Are you using a flat panel monitor? I get a similar problem where the
closing double-quote looks like a single-quote. I've just learned to live
with it.

No need to say it's a bug (yes, MM is aware of it). I can't remember every
detail but I think it happens just on XP and it goes away if you change one
setting relazed to text/font anti-alias or rendering... Sorry if I can't
provide a more specific explanation, I use win 2000 everywhere and I am
aware of it only because a few friends reported the bug.

Subject: OT: Dreamweaver and include files

I'm just knocking together a basic PHP-based site for a friend/client,
just
using PHP to do includes to ease maintenance. Thing is, they're into
Dreamweaver (and I'm not!) and think that sometime in the future they
might
want to maintain the site in Dreamweaver.

Can Dreamweaver deal with PHP code in this way? Say every page on the
site
includes a header and footer at the top and bottom, would Dreamweaver be

able to understand this and allow editing? I could easily convert the
site
at any point to flat HTML files for easy DW editing I guess, I'm just
curious to know if DW can do this with PHP (or CF for that matter).

If it can do it, which version?

thanks,

(Admin) Locking down the community

2003-08-18 Thread Michael Dinowitz
I just had someone do a DoS attack on HoF because they were trying to scan the
community section of the site and grab email addresses. The good news is that
they failed. The bad news is that they tried a few thousand times and slowed the
machine down quite a bit.
For this reason, I'm going to make the community section (where the community
members post their pics and such) accessible only to those who are both signed
up to the site and logged in. In addition, I'm going to automatically 'hide'
everyone's email address in that section along the lines of this article:
http://www.fusionauthority.com/alert/index.cfm?alertid=121#tags5
These are quick and easy fixes to the problem. A more complete fix will be
investigated and put into effect in time.

I have the images displaying perfectly one image wide.
It's the space between the images above and below I am trying to

I have alot of cfif, cfelesif, cfswitch code running between the

perfectly, it's just it becomes impossible to edit, read that's all.

Yes, it does. You have to ensure that the include is the only thing in
your PHP directive tho':

That will not work but the following will work:

And you also have to enable:

I just tested it in DWMX. I don't know whether DW4 supported that.

It's true, I'll be attending the Fusebox conference with one of my
colleagues, mostly for the Mach II material, although I am interested
in learning more about Fusebox 4.

My team will be using Mach II for some new projects that are just

applications to use Mach II (in CF).

Pardon the self-promotion, but I wanted to announce that my latest book,
Programming ColdFusion MX, 2nd Edition has been released. It's worth
noting that this is the only book on the market that covers ColdFusion
MX 6.1.

If I was fortunate enough to have you as a reader of the first edition
of this book (Programming ColdFusion), you'll be interested to know that
the second edition has been completely revised and updated for
ColdFusion MX 6.1. Just about every chapter has been rewritten, several
of them completely. Many of the changes are the direct result of reader
feedback. Four new chapters were added to deal with totally new topics
introduced in ColdFusion MX. Additionally, the majority of examples used
throughout the book have also been rewritten to reflect new and improved
coding techniques and practices. It's worth noting that many of the
changes to ColdFusion from Version 5 to MX are significant and simple to
spot, while others are subtle and easy to overlook. Wherever possible, I
try to point out the differences between the two versions.

You can learn more about the book (including a sample chapter in PDF)
from O'Reilly's web site: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/coldfusion2/

RE: real simple syndication (rss)

2003-08-18 Thread Roger B.
Isaac,

Unless you've an RDF fan, all you need is at:

http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss

That's also the first hit on Google for "RSS", so it's pretty easy to find.

If you *do* love RDF, then you need to look at:

http://web.resource.org/rss/1.0/

To find out what's wrong with your feed (no matter what version), run it
through a validator:

http://feeds.archive.org/validator/

> And what I've found is that, although there seems to be a "work group" for
RSS,
> the vast majority of RSS information on the web is found in unnoficial
(looking ?)
> sites...

Netscape abandoned RSS many years ago, so there is no official home for
it... in the meantime, several competing groups have laid claim to the name.
All you need to figure out is if you want to do straight XML or RDF/XML and
proceed accordingly.

Fusebox conference news and Mach II update

2003-08-18 Thread Michael Smith
The Fusebox conference is in just two weeks! See http://www.cfconf.org/fusebox2003/
for details.

I have some conference news. Below are more details on "Mach-II Monday".
Secondly we have two important guests at the conference - Sean Corfield of
Macromedia and Stan Cox of Cox Designs. I think the fact that Macromedia
is sending staff to the conference underlines the importance of this
release of Fusebox. And I am hoping that Stan will help lighten up the
proceedings!

Third there will be a Fuseball event and cash bar Saturday night at the
conference hotel - so exercise your wrists and sharpen your Fuseball skills
to win!

