In a huge coup, my boys at New Atlanta have won a MAJOR deal and are
helping MySpace.com, the fifth most heavily trafficked web site on the
Internet, make the switch from Macromedia ColdFusion 5.0 to New Atlanta's
BlueDragon for .NET. MySpace is easily the largest CFML-based site on
the Internet; to put things into perspective, MySpace has surpassed both
Google and Hotmail in terms of total page views 2and currently handles
more than 18 million members. Who says CFML isn't viable! Woohoo!

The part that caught my eye was that in their testing, MySpace saw a 50%
performance improvement over ColdFusion 5.0 as well as better stability
and performance than even CFMX.

This is a massive win for New Atlanta and further vindication that their
BlueDragon product-line is a more-than-viable (dare I say better)
alternative to Macromedia's ColdFusion server.

Full details of the deal can be found on Vince Bonfanti's blog

http://blog.newatlanta.com

Congratulations New Atlanta!

Re: 5th Most Trafficked Site Switches to BlueDragon

2005-06-28 Thread Barney Boisvert
While I don't doubt that BD may be faster than CFMX, I simply cannot
see BD as a better product. I've found it to have a significantly
higher number of bugs than CFMX, and while many of these bugs wouldn't
affect many developers, they're still bugs, which indicates some kind
of problems in the development process (lack of comprehensive
regression testing, for example). I should also clarifiy by saying
that I've only ever run the standalone (Java-based) server, not the
..NET server, but from my understanding, the two are VERY similar.

So as long as you can dodge the bugs, BD is definitely a candidate.
But I suspect the time spent dodging bugs would more then pay for a
couple extra servers, particularly with developing a large project,
let alone the maintenance phase.

Note that I don't want to be little NA in any way. They're doing a
fantastic job competing in a market that is utterly stacked against
them. And while they do a lot of things I could wish MM to do (be
massively receptive to use feedback, provide a free edition, etc.),
their core product is somewhat inferior in some ways.

cheers,
barneyb

My only concern with this statement is that CFMX 6.1 or 7 would probably
show similar increases over CF 5. Comparing Blue Dragon to CF 5 is kind
of an unfair comparison. Congrats to New Atlanta, and I hope this will
boost some of their efforts and allow them to grow even more, but I just
wanted to point out that the comparison seemed flawed to me.

I don't understand that one either. Did they switch from 5 to BD or
from MX to BD? Also, stability can often be based on the quality of the
coding itself. I'm not saying that BD doesn't offer a better product
than MM or that myspace isn't loving it, I'm just saying that the way it

Re: 5th Most Trafficked Site Switches to BlueDragon

2005-06-28 Thread Charlie Griefer
I don't think it's flaweddepending upon interpretation.

They said that BD ran significantly faster than CF 5.

They also said that it showed better stability and performance than CFMX.

That last part is what's subject to interpretation.

My interpretation is that they evaluated CFMX (and BD) before deciding
upon BD based upon the fact that it showed better stability and
performance.

I'm further inferring that the code used to test/compare was
similar...otherwise you're right, and it's not necessarily a
fair/valid comparison.

Maybe Vince or somebody from NA (if they're at liberty to do so) can
further elaborate on how MySpace.com came to the conclusions that BD
was the better/more stable product.

RE: 5th Most Trafficked Site Switches to BlueDragon

2005-06-28 Thread Vince Bonfanti
MySpace did evaluate CFMX, before BlueDragon even, and found that CFMX
performance and stability didn't match BlueDragon.NET. If you're at
CFUNITED, come to the New Atlanta/MySpace keynote address this Friday
afternoon. Peter Amiri, Director of Technical Operations for MySpace, will
talk in more detail about their decision to go with BlueDragon.

BTW, there are many other companies who have been evaluating and deploying
BlueDragon.NET over the past few months. All consistently tell us that the
performance and reliability are better than CFMX in real-world applications.
In fact, the very first customer to deploy on BlueDragon.NET switched from
CFMX.

My only concern with this statement is that CFMX 6.1 or 7
would probably show similar increases over CF 5. Comparing
Blue Dragon to CF 5 is kind of an unfair comparison.
Congrats to New Atlanta, and I hope this will boost some of

2005-06-28 Thread Kerry
Did they switch from 5 to BD or from MX to BD?
I would assume that they setup test servers for both MX and BD

Also, stability can often be based on the quality of the coding itself
I agree, performance too.

