file upload, large files, HTTP/FTP, CF/IIS, CFFILE - magic formula?

2001-08-17 Thread Mike Amburn

need the ability to upload 5mb-10mb CSV/XML file to a CF template that
will process it. i'm attempting to use a multi-part form post, but
here's the problems i've experienced:

1. once the web server receives the form post, it has to then transfer
it to CF. when the file is large, this process can take over 5-10
minutes. this problem is documented all over the web (just do a search).
unfortunately, in my case, it can't take longer than a minute or so.

2. if form post via HTTP to IIS doesn't work, is there any way to upload
a file through the web via FTP? i know you can ftp into a ftp server via
Javascript, but i don't know if you can upload files via Javascript.

3. i've considered other solutions -- submitting to a servlet (elimates
IIS), uploading FTP via signed applet -- but would like to find an
interim solution using CF. any other ideas?

RE: CF Hack -- hope this helps

2001-07-18 Thread Mike Amburn

FYI, here's a post from the editor of BugTraq:

---
This is definitely being caused by the problems discussed in
MS01-033.
Its a buffer overflow in Index Server, which is installed and started
by
default. You may be able to find traces in your IIS logs by looking
for
requests for default.ida followed by a bunch of Ns. There will be no
trace on disk, its pushed into memory through the overflow where it
continues to execute. After the defacement it will also scan other IP
addresses looking for more IIS boxes to inflict the same damage to.

As to being patched, many things might cause a patched system to
become
unpatched. Simply adding or modifying a component can revert a patched
system to an unpatched state.

In this case, the best thing to do is to unmap .ida and .ida in your
Extensions Mapping screen, and then get the patch in case you decide
to
use that functionality later on.

oracle long table corrupts itself... ideas?

I have a table where I store user session information. At some point
over time, the index corrupts itself and i begin to get foreign key
constraints because it'll attempt to insert a row using a key ID that
has already been used. Ironically, it is also the only table in the
database that includes a field of the data type long.

Is that just a coincidence or could there be a correlation? If not, what
else could be corrupting my index? or is it something other than my
index?

CFSCRIPT memory leak?

2001-04-17 Thread Mike Amburn

I have discovered a memory leak in CFSCRIPT this afternoon, but couldn't
find any information about it in Allaire's Knowledge Base. Does anyone
know anything about it?

Basically, when using CFSCRIPT to build a large string, the memory goes
through the rough, especially virtual memory. The following code will
basically crash a server/workstation with 256megs of RAM (at least in
our tests) as it pushes VM as far as 700+ megs:

cfscript
   tempStr = "";
   for (x=1; x LTE 5000; x = x + 1)
   {
  tempStr = tempStr
"x/x/x/x/x/";
   }
/cfscript

however, written in CFML, not only is the memory usage hardly anything,
the execution is faster and there is no leak. We've tried to reset the
variable to empty string with no change.

Any thoughts?

RE: How to encript source code? -- (only step 1)

2001-01-19 Thread Mike Amburn

it's just as easy to decrypt a file than it is to encrypt it, and anyone
with a search engine can figure out how. (i.e.
http://www.google.com/search?q=cfdecrypt)

as someone stated before, encrypting files must only be considered a
deterent. you must then put legalize in your licensing agreement to
support this step, how the code is delivered encrypted an any attempt to
decrypt, decompile, or re-engineer the code is prohibited and results in
an immediate revoke of the agreement. something like again. again,
encrypting does nothing if you don't back it up.

Oracle doesn't store large data.... HELP !?!?!

