something done.
The thing is, CF is so powerful, the language itself makes up for some of
the duplicity, and linearity in that the same app in another language needs
to be much longer codewise.

Re: Server Enterprise versus Server Professional - what is the diff?

2002-04-19 Thread Pete Ruckelshaus

Personally, I think CF Pro can handle the needs of the vast majority of
CF-based web sites. If you don't need those "extras", you should certainly
get Pro, and if in the future you realize you need some of those extras,
just upgrade your license to Enterprise.

To answer your points specifically, you can most certainly use SQL2K and
Access with Pro, since they use standard ODBC and Microsoft's drivers. You
can also use Oracle, since there are ODBC drivers for Oracle, you just won't
get the Merant drivers (which I never use anyway, and we do use Oracle).
Clustered servers are (basically) only necessary if you are in a redundant
or load-balanced configuration, and if maximum uptime is absolutely
necessary.

RE: Form fields clearing (Macs only) after clicking Back

2002-04-19 Thread Adrian Lynch

I'd do it as two different pages to begin with, it helps you get your head
around it, BUT, try the single page form afterwards, it's great to be able
to plug one page in to a site only changing a few things if any! :O)

I wouldn't suggest posting the form variables back through - can get pretty
messy. I'd suggest trying to encapsulate your code. i.e. have one page
that is both the form and the action page, that way if there is an error you
can trap it and drop down through the code to redisplay the form with the
error message very basically:

value="form.fieldname">
etc...

even better - use one of the custom tags that comes as part of fusebox
(can't remember the name) then you don't have to ponse around with this code

Send any values the user has submited back to the form page, by the look of
your form, you don't want to be doing this as url variables. Sessions
maybe?? Or build it in flash MX :O)

Or as a second thought, have the error page contain a form with the submit
button as the Back button, send back all the values they have given and hope
they don't hit the browser back button!

Subject: Form fields clearing (Macs only) after clicking Back

I have created some input forms. Certain fields are
mandatory. After user clicks Submit, I check to see
if they have been filled in. If they haven't, I display
an error message on a new page and instruct the user to
click the Back button and correct the error. This all
works fine.

Unfortunately, when Macintosh users click the Back button
all of the information on the form is gone. This does
not happen to PC users. There is no meta refresh code
in the form page that would cause the page to reload.

The code is here:
http://www.HighCaliber.com/ifp
 Click "No Borders Film Application"
 Click "I agree"
 Fill in one item (Project Title) on the form
 Click Submit
 Error message is displayed.
 Click Back
 See if the Project Title you entered is still there

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly
appreciated.

FAQ:

RE: CF and "Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Mike Brunt

In vindication of what Dave said but also in glorious praise of what CF can
do and heavens knows what will be able to do and hopefully as a help to
someone somewhere

We were tasked to take a legacy accounting/billing system, mainframe based
(IBM 3270) with a DB2 database, running OS/2 via Smalltalk and rebuild the
whole thing in ColdFusion. The original app had almost non-existent
documentation (I know that's unusual!) and had been reverse engineered as
best as could be before we started. Smalltalk is basically an object
orientated language and is more of a client-server paradigm. We are being
greatly successful, we are on time (it's a long 12-month project the
original app lists all the Gas piping and meters for the whole of Southern
California) and we will finish on time - on budget. We have turned
cartwheels, danced around really weird database designs with multiple
occurrences of the same data sometimes in as many as 15 different tables. I
could go on and on, the bottom-line point being, we have done all of this
using a simple little vastly underrated giant of an environment called
ColdFusion, and ODBC DB2 client and JavaScript.

Lastly we used FuseBox and as a result of my comfort with that methodology
we also built a tool that is allowing use to create documentation as we
develop and code using FuseDocs as the foundation for that. For all the non
believers out there it can be done in ColdFusion it really CAN!

Well, when you start looking at higher-end applications, there are lots of
things that CF can't do by itself, and in many cases, other platforms let
you do those sorts of things.

For example, building truly distributed applications requires the ability to
run distributed transactions, and to have asynchronous message handling, and
the ability to connect to legacy data not accessible via ODBC. CF doesn't
directly support any of this, although you can work around all of these
issues. The J2EE platform supports this kind of stuff out of the box, as
does the MS platform via COM/COM+/MTS/MSMQ/.NET/etc.

However, for most applications, this stuff just isn't needed, and it's a lot
easier and cheaper to use CF in that case.

