RE: cfajax error

2011-11-11 Thread Rick Faircloth

Seems like, many years ago when I worked with Access,
I had to use something like #dateFormat(parseDateTime(myDate), 'mmm d,
')#
or maybe just #dateFormat(parseDate(myDate), 'mmm d, ')# to get Access
to accept even properly formatted dates.

I can't find any of the old code just now, but maybe this will help.
I'll see if I have any old code in a site or perhaps some test code
that I used before.

I feel certain that the parsing was part of what made it work.

Sorry I can't be more specific!

Have you tried to quote the last item in the values list (the year)?
Depending on how that is defined in the database, it may require quotes.

Instead of:
#year(foodate)#

Try:
'#year(foodate)#'

Re: Adobe drops Flsh for mobile devices

2011-11-11 Thread Judah McAuley

I don't know, Wil, I think that the topic of tone and tenor of
responses to mailing lists (empathy vs correctness in Rick's
terminology) is an excellent discussion for a community to have.

In general, I agree with Rick that empathy is a very positive trait to
bring to the table (in all aspects of life) and that sometimes being
"correct" or "right" can end up with you being viewed as a jerk.

However, in this particular case, I disagree that anyone was not
treating Irvin with empathy. Several people, myself included, agreed
with the empathetic part...that we wish Adobe would spend more time
and money promoting CF. Where the disagreement was was in the area of
whether CF is dying, what that means, how it should be viewed. At
first this was done with respect, by and large, which is surprising
since this topic comes up with regularity. Then Irvin came back with
bones to pick and decided that Dave was putting up straw man arguments
(which was untrue) and perhaps that I didn't like him (which was true
by the end of the conversation but I tried not to let that affect my
answers).

I think that empathy is important and the empathetic reaction to "CF
is dying!" is the one that was given here: It is not dying in a sudden
and unreasonable fashion, don't panic. Take the skills that you've
learned here and learn other languages. This will not only enhance
your ability to find work in the future, it will make you a better CF
programmer today and a more well rounded person in general.

If the sort of empathy that Rick is looking for is more of the "I need
to rant about something and have everyone just kinda nod and let it
go", then I'd suggest cf-community as a better suited venue.

I do think that looking at civility, empathy and tenor of responses on
a list is a good subject to muse upon though.

Cheers,
Judah

Never mind. I skimmed and missed it.  There might be others, but I am guessing
the "Year" column is the culprit.  Try escaping it with square brackets  ie

Usually that means the query is using a reserved word.  The reserved words seem
to be different between the odbc and unicode drivers. IIRC, "password" is one
example. It works under odbc, but fails under the unicode driver. I have seen
that one a lot on the adobe forums.

you can use the ODBC socket option instead, if you google then you
should be able to find some examples.
However I think the easiest and best solution would be to use the
Access Upside wizard to convert to SQL Server, Microsoft also provide
some free migration and upgrade tools to do the job as well.

2011-11-11 Thread Rick Faircloth

No, I think you are probably just unable or unwilling
to allow people to vent. You probably don't do it personally
very often and despise people who do.

Steve Jobs was that way, and his employees are better
off now that he's dead. They admired his work, but hated
him personally. He'd rather run over a person with his
car than show empathy towards another human being. He was
a great technician, but a terrible human being.

He believed that the only "correct" response was the one
he gave, and he always reserved the right to answer questions
the way he saw fit, whether it was destroying another human
being or not.

Too bad he never grew up to see more important issues in life,
as has Bill Gates, who now spends a lot of time and money
trying to make the world a better place and enable the people
in it to live a better life.

One can be a technician and a counselor at the same time; it
just takes more maturity than most people can develop in a
lifetime.

You want empathy? Go to a shrink or talk to your bartender.

On a free mailing list, the "correct" response is the one you get, not
the one you want. And these "broader issue concerns" typically don't
have any positive resolution, have been brought up countless times,
etc, etc. Saying "CF is dying" on a CF technical list isn't really an
appropriate statement for the list. And of course, it always turns out
that CF is dying because you don't like what Adobe is doing with it,
which is beyond the control of everyone on the list - whether you
agree with it or not. You know, I think it would actually be OK if

RE: Adobe drops Flsh for mobile devices

2011-11-11 Thread Rick Faircloth

"The 'correct' answer is the one you get"... wrong.

It's almost never the one you get, whether technically
or psychologically.

It's easy just to be a hard-ass all the time. I know from
personal experience. It's more difficult to show empathy
when it's needed, rather than try to rebut someone's
personal perspective, which cannot usually be proven wrong.