Mach-II Monday
--
On Monday morning, Hal Helms and Ben Edwards will talk about Mach-II,
the new framework that leverages that leverages the new features and
improvements of version 6.1's CFCs. We'll start by answering some
pertinent questions: What is Mach-II? What happened to Fusebox MX? Does
Mach-II compete with Fusebox 4? Next, we'll talk about how different
architectures try to achieve different goals. Mach-II's primary goal is
to create an object oriented framework that will ease the job of
software maintenance. We'll see how an "implicit invocation" (the "II"
in Mach-II) architecture can aid in building maintainable code that can
evolve along with the application's requirements. Fine you say, but you

DRK3 includes CF code/examples for RSS reader and a feed generator.

O'Reilly book - "Content Syndication with RSS" by Ben Hammersley is pretty
good with many examples. Covers various "standards" well.

poorly written documents which don't really explain it, FAQ's that don't

http://blogspace.com/rss/ and hit the first link at the top that says
"Content Syndication with XML and RSS weblog"). The only xml schemas I've
been able to find for rss (though xsd is _the_ standard for defining xml
dialects like rss) were not only written in an old version of xsd, but also
didn't validate as a result of using elements that didn't exist in the xsd

You could probably use the TCPMonitor utility included with CF as well

Re: Integrating ColdFusion with ACT!

2003-08-18 Thread Jeffry Houser
ACT! doesn't inherently support ODBC (unless I'm completely missing
something).
Based on my research, the ODBC drivers for ACT! (provided by a 3rd party
developer) cost about twice as much as I paid for ACT!.

Realistically writing a CFX custom tag for it may not be cheaper
(depending on if you bill me out as a musician or as a programmer) but it
might look good on a resume and it sure would make it a lot easier for me
to sync up the web database for my band with the ACT! database we use for
booking and mailings.

It seems like ACT Intergrates with a Few DeskTop DB's...
Why CFX Custom tags, if there is Standard Enterprise DB involved,
why not use JDBC?

Integrating ColdFusion with ACT!

2003-08-18 Thread Jeffry Houser
Hi All,

I've been reading through the ACT! SDK documentation, and it seems
feasible to be able to write a CFX custom tag to read and write data from
the ACT! database tables. Has anyone done this? Is there an existent tag
out there?

The principles I spoke of in my post still apply, but CFLOCKs with
SCOPE="Session" only "key" to the one user's session now. Named locks on
code that access the Server or Application scopes, or that try to safeguard
non-threadsafe CFX tags by single-threading access to them via named
exclusive locks, still work according to what I said earlier.

ISP Control Panel apps...

2003-08-18 Thread kevin
Hey all-

I'm looking for a ColdFusion solution control panel application for a
small ISP client. Anyone have any suggestions? Even a solid
framework to start from would be helpful.

Also, I'm looking for (for the same client) apps (COM objects?) which
will allow me to make/edit entries in the Windows DNS server and IIS
Manager (or one app/COM object that does both. I've found the ASPDNS
project on SourceForge, and that might be something I can use after
rewriting the ASP in ColdFusion, but that just makes changes in the
DNS server.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Kev

Display CFSET Vars

Hmm I'm not sure if it's possible to look at EVERYTHING in one shot. To get all your
variables in the local scope, try (built-in CFML tag) or
maybe . The first and possibly the second snippet I just
wrote will probably only work in CFMX because it requires the variables scope to be
referenceable as a structure.

If you want even more than that, you can try my cf_debug tag I wrote. It has two
optional attributes called dumpvars and dumpscopes; for each you can specify a
comma-delimited list of variables and scopes to output. Something might show just about
every variable you would want to see.

cf_debug makes sure shared-scope variables access is locked. It also displays
execution time and allows you to write basic debug information to a
log. Contact me off-list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) if you would like a copy.

RE: Removing extra space between images

2003-08-18 Thread Ian Skinner
Unfortunately that is what you need to do as any white space used to make
your code more readable, will translate into at least one single white space
character between each image.

If you would rather use a lot of 's you could try something like
this at the top of the page.

Now you have to put a set around everything you want
sent to the client. Something like this:

This template should ignore any white space outside of the output tags. Be
careful about not improperly nesting the output tags, this is untested and
unproven, but HTH.

Personally I find all the extra footpaths more trouble then the line of code
all jammed together, but to each his own.

Nope. However, if you need this ability, simply place all your variables
in a structure, like myData, or local, or whatever. Then you can
inspect/dump/etc.

