VB and CF

2002-09-04 Thread Kodjo Ackah

I use CFStudio at the moment, I need to branch into VB for a project.
I am not certain but, can I just download VB 6 install it on my PC and
work away
or is there any specifics with doing this that I need to know?
Also, there is no application server(I mean Coldfusion server) installed
on my PC.
Do I have to uninstall CFStudio before installing VB?

RE: VB and CF

2002-09-04 Thread John Beynon

VB is for creating desktop/server apps - it's not a webserver product or any
such like. You create the VB project, compile the code and run the .exe
file. Unless you're getting confused with VBScript? You can quite happily
install Visual Studio and keep CFStudio on the same machine.

CFExecute will work in the context of the user account that the CF Service is running
under. More likely the SYSTEM account, if you haven't configured CF to run under a
particular account. Which could be an idea -- try configuring a particular account
and have CF run under that account.

Can't insert into SQL server 2000 database & extract data from db with cirillic characters

2002-09-04 Thread DmitryM

Have a problem inserting and extracting cirillic (russian) characters into SQL Server
database or extracting it from the database.

All pages written in CFMX and data inserted into table enetered through this pages,
but all characters unreadable.

Connect to data source through ODBC Socket (culdn't create DSN as SQL Server in CFMX
Admin).

On CFMX Server debug mode is active, so I can see all vars posted to the database and
I see all this unreadable characters instead of russian letters.

Joe,

When using stored procs, a lot depends on what you are doing inside of it -
and just like CF code, it has to be optimized for performance. Also, using
will give you the same benefits as , so it
should be used (where possible) instead of directly calling the proc between
to query tags. Finally, there are things you can do with an SP that you
cannot do (as easily) with CF code - nor should you try. Building and
delivering a temporary table for example Anything that requires a very
complex execution plan on the server will be a good candidate for an SP.

I knew there were reasons I had avoided using prior to
ColdFusion MX ...

So with the advent of MX and not wanting to force my clients / customers to
use the odbc bridge drivers, I decided to convert all of my "exec sp_myproc"
syntax in tags to tags and after pounding my head
for about an hour trying to figure out why a given procedure didn't work, I
came accross 1 ( count them, ONE ) obscure reference on an obscure forum
that mentions that the order of the tags must be the same as
the order of the parameters as defined in the stored procedure.

Also, although the documentation for says the attribute
null="" takes a boolean, yes/no value, it does not -- it takes no value and
passes null regardless of any value given.

Does anyone know if either or both of these are still true in CFMX?

Or if either of them are MSSQL specific and if so why?

Not that it will matter much if I hope to continue to support CF5, but it's
really annoying and frustrating to have to do this all the time:

Instead of simply using either a statement (and allowing the
procedure to use a default value) OR a null attribute, ie:

Re: and CF MX

2002-09-04 Thread Joe Eugene

Deanna,
You can use a Call Statement like below...cant find the
link..Microsoft had some doc somewhere(msdn) as
as to "Call" runs/scales better than Exec for SQL Server
   CALL for MS SQL Server

{Call ProcedureName(value1, value2, value 3)

Exec For MS SQL server (You specify the @input parameters)

Exec ProcedureName @InParam1=value1,@InParam=value2

From my Experience, the above 2 ways run faster than
. The only downside is
you cannot capture multiple RecordSets from the Procedure..
using a CALL or EXEC
Mutiple RecordSets : You are returning more than one (Select *
from TableName) from the SP.
I would still use (CALL/EXEC) for upto 2 RecordSets and call the
procedure twice.. rather than
 ...reason.. CALL is still faster.
If you have 3-5... small recordSets returned back from the SP...
you should probably use
or (CALL..)write the Procedure to Join the recordSets and return
one ResultSet.

Hope this helps

Joe

The MS IDE has some merit since it will expand object constructs good in
the early stages.

You of course will need an IIS web server to run your stuff.

I now usually use CF5 studio ( basically Homesite) for my ASP coding.

