Threaded cfhttp example
Hello Experts! I have been trying to create a multi-threaded cfhttp request script, but I have so far failed miserably. I want to run 10 concurrent threads that call URLS using cfhttp and I want to store the results (basically cfhttp.filecontent) in an array or a similar structure that I can loop once all threads have finished. Can someone provide me with a working example of this? ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:360120 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Query columns "shifting"
Hey guys Got at bit of a weird thing going on in my code... Sometimes when I make a certain query, the query will return from the DB without error, but when I try to use the query I find that the columns have "shifted", so that in a column where I would expect a date there is now a string. Has this ever happened to any of you? ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:359026 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Source control in CF
Man oh man, seems like I've managed to dive headfirst into a bit of a hornets' nest here :) I think many valid and interesting points have been raised in this thread. While I will say, that I am still not a "believer", I am certainly going to have a bit of a rethink about my position on some of the issues raised by you guys. At all places where I have worked (all smallish companies), there have been dedicated people to do server setups and maintenance and there has also always been restrictions on what "developers" could install on their machine themselves. (I don't know if this is a particular Danish or European way to do things - seems that things might be a bit different in the US) Believe or not, in the about 10 year timespan I am referring to above, there has be no catastrophes as a result of peoples work being overwritten. This does NOT mean, that I would advocate a shared resources (as I have already stated previously) - given a free choice between developing on shared resources and developing locally, I am quite sure I would tend towards the latter. As for the points raised about how much a "developer" (junior or senior) should know about setting what type of servers up, I am clearly of a different opinion than some of the other participants. While I can certainly see validity in some of the points made, I also tend to think, that some of these differences come down to "religion" or "belief", while others come from me being used to one type of setup and others being used to another. While I have only very limited CF experience in working with a setup where everyone develops locally, I have done quite a bit of this in C#. Having worked with both types, I would contend that they each have their benefits and drawbacks. I think that this thread has reached a point of "terminal velocity" and that I have taken away from what I can on these issues. I will therefore bow out of this thread by saying, that I am very appreciative about the large volume of input and that I am even more appreciative about how you guys have made me reevaluate my position on some things. I love when people can shake up things a bit, and I will most definitely take some of the things that have been discussed in this thread to heart. So thanks you guys - some of your imparted wisdom will find its way into a brand new CF developer, starting on monday :) ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:354252 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Source control in CF
I admit, there may be every chance that the reason why I don't agree with you is that A) I am not used to an environment in which developers develop locally or (perhaps more frighteningly) B) I am just not very bright. I am always willing to learn and expand my horizon though, so could you perhaps briefly explaine, why you consider it necessary for a developer to be able to set up sites on an Apache or IIS? (I assume it's not just for the sheer practicality of it - so that you don't have to wait around for the IT dept.) ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:354243 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Source control in CF
@Russ I can certainly tell, that we have very different views as to which constitutes a quote-unquote developer. In keeping with the automotive analogies, I feel that what Raymond is essentially saying, is that he would not hire you to drive a car, unless you were a mechanic. I feel differently about this, as I would rather hire a chauffeur to drive me around than a mechanic - but this is my personal preference of course. Would I expect my chauffeur to be able to diagnose a flat tire and change it? Absolutely. Would I expect him to be able to diagnose and fix a problem in the engine management system? Absolutely not. In the same way I personally feel, that although a developer should know (or be able to deduce) about potential security issues like the ones you describe, I would not expect him to know about all the internals of the server. If nothing else, I think we can safely say, that Mr. Camden would not employee me, as I would much rather leave setting up servers and the likes, to those who specialize in precisely that :) (oh and on a side note, I find it very interesing to learn about the obviously different views expressed in this thread - gives a man something to ponder) ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:354241 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm

I don't think developers should be fine tuning Apache, or DB >servers. But they *should* be able to run a visual installer and accept the >defaults. I run MySQL and SQL Server just fine. I don't consider myself >even close to being a DBA, but I can make a database and tables and that >should be good enough I'd say. > > Raymond, I absolutely agree, that we must discern between developers being able to do simple point-and-click installs and configurations - and them been able to do deep-level server analysis and tuning. And you are absolutely right, developers should know about databases and tables, and be able to create tables using the correct datatypes, relations, constraints etc. But I also understand, why the IT department might impose restrictions as to who is able to do what (we cannot, for example, create new databases ourselves - only the IT department can do that). They are the ones who are ultimately held responsible for the performance, stability and security of the servers (not the code that we write) - and I understand that them imposing restrictions can aid in that. But like I wrote in response to Andrew's comments - if I was to setup development anew tomorrow, I would probably also favor a setup where each developer can develop locally, without it interfering with other developers. ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:354237 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Source control in CF
