I posted this but it hasn't been published:

It’s hardly fair to post a set of performance benchmarks without full open
disclosure, including everything needed to reproduce the test results.

Please post all this and I can promise you the CF team will respond (I run it).

Thanks!

Re: JReport anyone?

2007-04-25 Thread dcooper
Hmmm..how do you create reports without access to the database? As far as RDS
access goes, it's just HTTP over port 80, so firewall stuff shouldn't be a
concern (don't know if that is for you or not).

In CF8 you'll have RDS Sanboxing (limit DSN and file access to a sandbos per
user/group) and per-user Admin access, so this can be properly locked down,
while using the Query Builder portion of Report Builder.

Having said all that...you can aboslutely run CF Report Builder and create
reports without RDS access...you just don't use the Query Builder. Just tell
the end user the schema of the query(ies) you're going to feed the report at
runtime, and you're good to go.

RDS-free.

For CF7 & SMS info: start here. Lots of campuses can use this, and in the case
of the shootings last week, had a warning system bee in place it, could have
saved lives.

The Event Gateway architecture in CF7 is very, very fast, scalable and is
carrier certified (passed all SMPP provider Cigular/ATT Wireless certification
tests). You can run American Idol on it, it's that fast and resilient, and you
can notify your entire campus in seconds.

Re: FlashPaper vs PDF

2006-10-05 Thread dcooper
Actuall, JD, ColdFusion dynamically generates both PDF and FlashPaper SWF
output for CF reports and CFDOCUMENT (and reports also outputs Excel and RTF,
etc as well).

While you are correct that the "FlashPaper" product used a printer-driver
technology, we chose a different route that yields super-high quality fonts,
etc natively as a Flex app would, directly aseembling the documents ourselves,
without using the proiblematic "printer driver" approach.

The FlashPaper 2 output you get as a result (espcially with the latest
FlashPlayer 9 player) is very, very, good and very lightweight.

Re: CF 8 feature survey

2006-07-30 Thread dcooper
This is detailed in the 7.0.2 FAQ, but since many folks don't read docs
anymore :)

That's correct: download or buy CF7 (online or CD/box) and you'll now get the
7.0.2 full installer. CF 7.0.0 is no longer available for sale or download
(except perhaps in older box copies in stock in retail channels).

1) Folks running 7.0.1 download the 7.0.2 Updater Kit.
2) Folks doing new installs of CF7 should get the Full Kit (they're 7.0.2).

Folks who are still running CF 7.0.0 either first update to 7.0.1, then 7.0.2
OR (in the case of non-JRun J2EE installs, for example), follow the instrutions
in the 7.0.2 Install Instructions to backup settings, undeploy, install/deploy
7.0.2 Full Kits and restire settings.

Folks, we include security fixes in these releases that are needed to protect
you and help keep your sites safe from actack.

Please let anyone you know running old versions of CF to visit the CF update
page and get current as a matter of best practice.

Re: Low-tech asychronous call to ColdFusion

2006-07-20 Thread dcooper
FYI, just doing some testing on these tags (cfthread and cfjoin) and I hope to
have them posted on my blog today or tomorow. They'l require CF7, but Standard
Edition is fine (Enterprise not required).

Using the these tags with CF7 won't give you the thread pooling and other
fine-grained control, such as the number of dedicated threads for processing,
etc that you get with the Async Gateway and Event Gateway architecture, but
hopefully they'll still be useful.

Glad to see our developers used their plane ride back from CFUNITED
constructively :)

Re: CFReport performance

2006-07-19 Thread dcooper
How big are the PDF's (MB and # pages)? You could possibly be memory bound if
they're very large and you could ease that by increasing MAXMEM, etc. One
minute (60,000 milliseconds) per PDF is a very, very long time...somethings
definitely not right there.