Here is a site I have found invaluable for ASP/ADO and more..
http://www.devguru.com/ This site has complete indexes and reference on
ASP, ADO, VBScript and more

Subject: VB and CF

I use CFStudio at the moment, I need to branch into VB for a project.
I am not certain but, can I just download VB 6 install it on my PC and
work away
or is there any specifics with doing this that I need to know?
Also, there is no application server(I mean Coldfusion server) installed
on my PC.
Do I have to uninstall CFStudio before installing VB?

Re: Where is javac?

2002-09-04 Thread Joe Eugene

Jesse,
I tried to find javac.exe as well how does CFMX compile the
*.cfm or *.jsp pages then?
Does Jrun.exe do this? can you please explain.. how CFMX compiles
the pages?
I have installed J2SE JDK 1.4.0.. will this ever conflict with CFMX
Server/Jrun setting?

Thanks
Joe

Aargh! Nevermind. It was a problem with the READONLY attribute on the file.

How do I change the RASH attributes on a file with CF? (I don't mess with

Re: and CF MX

2002-09-04 Thread Kreig Zimmerman

Well, it works for me. I'd just check your code out. That was
production-level code I used as an example, so I'm 110% certain it works.

As for your comments... yeah it's stupid. But without knowing exactly
what CFSTOREDPROC does, what's to say?

At any rate, I avoid that issue with abstraction--CFMX style. The
StoredProc is wrapped in a CFFUNCTION. Any calls from my own code, it's
a simple CFSCRIPT, e.g.:

  thoseQueries.GetStuff(id=12, bid=226)

What's the point of complaining about most CF limitations... anyone
who's worked on any major software knows all the compromises that must
go into any project. Maybe the guy who originally coded that
fucntionality left half-way through his job for a dotcom of the time,
and they never finished implementing it. Maybe he got lost halfway
through building it. Maybe the piece was EOL'd.

As it is, I'm convinced CFQUERYPARAM was a kludge of its own, which
"borrowed" CFPROCPARAM in order to solve the long column data insert
issues in Oracle pre-4.5.

The fully implemented version of CFQUERYPARAM since 5.0 has thus blurred
the boundaries between CFQUERY and CFSTOREDPROC.

Let's not forget that CFQUERY is probably doing a lot more than it was
initially intended to do in CF's "design".

Re: eCommerce - shopping carts - Your Opinion.

2002-09-04 Thread Cozmo

Having written several carts from scratch I can attest to the amount of
time and effort it takes. I tried using cfwebstore about 1 1/2 years
ago. It is a very solid product with a lot of features, and comes
complete with source code. However, it was not up to our standards in
terms of user interface. i.e. it is not all that pretty in terms of
design, and fonts, lay out etc.(mostly on the back end admin area) (we
are VERY picky in that respect).

It does cover a lot of ground with respect to the range of products it
can accommodate, price points, discounts, specials, shipping etc. In
that respect I would highly recommend it.

Things to consider are code reuse, extendibility, dovetailing the cart
with the rest of the site, and being knee deep in someone else's code.
If you foresee the need of having future clients needing a cart, or
simply being able to offer one in the future, or having a large number
of "special items" with a lot of variables associated with those items
(multiple colors, sizes, price points, engraving, etc), I would
recommend writing one from scratch.

Though it might not be in the client's budget, you may find that it
would be cost efficient to develop a cart as a product you can offer in
the future. We have gotten a LOT of mileage from our carts. Once it was
written it was used over and over again. And since we developed it, it
is much easier to add new features and/or accommodate special products.

My experience with cfwebstore was that it was very time consuming to add
new features and extending it to accommodate special products. And you
KNOW that you will end up having to modify the cart for future clients ;).

If all you need is a cart for one item with one size, one color and one
price, I would go with cfwebstore. However, if you want to have one that
is easily extendable and plan to offer it in the future I would
recommend writing it from scratch.

Coz

CF & ASP - Side by Side?

2002-09-04 Thread Jeff D. Chastain

I have a large content management system designed in Cold Fusion that
implements user security based on an LDAP server and a set of client
variables. I am needing to drop an old legacy ASP app in next to it and
have the users be able to move seamlessly between the two. The problem is
that the ASP app is secured using NT authentication - i.e. CGI.REMOTE_USER.