MX61 admin password problem

2003-08-18 Thread Moneymaker, Jon S CONT (WPNSTA Yorktown)
Hello all
got a problem...
just installed CFMX61 on a NT4.0 (fully patched) server (IIS4) and during
the install I entered an admin password, finished the configuration (no
problems yet) and then later, attempted to re-enter the config pagethe
password repeatedly is refused as being incorrect. I double checked all the
obvious things (caps lock etc)but no luck.
checked around some for help on cf-talk and found that I had to modify the
neo-security.xml file to get indid that, was able to get in
THEN, I tried to change/modify the password but no luckthe changes fail
and the page continues to say the PW is incorrect.
tried stopping/restarting CF
No luck...

I looked into the registry too
but there doesn't seem to be a readily obvious place where the password is
stored

Help?

You're still misunderstanding: the documentation specifically
acknowledges multiple threads but my point is that if you have:

...

then all requests that run this particular piece of code will be
single-threaded through the cflock tag. And that's exactly what the
documentation says.

> a) two instances of the same thread - cflock works as described

You're mixing your words now. Threads are unique so you can't have two
instances of the "same" thread. You can have two separate, distinct
threads that are both running the same CF page - it's the *code* that
is the same, not the threads.

Yeap, positive. First thing I did was check for that and set debug on to
see what the path of the custom tag it was pulling it. The path it was
reporting was the old location of the tag and was deleted.

We did figure out the problem though .. Apparently the auto-updater can
cause problems with compiled CFMs. If you clear out WEB-INF/cfclasses, mx
recompiles everything. We did this and it worked fine.

Yes, very much so.

I wish I had more time in the book to cover locking, but we were already WAY
over page count with the publisher (1206 pages!), and the pins they were
sticking in the "Adam Mojo" voodoo doll were beginning to hurt.

We spend about an hour and a half on just locking in our ColdFusion MX
Master Class because of the confusion surrounding this topic, and we show
live examples of code running and contending with various locks under
various conditions to give a feel for exactly what is happening and why. We
also go over reengineering your code to make use of unlocked Write-Once
Constants and components persisted in the Application scope, when it's
appropriate, and when it's not.

About the named locks as opposed to shared locks: Remember that you're
synchronizing the execution of the code within the CFLOCK paired tag, and
that either the value of SCOPE or the value of NAME is used as the "key"
that tells ColdFusion "any code that matches this key must be synchronized
according to the specified rules of their surrounding CFLOCKs." So if two
simultaneously-executing pages have CFLOCKed code using the same "key" and
access the same shared resource, they will be synchronized against one
another (and all other code executing that CFLOCKs with that same "key").

Think of a SCOPE lock as being kind of like a NAME lock uses the name of the
scope as its value, so that lots and lots of code uses the same
synchronization "key," then imagine how much more locking contention you are
likely to have under load. Using a more granular value for NAME
statistically lowers the probability of locking contention under load
because (if you manage the naming of your locks correctly) fewer blocks of
code with be synchronizing against the same "key."

That being said, you run a risk with named locks because they can become
"greedy," in that any access to shared resources or shared memory scopes
within a named lock means that any other code accessing those same shared
resources or shared memory scope must also use the same name for their
CFLOCK tags, or else they will not be synchronized and you've just ruined
your locking scheme. Greed can sometimes be avoided by reengineering code
so that you lock fewer things under the same CFLOCK tag. I create a
"locking matrix chart" to organize my locks against the shared resources
they synchronize, but it's worth it in the long run.

RE: ambiguous

2003-08-18 Thread Janine Jakim
Try not to use *, especially on multiple tables. And you need to link in
your customers table somehow or you'll have a complete mess...

Do something like

SELECT Lastname, firstname, c.customerid, o.orderid, b.booktitle
FROM customers c inner join orders o on c.customerid=o.customerid join
bookinfo b on b.bookid=o.bookid

This also leaves your where clause free for other types of filters (ie:
where order date between Jan and june/etc...)
if you use an alias there won't be any problems with ambiguous field names.
Also, it easier 6 mo down the road when you revisit the issue...
Good luck

customer ID twice is inefficient since it has the same data. But if you must
have it, try something like:

SELECT orders.customerID as OrdCustomerID,
customers.customerID as CustCustomerID

etc, etc.

And my guess is that you also want to join on orders.customerID =
customers.customerID.

If you can install Mozilla on the client system, then you could download
the 'LiveHTTP Headers' extention - this enables you to go through the
requests and responses made by the browser.

You can find LiveHTTP at

That's what I was saying last week, but not so fast... To get the fast
times, you need to turn off the debug output and then you'll see those
times *drastically* reduced. I was banging my head against the wall last
week not understanding why a simple contact manager would take 500 -
1000ms (according to cfmx debug output). But then it dawned on me that
maybe the debug output was causing the higher times. Sure enough, that's
what it was. I'm now consistently getting 50 - 100ms rendering times.