Are these batched (ie one request sequentially generating 100 PDFs)? If there
are no or minimal interdependencies, and the large per-report time is needed
(whatever it could be doing for a minute I don't know), but you could also look
at using the CFML Async Gateway to run multiple batches (say 10 PDF's each) in
parallel (be sure to bump up the "Maximun number of Report Threads" that
ColdFusion can use to process report requests AND the Event Gateway Processing
Threads in the in the Admin.

Also what are the specs on the machine? And (probably most importantly), what
is the processing time of a very simple PDF with one qeury row from the same
DSN, etc for comparison? Anything especially complex about these reports (ie
many subreports, across 500 pages, etc?)

Re: Low-tech asychronous call to ColdFusion

2006-07-18 Thread dcooper
I should add:

1) This was built by one of our developers in his personal time, so it'd be
unsupported by us officially, etc, but we'll see if it makes sense to post on
something like the Adobe Exchange, etc, and/or roll into the product in a
future update.

2) Customers using CF7 Enterprise have this capability now with the Async
Gateway, but this might be a nice add-on to simplify things.

Re: 7.02 BUG - getBaseTemplatePath() and CFCs / Web Services

2006-07-14 Thread dcooper
Confirmed (and undesired) change in behavior in 7.0.2:

When getBaseTemplatePath() is inside a CFC, it always returns the file system
path for the CFC file itself, on both CFMX 7.01 and CFMX 7.02. The output is
the same whether it the CFC is called as a webservice or not.

The change in behavior between 7.01 and 7.02 is that when the Application.cfm
sets a request variable equal to getBaseTemplatePath() and that variable is
returned from a CFC function, the result is that in 7.01 the CFC file system
path is returned but in 7.02 the Application.cfm path is returned.

We'll see what we can do for a hotfix.

Thanks for reporting!

2006-06-28 Thread dcooper
The installer checks to verify that CF 7.0.1 is installed. It's a requirement
for the "update" installers.

There's also a "full" installer available if you're not running Server or
"Multi-srever" configs in a J2EE deployment scenario. See the Release Notes
for more details.

(If you are running CF 7.0.0 in multi-server mode, you can first run the CF
7.0.1 Updater, then the CF 7.0.2 Updater, or uninstall/reinstall the full CF
7.0.2 kits.)

Re: SMS Gateway won't start

2006-06-15 Thread dcooper
Do you hae the SMSC Test Server running (start from the Admin)?

The SMS Gateway needs to bind to an SMSC server that talks SMPP.

The test SMS Phone Client (Java app launched from your ColdFusion start menu)
then talks to the SMSC Test Server as well.

So the order is:

1) Start the SMSC Server fro the CF Admin
2) Start the SMS Gateway that talks to the SMSC Server
3) Start the SMS Phone Simulator

Re: More CRUD

2006-06-10 Thread dcooper
FYI, the new CF Eclipse plugins (for use with FlexBuilder 2) use RDS and
generate both ActiveRecord and DAO-style CFC's for virtually any CF-registered
DB datasource.

The resulting CFC code can be used independantly of the front end, although we
generate the full Flex 2 front end app for you as well. But you can just as
easily use the backend CFC's and write your CFML/HTML app as usual.

Available on labs, and all you need is Eclipse installed.

Re: cflogin and load balancing

2006-05-24 Thread dcooper
Just to complete this thread, since it's been linked to by several folks:

One customer in particular had issues ad we walked them through their code
issues. In particular, the following problems were found that prevented
CFLOGIN working in a clustered environment:

- There are nested cflogin tags.
Resolution: Remove the cflogin code in login.cfm

- CFLoginUser is not executed in onRequestStart.
Resolution: do user validation in onRequestStart instead of in login.cfm

- Checking a session variable (which is replicated in a cluster) to decide if
login code should be executed.
Resolution: Don’t do this; always check if the cflogin scope exists (see docs
and sample code).

