I like the full version of Outlook... has a lot of "extras" that I use a lot
(calendar, etc...).

What kind of mail server are you trying to connect to? I have never had any
problems with Eudora or Outlook Express, perhaps you could tell a bit more
info... maybe you are overlooking something.

Anyone know of any good free email clients? I tried Eudora and Nutscrape.
Eudora croaks when trying to import Outlook Express mailboxes, and Nutscrape
will not connect to my outgoing server.

Thanks,

Re: Free Mail Clients

2004-02-08 Thread Bruce Sorge
Outlook Office 2003 is a bit bloated and I do not need all of the features it offers, and Outlook express is just getting bigger as well. I am connecting to my own mail server using Argosoft's mail server application. I have no problem connecting to it with Outlook, Outlook Express or Eudora. It is Netscape that will not connect to the outgoing service. Eudora was my first choice but it has two things that I do not like.
1. You have to have separate mailboxes for each account (I have about 5 accounts, and for that matter Netscape has that issue to)
2. Every time I tried to import my internet accounts from Outlook Express, it choked).

Thanks,

Bruce

The Bat! (http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/) is not free, but
it's very inexpensive, lightweight, and highly configurable.

Then you won't like Thunderbird either.

If you just mean the messages, upload them to an IMAP server and
download them in the new client.

Not entirely true with regard to Thunderbird. I didn't like that for a
couple of minutes at first either. But then I realized that it was just
a simple matter of adding a rule for all incoming mail to drop it into
my local folders inbox...problem solved. Likewise, if you prefer to sort
some mail into other folders (cf-talk, etc.) just add a rule for that
like any other mail client and place the catchall filtering rule as the
last to be applied.

There are downsides to that.

Email clients have been debated quite a bit over the last few
weeks at cf-community. Maybe we should continue the discussion there:

Pegasus Mail is free and works well if you run Windows.

Not sure what you mean about Eudora having separate mailboxes for each
account.   It may be possible I misunderstand you.

I currently have Eudora set up to check 10 different email accounts.  You
can set up different accounts using the "personalities" feature.  All mail
comes into the same inbox (unless filters move it elsewhere) with no
distinction between which email account is which.

One thing I like about Eudora is that I can set my own mail directory,
which includes all my preferences ( including the 10 accounts).  I share
that drive and can access my mail from all computers on my network (which
comes in handy on occasion).  It also makes backing up and restoring
easier.  I doubt this is unique to Eudora, but it is nice.
