In many situations though simpy GROUP'ing the data with CFOUTPUT would
eliminate the need for any other queries at all... (just a thought)

In need of a SQL guru to answer some vbscript/ADO/SQL questions (for pay

RE: light editor (was: oh, man)

2002-05-09 Thread Mark A. Kruger - CFG

Yes but... is there really that much money in basement sites? I think one of
the reasons why so many of them ARE in Perl and PHP is that they are done on
a shoestring budget. I want CF to move in the other direction - then I can
afford to hire someone to do all my basement sites for me (ha).

OK, so let's take a look at this from another direction. You're a Cold
Fusion developer with a "day job" that shells out the grand for CF Pro (plus
the web server and OS), and the $300+ for CF development studio. Yet, you
want to build a functional, database driven site for your brother's business
(or to show off your dog, or whatever) and you want to host it on an old
computer you have set up as a server that's connected to your cable
modem/DSL line. So, would you rather (a) pirate said software from your
employer (not a good thing); (b) use another cheaper/free technology like
PERL or PHP; (c) have an inexpensive but still very functional and familiar
coding tool and a free/cheap way of serving up CF pages from the server you
have hooked up to your cable modem (or that your web host didn't have to pay
one red cent for, so they said "sure, we'll install CF Express")?

Hmm, let me see. I pick "C". I just turned down a job offer because I
didn't want to stop developing in CF (offer was from a JSP/Websphere
shop)...

Not everyone who NEEDS these tools at home is an "amateur".

Well I will pick (d) which was not on the list. If my brother had

RE: light editor (was: oh, man)

2002-05-09 Thread Joshua Miller

Personally I'd choose B. I don't care if I can build small piddly sites
in CF - actually that's the best way to learn other technologies is to
do the sites for friends/family using Open Source solutions.

If I were you, I'd go the JSP route. Apache, Tomcat and Cocoon are free,
easy to use and perfect for exactly what you're talking about.

How exactly would MM make money to further develop CF and CF Express if
it's free? I'd rather the resources go into making DWMX a better tool
from a coder standpoint and making the next version of CF Server even
more feature rich.

That's just my opinion though - and you are entitled to yours.

I agree, pay the $19.95 a month. One thing to keep in mind is, what will
the phone/cable company do. If you read you contract, you are not suppose
to host any servers of any kind on that line. In Kansas City, the cable
carrier has shut off inbound http requests to it's subscribers (an easy
thing to do at there router!!!). I would not be surprised to others
following suit!

LOL! Yeah, well put! CF is a professional development tool - if you want
to do free sites and you can't justify paying for CF then CF clearly
isn't the answer. PHP and JSP are excellent technologies and can be done
for little to no money. I leave ASP out because I hate it, but it may be
a good alternative as well.

I just setup Apache / Tomcat / Cocoon on my personal server (Being
served off a DirecWAY satellite in about 30 mins - as soon as the guy's
done installing it.) and I think it's a fabulous alternative to CF for
free/cheap development.

RE: Fw: Oh man, no more HomeSite/CFStudio, for real :-(

2002-05-09 Thread Costas Piliotis

What I actually meant was that it shows the files within the directory tree
on the left panel. That is a bit awkward when you have a tree that's really
deep. The way cf studio did it was more efficient. You had your tree at
the top and the file list at the bottom. That difference I can tell I'm
going to hate...

The file window (and databases)? Those are located in panels (which can be
on the left or right). Files are in the Files panel, databases are in the
Applications panel.

I thought he meant those buttons just to the left of the window, where the
line number, auto-complete, etc are in CF Studio.

He meant the tree on the left.

the areas it will take some effort for CFers to get used to, and we can hope
for improvment in this area in future revs.

Insert statement using '#session.arrBasketLit[Request.idx][3]#',

2002-05-09 Thread Dave Clay

When using the Request.idx session variable, and the variable has an apostrophe in a
string, it creates the following error.

  Error Diagnostic Information
  ODBC Error Code = 37000 (Syntax error or access violation)

  [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 21: Incorrect syntax near
'l'.

  The error occurred while processing an element with a general identifier of
(CFQUERY), occupying document position (75:1) to (75:65).

Anyone know how to work around this? You help would be appreciated.

