|I haven't used hmail, but it is supported by HELM, which is a windows |only control panel. So I don't think there are any PHP requirements. I can definately vouch for hMailServer, a very good product, easy to install and run. Supports IMAP too, which not all other free servers does. No requirements at all for PHP, unless you need remote administration (otherwise admining is done through a GUI on the server, which you may be able to access through VNC/terminal services). I am actually running php on that machine, for SquirrelMail, but i didn't manage to get the remote admin thing running (didn't spend much energy on it). The licenses are NOT intended for personal use, hosting customers applications, or installing on customer sites. So, if you put any of this software into production your are violating your license. As an aside, you also need to be a level 3 Registered Member of the Microsoft Partner Program, which undoubtedly costs more money. Andy you are incorrect on all counts. There is no additonal cost other than the cost of the action pack. I know because we have 2 subscriptions. There is nothing stopping you using any of the software within the pack for personal use. In fact it would be rather impossible to use any of it for development without doing that as you have to install it. The pack comes with 10 installs of Windows XP for your office for instance. Also you will note that the original post stated it was for his own use, and the fact that he is on this list means he is a developer and thus officially he would be using it for development anyway. POP before SMTP is a way of authenticating an SMTP session. Basically, if the user can sucessfully POP mail from the server, the mail server would then let them send mail through it. Other methods of allowing mail relaying would typically be SMTP-Authentication (username password required to send - useful if your clients don't all have POP accounts on the server) and via IP rules. If anyone on this list is ever looking for a non-Windows mail server configuration, check out Inter7.com. They do full installations of a modified qmail systems on any flavor of *nix for a couple hundred dollars remotely. We've had them build several mail servers that are all very well setup. As an aside, the text above doesn't make it clear if the software is for internal business purposes (comma) and [any] app development and testing or internal business purposes and [internal] app development and testing. That's a huge assumption -- and doesn't meet the legal definitions necessarily if MS got uppity about it. Does it cover me working on a laptop at a coffee shop developing an app for a client? Does it cover me using a VMWare instance on my laptop when I'm at a client site trying to troubleshoot a problem on a server? There's a *lot* of gray that can get you burned if you play fast and loose with licenses. Regardless about your *beliefs* about what's ok, you need to be a little careful if you're in a scenario where you have the potential to get a visit from the software license police. The free programme does not require any level of proven MS expertise. The AP software is licensed for in house use, not just for development and testing. The AP contents can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/uk/partner/sales_and_marketing/actionpack/contents. aspx Having used the programme many years ago, I wish I'd remembered it a few months ago when I went out and paid for mail server (paid for software *gasp*), and the 2003 Server would be pretty useful, too. As far as running MS Exchange it's really no more complicated than any other SMTP server. Yes, there are tons of features there you would probably never use, but to set up basic smtp and domains is not so difficult - and you always have the extra functionality if you need it in the future. I'll second X-Mail, although setting it up isn't a matter of cliking Run|Next|Next|Finish. It does just about everything you could want, but there is a bit of a learning curve before you can create a base configuration. I would still recommend it, though. The only thing it doesn't do is IMAP, but you can link it with an IMAP server on *nix if you like. I have used XMail when I needed a free mail server and it seems to work very well. I guess it depends on your workflow...I'm a one-man shop, one server...used to develop on my workstation, now I just use development domains on the production server for development and testing...saves time and doesn't require installing CF, et al on my workstation. I use MySQL exclusively, so don't have any need to use MSSQL at this point. Getting into a lot of MS software I won't use in production will just take a lot of time for no benefit that I can see... You are right on. There are a bunch of bunch of manual configuration steps to deal with, but in all fairness there are tools that automate most of it. I would be happy to send you my working baseline configuration files if you want to try it. Thanks, Rob, but I think at this point I'd be better off paying $88 for a full, easy to install and configure email server and be able to spend time on developing sites. I just got an email from a client wondering how much longer it was going to take to get their site done...clients... always pushing speed ahead of quality...sacrificing long-term benefit for short term gain... For sending out mail (SMTP) the SMTP server