2001-01-17 Thread Mike Amburn

we recently migrated our application from SQL7 to Oracle. personally,
i'd go back to SQL7 in a heart-beat, but that's not my decision. the
biggest problem we have is regarding size of data. we have a simple
table that stores variables as name/value pairs name=Homer,
city=Atlanta, etc. easy enough. however, some have large values. for
example, one variable is a comma-delimited list that can reach 1400
characters. that's a big list. however, SQL7 had no problem at all
storing and retrieving. Oracle seems to be different. for whatever
reason, we can update/insert the large value, but we can not select the
large value. it gives some weird Oracle error about having too small a
buffer. we have tried to set it as varchar2(4000), long, and CLOB, with
not success. trying CLOB had a whole set of other errors.

then there's the issue that some variables are stored as serialized WDDX
structures, which can be really big. Oracle didn't even try to accept
that.

does anyone have a clue what's going on or how to get oracle to play
fair with large values?
me + oracle = Sum(desperate + frustrated)

RE: Version Control -- from CVS user recent evaluator perspective

2001-01-15 Thread Mike Amburn

(I just ended an evaluation of version control tools, so here's my input
as a developer and evaluator. I have personally used SourceSafe, PVCS
and CVS.)

CVS, IMO, is probably one of the most powerful revision control products
in production. as an open-source product, you can customize features to
fit your own development products or processes.

HOWEVER, that said

1. if you have not used CVS before and do not have anyone in-house that
has used it before, i highly suggest AGAINST using CVS.

CVS is basically written for geeks by geeks. it's about as intuitive
as vi,
and i dare say that it would be very hard for anyone not very
familiar
with the linux world to set up, administer, and use, if not
impossible.
And even if you can, you can expect training existing and new
employees
for CVS to be a full-time position because even when you figure out
how
to use it, the full learning curve takes months to become really
familiar.

FYI, we have had a very successful tenure with CVS, but we are now
dumping
it because it is just too difficult in a fast-pace environment to
support
and train new and existing employees since even after three years
only two
of us understand exactly how everything works.

2. if you are considering CVS only because its free, i would highly
suggest reconsidering.

Time is money and money is time. The time you waste supporting the
previously mentioned issues will cost more than the price of another
   solution.

3. if you do not intend on customizing and recompiling CVS to fit your
business, i would suggest looking at another solution before CVS.

The power of CVS really is in its ability to be customized (see OPEN
SOURCE SOFTWARE). if you're not going to use this feature, the
complexity
and prevoiusly mentioned hardship of using CVS isn't worth the price
tag
   (even though it's free).

if you're small, i suggest SourceSafe. even though it has it's issues,
it's quick and it's easy. if you're large, i'd suggest PVCS, which is
expensive and involves a lot of training and support. I can't really
comment on ClearCase, other than the fact that I really did not like it
when I evaluated it. Their concepts are very proprietary, much different
than the other tools, and i perceived training for this tool would be a
nightmare because it was so different. It's also VERY VERY VERY
expensive.

hope that helps.

oracle/SQL7 migration... keep finding little tricks - HELP

2001-01-03 Thread Mike Amburn

after moving to oracle several months, we continue to discover new
"tricks" that are dragging down our development efforts.

for example, SQL7 will order a column with NULL values at the top, while
Oracle will order them at the bottom.

   sorted by MSSQL7: NULL, NULL, NULL, 1, 2, 3
sorted by Oracle: 1, 2, 3, NULL, NULL, NULL

case sensitivity also throws off ordering, oracle will order all
uppercase before ordering lowercase:

sorted by MSSQL7: jones, Smith, thomas, White
sorted by Oracle: Smith, White, jones, thomas

can anyone point me to a resource (webpage, book, etc) or take a few
minutes to list any little trick that you found or know? it seems like
there would be some resource out there specifically targeted for
MSSQL-to-Oracle migrations, but i haven't been able to find any and it's
the little things that kill your application! any help would be greatly
appreciated!

For SQL Server, take a look at "BULK INSERT" (look in the Books

bulk insert that data (duh) into a table you specify. The
 syntax is a
bit trickier than that, but fairly simple.

RE: Crystal Reports on a separate server?

2000-11-22 Thread Mike Amburn

Anybody know if you can relocate Crystal Reports to a
 separate server, and
call up CFREPORTs on your CF server? I'd like to stick the
 Crystal Reports
engine on a separate box from the CF box...