Here is some example code, note that this is onRequest, not onRequestStart.
Either will work.

select u.userid
from users u
where username =
and password =

For more sample CFLOGIN code, see the CF Developers Guide:

CF/Flex 2 OO/MVC/RIA/RAD Wizard = Your First Flex 2 App

2006-05-18 Thread dcooper
http://www.dcooper.org for an intro and a screencast demo by the CF team.

If you ever wanted to get into RIA's as a CF developer but didn't think it was
for you, or thought the on-ramp was too steep, check this out.

You are guaranteed to have your first CF-powered, OO, MVC, Asynchronous,
Hyper-RAD, ActiveRecord/CRUD, Event-Driven Flex 2 Flash 9 application created,
against YOUR DB, and have it up and running with validation, edit masking,
lookups, select lookup-dropdowns, with best-practice code and working in an
Internet environment (so people don't overwrite each others code IN LESS THAN
10 MINUTES.

Just install CF 7.0.2 + FlexBuilder + Plugins installed and follow the Wizard
instructions.

(And then you can show your boss and take the rest of the month off.)

Enjoy.

Re: SMS in Canada?

2006-05-16 Thread dcooper
One-way SMS can be accomplished by email in most cases (a little clunky, and I
woldn't build a production app like this, but it can be done for demonstration
purposes).

Two-way interactive SMS (or high-volume) needs either a specialized web service
API from an aggregator (aggregator-specific), or the use of an SMS gateway
talking the SMPP protocol (what wireless carriers use to transfer SMS messages
between themselves, and used by high-end TV voting apps, etc).

CF7 ships with a two-way, wireless carrier-certified SMPP Gateway.
See the Chapter 40-44 of the CF Deveopers' Guide for more info.

Re: What is High-Performance in the statement High-Performance Reporting and Document Generation

2006-05-08 Thread dcooper
Correct: Enterprise Edition takes out all all the stops...(and kicks butt
compared to Crystal and other "Enterprise Class" Java-based reporting engine
report generation, in our internal tests prior to CF7 ship).

Standard Edition is effectively single-threaded for doc and report generation.
Any more than a couple simultanous docs or reports and you start to feel it.

Re: CF Mystic Beta 2 Now Available

2006-03-21 Thread dcooper
The Beta 2 installer is good for Windows "Option #1" and "Option #2" installs -
(ColdFusion Server or ColdFusion Multi-Server configurations).

It will not work for J2EE (even with JRun) with a manually-deployed cfusion.war
or cfusion.ear file.

We'll try to have something put together for J2EE and non-Windows configs for
Beta 3.

CF Mystic Beta 2 Now Available

2006-03-21 Thread dcooper
The ColdFusion/Flex Connectivity ("Mystic") Beta 2 has been released (along
with Flex 2 Beta 2) and is now available for download on the Adobe "Labs" site
here: http://labs.adobe.com.

The ColdFusion/Flex Connectivity Beta 2 release represents an important
milestone for ColdFusion customers wanting to build Rich Internet Applications
with Flex and ColdFusion.

With this release, not only have we improved the previously delivered support
for the Flash Remoting Update and the Flex Asynchronous Messaging Gateway,
we've also added support for Flex Data Services 2.0 and included the first of a
set of Flex Builder plug-ins for ColdFusion developers that can dramatically
improve development productivity for some key coding tasks when you are
building ColdFusion-powered Flex applications.

We're excited about Beta 2, and grateful for your participation.

I believe ColdFusion + Flex 2 will empower you to quickly and easily create
amazing new Rich Internet Applications faster and easier than with any other
technology, anywhere. And there's more to come...we're not done yet!

Of course, we recommend that you install Mystic Beta 2 on development and
testing servers only at this point, but I'd encourage everyone to take Flex 2
Beta 2 and CF Mystic Beta 2 for a spin.

PS: Using Flex Builder 2, then adding CFEclipse and the Mystic Flex Builder
plugins will make for a very productive environment, and will let you use RDS
and the CF Query Builder for your FB/CFEclipse development!