OT:SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Paul Giesenhagen

I have two tables I am trying to join, one is a header and one is the links
under that header.

header table:
id, header

links table
id, headerid, link, link_title

I am writing a join query to pull up all the headers and the links that go
with a particular header, but I if there are no links associated with the
header, it won't display anything. I want it to show the headers with 0
links or with 100 links associated.

Query is:

select h.id, h.header,  l.link, l.link_title
from headers h, links l
where f.sub_object = l.headerid
and f.sub_object = h.id
group by h.header, f.state, f.sort, l.link, l.link_title, h.id

Any help would be appreciated.

2002-05-09 Thread Joshua Miller

Hehehe ... Not a bad idea - I see where you're coming from, personally I
think all software should be free if it's not being used for profit.
Then we wouldn't have to worry about the free sites and community sites.

As a side note, we do FULL CF hosting for $16.95 a month - not too
fancy, but it'll get you full tag support and Access or mySQL database.

RE: SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Van Vliet, Scott

With SQL Server, you would do a LEFT JOIN:

select h.id, h.header,  l.link, l.link_title
from headers h LEFT JOIN links l ON f.sub_object = l.headerid
where f.sub_object = h.id
group by h.header, f.state, f.sort, l.link, l.link_title, h.id

Which DB are you using?

udf help

2002-05-09 Thread Deanna Schneider

Hi Folks,
I'm trying to modify Raymond Camden's highlight udf to allow for multiple
terms, and I'm not having a lot of luck. But, I've never written a udf,
so

Here's where I'm at so far, basically, my thinking is that I have to loop
over the regular expression for each term passed in, yes? But, it's not
working - doesn't throw an error, but doesn't highlight anything either.
(Yes, I realize that only the Not matchase part would loop right now...one
piece at a time.)

function highLight(str,word) {
 var front = "";
 var i = 0;
 var back = "";
 var matchCase = false;
 if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 3) front = arguments[3];
 if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 4) back = arguments[4];
 if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 5) matchCase = arguments[5];
 if(NOT matchCase)
 for(i=1; i lt listlen(word, " "); i = i + 1)
 return REReplaceNoCase(str,"#listgetat(word,i)#","#front#\1#back#","ALL");

 else return REReplace(str,"(#word#)","#front#\1#back#","ALL");

}

Re: Turning a query recordset into a comma-delimited string/file

2002-05-09 Thread Scott Weikert

Well these are rough estimates, and your server performance may vary - but
in my testing, a recordset with about 20 fields, and just under 3000
records, the file that ran this through CSVFormat (among some other
functions beforehand, which take up part of the total) ran around 35
seconds.

But the server I'm running this on (our dev server) isn't the
hardest-hitting box out there, either. Your mileage may vary.

Re[2]: DWMX Install w/o RDS?

2002-05-09 Thread Debbie Dickerson

Dreamweaver is actually not really related to why you see the change from it being
called "Allaire FTP & RDS" to "Macromedia FTP & RDS". That change was made in CF
Studio 5 (which was released post-merger). If you had upgraded to Studio 5 at some
point, you would have seen that same change without Dreamweaver ever being installed
onto the machine.

RE: SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Cantrell, Adam

I can say that it's ANSI 92 compliant and that it works on SQL
server/Access. It's just a short way of saying:

SELECT h.id, h.header,  l.link, l.link_title
FROM headers h LEFT OUTER JOIN links l
ON h.id = l.headerid

To me, the other way is more simple to digest, but this might be a better
approach if you're looking for portability.

Boy, that's a biggie.
I've used ActiveEdit by cfdev
However I know it does not work on the mac
So I would presume it will not work on Unix.
You could always roll your own using a Flash front end and a CF backend...

Re: SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Dina Hess

paul,

it's my understanding that the *= syntax is legacy syntax; i
believe you'll want ansi syntax to effect compatibility with a
most dbms's:

SELECT h.id, h.header,  l.link, l.link_title
FROM headers h LEFT JOIN links l ON h.id = l.headerid

RE: SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Rob Baxter

The older Transact SQL syntax (*=) is pretty widely supported, but as Adam
suggested for portability (and IMO readability) it is better to use the ANSI
SQL syntax (LEFT OUTER JOIN).

In addition, both Microsoft and Sybase reccommend using ANSI style joins.

Re: SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Paul Giesenhagen

That being the case, what about this query?

select h.id, h.header, f.state, f.sort, l.link, l.link_title
from headers h, fusion f, link l
f.sub_object = l.headerid
where f.owner = '#prefs.indexid#'
and f.sub_object = h.id
group by h.header, f.state, f.sort, l.link, l.link_title, h.id

There are more then two tables involved here.. You can't outer join on
joined tables...

