Re: Big companies using CF

2000-12-09 Thread Alex Aguilar

Actually www.Gomez.com no longer uses CF. They switched over to asp.
Kind of strange because if I remember correctly, the case study that Allaire
had on them discussed how
Gomez had built a lot of their personalization/user tracking engine using
CF.

I need to second Larry on this one.

We built a site here at Ford that is probably THE most high-profile site on
the corporate intranet. This site gets over 30,000 user sessions and 1.2+
million hits a day on average. It runs on NT 4/IIS 4/CF 4.5.1/SQL Server 7.

We had CF4.0 on one machine (Win2K), SQL7 on another Win2K box, and 12 media
servers all Win2K.

4 eastern US
2 central US
3 West coast
1 in Australia
1 in Taiwan
1 in western Europe.

We had between 20,000-25,000 sessions going at any one time. We were not
expecting such an interest.

As you can probably tell, this was an internal webcast. We did have some
problems, but these were not related to CF. Had more to do with the
stream, bandwidth issues.

The live media portion of the site had an embedded media player and slides
from the presentations were pushed out to the users via an admin interface.

We did another one this past Tuesday with the same setup but this one only
had ~15,000 users.

This isn't true. I've developed a very encompassing system for a $200M/year
company with a network of over 2000 dealers and reps. The internal system
gets nearly as much traffic as its web site (both in CF) which is approx. 1M
CF page views a month. Not as much traffic as some sites maybe, but still
fairly high.

In other words, Everything is relative.
Along the same line of reasoning, just because a big company does it. It
does not mean it is a good thing. In my experience the exact opposite is
true. The bigger the company, the more ineffiecient in my experience.
Someone already said this, but I will repeat it. The big difference between
CF and ASP is development time and costs.
Almost any web application could be developed faster in CF than ASP, and CF
has a huge library of built in funtions and free tags that are available.

Not so sure that's a safe assumption to make. Internal sites are frequently
far more data intensive and interactive such that, while actually traffic
volume may be lower, the processing load on a server may be far higher than
a simple Internet site. I agree with the spcific items you suggested asking
about but don't rule out that Intranet/Extranet sites may actually be a
better judge of CF's capabilities in some cases.

RE: Big companies using CF

2000-12-07 Thread Benjamin Fitts

I've been following this thread on big companies using CF for awhile. Sure a
lot of big companies use CF. But please think of the type of application
they use CF for.

Internal sites and extranets don't get a lot of traffic.

Other questions you might want to ask instead of "Which Big Companies use
CF" are:

What do they use CF for?

How much traffic does their site receive? daily, weekly, monthly.

How much of that traffic is hitting dynamic CF generated pages?

This is a much better benchmark for you to judge Cold Fusion on.

A typical example is BMWUSA web site that was mentioned here earlier. I can
guarantee you this site isn't getting hit nearly as much as VW's new film
web site. Just because BMW is a big name doesn't mean it gets a lot of hits
to it's web site. What is a lot of hits? 500,000 unique users a month? 5
million unique users a month? 5 million unique users a day?

RE: Big companies using CF

2000-12-06 Thread Scott, Andrew

Its not only portability, but scalability and RAD and yes the RAD is very
impresive when you know what your doing. A structure of a site, can be
completed in next to no time with CF. Not to mention that the ability to
create matching open and close custom tags creates the ability to do so much
more with the generated content than even ASP can't do. CF might not
have the ability to create custom functions yet, but it makes up with the
above mentioned on tags. the customtag LessWhiteSPace is a good example, or
Ben's DHTMLMenu is another example.

Just to add to Paul's comments..one advantage that CF "currently" has
over ASP is portability to other OS's. That can be a big one for a lot of
companies.

RE: Big companies using CF

2000-12-06 Thread misty . d . woodward

Not to mention an increase in development time with ASP. My first
choice is always CF however, having written what seems like a million
lines of code in ASP, I can tell you the time it takes to write will
increase. One example is using the cfquery tag. You can do it in 3
lines of code, cfquery, sql statements and ending /cfquery tag. In ASP
you have to create the connection object, open the connection database,
sql statements, execute and set up your recordset. Even outputting the
results is a bit longer. Granted these are small examples but hey they
will add up after awhile.

I would of course suggest to really fight for keeping CF but it really
is nice to know both. Who else will be around to convert them nasty ASP
app's?

Misty

P.S. I recently converted an ASP page from 1248 lines of ASP code down
to 890 lines of CF code. I would take CF over ASP any day.