Please visit the Labs site for more information about this beta release, to
interact directly with ColdFusion engineering and quality assurance engineers
and other ColdFusion/Flex Connectivity beta 2 users, and to access the
ColdFusion/Flex Connectivity Beta 2 Bug Tracker.

FYI, the CF Flex 2 Adapter Alpha bits have (as of now) been updated on the MM
Labs site here: http://labs.macromedia.com/wiki/index.php/CF_Adapter

This "0.3" update alows the CF/Flex 2 Adapter to work well with the ColdFusion

To clarify: the hotfix is good, but the CF/Flex 2 Adapter uses an older copy of
a class that's included in the hotfix, which causes a web service issue when
they're both installed right now. We'll update the CF/Flex 2 Adapter with the

Yes, sorry about that. We chose the "one-off hotfix" method to deliver the Flex
2 Adapter Alpha, and could probably have done something more sophisticated with
more time.

For now, yes, everything should be good to go as you are.

The general plan is to have the Flex 2 Adapter made part of the product going
forward, so it'll be a baked-in part of the bits in the future.

Correct, you can enter your CF7 serial during install or post-install via the
Admin.

The latest downloadable CF7 bits are 7.0.1. You can apply the CHF1 for CFMX
7.0.1 to that install also via the Admin on the System Information page (click
the "Update" button).

Re: Benefits of Upgrading to MX6.1 or MX7

2005-10-11 Thread dcooper
Performance and scalability is significantly enhanced in CFMX 6.1 and CFMX7
than CF5 or previous. This can translate into direct HW savings for large
sites.

Details here for CF5 vs CFMX 6.1 (CFMX7 adds a few more points on top of CFMX
6.1):

http://www.macromedia.com/software/coldfusion/whitepapers/pdf/6_1/cfmx61_performancebrief.pdf

(Watch the wrap)

Here's the "Statistics Summary" from the testing performed in the whitepaper:

• Windows 2000: Approximately 23 times faster than ColdFusion 4.5, 3 times
faster than ColdFusion 5, and 2.5 times faster than ColdFusion MX
• Windows 2003: Approximately 3 times faster than ColdFusion 5
• Linux: Approximately 5 times faster than ColdFusion 5
• Solaris: Approximately 4 times faster than ColdFusion 5

Re: Cfdocument hangs

2005-10-07 Thread dcooper
Please contact me offline with an example and we can take a look. For VREY
large documents, CFDOCUMENT can be memory intensive for sure.

Increasing the MAX Heap Size in the CF Admin can help if you're on the edge
(Java VM's still don't behave all that well under out-of-memory conditions,
even years into the implementation.)

Welcome to Merrimack: An Even Better ColdFusion MX 7

2005-09-28 Thread dcooper
FYI, Macromedia has released Merrimack (the code name for the latest version of
ColdFusion, v7.0.1) which extends platform support and refines several of the
new features in ColdFusion MX 7. This new release builds upon the success of
ColdFusion MX 7 and adds "polish" to what has proven to be a really incredible
ColdFusion release.

Get an introduction to Merrimack in the http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/logged_in/dcooper_merrimack.html";
target=_blank>"Welcome to Merrimack: An Even Better ColdFusion MX 7" DevNet
article.

I'd like to especially extend a special "Welcome!" to Apple Mac OS X customers!
Sorry it took so long, but I think this ColdFusion release is truly the
perfect combination of Power, Productivity and Polish you've come to love and
expect from this excellent platform.

To all of the many Merrimack Beta testers, "Thank you!" Once again you've
helped produce a great release (and kept us on our toes!)

To everyone, welcome to the best release of ColdFusion ever!

Check out the following details for more information on the ColdFusion MX 7
Updater (7.0.1):

fyi, here's a simple little business card designer we ship this as a simple
sample app with ColdFuison 7 (done with simple Flash Forms):

http://www.macromedia.com/examples/cfgettingstarted/experience/snippets/Tags/cfform/examples/Business%20Card%20Wizard/index.cfm?locale=en

It's in the Snippets Explorer if you installed Sample Apps and the "Getting

Re: Event Gatways: session scope?