Does anybody know of a way I can easily (without re-writing it) get the ASP
application to recognize/read the client login variables from the Cold
Fusion app?

Thanks

If you are using NT Authentication(Challenge Reponse)... CGI.AuthUser gets
populated
and treats the user as Authenticated User.. This variable(CGI.AuthUser) is
available
both in CF and ASP.. so u shouldnt have any problems, authenticating the

RE: CF & ASP - Side by Side?

2002-09-04 Thread Michael Kear

I'm doing that right now, in the opposite direction. Our users are
validated and granted access in our .asp shop, and we have to allow entry to
the coldfusion parts of the site if they have access to the .asp parts.

What we're doing is this, and something similar will probably work for you
in reverse:

The user gets validated at the shop, and then is diverted by the shop to the
main content part of the site (also .asp based) where it sets up .asp
session variables. So we're adding a line in the .asp code to divert them
instead to a coldfusion page which only sets up client vars in CF, then
passes them on to wherever they were being sent by the .asp shop.Later
when they come to the coldfusion part of the site, there is already a CF
session going and they can be validated that way.

This means the user has 3 sessions - one at the shop where they buy access
(or provide login details), one in the .asp content part, and one in the
coldfusion part.

This isn't code you can use, but perhaps it'll help you figure out how to do
it. We looked at ways to store the .asp session vars in the database or
making the user provide login details again or maybe just biting the bullet
and making all the coldfusion part of the site open and free to everyone.
In the end we figured all we needed to know at the coldfusion stage was
whether the user was allowed access. We didn't need to know their name and
other details, for this application, so we just look for a single digit in
the url when the user is diverted to the coldfusion part, plus a little
error checking to make sure someone can't spoof that url and that's all we
need in a few lines of code that adds only milliseconds to the processing of
the access control.

Subject: CF & ASP - Side by Side?

I have a large content management system designed in Cold Fusion that
implements user security based on an LDAP server and a set of client
variables. I am needing to drop an old legacy ASP app in next to it and
have the users be able to move seamlessly between the two. The problem is
that the ASP app is secured using NT authentication - i.e. CGI.REMOTE_USER.

Does anybody know of a way I can easily (without re-writing it) get the ASP
application to recognize/read the client login variables from the Cold
Fusion app?

Thanks

Jikesw is used to compile everything internally UNLESS you do not have jikesw, at
which point it utilizes the local JAVA_HOME define compiler.

This is not the key to your webservices.

Re: SQL Server Export

2002-09-04 Thread Bryan Stevenson

You have to make sure you don't select the default option of just copying
the tables and data during the DTS process. There is a screen with 2 or 3
options (after you've selected source, destination, and the tables I think).
Make sure you select the option that mentions copying all objects etc.

Sorry to be a tad vague...it's been awhile ;-)

I think you can avoid the proxy server issues by adding a random url var.
Then it thinks it's a different page. Maybe like
index.cfm?r=#getTickCount()# or such.  DRE

Seen plenty of things like that caused by the user's proxy server. Novell's
old proxy server (the name escapes me at the moment) was notorious for that.

Also seen it in cases where the user had ghosted one machine to the other.
They ended up sharing temporary internet files and, thus, cookies. Clearing
the temporary internet files or at least the CFID and CFTOKEN cookies for
the domain fixed the problem.

RE: SQL Server Export

2002-09-04 Thread Dharmesh Goel

Instead of selecting - 'Copy tables and views from source', choose 'copy
objects and data'. You will have more control over what objects are to be
copied. This way your default values as well as primary key designations
will also get copied. Be careful though; with this method, it is quite
possible to copy various objects that are not needed and also drop similarly
named objects in your destination database.