We have Crystal running on a separate box, however, we do not use
CFREPORTS. Our chosen platform is CF, however, because of the
integration and performance gain, we use the ASP that ships with Crystal
to run reports. So a CF page on an application server will submit a
report request to an ASP page on the report server. I've heard we've had
a lot of success with this implementation, it really does decrease the
load on your main application servers, especially since Crystal is such
a resource hog when invoked.

ColdFusion and Windows 2000 encryption? Security method?

2000-11-15 Thread Mike Amburn

Has anyone worked with CF and the file encryption in Windows 2000?

We tried to set up a user account and set the ColdFusion Services to run

ColdFusion was not able to get access to the files. Anyone know how

Here's our goal: We need to provide our application on a laptop for a

allowing the laptop user to open any ColdFusion files to protect
intellectual property. Other than through Windows 2000 encryption (which
we haven't been able to get working), does anyone know of another way to
accomplish this goal?

we used to use BrowserHawk from cyScape. it's a great component and
provides some really cool information like whether the user has disabled
java, javascript, or cookies. the problem is that they require that you
license every machine that it runs on.

$489 x 25 developers ($12225)
+ $489 x 10 servers ($4890)
= too much $$$ for one little COM object only executed once

we've since written our own components that don't do as much, but save

CFTRANSACTION only works in same page?

2000-09-28 Thread Mike Amburn

i have a complex transaction that i have grouped into multiple includes.
i am trying to wrap them into a transaction so that if any part fails, i
can rollback.

cftransaction action="begin"
   cfinclude template="part1.cfm" (if exception, rollback)
   cfinclude template="part2.cfm" (if exception, rollback)
   cfinclude template="part3.cfm" (if exception, rollback)
/cftransaction

however, if i have an error in part2, everything in part1 is still
committed. AND, if i try to set cftransaction action="rollback"/ to
any included file, it gives me an error saying that it's not wrapped in
a cftransaction.

am i to assume from this that i can't use cftransaction to group
includes? seriously?

[CF-Talk] RE: cflocking.. -- ATTENTION -- MY CASE STUDY

2000-09-18 Thread Mike Amburn

Yes but during that test were those variables being written to at
the same time? I beleive that if you do a read without locking,
and a write occurs or is occuring at the same time, you will have
 problems.

But what if there is no writing? Say you setup a datasource name if
its not defined. Then thats it, it will never be written to again
until the server restarts and application variables are lost.

In this situation can't you do reads without locking?

after the application loaded, there were no additional variables being
written, just read. and yes, that was what caused the fatalities.

there is a setting in CF Admin that can do the read locks automatically.
that is what we're currently using and even under load testing we cannot
find any real performance degradation.

i know it sounds really bad. i've asked myself over and over "why the
#$(* did allaire implement something that would force me to possibly
rewrite everything i've done". to tell you the truth, that's exactly why
we'll be moving to JSP/EJB in the next six months -- vendor
independence. i can only wonder how many other development companies
have or will be moving off ColdFusion because v4.5 was so unstable and
questionable.

RE: transferring SQL server DB to an ISP

2000-09-14 Thread Mike Amburn

You can back it up to file on the source
machine, then send that file off to the target machine, where the
administrator of that machine could then restore it from the
 file.

i have not had any luck using this method. it was really simple on SQL6,
however SQL7 seems to require that the backup file being restored must
have come from the same machine it's being restored to. i've even tried
to create a temp backup file, replace it with a new backup file that
includes the new data, and then try to restore that but somehow SQL7
knows that it's different and won't use it.

In this vein, you could send the actual database files
 themselves - without
even doing a backup - and they could be attached on the
 target server using
sp_attach_db (which I believe is new to SQL Server 7).

can you provide more information about "sp_attach_db"? i've never heard
of that...

thanx!

The consensus was *NEVER* that you didn't have to lock reads.
Cold Fusion doesn't FORCE locking - it is up to you to lock
 access to an Application variable.
If you lock the writes but don't lock the reads, then when
Cold Fusion comes upon a read without a lock it will blindly
run the read even if there is a (locked) write executing at
the same time. In other words, locking writes without locking
 reads is completely useless.