2005-08-26 Thread dcooper
Yes, both session scope and client variables are available to you in Event
Gateway apps, including the IM gateways as well.

Check out Chapter 44-48 in the Developing Apps book for an excellent tour and
walkthrough of building Event Gateway apps. Good stuff and well worth the read.

Just enable session variables and/or client variables in your app as you would
for a web app and things should work fine.

Re: Coldfusion7 CFDocument error

2005-08-22 Thread dcooper
Yes, currently CFDCOUMENT doesn't support rendering SWF's, ActiveX's or Java
Applets. It's an enhancement request we have received, though and we'll
consider for the future.

If there's anyway to get the first frame of your SWF movie (or your diagram)
rendered to an image (bytes or file), you could include that in your document
just fine, and that might be the way to go.

Can the diagram be output as an image?

Re: mx 6.1 & 7

2005-08-09 Thread dcooper
Sure, you could do that. If you'd like CFMX7 to pick up your CF5 or CFMX6.x
settings, then installing CFMX7 last makes that easy.

You could also have diff web server instances/sites configured to point at
different CF versions.

Or you could use the built-in JWS if you like.

Re: MM and CFEclipse

2005-08-02 Thread dcooper
:) yikes..all this talk of weapons and arsenals, I thought I'd repeat what we
actually said at the conference:

We're signed up to be yet another contributor to the CFEclipse project. That's
pretty much it. Just like the CF team helps support CF development in
HomeSite+ and DW, we think it makes sense to help developers wanting to develop
in CFEclipse have a good experience as well. There's stuff we think we might be
able to help out with that would be difficult to do properly without us, and we
want folks to have a good development experience with CFEclipse and CF, for
sure.

If you look longer term, we've already said Zorn will be Eclipse-based, so it
might also makes sense that the CF team would be interested in helping make
sure that if you're using an Eclipse-based environment for Zorn work, for
example, you have a good development environment to build Zorn/CF apps in one
space.

Again, though, we're just helping out...we don't want to own or run the
CFEclipse project, and I think the folks running the project would tell you the
same: we've been very respectful of their ownership of the project, and our
position as a contributor. We have helped come up with some ideas and
suggestions, but not any more or less than I think any other contributor has.
We also bring to the table some of our know-how in supporting various editors
for CF development, we're pretty good at writing specs, managing projects,
delivering quality code, etc, so hopefully we can help make CFEclipse better
through our participation. That's really the only goal.

We’ve already started the process of identifying the features that are most
wanted/needed that we can uniquely help out with, and hopefully you’ll see
some of this become more discussed in the next few weeks as we flush some of
this out.

These should be fixed addressed in the Merrimack release. Ping me offline if

Can CFMX 6.1 and CFMX 7 co-exist?

2005-06-22 Thread dcooper
Yes, CFMX7 was designed to co-exist peacefully with CFMX 6.1 and CF5.

When you install CFMX7, if asked (UNIX), just point to your previous config and
we'll copy/migrate your CF5 or CFMX6.1 settings into the new CFMX7 installation
for you (the post-install wizard that runs the first time you log into the CF
Administrator does this work).

The one caveat is with the web server connectors. When installing and
co-existence with a previous version is your goal, it's probably a good idea to
chose the "integrated development web server" option during installation so
your previous version's web server connectors are not replaced and still route
".CFM" calls to the older version. Unless, of course, you know you want to
configure-and-go with CFMX7 right away.

You can always run "wsconfig" (Web Server config utility) from the
{cfusion}\bin directory later and configure your web servers, and use the
integrated web server (on default port 8500) for development and testing until
you're ready to configure your web server with CFMX7.

