Re: [cfaussie] Kym Kovan

In an interesting co-incidence that after reading this message this morning
I came across this research project. It is, I think, worthy of support and
I hope would be something that Kym would have approved of.

[cfaussie] AWIA - Bowers & Weakley: Changemasters

2013-02-09 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
Not exactly a CF related post but things are pretty quiet here of late with
mostly 'event' notices passing though so I hope this isn't too far OT...

Anyway, this is just a heads up to anyone in Sydney about the upcoming
Australian Web Industry Association "Port80" event this Wednesday where
Geoff Bowers will be talking about 'Lessons from the Olympic Games' where
you'll hear what he learned developing the Olympic Games app.

http://awia.createsend1.com/t/ViewEmail/r/514B67752D14199B/6DCBC5F96C44F5922540EF23F30FEDED

AWIA is a broad Web association and I would encourage everyone reading
CFAUSSIE to get involved, even if it is just attending the monthly Port80
meetings. Started in Perth believe it or not and has now made the leap to
(I believe) Sydney and Melbourne.

Now back to our regular programming...

Cheers,

Brett

Re: [cfaussie] [OT] Best Practice for mufti-language websites...

2012-11-08 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
Thanks for your thoughts Gents...

Yes, there will be a default language and there will be a small language
selector in the page banner so it appears on all pages. Changing the
selector will show the alternate language version of the particular page
and will keep that language in the session. And we're not planning to try
to be too clever and pick up the language by location or browser settings.
Having said that, the system uses search friendly URLs (so no index.cfm)
and we plan to slip the language selection into the URL to be something
like yoursite.net.au/fr/about-us so that it is possible to easily share the
alternate language pages and extracting the language code fits quite easily
into our URL decoding. At this stage the expectation is that the navigation
will be 1-1 across all languages and we will include the text explaining
the lack of alternate content as necessary. But yes, if we have learned
nothing else, the next client might want things handled quite differently.

So it sounds like we are on the right track - at least for the current
client.

Thanks again,

Brett

[cfaussie] [OT] Best Practice for mufti-language websites...

2012-11-07 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
This isn't strictly a CF related question but things have been kinda quiet
around here so I figure I'm not going to interrupting anybody and maybe we
can get some kind of discussion going on around here...

What i am wondering is, on a website that is presenting content in various
languages is it best to treat the content entirely separately or do you
'backfill' pages that might be missing in a particular language?

Let me add some context... This is a website that is driven out of a CMS
and let's make the (perhaps rash) assumption that there is a default
language that all pages are initially created in. So, we're coming in and
retrofitting mufti-language support for an existing website. This process
can obviously take a lot of time but in the meantime the client is keen to
show off at the least the beginnings of this new feature, so we have a site
that has lots of pages but only some of which have been translated.

My thinking is that when building the navigation and extracting the content
for an alternate language then if you hit a page for which there is no
content in that alternate language we will pick up the content from the
default language content and present that - perhaps with an annotation
explaining the reason they are seeing englsh rather than french for example.

The alternative is to build just the navigation for the existing alternate
language pages. That just feels wrong to me but I've been known to be
mistaken in the past...

To be honest I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this
question but I am very interested to hear from anyone who has had to deal
with this kind of problem in the past - or in the present for that matter!

Cheers,

Brett

I've been researching unicode recently though I haven't actually done
anything about it.

This page at Ben Nadel was very interesting - read down to the
discussions...

A page referenced deep within the Ben Nadel page looks like it might be a
good starting point in terms of a TODO list for unicode support in CF...

[cfaussie] ColdFusion 10 update 1 (10.0.1) released

2012-09-03 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
http://blogs.coldfusion.com/post.cfm/coldfusion-10-update-1-10-0-1-released

Some of the important bugs fixed in this update are

   - Missing CGI.Redirect_* variables (CGI.Redirect_URL)
   - The value of CGI.path_info is an empty string when URL rewrite
   condition uses {PATH_INFO} in IIS.
   - ORM 2nd level cache does not function when application is restarted
   after timeout.
   - ExpandPath for custom tags is very slow
   - Can't create recurring scheduled jobs in the Standard Edition.