Excel

2002-05-09 Thread Thane Sherrington

I don't have the option to use CFObject to work with Excel (it's not on the
server) so I'm trying to use CFContent. This works for basic stuff, but
I'm wondering if I can a)create charts through it, or b)add to a precreated
workbook so that I can set up the charts to pull data from the cells I fill
in with CFContent.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I've a customer who's wedded to
radar charts so I'm trying to get one that works.)

cfsavecontent

2002-05-09 Thread David Schmidt

Does using cfsavecontent cause excess overhead / memory usage on the server
during a page request? I suspect that it would set thisTag.generatedContent
to null, which is fine for after the end tag is encounted. But the question
really is "Does the start tag cause a new variable to be created, containing
the contents of the wrapped code as it processes? Or is it simply copied to
the memory space after the content is completely generated?". Does anyone
have inside knowledge on this one?

Thanks,

Dave Schmidt

Re: Excel

you can create an excel spreadsheet that uses a "web query" to get data for
charts etc. simpler than even cfcontent if it does the trick for ya. I can
do a sample file so you can see it work - need a little time. hr or two.

I think web query is pretty good for picky up small amounts of data.

when I moved it to my hosted space, it fails, I think because Excel isn't
installed on the hosting company's server. (I wept bitter tears when I
realized this - but it was my own fault for not testing a simple page
before putting in the work.)

(If there's a way to do this without Excel installed on the server, I'd
love to hear about it.)

I think this will really work! I've just created a web query (amazing what
one can do when one puts one's mind to it) and it's pulling in
data.  You're a godsend!

Inserting and pulling CLOBS...

2002-05-09 Thread Yager, Brian T Contractor/NCCIM

Has anyone worked with CLOBS before? I am having a devil of a time inserting
into them if the data is over 4000 characters long. Plus, When I pull them, I
can't get the whole thing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am getting this error when inserting...

"[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]ORA-01704: string literal too long "

Thanks,

RE: SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Ben Johnson

Are you talking about doing something like:

select h.id, h.header, f.state, f.sort, l.link, l.link_title
from headers h
left join fusion f
on f.sub_object = l.headerid
left join link l
on f.linkID = l.linkID

You can join to an already joined table. Just think of it as Table1 JOIN
Table2 is a whole new table. Then the next join joins to that new table.

Or maybe I'm just missing something.

Re: SQL Question

2002-05-09 Thread Paul Giesenhagen

Yes,

fusion is:

id, owner, sub_object, type, sort, state

This is the whole menu system So

OWNER 1 can have SUB_objects 2,3,4,6,10 ect..

So each HEADER id will be a sub_object of the #prefs.indexid# value

I then look into the links table to grab all links associated with the
headerid value that relates to the id value in the header table and the
sub_object value in the fusion table.

Make sense?

RE: WYSIWYG-cross browser

There's been a few threads on this before. Check the cf-talk archives. I
think there's an applet that'll work in Nutscrape, Opera, and IE as long as
they have jvm installed...

RE: Problem with comparenocase vs "is" in CFIF

2002-05-09 Thread Margaret Fisk

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a strange error that I can't figure out and was hoping for
some help. I've included the "problem" code below.

Here is what I'm doing:
I have a form that includes a report table. Each of the headers is a submit
button with the name sort_order and the value of the text that displays
(taken from the columnlist variable below). I also pass the previous
sort_order button in a hidden field called sort_order_hidden so if the user
choses the next 10 records, they will still be sorted by the selected value.

I started with using "is" to compare the list value for the display names
with the button value (which is the display name). However, on one of my
pages, only when passing the sort order through the hidden field (the
CFELSEIF), it does not find any matching value when running the statement
 (I displayed the results and the value
is there, but it is not considered a match. I changed to the code to and now it matches the first value
(or when I remove the CFBREAK, the last value) in the loop even if for
example, the list item is Company Name and the Form.sort_order_hidden is
Phone.

As you can tell, I'm stumped and would appreciate any advice, assistance
etc.

Thanks in advance,
Margaret

If the page was called directly and not from a form submission you could get
that error because no FORM fields are defined.