I *assume* that for a benchmark test they would have written some decent
code and then used that, as well as testing their existing site...

I have heard reports from a guy that writes very tight code that his system
runs slower on bd.net than CFMX reliable performance stats are very hard
to nail down...

All of their tests were done using the exact same CFML code in their
production environment. These were real world tests--as real as it
gets--these were not lab benchmarks. (Nobody has a lab that can generate the
kind of traffic they get in production).

 I don't think it's flaweddepending upon interpretation.

They said that BD ran significantly faster than CF 5.

They also said that it showed better stability and
 performance than CFMX.

That last part is what's subject to interpretation.

My interpretation is that they evaluated CFMX (and BD) before
deciding upon BD based upon the fact that it showed better
 stability and performance.

I'm further inferring that the code used to test/compare was
 similar...otherwise you're right, and it's not necessarily a
 fair/valid comparison.

Maybe Vince or somebody from NA (if they're at liberty to do
so) can further elaborate on how MySpace.com came to the
conclusions that BD was the better/more stable product.

Anyone can write a lab benchmark to get any result they want. That's why you
should never trust lab benchmarks, especially from vendors (even New
Atlanta, which is why we never publish any). The MySpace testing was all
done on real-world code in their real-world production environment.

The part that caught my eye was that in their testing,
MySpace saw a 50% performance improvement over ColdFusion
5.0 as well as better stability and performance than even CFMX.

Did they also try CFMX7? Its apparently faster more stable than CFMX
6.x.

I have some serious doubts that it is ranked the #5 most viewed
website. Where is that ranking coming from?

For those not in the know, mySpace is basically liveJournal (a blog)
and Friendster (community/networking) all in one. If you are single
and under the age of 25, you've most likely been on a date with
someone you met on mySpace. I think that is the best way to sum it up.

ALEXA and other traffic ratings [WAS: RE: 5th Most Trafficked Site Switches to BlueDragon]

2005-06-28 Thread Burns, John D
On this topic of ranking the major sites, does anyone have any idea how
Alexa and some of the other listings come up with these rankings? I
have a client of mine who went to alexa and did a search for his domain
and came back telling me that their site is in the X% of the websites in
the world or something like that. The numbers he was giving me were
nuts and didn't match our web server stats at all. Are they getting
these numbers from DNS hits or what? I know we're not giving them our
logs or numbers or anything so I'd be interested to know where they're
coming from. Any ideas?

 John Burns

Well Johnfirst you need a large target on a wallthe center being the
most traffic.then you give a monkey a pail full of big spit balls each
containing the name of a website. The monkey flings the spit balls (monkeys
are good at flinging stuff you know...so they are well suited for this task)
at the wallsand voila! traffic rankings

Perhaps someone has a slightly more scientific outlook on the processbut
I think I've come close in my assessment ;-)

Actually, the teens and stuff are going crazy. I have clients (bands
and such) that will set up a myspace account just because so many of
their fans live on myspace. That's on top of any kind of website we
build them. It's one of those crazy phenomenons like hotornot.com was
back in the day. Something so simple and for some reason the kids flock
to it.

Not at allwhat is it...never heard of it?

Most likely it's something pushed in the media in the USso us
Canucks don't see it unless we go hunting for it.

To be honest I rarely visit any of the top 5 that were listed. eBay is
the only one I actively use.and that's only because it's pretty much
impossible to find freestyle standup jetski parts where I live!!

Enlighten me Ray ;-)

Re: 5th Most Trafficked Site Switches to BlueDragon

2005-06-28 Thread Ken Ferguson
This is one of those things that make you want to place your head on the
ground and get a running start before kicking it across the room. I had
a client with a project VERY SIMILAR to myspace.com a few years ago who
wanted to offer me a substantial share of ownership in return for
building it and I didn't really feel like it was worth getting involved
in. My reluctance was, in part, due to the fact that it was to be a
paid-only site with no free access, but was also due to an overall
skepticism about whether the idea was viable in and of itself. Now I
look back and wonder why I didn't jump all over it and do all I could to
talk the guy into going the free access route. Oh well, who needs
boatloads of cash anyway, right???

My point was that a press release is hardly from an unbiased source,
and therefore I have problems getting excited about what I read in
them. Hell, the company that I work for sends us emails (We're in
the News!), which i get excited about...until I pull up the link and
it's a press release.

Hey, it says we're wonderful! Of course it's going to say we're
wonderful. We wrote it!!! :)