I didn't think of that possibility but no. I think it is Apache just saying
that there isn't a default file in the directory to execute.

They it again... http://cftest.yoursite.net.au/cfc/ I've added an index.cfm

Thanks all the same.

As an example I have created a very simple Hello World cfc and when I put

http://cftest.yoursite.net.au/hello1.cfc?wsdl and

http://cftest.yoursite.net.au/cfc/hello2.cfc?method=helloWorld still gives

I wondered if there was a chance that the name of the directory could be an

http://cftest.yoursite.net.au/cfxx/hello3.cfc?wsdl still give en error, and

http://cftest.yoursite.net.au/cfxx/hello3.cfc?method=helloWorld still works

I've read quite a few posts about mappings and cfcs but con't find anything
definitive. This is a multihomed server running Apache2.2 so I'm not sure how a
mapping would help - unless there is something that CF needs mapped but I can't
find a hint for that anywhere.

One other thing to note... I did edit the neo_xmlrpc.xml file to version 1 but the only effect
appears to be that the error message says "AXIS error" for a version value 1 and
"HTTP Status 500" for a version value of 2.

So, am I just missing a mapping? I even tried mapping "/" to the CF10
webroot but that had no effect.

Many thanks!

Re: [cfaussie] CF10 Form Fields

2012-07-04 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Thanks Andrew,

The plot thickens but becomes a little clearer...

The site is running application.cfm not application.cfc so there is no
opportunity to apply that setting and it appears that the 'default' setting
only takes effect after application.cfm completes execution. Within
application.cfm we are running a blocker script to try and catch SQL injection
hacks and that is what is reading the form values - and crashing because of the
array. Easily fixed but still a pain in the migration process to CF10. I guess
I should bite the bullet and convert to application.cfc.

I put up an example here: http://cftest.yoursite.net.au/formtest.cfm

Cheers,

Brett

Re: [cfaussie] CF10 and redirect_url - fixed! :)

2012-06-27 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

I say 'fixed' but right now this is a workaround. I'm told that a proper fix
will be coming soon...

The workaround comes in two parts. The first is to add some extra statements
into the (Apache) 'mod_jk' config file like so:

JkEnvVar REDIRECT_URL
JkEnvVar REDIRECT_QUERY_STRING

However, this doesn't result in the usual CGI variables being populated, but
the values are accessible using:

And then the world is, as they say, your oyster!

I have to say I was impressed by the response that I got from the Adobe guys
(CF engineer and Product Manager) - once I worked out who to ask!

Thanks also to the replies I got here!

Cheers,

Brett

Hi,

I sent this on the weekend but I don't think it made it to the list - apologies
if I am reposting unnecesarily...

-

Its 1am on Sunday morning and I have just backed out a CF10 upgrade and I am
hoping to find some value in a wasted 4 hours...

The reason I had to back out the upgrade was because I discovered that CF10 is not
passing through the web server CGI variable on page redirection. I rely on the
cgi.redirect_url variable as part of a system to support 'friendly' URLs and it has
served very well for a number of years now. However CF10 is not passing the variables
through. In fact I suspect that it is Tomcat that is the culprit given what I read
here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/railo/6r5eFEPh8q4
<https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#%21topic/railo/6r5eFEPh8q4> which
is from 2009 and the common factor appears to be Tomcat.

This post
http://www.giancarlogomez.com/2012/06/you-are-not-going-crazy-cgipathinfo-is.html
also talks about the same problem.

Am I sure that it IS CF10/Tomcat causing the problem? Yes, absolutely, because
I wrote my very first .php script which I substituted it for my .cfm page using
Apache's errordocument directive and was able to dump the redirect_url variable
without any problem. I had cause to suspect Apache as I had also upgraded to
Apache2.2 as it appeared that CF10 would not run on Apache2.0, so I wanted to
eliminate Apache as the cause of the problem. Having said that, I didn't
succeed in getting CF8 to run on Apache2.2 so the test may not be definitive.