I would like to see some benchmark times on larger applications though.

RE: ambiguous

2003-08-18 Thread Ben Doom
You need to explicitly tell SQL which table to pull customerid from, or else
you need to use "as" clauses to make the result set nonambiguous.

Like this:

select
orders.customerid as order_c_id,
customers.customerid as this_can_be_anything,
orders.bookid as bookid
from

Any time you have the same column name in two or more tables, you must call
them explicitly and, if you pull the same column name from two or more
tables, you must give them unique names in the recordset.

HTH.

RE: ambiguous

2003-08-18 Thread Mark A. Kruger - CFG
Rob,

You need to alias the ambiguous column. to do this you will need to spell
out your columns rather than use the wild card. For example:

SELECT B.bookTitle, B.author, O.orderId, C.customerName, C.CustomerID
 FROM bookinfo B JOIN Orders O on B.bookid = o.bookid
JOIN customers C on O.customerid = C.customerid

It's always a good idea to show your columns in the query. That way you know
what you are getting. In this case there is a column called 'customerid' in
the Orders table and ALSO in the Customers table. the driver returns a
record set with the column names as keys. since you would end up with 2
columns with the same name, it throws an error.

Good luck

Re: Integrating ColdFusion with ACT!

2003-08-18 Thread Jeffry Houser
ACT! doesn't inherently support ODBC (unless I'm completely missing
something).
Based on my research, the ODBC drivers for ACT! (provided by a 3rd party
developer) cost about twice as much as I paid for ACT!.

Realistically writing a CFX custom tag for it may not be cheaper
(depending on if you bill me out as a musician or as a programmer) but it
might look good on a resume and it sure would make it a lot easier for me
to sync up the web database for my band with the ACT! database we use for
booking and mailings.

ambiguous

2003-08-18 Thread Jeremy Brodie
Robert,

>Both orders and customers have a customerid column

This is the cause of the error. Since both columns have the same field, SQL Server is
not sure which customerID to pull.

In this case you may want to use an alias to determine the columns. Here's an example

SELECT b.*,o.*,c.* FROM bookinfo b, orders o, customers c
Where b.bookid = o.bookid

Even better yet, pick the columns that you need from each of the three tables (This
way you're not pulling customerID twice. Here's an example of what I mean.

SELECT b.FieldName1, b.fieldName2,o.FieldName1, o.FieldName2,c.customerID FROM
bookinfo b, orders o, customers c
Where b.bookid = o.bookid

Let me know if you need further help.

Note that the following has changed meaning between CFMX and CFMX 6.1:

...

In CFMX (6.0) this would behave as you say, i.e., as if it were a named
lock, and so it would single-thread for every user.

In CFMX 6.1, this only locks per-session so only multiple requests from
a single user would be single-threaded.

(I'm not sure how this behaved in CF5 and earlier but the 6.0 behavior
was considered a bug)

RE: packet sniffer

2003-08-18 Thread Broner, Mark, CON, OASD(HA)/TMA
If you are using the stand alone CF they have an apache tool that is
installed with CF. Use {cfmx-root}/runtime/bin/sniffer.exe
It will bring up a sniffer GUI interface to allow TCP monitoring. For
example, you can set up Listen port as '8501' and Target port '80' and make
a request 8501, it will be transferred via this TCP monitor (sniffer) and
this tool will show the detail request and response headers and body
information.

See a blank page when I run a .cfm file

2003-08-18 Thread ColdFusion Programmer
I was having this problem with CFMX with Updater 3 installed, I updated to CFMX 6.1
(Redsky) and still see a blank page when I run a .cfm file on a browser. This is what
I'm trying to do:

When I run this file on the browser I see a blank page. When I view the source I see

Just found this thread on the Macromedia Forums which dates back to 19 Dec 2002.

The problem is still there..

You are quite correct - I misquoted you (sorry). I heard you mention the
book at the CF get together in London and all you did say was what others
had said about it.

RE: cflock - what does it do? Exactly?

2003-08-18 Thread charlie
Actually, I'd like to make a slight correction to that. I've been careful
not to offer an opinion on the book based on my own opinion. I only wrote
part of the book and still have not read all that I did not. But I have
pointed out that the Amazon reviews (and all comments from readers I've seen
on lists) so far have been very positive.

Of course, many will wonder if another CFMX book was needed this late in the
game. But it's worth noting that by coming out so long after the release of
CFMX (it came out just a few months ago), it does indeed have an advantage
over most others in being able to be discuss things relative to lessons
learned in the aftermath of the product's release (we were writing it up to
the end of last year). Of course, there are new things since some of the
later updaters and naturally 6.1 that it doesn't cover. I'm sure other
authors will be reworking their books for the 6.1 release.