Is there a way (perhaps in OnEndRequest.cfm) to obtain template execution

Not sure if this is an error or just a bad practice, but you don't need the
# signs in your variable declaration (cfset)

works just fine. Also you don't need to generate that var at all you can
just do a list loop like this:

#formField# = #evaluate(formField)#

OT: Getting data from excel97

2002-05-09 Thread William H. Bowen

My turn to post off-topic! Sorry!

I have an excel file that is provided to me on a semi-regular basis. It
contains names of files, their owners and version numbers.
I import the data into a table in MSSQLServer 7 using DTS, no problem
there...BUT

and there is always a but...

There is a column full of numbers in the excell file that doesn't copy
completely in to the table _unless_ I go through the column manually and
place an apostrophe in front of every number.

Oh...and non importing issue seems to happen randomly, sometimes one row,
sometimes 50.

My questions then, are these:
1. Is there a way that I can append the apostrophe to each row in that
particular column in the excel file before/during import?
2. Is there something I can do to avoid this problem altogether and import
the data properly the first time? (i.e., am I missing something?)

I think that should cover it for now.

TIA

RE: Getting data from excel97

2002-05-09 Thread Reuben Poon

Will,

I've had lots of problems with Excel and exporting its data. Take a look at
the first row (or first few rows) of data in the Excel file. If it's a
blank value or a string, then Excel will convert the entire column to that
datatype. Sometimes you need to put data in the first few rows to get Excel
to not do this.

Not sure if this made sense or not. Send me an email if you're still having
problems.

Maybe you left the "not" off of your "is" comparison? Looks like it.

"NOT CompareNoCase" is equivalent to "is" or "eq"
"CompareNoCase" is equivalent to "is not" or "neq"

Tim,

I wouldn't call that bad practice, It should actually be called good
practice (at least in my book). You are setting a variable and the ##
around the variable show that it is a variable, makes for easier reading.
Now, ## on the set side would be considered bad practice.

RE: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!

2002-05-09 Thread Timothy Heald

I made a mistake and forgot the scope. Also you should probably have
something to break it up so you can read it, like this:

#formField# = #evaluate('form' &formField)#

Also someone mentioned that the cfoutput wouldn't matter, well the loop does
need to be contained inside of an output for the server to process that
section of the template and write the variables.

RE: Problem with comparenocase vs "is" in CFIF

Thanks for all the help I know I would have gotten, but I figured it out.

Human error of course :-)
In my columnlist, I am doing a comma delimited list but to make it more
readable, I have a space in front of the values. In my default, I didn't
include the space. It only affected this page because the other pages have
the first value as the default sort.

Sorry,

Sudheer,

No, that should not make a difference.

Do you have debugging turned on? Look at at the FORM variables in the
debugging info. Make sure that AT LEAST ONE form variable is passed and it
is listed in the fieldnames variable.

If the page was called directly and not from a form submission you could get
that error because no FORM fields are defined.

Not sure if this is an error or just a bad practice, but you don't need the
# signs in your variable declaration (cfset)

works just fine. Also you don't need to generate that var at all you can
just do a list loop like this:

#formField# = #evaluate(formField)#

RE: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!

2002-05-09 Thread Timothy Heald

As long as you submit the form to that page you are good. if you try and
run the template directly then you will run into problems. Using FB 3 will
not cause a problem like this, but it would be best practices to use
attributes scoped variables for this, not form. The Fb 3 core files will
set all url and form variables into the attributes scope.

Tim,

I wouldn't call that bad practice, It should actually be called good
practice (at least in my book). You are setting a variable and the ##
around the variable show that it is a variable, makes for easier reading.
Now, ## on the set side would be considered bad practice.

Data From The Mainframe & Line Ending Codes

2002-05-09 Thread Gerry Pauline

CF-Pros:

I'm trying to deal with a file generated on our mainframe with CFFILE.
I'm using CFFILE to read the contents into a variable and then parse out
the contents; CFFILE seems to be working fine.

The code is pretty standard:

The problem occurs when I try to parse out the records. I'm using the
following code, which is also pretty standard:

#row#

A record looks like this:

01;003307198;LORE,IRENE SUSAN
;A;6;2907;2907;;;[EMAIL PROTECTED]
;  ;
;A;;3601245 ;MANAGEMENT;

This is only one record, and most likely will wrap around on your screen
(the record length is 216 characters).

It seems I don't have the correct codes to indicate the end of the
records. I've tried "chr(10)" and "chr(13)" separately, and in unison,
as in the above example.