People who mature learn to tell the difference
and act appropriately.

You know, I think it would actually be OK if
someone asked how to help CF, but that's never what these "concerns"
are about. It's all about your dislike for Adobe's marketing plan, or
pricing, or whatever. Well, this is not the place for that.

it installed but installed incorrectly..
The bin folder is in slserver54 but the service points to slserver52..
I modified the registry to point to slserver54 but get an error when trying
to launch the service..
something like 'could not start the service, no error was returned, if you
continue to experience this contact your system administrator'

I'm copying the db folder from CF8 and will try again, I don't know what
else to do.

Manual install ODBC services ColdFusion MX7

2011-11-11 Thread Greg Morphis

I'm trying to follow this page:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19135.html

However the directory doesn't exist on our production server..
I copied it from our dev directory to prod..
The page mentions running a CF template:

Error Occurred:
#cfcatch.message##cfcatch.detail#

Is there a way I can manually run the setup in a command line to get the
same results?

Double clicking on setup.exe yields an Install Shield that never goes away

Thanks in advance

Re: cfajax error

So apparently the problem is within the Microsoft Access with Unicode
driver..
However we don't have the ODBC service installed on production.
I googled manually installing it and it mentioned some SequeLink folder in
the db directory..
There's no DB folder or a SequeLink folder..
How can I download these files and set up this service?

Have you tried to quote the last item in the values list (the year)?
Depending on how that is defined in the database, it may require quotes.

Instead of:
#year(foodate)#

Try:

Printing barcodes

I am creating 4 x 4 labels pdf files, storing them on the server, printing them
to a zebra label printer, then deleting the files. I'm using a window font; Bar
code 39 a, bar code 39 a hr, up to f. The program is creating the labels fine
with the bar code.

when I print them with the label prints with out the bar
code.

But if I open the pdf and print it manual the bar code prints.

Any Ideas?

No, date_taken is 11/11/2011

I'll try the createodbcdateformat()..
I've never had to use that with Oracle so it's something else to try

The field date_taken is a Date/Time field, right? You're inserting an
empty string, not a Date/Time value.

 >>dateformat(foodate,'mm/dd/')

Here is your problem: use CeateODBCDateFormat instead:
#CeateODBCDateFormat(foodate)#

Also #CeateODBCDateFormat(now())#

Furthermore, this will work provided foodate always contains a valid date.
If it is empty, it will cause an error.
In this case, you have to check if foodate is a date, return CreateODBCDate if
yes, and null if not.

You know, I think it would actually be OK if
someone asked how to help CF, but that's never what these "concerns"
are about. It's all about your dislike for Adobe's marketing plan, or
pricing, or whatever. Well, this is not the place for that.

RE: Adobe drops Flsh for mobile devices

2011-11-11 Thread Rick Faircloth

The problem here is that many on this list, demonstrate
what I'll term "list psychopathy"...

Many of the smartest people on the list don't understand the
difference between the need to be correct and the need to
empathize, which is a key aspect of psychopathy.

Sometimes people just need to vent and not be corrected,
and to have someone not necessarily say, "I agree", but
"I understand where you're coming from." Agree as much as
you can, then let the rest go.

It was a hard lesson for me to learn, but people are not
programs, who attitudes can be "debugged" by making the
correct key strokes, or in this case, even perfectly correct
sociopathic arguments.

That doesn't mean he can't get help from the *assumed* CF community. He is
alone because the small community does not have new blood. New blood carries
the torch and keeps things moving. The 'old-timers' are too busy discussing
OOP concepts -which is their right. The problem is that the lack on new
blood will eventually kill CF - and that's the simple point I make.

put a cfsetting tag at the top of your ajax pages to override debug
out to NO, this will allow you to have debugging enabled on the server
without breaking your ajax calls.

The problem with Ajax is when there is an error in the template called by the
function.
This causes an error in the application because it cannot find what is expected
in the text returned by the template. Instead, the CF error output is returned.
What you need to see is the error displayed by the CF server, not the error
that this display caused.

The solution is to debug the template by simulating the Ajax call and calling
it directly by hand.