Yes, thanks very much to everyone for your help. I found the Win2k

You do not need to reinstall your os on nt4 or 2000. You do a parallel
install of nt on the machine and copy over the following files.
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q142660

 Ntoskrnl.exe (Ntkrnlmp.exe has to be copied and renamed to
Ntoskrnl.exe)
   Hal.dll (System specific Hal*.dll has to copied and renamed to
Hal.dll)
   Kernel32.dll
   Ntdll.dll
   Winsrv.dll
   Win32k.sys (New for Windows NT 4.0)

YOu can use a program called utomp.exe which comes with the resource
kit. I have done this many times with no problems.

You don't need to reinstall CF, but you MAY need to reinstall your OS,
depending upon which one it is. I know that going from single --> dual
CPU in NT4 the multiprocessor kernel needs to be installed, not sure
about Win2K but I would assume that it's a similar deal.

RE: Form fields clearing (Macs only) after clicking Back

2002-04-19 Thread Andy Ewings

I wouldn't suggest posting the form variables back through - can get pretty
messy. I'd suggest trying to encapsulate your code. i.e. have one page
that is both the form and the action page, that way if there is an error you
can trap it and drop down through the code to redisplay the form with the
error message very basically:

value="form.fieldname">
etc...

even better - use one of the custom tags that comes as part of fusebox
(can't remember the name) then you don't have to ponse around with this code

Or as a second thought, have the error page contain a form with the submit

I have created some input forms. Certain fields are
mandatory. After user clicks Submit, I check to see
if they have been filled in. If they haven't, I display
an error message on a new page and instruct the user to
click the Back button and correct the error. This all
works fine.

Unfortunately, when Macintosh users click the Back button
all of the information on the form is gone. This does
not happen to PC users. There is no meta refresh code
in the form page that would cause the page to reload.

The code is here:
http://www.HighCaliber.com/ifp
 Click "No Borders Film Application"
 Click "I agree"
 Fill in one item (Project Title) on the form
 Click Submit
 Error message is displayed.
 Click Back
 See if the Project Title you entered is still there

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly
appreciated.

RE: CF and "Business Logic

I think it just demonstrates that some people don't get the separation
between Coding/Architecture Styles/Preferences and best practices.

It always depends on your particular environment. Just remember "if all you

More of a philosophical question. I was meeting with a potential
subcontractor the other day and he made the remark that once you get into
serious business logic, cold fusion is "kinda hokey." Anyone care to
possibly elaborate on what he might've meant? Or is this just another one of
those anti-CF prejudices?

Just wondering,

It looks like databasing the credit cards is going to be necessary and

Subject: CF Server Logging Questions

Hi,

I've got a CF5 Server running on NT4 and it seems as though the CF
service
is causing the server to crash. Something is causing 100% processor
tie-up,
which hogs memory and eventually crashes the server. I've looked for
endless loops and the such in my apps and haven't been able to find any.
These are some entries that I'm concerned about from my SERVER.LOG and
WEBSERVER.LOG log files. I don't really know what these errors mean or
what's causing them, but I'm hoping that they're related to my problem.
If
anybody could shed some light on these log entries it would be
appreciated,
thanks.

2002-04-19 Thread Dave Watts

Re: IsDefined and brackets

2002-04-19 Thread cf refactoring

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I knew I could use isdefined("aStruct.aField") but
I was just wondering what the rationale was behind
invalid syntax error for
isdefined("aStruct['aField']"). Dave's explanation
that I should really think of it as two separate tests
was pretty good.

Also, I don't like to use isdefined("aStruct.aField")
because sometimes I might have spaces in "aField" and
that would cause IsDefined to choke, so
StructKeyExists() is the way to go for me.

Its called "ColdFusion Graphing Server", but that's only going to stop one
of the ntconsoles.

Have you checked that you are locking _all_ your references to shared scope
variables? That's another cause of CF server wigging out.

RE: CF and Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Dave Watts

> I'm a beginning CF programmer, and I'm not sure what "business
> logic" means. Could someone explain it?

Since several people here have already explained this as well as it can be
explained, I won't try to do better. However, it's worth pointing out that
within a typical application, you have other components in addition to
business logic components. For example, in a CF application, you have
presentation logic (the code responsible for rendering the HTML that the
user will see) and you have data logic (your SQL or stored procedures).

One of the key challenges for an application developer is to properly
separate these tiers of logic. This makes the application easier to
maintain, as you can then make changes to a specific tier with minimal
effect to the other tiers.

While you can, of course, do all of this stuff in CF, or any other language,
CF doesn't force you to clearly partition your logic into separate tiers -
you can mix them all together in one big ball of confusion. Good CF
developers don't do that, but CF doesn't stop you, or even incline you in a
different direction, and that might be why the guy said CF was "kinda hokey"
for business logic. Java, for example, provides a clearer path for
separation of logic, although a bad Java programmer can just ignore that
path. Because it's more difficult to do the simplest things in Java than it
is in CF, the average Java programmer has to know more to do the same amount
of work, and is less likely to be a bad programmer, all other things being
equal. Before anyone gets miffed at that conclusion, remember that in real
life all other things aren't always equal.