Not to mention that if you want to run your ASP code on anything other
than
a Windows machine, you have to buy additional application server
software
that costs anywhere from $700 - $7,000. Also, the learning curve of ASP
is
a little higher and so it might cost more to train a new ASP developer.
I
figure it probably all evens out in the end.

My advice would be to learn both if you can. It never hurts.

I know this is probably one of those discussions that turn up all the
time
on a mailing list such as this, and I apologize for bringing it up. I
have
a new IT Director starting at my company in the very near future who's a
big
Microsoft fan, and thinks there's nothing better than ASP and/or C#
(which I
believe hasn't even been released yet, no?).

When I told him that CF has been around for a long time, and some really
big
companies use it, he doubted it. I told him Amazon.com was using it
(was I
right about this?).

So anyway, I've agreed to compile a list of some of the bigger well
known
internet comapnies using it, and would like some assistance. What big
time
comapnies are using CF for their pages?

Re: Big companies using CF

2000-12-06 Thread Michael Kear

You could include the Australian Consumers Association, found at
www.choice.com.au.

We have a large site built using an ASP publishing system, that handles
the daily journalist output and which has been no end of trouble, and an
increasing roster of COldFusion components - calculators helping people
workout such things as which is the best Travel Insurance Policy for their
circumstances, how green is your home (how ecology-sound is your
household), how your new car comes out in the ANCAP Crash tests etc.

Our experience is the ASP is in theoory extremely flexible, but in
practice works fine as long as the same person works on a piece of code
all the time. If anyone else gets their sticky fingers into it, it breaks
every time.

The ColdFusion has been solid and simple to adapt and modify.

I intherited the ASP publishing system when i took on the contract
there and it doesnt hold a candle to what Spectra delivers out of the
box. It is highly unlikely that another ASP publishing system will be
implemented whenever we get around to doing a version 2.

ACA can be found on the web at www.choice.com.au

ASP isn't all that bad.

Although ASP is not as easy as CF, it's language is much cleaner.

I have found that CF has irregularities in some of the way coding is
done. For example sometimes you need # signs in front of variables,
othertimes you don't.

In anycase, ASP is "free" with IIS, and if that is all that is available it
ain't all that bad actually!

Re: Big companies using CF

2000-12-05 Thread Michael She

ASP isn't all that bad.

Although ASP is not as easy as CF, it's language is much cleaner.

I have found that CF has irregularities in some of the way coding is
done. For example sometimes you need # signs in front of variables,
othertimes you don't.

In anycase, ASP is "free" with IIS, and if that is all that is available it
ain't all that bad actually!

Depends if he's bound and determined to use ASP, or he's open to new ideas.
If you can talk to the new guy about CF, you can find better arguments than
"whatever.com uses CF". The rapid deployment and easy learning curve of CF
is its strongest point, IMHO. I've worked with other big players, in
general we add new features and integrations much more quickly than other
sites do. A large part of that is that it is simple to change things in CF,
easy to read other people's code, easy to find help if you get stuck.
Fusebox makes it even easier.

Would'nt it be also unlikely if you already have alot of CF work done to go and change
everything over just because of a M$
fanatic? Honestly where I am we have a young guy who is all M$ and lives it and
breaths it , also went to CF training and
knows some CF, however he does not force the M$ methods or software on anyone. I
wouldnt learn to LOVE ASP, but I would
wait and see what this guy is all about, besides he mite have some really good idea's
also. ASP hmm I was told by the
CF instructor from school that was Awfully Slow Pages.

Oh well

I'm a developer with Lucent and we use CF extensively behind the firewall.

In particular, I am using CF to create a monthly e-zine and a multimedia

Joe,

You did say "new IT Director". My suggestion is to learn to "LOVE" ASP or
find a new job.
Pointing out to your new boss the errors in his thinking will will be about
as logical as the current presidential political arguments.

I know this is probably one of those discussions that turn up all the time
on a mailing list such as this, and I apologize for bringing it up. I have
a new IT Director starting at my company in the very near future who's a big
Microsoft fan, and thinks there's nothing better than ASP and/or C# (which I
believe hasn't even been released yet, no?).

When I told him that CF has been around for a long time, and some really big
companies use it, he doubted it. I told him Amazon.com was using it (was I
right about this?).

So anyway, I've agreed to compile a list of some of the bigger well known
internet comapnies using it, and would like some assistance. What big time
comapnies are using CF for their pages?