All an Exclusive lock does is mark the variable so that
ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO LOCK IT will have to wait until the lock is freed.
It is totally up to YOUR LOCKS to ensure the variable is not
used by two threads at the same time.

recently, we hired Allaire to come in and load test (using

perfect under normal load. however, as soon as we added simultaneous
load (users requesting the same resources at the same exact time), we
immediately crashed with deadlocks in the database and application
errors. again, runs perfect with all of our customers in
 production, but
 fails immediately under load.

up until this point, our strategy had followed the majority
 consensus:
lock your writes, but not your reads. however, after 14 hours of
analyzing the problems of the load testing between Allaire and I, we
finally just enabled the auto-locking capabilities in CF
 Admin to see if
that did anything. (keep in mind, the Allaire rep had warned before
about locking reads) the result after enabling auto-lock?
 not a single
problem for the remainder of the engagement! that's right...
 no errors,
no deadlocks, nothing. it functioned under load BEAUTIFULLY with the
auto-lock enabled until we finally got the numbers we wanted and
 finished the analysis.

so again, i don't want to argue with anyone about their own strategy.
however, seeing it happen right in front of my eyes has me absolutely
convinced WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that allaire is
 COMPLETELY correct
when they suggest everyone lock BOTH application writes AND
 reads. and
to tell you the truth, the performance hit for using the
 auto-lock seems
to be very minimal (at least on our application) so don't
 worry too much
about that if you don't want to go back and insert all the read-only
 locks.

so that's my two cents. hope it helps. =)

about locking reads) the result after enabling auto-lock? not a single
problem for the remainder of the engagement! that's right... no errors,
no deadlocks, nothing. it functioned under load BEAUTIFULLY with the
auto-lock enabled until we finally got the numbers we wanted and
finished the analysis.

so again, i don't want to argue with anyone about their own strategy.
however, seeing it happen right in front of my eyes has me absolutely
convinced WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that allaire is COMPLETELY correct
when they suggest everyone lock BOTH application writes AND reads. and
to tell you the truth, the performance hit for using the auto-lock seems
to be very minimal (at least on our application) so don't worry too much
about that if you don't want to go back and insert all the read-only
locks.

so that's my two cents. hope it helps. =)

how much is too much optimization?

2000-08-23 Thread Mike Amburn

consider the following code:

cfset errorMessage = "This error message is too long to see on one line
without scrolling"
"across the screen. Therefore, I have broken it up into three
different strings that I"
"combine to create one error message"

i realize that compiling this statement involves several steps. however,
after it's compiled into "p-code", does it really matter? does programming
like this only affect the initial compilation, which is cached, or does it
affect every hit?

i think this is a very important question because if it only affects the
first hit, it puts an optimation effort into a completely different
perspective.

OT: user interface resources/groups

2000-08-11 Thread Mike Amburn

can anyone suggest any user interface focused websites or user groups?

i'm interested in researching application standards like:
 - button naming (Save or Submit? Edit or Modify?)
 - button placement (Save before Cancel or Cancel before Save?)
 - current trends (tabbed, explorer-like menus, etc)
 - UI critique of current software (MacOS, Windows) and websites

thanx to any that respond

RE: First JSP Fusebox Site?

where are you using CF? all i saw were JSP pages...

 Subject: First JSP Fusebox Site?

http://BIGWORDS.com launched a new fuseboxed site this morning,
 using a JSP
/ J2EE / CF combo running Weblogic and Cold Fusion on a combination of NT
 and Sun machines.

The site is written completely in FUSEBOX. It has been for a long time,
but we just re-launched the site using JSP for a large portion of
 the site,
and we used the fusebox standard, with some additional file types which I
 plan to recommend to fusebox.org.

Please don't take this email as spam, i'm not asking any of you to buy
anything. I simply wanted to show off a new fusebox site which uses a
combination of CF and JSP/J2EE, and which (IMHO) fluidly translates the
 concepts of fusebox to JSP/J2EE.