So I'm hoping that Adobe will do something to remedy this PDQ but in case there
are others out there battling with this problem, or have a solution(!), I
thought a post to cfuassie might add some value to an otherwise wasted evening!

Cheers,

Brett

[cfaussie] CF10 and redirect_url

2012-06-25 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Hi,

I sent this on the weekend but I don't think it made it to the list - apologies
if I am reposting unnecesarily...

-

Its 1am on Sunday morning and I have just backed out a CF10 upgrade and I am
hoping to find some value in a wasted 4 hours...

The reason I had to back out the upgrade was because I discovered that CF10 is not
passing through the web server CGI variable on page redirection. I rely on the
cgi.redirect_url variable as part of a system to support 'friendly' URLs and it has
served very well for a number of years now. However CF10 is not passing the variables
through. In fact I suspect that it is Tomcat that is the culprit given what I read
here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/railo/6r5eFEPh8q4
<https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#%21topic/railo/6r5eFEPh8q4> which
is from 2009 and the common factor appears to be Tomcat.

This post
http://www.giancarlogomez.com/2012/06/you-are-not-going-crazy-cgipathinfo-is.html
<http://www.giancarlogomez.com/2012/06/you-are-not-going-crazy-cgipathinfo-is.html>
also talks about the same problem.

Cheers,

Brett

Re: [cfaussie] When did ColdFusion 10 get released?

2012-05-16 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
It seems that there are some 'interesting' changes in the CF10 EULA.
Particularly interesting is that CF9 has already been pulled and if you
want to use CF9 you must purchase a CF10 license and accept the new EULA -
as long as you already have the CF9 installer...

For myself at least there is a huge finge benefit to people NOT going
directly to CF411.com and that is that I get to hear and learn about these
really useful tools before I actually need them... Plus I get reminded
about the site as well.

Thanks for the great resource Charlie. It might not be top-of-mind but it

Re: [cfaussie] CF Temp files

2011-12-20 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
Thanks Charlie,

As usual you have surmissed much of what is going on quite accurately.

There is no danger of this being a DoS attack, the system in question is
effectively closed to the outside world. And the system does have a
significant amount of activity in terms of files being uploaded. In
addition, all images are 'served' via a CF script using CFIMAGE that will
most definitely be another source of these temporary files. And given the
volume of work being carried out it does not surprise me that so many
temporary files are being created.

In terms of the log files, I don't see a lot of activity there, especially
with regard to file uploads and image serving but then they are wrapped up
in cftry/cfcatch so we are not going to know about it via error logging.
Which could suggest the issue is hidden. Maybe the 'delete' permission has
been removed without us knowing about it? That would mean the temporary
files could not be removed and the try/catch would be hiding it from us
seeing it as a problem until the disk fills up.

 Thanks again Charlie, most hlepful!

Cheers,

Brett

You're right, it feels like something must have changed and I'm trying to
find out from the guys who look after the infrastructure but I would be
surprised if there had been a change that we weren't told about.

[cfaussie] CF Temp files

2011-12-20 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
Hi,

A couple of days ago one of our production servers ran out of disk space. I
assumed it was the application not cleaning up temporary files but after
the initial panic we discovered that the
JRun4\servers\cfusion\SERVER-INF\temp\cfusion-war-tmp directory was FULL of
files named like "neotmp999...999.tmp". I have a good idea where these
files are being generated in the application but they are being generated
by CF and we have no direct visibility of them. And I assume that up until
a few days ago that CF itself was cleaning them up - otherwise the
application would have failed months ago. When the disk full error happened
there were over 6.000 of these files consuming over 15GB of disk space and
all of them were time-stamped in the previous three days and the other
server was close to being out of disk space. Today both servers have over
2,000 of these files consuming over 6.5GB of disk so we will be running a
manual cleanup very soon.

I've searched the usual places but there is nothing I can find that
resembles this issue. There is some talk of sandbox security on that
directory causing some access issues but nothing about temporary files not
being cleaned up.