RE: WOT: MS Excel! Help me or shot me!

2002-04-19 Thread Dave Wilson

Nick,

You could start by creating the list '#' and then create another list of the
'in use' numbers then simply loop through the 'in use' checking if the
current value is within the '#' list and consequently doing a lookup to add
the value.

The code below should get you started.

SELECT # as references, inuse as answers
from "sheetname$"

SELECT $
FROM "sheetname$"
WHERE # = #this#

Why not just use the compare function of CF instead of using excel? Then
using
 do a loop through it if the value eq 0 add the colums etc. etc..I
hope I am making sense !!!

Re: WOT: MS Excel! Help me or shot me!

2002-04-19 Thread Eric Dawson

I created the following
List (named range)
1  3  5  6  9

A  B  C
#  $  Check
1  22 =IF(ISNA(MATCH(A3,List,0)),0,1)
2  11 =IF(ISNA(MATCH(A4,List,0)),0,1)
.
9  45 =IF(ISNA(MATCH(A11,List,0)),0,1)

Tot =sumproduct(b3:b11,c3:c11)

bunch of problems doing it like this though - so there is an easier or
slicker way.

What is he wanting to do? This might be fun.

Try renaming your stored proc input parameter

Some of the things will apply to CF4 as well, but obviously there are a load
of new features in CF5 that aren't in CF4

I'm sure there is a CF4 matrix somewhere, but it eludes me at the minute -

Billy. check your system processes running, we've had some problems with the
graphing engine eating resources. In the the system processes window look
for consolejavaNT I think or something to that effect. If it's there it's
sure to be hogging resource. We jus went into the services control panel and
disabled it, unless of course you're using the graphing features in CF5. Let
me know what you find.

If
anybody could shed some light on these log entries it would be
appreciated,
thanks.

Re: CF and "Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Yves Arsenault

The ones that I have found so far have been federal sites (to my knowledge,
from what I remember)
Heritage Canada is one:
http://www.pch.gc.ca/

Unfortunatly, I don't have many book marked or know them by heart, I'll keep
my eye open and send the others to you if and when I can find them.
I know there are some others

We (the small company that I'm currently working for) are getting a contract
from some government translators to make an information management web
application, that would help them deal with their clientel.
And keep records of the files they've translated

Ride on brother, stay away from oracle until you can afford $400/hr or until
you need to impress the VC's. I myself don't enjoy paying for cocky asses to
fly around in MIG jets and propose National ID cards to the government -
regardless of how much faster

To answer your question, yes - you can use SQL server and Access just fine
with professional. You have an option of using ODBC or OLEDB with SQL
server.

RE: CF and "Business Logic

2002-04-19 Thread Tim Claremont

Future Q/A session with this applicant:

Q: What is the pay?
A: It is kinda hokey. Our corporate business logic encourages us to
streamline the payment process to allow us to retain financial
instruments in our accounts for greater periods of time. This is to the
detriment of the employees who actually need a consistent paycheck, but
the benefits to the company are outstanding.

Q: And the vacation time?
A: Equally hokey. We encourage every employee to take vacation from 5 pm
Friday until 8 am Monday. This is unpaid vacation, of course, but in the
interest of treating everyone fairly, we think this 15 weeks of time off
per year is quite reasonable.

Man, this conversation could go on for a long time...

REReplaceNoCase(string, ']*>', '', 'all')
This will look for an open bracket (<) that may or may not be followed by a / followed

(>). This will be replaced by a blank for all occurrences in the string. Is this what

FYI...anyone who's interested, Verisign will be offering recurring-fee

What solutions have you all used?

Subject: CF Server Logging Questions

Hi,

I've got a CF5 Server running on NT4 and it seems as though the CF
service
is causing the server to crash. Something is causing 100% processor
tie-up,
which hogs memory and eventually crashes the server. I've looked for
endless loops and the such in my apps and haven't been able to find any.
These are some entries that I'm concerned about from my SERVER.LOG and
WEBSERVER.LOG log files. I don't really know what these errors mean or
what's causing them, but I'm hoping that they're related to my problem.
If
anybody could shed some light on these log entries it would be
appreciated,
thanks.

Regular Expression Question

2002-04-19 Thread Smith, Daron [PA]

If I want to do a regular expression replace to remove several (but not all
HTML tags) what is the syntax that I should use. I want the expresion to
find, for example, the '' tag regardless of what is
in the middle. I've tried this ","","ALL")> but that doesn't
seem to work.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help