Does anyone out there in CFExpertLand know what the correct line ending
code would be ?

Thank you.

OT: Using JS to intercept/prevent window close via the X button?

2002-05-09 Thread Shawn Grover

We have a situation where the user might hit the X button on a window to
close it. We need to prompt the user to save or abort the changes they've
made, and if save is selected but the data is not valid, cancel the close.
I suspect this is not quite possible, but have seen some things that
indicate it might be. I also think we might need to sacrifice some of this
functionality (i.e. if data is not valid, warn the user, but still close the
page...)

The following block of code DOES allow us to prevent closing the window, but
we are stuck with the MS implementation (developing for IE 5.5+) which shows
OK/Cancel buttons, and some extra text in the prompt. This breaks the look
and feel of our app (we have our own confirmation windows we pop up). Also,
it triggers the event if the page is only being reloaded.

MyFunction()

function MyFunction() {
event.returnvalue = "Are you sure?";
}

So, I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about this. I'm sure someone
has handled this before. Is there some way to do this with hidden frames?
Windows? Is it possible to only do this when a window is in fact being
closed, not reloaded? I think signed scripts might be required, but want to
avoid this if possible.

(if it helps any, our app has a main page, which opens up sub windows, some
modal, as required. These sub windows might open another sub window. But
it is typically the first sub window that we need this functionality on.
Point being, they might close a window, but not be leaving our application.)

TIA.

Shawn Grover

Well, that makes sense... the first row of the column is text (used for the
column name) that may be what is happening.

Can I make references to the default names of the excel columns when
importing? (sheet1A,sheet1B,sheet1C,etc.)

You may want to use a hex editor to determine the ASCII value of the line
character. Also, another option would to be to loop through all the
characters and do a ASC(Mid(string, position, 1)) to find unusual
characters. Or if you can find the length of the first row, simply find the
ASC of the character right after the end.

I think as long as it has something to do with CF and you don't let your
emotions carry you away, that debate is acceptable, but I haven't seen any

RE: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!

2002-05-09 Thread Kevin Schmidt

Extra pound signs are a pet peeve of mine as well. You don't need them.
If you ask me, adding pound signs is like adding an additional period,
not taking one away.

Am I setting my variable to the two words seperated by a period,

To each his own, but it makes more sense to me to see those pounds on

Re: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!

Regardless of what everyone thinks, it's slower to include the pounds because CF then
has to enumerate the variable's value rather than just referring to the variable
itself.

RE: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!

2002-05-09 Thread Chakka, Sudheer

Hi,

   That didn't solve my problem. It is not even recognising the
Form.FieldNames

#formField# = #evaluate('form' &formField)#

it is giving error in the first line of the above code.

Any more suggestions.

Thanks,

I think that the # on the right side of the set operand is redundant.

or

There is only one thing for *another_var* to be: a variable. If you wanted
my_var to hold the string "another_var" you should quote the right hand
side:

So my .02 is that pounds just clutter up your statement.

Tim,

I wouldn't call that bad practice, It should actually be called good
practice (at least in my book). You are setting a variable and the ##
around the variable show that it is a variable, makes for easier reading.
Now, ## on the set side would be considered bad practice.

Deanna,

I've made a few alterations to the highlight UDF which should work. It
basically uses recursion to call itself on each word of a comma delimitted

parameter, I was just lazy). I've done a few basic tests and it seems to
work, but no garauntees.

One thing you need to watch out for when highlighting multiple keywords is
that if you have any keyword which is a substring of another keyword, you
may not get the correct results. There are workarouds for this, but it's
probably a pretty unlikely occurance depending on what you are using the
highlight function for. If it becomes a problem, I can tell you how I've
dealt with it in the past.

Here's the modified UDF

function highLight(str, wordList) {

var front = "";
var back = "";
var matchCase = false;

//check for empty word list, this is the base condition for the recursion
if(ListLen(wordList) Lt 1)
return str;
else
word = ListFirst(wordList);

if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 3) front = arguments[3];
if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 4) back = arguments[4];
if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 5) matchCase = arguments[5];

if(Not matchCase)
CurTxt = REReplaceNoCase(str,"(#word#)","#front#\1#back#","ALL");
else
CurTxt = REReplace(str,"(#word#)","#front#\1#back#","ALL");

return Highlight(CurTxt, ListRest(wordList), front, back, matchCase);

}

Let me know if it works for you

on a more personal note; I don't know if you remember me but I used to work
for UWEX in Wisplan. Say hi to Eric and Greg for me if they're still kicking
around there.