Has anybody seen this before? Or have an idea what might be causing it or
how to fix it?

Many thanks and Happy Christmas to all!

No reason why you can't do this. Just double check that the standalone

Re: [cfaussie] Strange problem - Element RECORDCOUNT is undefined in query

Maybe you also have "fix_this" defined in a different scope?

Hi,

Running across a odd problem in CF 9,0,0,251028. development server.

I was just running a process that usually works and has not been modified for
quite a long time. part of that process runs a query and then loops over the
result set. Simple enough… however the query does not seem to exist after it
has run.

eg: The following code returns Element RECORDCOUNT is undefined in FIX_THIS.

 select sb_invoice.sb_invoice_id, sb_invoice.sb_reminder_date,
max(sb_claim_date) as sb_claim_date

 from sb_invoice

 inner join sb_invoice_item

 on sb_invoice.sb_invoice_id = sb_invoice_item.sb_invoice_id

 inner join sb_item_claim

 on sb_invoice_item.sb_invoice_item_id =
sb_item_claim.sb_invoice_item_id

 where sb_invoice.sb_bill_mech_code in
('M','F','AG','SC','MB','MO')

 and sb_invoice_item.sb_item_status_code in ('21','24','31')

 group by sb_invoice.sb_invoice_id, sb_invoice.sb_reminder_date

 having sb_invoice.sb_reminder_date <
DateAdd(d,30,max(sb_claim_date))

 update sb_invoice

 set sb_reminder_date =

 where sb_invoice_id =

I have changed the name of the query to a few different values, I have used
cfloop instead of cfoutput, I added the cfif.recordcount to see if that helped,
to no avail. Without the CFIF the error was :

*Attribute validation error for tag cfoutput. *

The value of the attribute query, which is currently fix_this, is invalid.

Debug output shows that the query executed in 922ms and returned no rows.

What am I missing?

Re: [cfaussie] Re: Read an Excel spreadsheet...

2010-08-02 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
I can't quote the forum that I read it on but yes, the problem has been
mentioned and was what got me thinking that it was the file that was at
fault. Someone said that an excel file they were trying to read was failing
but after removing a couple of lines that it could be read without issue.

I don't know and I make no judgement on who is right and who is wrong in
terms of whether or not these (I assume) non-standard format excel files
should be readable. My guess is that POI is written to the 'standard' so the
files are rejected but since M$ wrote the standard they have a more flexible
interpretation of it and have been well known to treat standards as
guidelines before.

At this stage I have had to send it back to the client to find out if we can
have the excel file delivered without the offending 'extra' lines and
columns. At least now I know a lot more about POI than I did before...

[cfaussie] Coding Standards

2010-08-02 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
I've been looking at published CF coding standards and guidelines and just
thought I would share this gem...

Which do you think came first?

http://cf.etisbew.com/home.cfm?file=codingstandards.htm

or

http://www.brevardcounty.us/is/webdevguide/codingstandards/cfml/cfmlguide.htm

Blatant plagarism like this makes me wonder what else they might be
borrowing...

If you have a public coding standard that you would like to share I'd been
to hear about it. So far Sean Corfield's old CFMX coding standard at
http://livedocs.adobe.com/wtg/public/coding_standards/contents.html looks
like the best place to start...

Re: [cfaussie] Re: Read an Excel spreadsheet...

2010-07-30 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Thanks to everyone who chipped in on this so I thought I would provide a bit of
am update...

In the end... It was the file itself! It is a dynamically generated excel file
so I am unsure of what kind of 'standard' it might be. It can be opened by both
excel and Open Office so it would appear to comply with some kind of excel
standard, but all of the utilities that I tried, which all (I think) refer to
the Java POI library, can't read the file. With a bit of trial and error I
found that if I deleted a couple of blank columns and/or some header records
then the file could be read very easily by all of the various code I had tried.
SO... It seems to me that something isn't quite right with the POI library,
which is a shame because I bet the .net utilities (if I could use them) would
work fine.