CFQueryParam, Inserts and NoCount

2002-09-04 Thread Brook Davies

I've been using the SQL NOCOUNT and Select @@identity to retrieve the ID of
newly inserted rows. I recently (after the talk on this list yesterday -re:
sql injection attacks) decided to update these inserts to use
. But it appears as though does not support
the use of the NOCOUNT declaration. I get an error that reads:

" Could not find prepared statement with handle -1. "

Does this mean it is not possible to use the NOCOUNT feature to return the
newly inserted ID?

Also, is performance improved on an Insert operation? Is it worth
considering adding another query to retrieve the recordID separately so
that can be used? Would this be a major performance hit? The
insert operation is used extensively and could be the target of a hack
attempt, which is why I tried to use the format. I'm not
sure now if I should go back to the regular insert where I can retrieve the
ID and do the insert all in one query, or implement the query using
' and a second query to get the ID. Any suggestions are
appreciated, thanks :)

Brook

Re: extra lines in html output

2002-09-04 Thread Paul Giesenhagen

The whitespace is the CF code stripped out and whitespace left in it's place
..

There are a number of custom tags that are in the Developers Gallery that do
this, you can turn off whitespace in CFADMIN (but that is not the best). Or
you can roll your own custom tag, here is some code that works pretty well
to wrap around Non-output stuff.

Create a file called something like: clearspace.cfm

Put this in it:

The wrap your non-output cf code like this:

... CF code

It removes the whitespace...

Here's what I do. I use the SQL script generator to build a script with all
my indexes constraints and defaults in it. I use it to create everything

import the data, then I run the "constraints" portion of the script. It
sounds like a lot of work, but it's really not - the script generator makes

CFX Custom tags in Visual C++.net

2002-09-04 Thread Robert Polickoski

Hello all,

I am running CFMX on WindowsXP Pro using the CF built in web server.

I have a problem with label formatting in a chart. I am trying to produce a Gantt
Chart. I want my Y axis labels to be dates within a specified range. I have set them
to the range and the labelformat attribute to date, but all the labels show up as
12/31/69. I have tried adding an offset thinking it was an epoch date issue without
any difference in result. When I switch the labelformat to number, the values are
valid date serial values. How do I get dates to show up as Y Axis labels?

The pertinent portion of the code follows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Invoking a CFC - overhead

2002-09-04 Thread Brook Davies

I have a CFC, and I have been watching the time it takes to invoke it and
process it. It seems a little strange. I have the code wrapped in a timer
and I am outputting the processing time. Inside the CFC from top to bottom
the total time is 0-10 milliseconds. The timer that is wrapped around the
portion on the calling template reports between 40-100 milliseconds.

Is this right? Is there that much overhead involved in invoking a CFC? What
would cause this increase in processing time? I have tried initializing the
CFC and storing it in the application scope and calling it by its handle
without much increase in speed.

Brook

You need the .NET runtimes and associated files to compile it successfully.
If you shoot me the code, I can compile it for you.

what in particular is needed (if it's possible) to construct custom tags in

Thanks for the offer, right now I was reduced to compiling the tag at home

ColdFusion MX, or CFMX, is the next release of ColdFusion which brings
much, much more to the table than just new CF features. Driven by
Macromedia's drive to create an entirely new set of web application
development tools (linking Flash, DreamWeaver, and more), it also
brings to CFers the tools needed to take part in the latest
development trends, including XML, web services, .NET and J2EE
integration, and lots more.

In fact, there's really a lot more to CF than just those things. Sure,
you may have heard about the ColdFusion component (CFC) capability, as
well as the new graphing capabilities, etc. But did you know that
there's really quite a bit more to CFMX than those top features that
are marketed so heavily?

If you attended my seminar of a similar name and focus about CF 5, you
know that we identified lots of things that you didn't hear as much
about and that indeed you might not have easily found on your own.
This seminar follows the same format, exploring the less popular but
often more powerful and productive new features of CFMX. Of course,
we'll also briefly highlight those most popular and well-discussed
features as well.

As a bonus, there are many features you can leverage in CFMX that
aren't discussed in any CFMX documentation, because they're really
features of the underlying J2EE infrastructure. We'll point those out
as well. Cool stuff!