@Andrew >Most developers should know how to install ColdFusion, it is dead simple to >begin with, maintaining it well that is another story. If your premise is that we are talking about developers who are running a setup where each person has a local CF server on his/her machine, then I would agree that it might very well be beneficial for developers to be able to diagnose and fix issues with their own server, without having to wait for the IT department. >Lost productivity is worse when all developers share and code off the same >server, whether you want to believe that or not. But like you said it was >5-6 years ago, so a revisit might be a good thing. If you are talking from personal experience, having run both types of setups in parallel (either at the same time or at least under as similar conditions as possible, in terms of time, tasks, complexity etc) - then this is indeed valuable insight. However, if I went to my CEO with such a broad and general claim, he would immediately demand that I back it up with hard evidence - which I would have a terrible time doing. Without concrete evidence, I don't know how I would lobby in favor of the company spending the time and money, in changing our current setup. With that being said, if I was to setup up development from scratch tomorrow and I could choose either of the two setups (the current setup was already firmly in place when I joined the company in 2005) - I would probably also favor the setup where each developer runs his/her own server and can develop locally. ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:354236 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Source control in CF
Good tips about developers being able to run software under other licensing rules - I did not think that one through fully I can see now. I personally disagree, respectfully of course, with the people who say, that developers should be able to maintain CF and web server, as well as set up 3rd party components etc. To me, that is like saying that any developer should be able to set up a database server, know how DNS functions etc. While I would agree, that knowing some of these things could be beneficial for a developer from time to time, I feel that developers should be specialists who focus solely on developing - not on server maintenance. I don't know if this might be a cultural difference (in terms of how things are done) - me being Danish personally - but in all places I've worked the last 10 years, the IT department has done most of the configuration and maintenance of developer machines. Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with developers setting things up themselves, but I understand (from the company's perspective) how it can be beneficial to have these things centralized. Following the previous inputs in this thread, I went digging in my old emails and it turns out (I had completely forgotten about this) that we did indeed talk about switching over from shared resources, to each developer running their own complete setup. The plans were eventually dropped, as it was deemed too expensive (in terms of lost productivity) and adding an additional layer of complexity in terms of maintenance. This was back in 2007 and perhaps it is time to revisit this once more. You guys' passionate arguments for this approach has certainly given me some food for thought and I will take this up with my colleagues in the near future. ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:354233 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Source control in CF
First of, let me thank all of you for your (quite lively) inputs. The discussion did spiral a bit out of control in a GIT vs SVN tussle, but I understand and can respect that people have strong opinions as to which systems they prefer. I also wholeheartedly agree, that there are certain advantages to be gained by each developer having a working copy of the code on their local machines. I would, however, contest the absoluteness of this as the only way to go. While it is true, that the CF Developer licensing does allow for each developer to run a CF server locally without paying a license fee, the time spent by the IT department setting up and supporting 50+ websites (plus our backend/admin software) on each developer machine does come at a cost. Add in the cost of additional licenses for 3rd party components (like ImageGlue or ISAPI rewrite for example) and the cost of being able to run code locally can add up quite quickly. For us at least, running on a shared codebase with 1 development server and all code available via a webpath (usually mounted as a drive for convenience) works quite well and has done so without major snafus for 10+ years. Is this an "oldschool approach"? Very much so. Is it a good solution? Maybe not for every company, but it works for us. I understand, that our setup makes running version/source control very difficult and it is a conclusion that I feared I might reach, when I posted the question initially. I think that I may have to go back and have a long, hard think about how we will proceed from here. If any of you, who are running a setup where each developer runs the code locally, I would be very appreciative if you could give me 30 minutes to an hour of your time, so I might pick your brain as to how you have gone about getting this setup and how you maintain it (I think this is probably best done over Skype). So once again, thank you guys so much for all your input :) ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:354174 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Source control in CF
Hi all! At my company we're once again talking about setting up source control for our CF. I've been googling and reading for quite a while now and so far I've gathered, that we first of all need a SVN server of some sort on a central server, so that the entire team can access it. I've looked at VisualSVN Server and managed to install it and even add a repository. But now I am getting into problems, which I am hoping someone here might be able to help me solve; Problem 1: We naturally already have a whole bunch of code that we'd like to put into our repository - but I can't figure out how to do that. Is this where I need something like TortoiseSVN? And if so, how do I structure my repository? Problem 2: We don't use a setup where each developer runs a local copy of the code, instead we all run the code on a single develoment server, accessing the code-files via a webpath (\\server\project\file.cfm) So instead of checking the file out to a local copy, I'd like to use a "exclusive-lock-in-place" sort of thing - is this possible? Problem 3: I am trying to use the Subclipse plugin, but I simply can't figure it out. Does anyone know of a "how to use Subclipse for dummies" tutorial? Problem 4: Is it possible to auto-lock/check out files in Eclipse as soon as they are opened by a developer? (versus manually selecting to lock the opens a file? Or how does one go about ensuring that no two developers can change a file at the same time (referring to problem 2)? As you can tell, I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment, so any and all feedback is appreciated. I am not able to get this to work, so has anyone ever created something similar and been able to succesfully implement Expires headers? ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:351927 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm

@Russ - I will definitely try and have a look at the stack traces from FusionReactor. Truth be told, I was not aware that this possibility existed - so thanks for enlightening me :-) @Dave - As I hinted at in my earlier post, I suspect this may indeed be an issue in the "transport layer" so to speak. I would love be able to prove this conclusively somehow as I fear this may become a tug of war between the developers and the server-wranglers (both of whom will try to pass the blame back and forth). ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:350615 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Strange issue with random slow pages
At the company where I work, we are having some strange performance issues which are leaving us perplexed and at our wits ends. We have 2 CF8 servers running the backend of our CMS. Most of the time, things run well, but sometimes (seems random) we get strange hangups, where pages that normally run in less that .5 of suddenly run for 10-20 seconds. Moments later, they run fast again. I've been trying to use FusionReactor in combination with a very simple tracking script, where I use tickcount to time our how it takes to render a page on the server. What's really leaving me stumped, is the fact that sometimes there's a huge difference in how long FusionReactor says a request took (13 seconds for example) and the time I logged for the page to render on the server (.25 seconds). It seems like there is "lag" somewhere, but I am unable to figure out how to A) determine that this is indeed that case (as opposed to the code being crap) and B) how to fix it. Any help and/or input from you guys will be greatly appreciated! ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:350605 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Strange errors in Missing Template Handler
Here's a bit of a conundrum we've been wrestling with a the office. We have the Missing Template Handler set on our CF server - let's say it points to /notfound.cfm In notfound.cfm we have the following code: You've reached notfound.cfm If I call a site on the server with a cfm-file I know is not present (www.site.com/nothere.cfm) I get the expected result with the page displaying "You've reached notfound.cfm". However - if I go and break the cfml in notfound.cfm: You've reached notfound.cfm And call the same file (www.site.com/nothere.cfm) I get an unhandled 404-error from the CF server - and not a 500-error like I would expect. I mean fast in comparison to the traditional form-post upload - I am sure most solutions would be faster than that :) But I'll definitely look into your suggestion. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:315321 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4
Re: Is it possible to override that CF starts weeks on sundays?
A few things to clarify :) The country is Denmark (Scandinavia aka Nothern Europe) Here the week always starts on a monday, business or otherwise. Before I started using CF, I used classic ASP and in that language you decide on things like which day the week starts with and which week a year starts with. (more on that here: http://www.w3schools.com/VBscript/func_datepart.asp) I was just wondering whether you could do something similar in CF ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:315320 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4
Re: Is it possible to override that CF starts weeks on sundays?
Not really what I am looking for - I am interested in overriding the standard behavior, not continuously coding around it. Thanks for the input - but not really what I am looking for. Is it possible to override that CF starts weeks on sundays?
This affects among other this the correctness of weeknumber returned from datepart - which is driving me nuts! Case in point: DatePart("ww","2008-10-19") = 43 But according to my calendar, sunday the 19th of october is in week 42. Upload of files (particularly images) - advice needed...
Hello experts We are looking to improve file uploads into our CMS. Currently we are using a form-post and CFFile, but I am not happy with the performance. I have the following wishlist; - faster uploads - multiple file upload - limits on how large files you can upload (bytesize) - limits on how large images you can upload (pixelsize) - good error handling So... any recommendations? Thx :o) ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:315190 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4
Re: CF8 image resize makes picture too small??
With a picture that 600x400 I get width = 160 px (as I asked) and a height of 106px. Re: Best CF editor?
Basically, it seems my choices come down to something like this; HOMESITE PROS: sturdy and reliable CONS: not being updated ECLIPSE PROS: free, lots of good features, nice functions for CF CONS: buggy, doesn't handle large files, even critical bugs seem to take a LONG time to get fixed APTANA PROS: free, very similar to Eclipse + option not to use working sets CONS: same as for Eclipse DREAMWEAVER PROS: fast, similar to HomeSite in many ways CONS: a bit steep on price, doesn't have the many nice feature of Eclipse For the moment, it seems I might end up using Eclipse for most of my work and HomeSite for the large files (until I may eventually have time to split them up). I am not at all happy about that solution, as I would really prefer using the same editor all the time and pouring all my energy into customizing and optimizing that particular editor. If anyone from the Eclipse-gang is reading this - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix the issue with the large files, which has been reported as a bug about 2 years ago... ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;192386516;25150098;k Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:306509 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4
Re: Best CF editor?
I am one of those ones using Eclipse and I must say that I am not all convinced yet... I love many of the features, which makes many things much easier - but at the same time I also fully acknowledge that the speed (or lack thereof) is a big problem. I sometimes need to go into CF files og 4000+ lines and when I do, Eclipse becomes sluggy to an extend that makes working almost impossible. My reason for starting this thread is, that I would prefer for all developers in our team to use the same editor - hopefully with synergistic results. But please keep the comments coming, I also welcome the opportunity to aquaint myself with new development tools. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;192386516;25150098;k Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:306221 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4

Hey guys We've been talking 'round the office about which editor is best for Coldfusion. A couple of us use HomeSite, others use (CF)Eclipse. What are YOU using and why? float in DB becomes integer in CF?!
I have a weird problem.. I have the value 12,53131 in a field of type float in a MS SQL Server database/table. I run some SQL to retrieve the value in SQL Server Management Studio and get the correct value back (12,53131). If I run the same SQL in a CF query, the value is returned as 12?!?!