And I'd be happy to hear your feedback, or answer questions.

CFINCLUDE... compiler question

2000-08-03 Thread Mike Amburn

take the following code:

cfif thisFlag
   cfinclude template="thisFile.cfm"
/cfif

Will ColdFusion evaluate the expression first before it includes the
file -OR- will it include the file before it evaluates the expression?

in other words, does CF say "ok, thisFlag is false, so i won't evaluate
what's in the include file" or will it say "before i look at this, i need to
include everything first"?

thanx for any response

RE: CFLOCKs.... is this really necessary? - hold on a sec

2000-07-28 Thread Mike Amburn

  http://www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/archives/0208/Forta/

I think Ben explains this pretty good here.

unfortunately, his article completely contradicts some of the statements
made earlier in this thread. Ben says:

"...CF developers typically create variables in the APPLICATION scope...and
are careful never to overwrite them. If an application contained variables
like this, variables that were never updated (after initial creation), you
wouldn't really need to lock them at all."

so according to Ben Forta, the only time you need to lock an application
variable is when you are changing the value (i.e. CFSET), *NOT* when you are
simply reading it (i.e. CFOUTPUT). But Zack said in a previous reply:

"IT IS AN ABSOLUTE NECESITY THAT YOU LOCK ALL SESSION, APPLICATION, AND
SERVER VARIABLES WHEN YOU WRITE OR READ THEM."

i will say that this is one thing that our organization is struggling
with... in almost every question, someone says one thing and someone else
says another. there doesn't seem to be much agreement anymore in the
community. perhaps this is because allaire has changed CF so much with 4 and
4.5, but it certainly doesn't look good when i research something like
CFLOCK and create a standard to use it only to find out that someone else is
saying otherwise.

anyone else feel like this?

CFLOCKs.... is this really necessary?

2000-07-27 Thread Mike Amburn

According to Allaire documentation, all reads/writes to application
variables should be protected with a lock. Does this mean that I only really
need to lock variables that I set in the application.cfm -OR- does it mean
that I really need to lock every instance in the entire application?

for example:

cfoutput
   Thank you for visiting the
   cflock ...#application.applicationName#/cflock
   sponsored by
   cflock ...#application.companyName#/cflock
/cfoutput
cflock ...
   cfif application.appOpen
  A href="here.cfm"Click Here/a to begin
   /cfif
/cflock

if it is the latter, what happens when the variable is include another tag,
such as CFIF or CFQUERY? don't you have to lock the entire tag, i.e.:
cflock ...
cfquery datasource="#application.dataSource#"
   SELECT... FROM... WHERE...
/cfquery
/cflock

nesting CFMODULES/CFTRANSACTION - all responses requested!

a few of us are arguing this issue with no resolve, so i'd like everyone on

this piece in particular failed load testing so we're trying to decide why.
if you have a really detailed response, post it to cf-talk. otherwise, save

subject of argument: a page that includes LOADS AND LOADS of nested
CFMODULES.

the page structure includes many, many more layers than the below, but
you'll get the picture quickly:

%% CFTRANSACTION %%

that's about half of the page in question. now

A says: CFMODULE was created to allow pseudo-function processing, allowing
attributes to be passed in and out. Nesting them is proper OO
programming/structure, allowing multiple reusable components, and CF should
be able to handle this level of complexity.

B says: CF was not meant to program as OO and this kind of CF programming is
not scalable -- period. CF _CAN_ handle structure like this, but it is not
proper CF programming for an application under load. Performance should not
be sacrificed for proper OO structure or reusability. Any more than two
levels of a CFMODULE, ESPECIALLY within a cftransaction, is not acceptable.

again, if i get 300 replies to my personal inbox, i would couldn't be
happier (i.e. power in numbers). just please don't clog cf-talk unless you
have a really detailed response.

Oracle... ODBC error messages different than native drivers?