Partial List of Topics:

The big-name features: Components (CFCs), Flash integration, XML
and web services support, .Net
 integration new, charting features
  Understanding them, leveraging them
 Understanding the J2EE integration
Leveraging it in your CF code
Leveraging integration with JSP and servlets

 Migrating your code to CFMX
 New debugging capabilities

OT: CF-related software wish list

Hi, everyone. My manager has asked me to put together a list of potential
software purchases for the next year. I am a rather new ColdFusion

far, I have only come up with Visual SourceSafe and some sort of HTMLEditing
CF tag. Are there other pieces of software that I should evaluate?
Anything that you all find indispensable, that aids in coding, etc.?

Thanks,

Re: OT: CF-related software wish list

2002-09-04 Thread Brook Davies

If you are doing any amount of email delivery (and who isn't these days) in
combination with CF the infusion mailserver products are very cool. Well
priced, stable and reliable and they have great integration with CF. If you
ever need to build any kind of intelligent email delivery system, the IMS
mailservers are great.

The IMS server (a service on windows) is very stable and capable of
delivery large amounts of email. Delivery failures and bounces are reported
to a CF template of your choice which makes it easy to process bounces,
unsubscribes etc.

Anyways, I tried a couple other tools, and mailservers an none had the
support or integration with CF that IMS does ;)

Mail Server Question

2002-09-04 Thread Wanda Hubbard

The mail server name had to be changed and since that time SOME of our email
is getting an error. I say SOME because when we create the order from
inside the company the confirming email response goes through fine but when
someone creates an order outside the company the confirming email response
errors on our side with a message: Delivery failed 20 attempts:.

CF Administrator is set using the IP address so the name change did not
cause a problem there. If the CF administrator is set to an IP address then
as far as I know this is a server issue not a coding or CF issue Am I
right and if so, does anyone have any ideas they can share about where to
look for the problem.

Thanks

inside the company the confirming email response goes through fine but when
someone creates an order outside the company the confirming email response
errors on our side with a message: Delivery failed 20 attempts:.

CF Administrator is set using the IP address so the name change did not
cause a problem there. If the CF administrator is set to an IP address then
as far as I know this is a server issue not a coding or CF issue Am I
right and if so, does anyone have any ideas they can share about where to
look for the problem.

Thanks

Re: OT: CF-related software wish list

2002-09-04 Thread Jerry Johnson

As a standard set of development tools, I always include Winzip, NAV, a binary editor
(UltraEdit), a screen capture utility (html2jpg), a graphics package (Fireworks or
Photoshop), a flowcharting tool (Visio works fine), a standard office suite, a link
checker (Linkbot), an FTP program (FTP Voyager), if I am lucky, a UNIX shell (MKS),
pdf tools (Acrobat, Ghostscript). Java compiler and editor (to avoid a religious war,
I won;t recommend one :). Lately an XML editor (XML Spy).

On top of that, any code you can buy or steal will do you well.

As for specifically CF stuff:
I've got the SiteObjects HTML editor and love it.
The iMS system looks great (although we rolled our own, here).
PDF conversion tools can always find a use.

CF Studio Tag Formatting

2002-09-04 Thread Bob Haroche

Sorry if this is the wrong list for this question. I've subscribed to
the CF Studio list but never get any emails from that one.

Here's the question: I want my CF tags to all be uppercase, while all
my HTML tags to all be lowercase. How is this best achieved in CF
Studio 4.52? I've played with code sweeper and other options but there
doesn't appear to be an easy way to configure this.

Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend ActivEdit as your editing tool. Installation is as easy

extensible api is very cool. I haven't had time to play with its java

The mail server is rejecting relays, more than likely. You need to make sure that the
mail server allows relaying from
the IP address of your ColdFusion Server.

Re: cfmail verification

2002-09-04 Thread Bruce Sorge

When you are entering the informatino into the CFADMIN, there is a box that you can
check to check the connection. Check that box and you will get a connection
verification. As far as whether or not the email sent, if not then it get put into the
Undelivr folder. There are other ways of telling if the email sent, and there was a
rather lengthy thread about a week or so. Do a search in the archives for CFMAIL and I
am sure you will come accross that thread.