that comes with 2003 should do the job, no? I believe that SmarterMail is also free for a single domain (it's both an SMTP and POP/IMAP server). Hi, Kevin... I've been running the free version of SmarterMail, which supports only one domain and want to be able to send mail from multiple domains, but that requires the $200 version of SmarterMail. I went and checked out hMailServer on the website, and while it looks good from the MySQL side, which I use, I see a lot of talk about PHP in the forums, which I don't use... Is hMailServer easy to use? Someone said in an answer on the forum that one user should install PHP...is that software that has to be installed to process PHP code? Perhaps I would save myself a lot of headaches and time by just buying SmarterMail or going with MailEnable, which supports multiple domains in the free standard version? Thanks, Dave (and now Bryan)... I guessed the domain and went straight to it, but thought I'd ask Bryan to encourage the dialogue... ;o) Now...about ArgoSoft... I see in the version comparison chart that all versions do support multiple domains...that's good...really all I need to do is to be able to send email using clients' mailing lists which I have in MySQL when they send out newsletters, announcements, etc. SmarterMail (free) doesn't allow me to send email using another domain name. I notice the free version doesn't run as a service...does that mean I have to manually enable the program every time the computer is rebooted? I haven't used hmail, but it is supported by HELM, which is a windows only control panel. Hello, Matt... Are you referring to iMS-Lite? (Their comparison chart says that the developer edition of iMS-SE is the only one that's free...) Is that just for sending email from multiple domains? It's not a full-scale email server...is it? My client's email addresses are forwarded addresses to their ISP POP accounts...I don't handle their POP accounts, but I do use SmarterMail for my and my family's email. I just need a mail server for my email and to be able to send email from multiple domains for the websites I host... Nope...mine auto-starts (a preference I think)although I do seem to recall a need to login for it to kick into gear (old fuzzy info though...never tested if I recall correctly) I wouldn't like that too much...the server would need to start if Windows 2000 Server just came back to the login screen if power went off and the server came back up following battery backup drainage...have to go to the Plus version ($49) for that feature...which is still ok... However, no IMAP (which I think would be good to have and use) until the Pro version...$88 (US) plus $49 for the IMAP function...hmmm... Getting pricey... All it does is send, which is all I need CF to do on its own. I use iMS as a mail sending engine to keep the load off of the mail server. If you need POP and mailboxes and such, look at hmailserver. Assuming you can get access to relay mail through it (not an automatic with many security setups though). If you think about it from a testing perspective, once your ColdFusion page hands off your email to the /Mail/Spool directory, all of your tasks as a ColdFusion developer are pretty much complete. The fact that it goes out instead of to /Undelvr only shows that your local CF server is configured with a valid mailserver... which tests your dev environment much more than your application per se. And even passing that test does not guarentee that everything is set up properly in the production environment (eg you can verify to a mail server in CF Admin and still get relaying denied when you try to send email). And if your client has AOL or other tools with built-in spam filtering, your tests can *cause* more concerns from sent but not received mail than waiting to test outbound mail til the production environment (SORBS I think is the spam blackhole list that has many, many dynamic IPs I believe -- seen that bounce personal test servers several times). Just some food for thought. The $49 is no problem...just seeing some extra features in the ArgoSoft Pro version that I'd like to have and wondering if other software which costs $137 or less would have all the features I might want to use at some point...list server, autoresponders, Mailbag Domains for domain relay (why would I need domain relay if I can provide full mail service for multiple domains?), IMAP, etc., which only come on the Pro version. I wouldn't use the freeware which won't function as a service. I use it for pop3/imap/smtp server for a small userbase. and smtp for cf server. no real problems. firedaemon is convenient for creating multiple app run as services. I'd like some more web stuff, and will get around to installing squirrelmail/imap as a webclient. Depends how much it has to handle. If you want it easy to setup for low to medium traffic, I'd say go with ArGoSoft Mail Server (free). I'll second this with a slight reservation -- the free version does not run as a service. Of course you could use the Win Server toolkit tools to make it a service, but I'd opt for the $50 version of ArgoSoft that's a little more robust. Otherwise, you have to make sure you log into the server and kick the job off which can be a pain when the server crashes at 3 AM... That said, I have a client who's been using it (the free one) for about a year since their ISP had problems managing their own mail server.