2000-07-18 Thread Mike Amburn

Error messages returned from the Oracle ODBC driver do not provide much
information. For example, the message "invalid argument" doesn't provide any
information about the table or field that causes the error, which is very
helpful in a large join. However, when I plug the query into something like
SQL Plus and run it directly against the database, I get a much better error
message pointing to the offending field.

Which leads me to ask... Would the native driver return a different (or even
better) error message than the Oracle ODBC driver? How exactly does
ColdFusion process database errors?

thanx for any insight

oracle timestamps

when i try to insert Now() into a date/time field, oracle returns with the
error "illegal character". FYI, Now() outputs a timestamp like:
   {ts '/mm/dd hh24/mi/ss'}

stranger yet... all my queries work when i run the application locally on a
workstation with an ODBC connection out to the database. however, the
application refuses to work when i run the application locally on the
database.

the workstations are Win2000, CF 4.5.1 Ent, Oracle 8.1.6.0 ODBC driver
the server is WinNT SP6a, CF 4.5.1 Ent, Oracle 8.1.6.0 ODBC driver

functions are a large reason why i choose lists over arrays most of the
time.

I just ran some tests, and was surprised by the results.

 Caveats:

 1) These are simple looping tests, and only give a general idea of speed.
 YMMV.
 2) Use the most reasonable variable type for the job.
 Converting a list to
an array to use array functions may negate any performance gains you may
see. If you are looking for a value, and you only know its name, use a
 structure.

 The tests:

I created a series of simple loop statements for each variable type:
Queries, Arrays, Structures, and Lists. They were all equivalent to a
2-dimensional array. Each "Set" loop consisted of 5000
 iterations. I then
created another set of loops of 100 iterations to grab some values.

 Summary:

I expected Structures to be fastest, but that honor went to Arrays.
Arrays are followed closely by Queries. Structures were a little slower,
and lists took *forever*. Structures are very powerful, and
 definitely have
performance gains if you are dealing with keys/values, but are not
 inherently faster.

 Results:

 Query Set Time: 3515 ms
 Query Get Time: 10 ms
 --
 --

 Array Set Time: 3174 ms
 Array Get Time: 10 ms
 --
 --

 Struct Set Time: 5368 ms
 Struct Get Time: 20 ms
 --
 --

 List Set Time: 47248 ms
 List Get Time: 711 ms

If anybody wants to see the test code, let me know and I'll mail
 it offlist.
If anybody else has done any testing, I would like to see those results as
 well.

RE: How to secure PDF file? -- settle down or go away

2000-05-10 Thread Mike Amburn

directly from the CF-Talk guidelines (http://www.houseoffusion.com/):

"Please DO post your succinct questions and answers, announcements about
events, products, and job opportunities and your input on discussions of
workplace issues. As long as the topic is ColdFusion-related, and your TOPIC
clearly defined in your SUBJECT line, it is acceptable ..."

the poster is developing a website using ColdFusion and wanted to know how
to secure PDFs within the website. that's about as on-topic as it gets.

personally, i don't give a flip whether you retract it or not. those are the
guidelines that the list was created upon. if you don't like them, then go
create your own special list full of expert developers that only ask
important, really-really-really-CF-related questions. but you have no
foundation to flame people who post according to the guidelines just because
you don't think their information isn't useful to you. this is not an
elitist list, and if you think it's supposed to be, you need to go read the
guidelines.

again i suggest you either settle down or go away.

I disagree. People are going to stop reading the list if it is so deluged
with off-topic and dumb questions that the real questions that are related
to CF are lost in the flood. Someone asked yesterday how to make CF make
text blink in Netscape. People ask how to make CF control other frames in
browsers. People ask all sorts of questions about "how do I get CF to do
x" where x is a totally un-CF-related topic and had the posessed the
most basic knowledge of web development, they'd have known it.

There comes a time when people need to posess at least a basic
 knowledge of
the technologies they are working with, and this is gained by
 RTFM, taking a
 class, etc.