That's probably the problem right there. If you have CF's server-side
debugging enabled for AJAX responses, that'll cause the client-side

If it's actually making an AJAX call, use something like Firebug to
view the returned value, and you might see your error immediately. My
guess is that the function is returning invalid data of some sort,
which is why it's running successfully but the code that calls the

cfajax error

2011-11-11 Thread Greg Morphis

I was tasked in moving an old app on a CF8 server to a CF7 server. The app
has some cfajax code that I'm not familiar with. I'm hoping someone here
has seen the error..
This is most of an email I sent internally to the person who created in a
few years back but thought I'd also ask a larger crowd

The error message is a javascript popup and all it shows is:

*The page at localhost:8300 says: *
SyntaxError: Unexpected token <

This happens whenever you hit "Save" on the time_off page (when requesting
Time Off).
I've added some alerts in the code:

DWRUtil.useLoadingMessage("Checking for duplicate request...");

//alert(oForm.employee_id.value);
//alert(oForm.time_off_start_date.value);
//alert(oForm.time_off_end_date.value);

DWREngine._execute(_ajaxConfig._cfscriptLocation, null,
'getEmployeeTimeOff', oForm.employee_id.value,
oForm.time_off_start_date.value, oForm.time_off_end_date.value, true,
handleTimeOffDuplicateCheck);

//alert("getEmployeeTimeOff");

And all of the alerts go off, including the "getEmployeeTimeOff" alert.
I put an alert at the top of the handleTimeOffDuplicateCheck and it doesn't
run.
So it's not even making it to that function.

I thought maybe it's in that CF function getEmployeeTimeOff
so I changed it to static values..

SELECT tt.date_taken,
Format(tt.date_taken,'mm/dd/') as text_date_taken,
month(tt.date_taken) as date_taken_month,
tt.time_off_id,
toff.descr as time_off_descr
FROM time_taken tt
INNER JOIN time_off toff ON toff.time_off_id = tt.time_off_id
WHERE tt.employee_id = 'e0012345'
AND tt.deletedon is null
AND tt.date_taken >= 11/11/2011
AND tt.date_taken <= 11/11/2011
ORDER BY tt.date_taken

which runs in Access and returns 0 rows..
But when I try to add Time Off, same "Syntax <" error.

Then I put quotes around the dates knowing this is wrong and should give a
DB error.. and it does! Javascript error about types.
So it makes it to the CF function, that I assume THAT even works, and then
something happens coming back but where?
The alert in the Javascript function that should run on return, doesn't
run.. but if you throw in an error in the query, it errors..

In Chrome, I do see a couple JavaScript errors:
When choosing the person in the drop down it errors:
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property 'checked' of undefined

Which doesn't seem to affect anything.. it's still returns the employee.
The element it's referring to would only be there if you're an admin.

The error that bothers me is when you hit Save, it errors with:

Refused to set unsafe header "Referer"

but it makes it to CF fine, just not back.. I googled that yesterday and
nothing stood out.

I'm at my wits end and I don't know where else to look in the code. Was
something anything that had to be installed on the system? Anything you
guys can recommend, suggest, remember.. would be helpful.

Re: Adobe drops Flsh for mobile devices

2011-11-11 Thread Russ Michaels

What I always find most annoying about this topic when it comes up is
the basis on what such claims are made, usually the person saying
ColdFusion is dead/dying has absolutely no evidence or research to
back this up, it is just their own opinion.

In order to have basis for such a claim you would need to be working
in a business that deals with ColdFusion in such a way that you are
aware of the number of people using ColdFusion and new customers
enquiring about ColdFusion. Just being a developer and using cf-talk
doesn't really fall into that category.
As I run a cfcommunity and work for a cf hosting co I do see how many
new users/customers come and go from those 2 perspectives, so I can
give some real world feedback on that and what I can say is that
things are pretty quiet on both fronts, not much new user activity, so
things are pretty stagnant.
We have also noticed recently that quite a few hosts are dropping
support for CF as we have been getting a lot of their cast off's.
We have also noticed an increased number of customers migrating to
PHP, which mainly seems to be down to they have been told by someone
else that CF is dead or because they wanted to use Wordpress.

Sure the community seems a bit dead these days, but this in itself
does not speak for ColdFusion.
It could simply mean there are not many new developers coming into the
world of CF or those that are have not joined CF-TALK or do not want
to because they don't like communities. Many folks don't join lists
like this because they don't want to get attacked by trolls and flame
baiter's and shot down by so called GURU's for the way they code.
If I was a newbie to CF and joined this list, i'd probably
un-subscribe a week later and I bet a lot of the old members have gone
for the same reasons.

As for there being no resources for newbies, here are a few I know off
the top of my head.

1. livedocs.adobe.com
Plenty of good stuff right here in the docs for newbies
2. www.easycfm.com
3. The Adobe CF forums
4. www.cfmldeveloper.com
5. www.sitepoint.com - e.g http://www.sitepoint.com/cold-fusion-tutorial/