2002-09-04 Thread Howie Hamlin

No, basically CFMAIL attempts to pass the mail off to the mail server and, if
unsuccessful, the mail is moved to the
UNDELIVR folder. If you need to verify that mail is being sent and also handle
bounces and have other advanced features
then I invite you to evaluate iMS. iMS is the mail delivery engine behind these email
lists.

Ah! ... OK, so I use cfset then... I did intend to manage a ('private')
property with set and get methods as you suggested...

My tests of using cfset in the 'this' scope have failed to get
persistence btween calls to remote methods. For example, I 1)
initilialize this.lasterror before any function tag 'declarations', 2)
change the value in one method, which also puts the proof into cflog, 3)
then call another method (using the same line of code) blotto! The
value gets re-initialized just b4 the second method call...

I just read Forta's latest article on CFC's CF Dev Journal and it leads
me to b'leave that the only way to persist variables btwn method calls
is to store the object in a scope that the CF architecture already
defines as persistent, like session or client or application. So you use
syntax then attach it to client or something.

Thanks for the response... I'll briefly summarize the results of my
suffering later...hook or crook

CF source code is executed on the server, and 'converted' into HTML before
being sent to the client. So CF code (any server side code, such as ASP,
PHP, JSP, etc) is effectively hidden.

Problems with CFMAIL and exclamation points

2002-09-04 Thread Ryan Youngman

Has anyone ever had problems when the content within a CFMAIL tag is too
long, it puts exclamation points in the processed content? I'm having this
problem where a paragraph looks fine on my browser, but when I take that
exact same content and put in between my CFMAIL tags, an exclamation point
shows up on my email. Anyone ever heard of this?

Thanks,
Ryan

RE: OT: CF-related software wish list

2002-09-04 Thread Bartee Lamar

http://www.techsmith.com/ Snag-it A great little screen capture
program.

If you really want to get a high budget item get ERWin or one of the
other ERD database design programs/environments. These get pricy,
starting at about $3,000

As a standard set of development tools, I always include Winzip, NAV, a
binary editor (UltraEdit), a screen capture utility (html2jpg), a
graphics package (Fireworks or Photoshop), a flowcharting tool (Visio
works fine), a standard office suite, a link checker (Linkbot), an FTP
program (FTP Voyager), if I am lucky, a UNIX shell (MKS), pdf tools
(Acrobat, Ghostscript). Java compiler and editor (to avoid a religious
war, I won;t recommend one :).

Hi, everyone. My manager has asked me to put together a list of
potential
software purchases for the next year. I am a rather new ColdFusion
developer, so I don't really know much in terms of CF-related software.
So
far, I have only come up with Visual SourceSafe and some sort of
HTMLEditing
CF tag. Are there other pieces of software that I should evaluate?
Anything that you all find indispensable, that aids in coding, etc.?

Thanks,
Matthieu

RE: Hiding Source Code

2002-09-04 Thread Everett, Al

How would the browser render it then? A browser just takes specially
formatted plain text and formats it. There are some methods to mask HTML,
usually involving JavaScript, but they're certainly not really secure.

Why would you want to?

RE: Mail Server Problem

2002-09-04 Thread James Ang

I think it is a pcode cache issue. When the pcode for the CFM is
compiled, the CFMAIL's server settings are EXPLICITLY CODED into the
pcode. Like Howie suggested, look at the rejected cfmail files in the
UNDELIVR folder, they should have the OLD mail server settings.

To solve this problem, you need to restart the ColdFusion Application
service to reliably flush the pcode cache.

Relay is turned on for Local Host only. It was working fine prior to
the
server name change but we are still only using the IP address. Any
other
ideas are reference points?

Nope.

*something* has to be sent to the client in order for the browser to render
it. people have been looking for ways to hide html and javascript forever
(as well as ways to prevent people from 'borrowing' their images).

If the browser is displaying it...the code is on the user's machine.