RE: HTML to PDF

2005-06-16 Thread dcooper
If you have a repro case, BTW, shoot it at me offline and I'd like to check it
out.

But for manual breaking, the idea is you'll want use cfdocumentitem
type="pagebreak" in your cfloop or whatever you're using after closing the
table tag, then re-open the table tag after the page break.

How dynamic the amount of data is that's being output in a particular doc table
(affecting table row height), affects the amount of work required to close the
table by page end and startup with a new table after issuing a page break.

The simplest case, of course, is if you have a case where table row heights
don't vary wildly, and you can simply row-count and issue a page break after
"N" rows.

Embedded tables, etc can add complexity of course.

Automatically closing open tables at page break time and reprinting headers is
on our enhancement list as well (#59306), but didn't make it into CFMX7 (maybe
next time :)

RE: HTML to PDF

2005-06-16 Thread dcooper
For that matter, actual browsers themseleves have some differences in
implementation and rendering complex table layouts and CSS.

For the most part, the I think you'll find the HTML 4.01 and CSS 1 and 2
support is very good in CFDOCUMENT and far more complete than any other
solution, IMO.

RE: HTML to PDF

2005-06-16 Thread dcooper
Here's the answer to this one: what you're seeing is the rendering of the
iFrame contents only. If you remove the embedded iframe from this page, it
renders fine.

Support for iFrames is enhancement request #54932, FYI.

RE: HTML to PDF

2005-06-15 Thread dcooper
Yeah, tracking row counts in table rendering sometimes is an imprecise science,
but I've seen it done with good results. It's a little discocerting for users
to split onto a new page without new headers re-rendered on printed copy
anyway, so oming up with a counter, ending the tabel and re-starting the table
on the next page is probably a good thing to do for the best user experience
anyway.

Perhaps someone here could share their code with splitting tables at page
breaks...

RE: HTML to PDF

2005-06-15 Thread dcooper
You'll want to make sure you have resolveURL set for the CFHTTP call, that you
have background images enabled for CFDOCUMENT, and watch the iframes on that
page. I'll take a look at the result of this page in CFDOC later today, but
those are a few tings I can think of off the top of my head. Also, if you're
going after images or other assets from behind a proxy, you need to setup CFDOC
to know about it to traverse the proxy on the way to resolving the assets.

I'll post back ater today...

RE: HTML to PDF

2005-06-14 Thread dcooper
Hmmm...this could be a known issue where if a table cell extends across pages,
long text or images in that table cell can get cut off if CFDOC is doing
auto-page breaking. It's on our radar to look at in the future, as is table
header cell auto-duplication across pages when page breaks are encountered
before a table is closed.

The workaround can be to do the break using the CFDOC subtags, and things
should render properly.

asynch cfml gateway - working example

Here's a quick example of using the Asynchronous CFML Gateway that is setup to
demonstrate a 100X performance improvement (from a user's perspective) vs
synchronous CFML execution for long-running tasks that can be run in parallel.

Hope that helps (watch the URL wrap):

CF Precompilation filenames

2005-05-31 Thread dcooper
FYI, with CFMX7, code can be precompiled from command prompt or via a checkbox
option in the Administrator when building and deploying standalone J2EE WAR/EAR
files.

Also note that (as of CFMX 6.1) we no longer compile to an intermediate Java
source step before generating Java bytecode. We now parse, complile and
generate Java bytecode directly from CFML for additional comple-time
performance and super-efficient Java bytecode, resulting in improved runtime
performance.

async gateway issue

2005-04-30 Thread dcooper
This simple example demonstrates how to spawn and run many long-running tasks
simultaneously using the Async CFML Gateway from a regular CFML web page, and
creates a "synchronization point" in the CFML page that waits for all threads
to complete before continuing.

Communication between threads in this example is done using Server variables
(with CFLOCK).

No, the "default value" is in effect if you do nothing, so requests will get
killed off when the Request Timeout expires, just like with CFM requests
processed via the web server.