Subject: udf help

Hi Folks,
I'm trying to modify Raymond Camden's highlight udf to allow for multiple
terms, and I'm not having a lot of luck. But, I've never written a udf,
so

Here's where I'm at so far, basically, my thinking is that I have to loop
over the regular expression for each term passed in, yes? But, it's not
working - doesn't throw an error, but doesn't highlight anything either.
(Yes, I realize that only the Not matchase part would loop right now...one
piece at a time.)

function highLight(str,word) {
 var front = "";
 var i = 0;
 var back = "";
 var matchCase = false;
 if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 3) front = arguments[3];
 if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 4) back = arguments[4];
 if(ArrayLen(arguments) GTE 5) matchCase = arguments[5];
 if(NOT matchCase)
 for(i=1; i lt listlen(word, " "); i = i + 1)
 return REReplaceNoCase(str,"#listgetat(word,i)#","#front#\1#back#","ALL");

 else return REReplace(str,"(#word#)","#front#\1#back#","ALL");

}

RE: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!

2002-05-09 Thread Craig Thomas

>>

Am I setting my variable to the two words seperated by a period,
query.column? or to a variable query.column?
<<

The first. If you wanted to set myVar to a variable query.column, don't use
quotes. (Either way, the period should be a _ or some such.)

SO,

myVar = the string "query_column"

sets the variable variables.myVar to some other variable, namely,
query_column if it exists and throws an error if it doesn't.

Re: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!

2002-05-09 Thread Matthew Walker

I vote for Reuben on this. I disagree with your argument. While you want
periods in a book. You. Don't. Want. Too. Many. Of. Them. People new to CF
often over use pound signs. So we are encouraged to learn when they're not
needed and then not use them. Thus Reuben's and my preference for not using
them when not needed. That doesn't mean it's the only right way, but it
certainly is one of them.

I don't understand your example:
It's obvious that you're setting your variable to the two words separated by
a period.

I also write things like and I think this is
easier to read (for me anyway) than .

cflocation showing headers

Ok, I'm seeing this problem now. After a cflocation, cf5 is outputting the
http headers to the screen.
I've seen other people mention it in the past, but can't recall what the fix
was.

Pound sign debate (from Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!)

2002-05-09 Thread Reuben Poon

Well, I don't think it is quite like leaving out a period. A period is a
required function to denote the closing of a sentence.

Pound signs are only required when a variable explicitly needs to be
evaluated. The rest of the time they are optional.

And your example:

is flawed because if the value of query.column holds a numeric value, it
will be converted to a string. The way the statement is structured, someone
reading that line would read that the intention of the statement is to
assign a STRING to the variable my_var. If the variable query.column holds
a numeric value then this statement is misleading and incorrect. Because
Cold Fusion is untyped, this USUALLY does not pose problems but it could
potentially cause problems.

And as for your other example:

This statement puts the STRING "query.column" into the variable my_var. You
are not getting the value of the query.column variable.

I understand your point, but it is like saying periods clutter up pages in a
book.

If you have:

Am I setting my variable to the two words seperated by a period,
query.column? or to a variable query.column?

To each his own, but it makes more sense to me to see those pounds on the
right hand side .. Plus reading a book with periods is easier too :)

Sudheer,

For future reference. The caching problem created an error probably because
the FORM variables were not defined.

pound signs and strings (WAS: Form.FIELDNAME - error!!!!)

---

I missed the start of this thread, but this seems like a small but
important tangent to get straight...

Doesn't the second CFSET set the variable to the string "query.column"?
I imagine the real debate is between:

and

If we're pitching in, I usually prefer the second if your only using
that variable. Studio colour coding means it's easy to see you're
referring to a variable... If you're concatenating, though I find it
easier to use

rather than

Again, colour coding makes the first one easier to scan.

Signing out on the "CF nit-picking" debate :-)

RE: Getting data from excel97

You should be able to change a setting to make the first row denote the
column names.

For the references to the default names, I am not sure about that (or
exactlly what you're trying to do).

Well, that makes sense... the first row of the column is text (used for the
column name) that may be what is happening.

Can I make references to the default names of the excel columns when
importing? (sheet1A,sheet1B,sheet1C,etc.)