I will not retract my statement. Perhaps you enjoy sifting
 through hundreds
of such dumb questions daily but I do get tired of it.

My "flame" was posted as politely as I could muster.

database vs. directory server

2000-05-05 Thread Mike Amburn

every application i've worked with in the past stored user information
within database tables: get user name from the "user" table, and so on.
however, as distributed architectures seem to becoming more and more
integrated with application servers, i've wondered how something like LDAP
plays into managing user information. it seems having a directory server
manage user information across multiple applications in an open architecture
is more appealing than using proprietary database tables.

is anyone using a directory server (via LDAP) to store user information? if
so, are you sharing the directory server with other applications or
networks?

is anyone using a directory server to authenticate users?

what basic advantages does a directory server offer a CF-based application?
disadvantages?

thanx to any replies.

commenting a processing hog???

2000-04-19 Thread Mike Amburn

in the past, we encouraged developers to comment their code as often as
possible. however, after running a few tests between a page with a lot
(20-30 lines of comments) of comments aginst the same page without the
comments, the performance of the latter is about a 100% gain.

i was under the impression that you could add as many lines of comment as
you wanted without affecting performance at all. is this incorrect?

There shouldn't be, although from a readability perspective it's probably
not too helpful to reuse variable names even within different scopes. What
 happens when you try it?

the weirdest thing... i have three applications with the same lines of code
in each application.cfm. the first two applications had no problem. the
third application would crash every page load whining that it couldn’t
assign a “symbol” to the application variable. after a scratching my head
for half an hour, we restarted the CF service and had no further problem.

FW: WINDOWS 2000 SERVER LIMITED TO 51 IP ADDRESSES

2000-04-05 Thread Mike Amburn

FYI

-Original Message-
Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2000 3:15 PM
Subject: FYI* WINDOWS 2000 SERVER LIMITED TO 51 IP ADDRESSES

* WINDOWS 2000 SERVER LIMITED TO 51 IP ADDRESSES
A bug in Windows 2000 (Win2K) prevents it from using more than 51 IP
addresses, a major flaw for anyone hoping to use the new OS to host
multiple Web sites. A variety of independent labs eventually confirmed
the bug, which Microsoft originally ignored. As of today, Microsoft has
confirmed it. The bug affects Win2K server-class machines that have
been configured as domain controllers: Once the 52nd IP address is
added, all domain-related activities quit operating properly until the
IP is removed--and the machine is incapable of authenticating users or
administering the network.
Although only a relatively small number of machines will need to
provide Active Directory (AD)-based DNS services and more than 51 IP
addresses simultaneously (Microsoft recommends that large-scale
production Web servers not host AD as well), this Win2K limitation will
likely cause some of the company's largest customers serious problems.
And Web servers aren't the only reason one would need to allocate such
a large number of IP addresses from a single Win2K machine: BugNet,
which first verified the bug after Microsoft ignored it, says that mail
servers and Application Service Providers (ASPs) often need this
feature.
"Microsoft would not likely produce a hotfix for this, given that
none of our customers have reported the issue," a Microsoft
spokesperson told BugNet. "If a customer does report this, however, we
will take it very seriously." Despite the comment, expect a hotfix in
the coming days. The fix will also be included in Service Pack 1 (SP1)
for Win2K.
I'll be interviewing one of the people who discovered this bug this
week so stay tuned. In the meantime, see Microsoft's belated response.

our system admin has said before that the NT service packs are not 100%
backward complete. so you have to install SP3, option pack, SP4 (for option

There are a few things you can do:

 3) deselect read permission for *.cfm files
 4) one list member suggested once to do the following mapping:
  *.cfm::$DATA to iscf.dll

Thanks Marius, I have done this after much searching on M/soft

they certainly do not refer to it being required on 6 , 6a or 6a revised.

I can not understand why this reappears at the issue of every new

Windows 2000 allows you to encrypt files. ColdFusion does not seem to
support this, as I get the following error on any page that I encrypt:

The template file exists, however, it either cannot be opened for reading,