Thanks again,

Brett

Re: [cfaussie] Read an Excel spreadsheet...

2010-07-27 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Thanks Steve,

If I had more understanding of the excel version then I might be tempted to go
down this track but I can just imagine the fun given I think it is an xls file
generated on the fly.

And while I have MSSQL for development work I don't have it on the production
server - M$ already takes enough of my money.

managed to get it to read the file but it couldn't read the actual cell values.

while I can get that to read the demo excel file it won't read the one I need
it to read.

I know there are a few more options but I was just wondering if anyone here had
done this before and could let me know what worked for them...

Many thanks,

Brett

Re: [cfaussie] Where and how to buy CF Builder

Thanks Steve,

I have access to a wholesaler as well but interestingly they don't list CF
Builder or Flash Builder?

At this point I will probably just go with the Adobe shop. Thanks all the same!

Is there an Aussie alternative to buying online from Adobe?

And why would I buy CF Builder for $374 (which includes Flash Builder 4)
when I can buy Flash Builder 4 for $312 (which includes CF Builder)??? And
why aren't they the same price?

Hi Everyone

I've got a cf template set as my 404 handler (i'm using apache). I just
upgraded from cf6 to cf7 (stop laughing). Under cf6 I could see what page
was really requested using the cgi.request_uri variable. Under 7 its just
giving me the path of the cf template that I have set up to handle the 404s.
I guess I'm just after a way to access the request/form/cookie scopes from
pages that arn't really there.

thanks in advance

Re: [cfaussie] Web Service strangeness

2010-06-21 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
A quick update...

In the end I have had to abandon cfobject and cfinvoke in favour of manually
calling the service via cfhttp...

Ben Nadal (as usual) provided the key to unlocking this issue:
http://www.bennadel.com/blog/1809-Making-SOAP-Web-Service-Requests-With-ColdFusion-And-CFHTTP.htm

Its not really a solution, just a work around, but that is one of the great
things about CF - there is usually more than one way to make these kinds of
things work!

Re: [cfaussie] Web Service strangeness

2010-06-14 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
Yes, same error. What you suggest is actually the code that I started with.

My interpretation is that CF is failing to compile the basics of the service
as the 'stub' files are being rewritten each time I try to call the service
and the service isn't showing up in CF Administrator.

At this stage I suspect a stray comma at the end of the 'targetNamespace'
parameter in the service code itself...

targetNamespace="*http://intranet.ad.xyz.com.au:6113/LDAPAuthentication,*";
but it is asmx and I don't have access to it...

Now I just need to find the right person to ask the question of...

SO Now I am wondering about the commas that are appearing in the middle

And I am finding commas in the directory names, under
comdfusion9/stubs/WS1/... It seems odd but I haven't had enough experience
with servcies to know for sure. Certainly it seems it is this 'compile' step
that is the difference between CF and the other service browser tools that
don't have a problem analysing the same service.

I'm trying to find some services to compare against, but if anyone can
identify this as the definitive cause that would be great.

Its happening on the invoke. I have tried to just create the service as an
object with a view to then calling the method but which ever way I try I get
the same syntax error. It is, I think, something (simple) in the underlying
code of the service but the 'syntax' error message is giving nothing away.

Re: [cfaussie] Web Service strangeness

2010-06-11 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
Sadly no... Its not a public facing service, its an internal authentication
service. I could post a sanitised version of the WSDL if you think that is
useful but given that other tools are dealing with it I wasn't sure there
was any point.

Thanks

[cfaussie] Web Service strangeness

2010-06-11 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes
I'm looking at a web service that is written in .asmx but CF is throwing a
'syntax error' about along the lines of "Syntax Error: ; expected instead of
this token Found 2 syntax errors in..."

I've got CFbuilder to inspect it, and Altova XMLSpy as well (thanks to tips
I found on Charlie Arehart's blog) and both tools have no trouble dealing
with the service. Plus I can browse the WSDL output without any dramas.

I've tried cfinvoke and cfobject in all manner of variations but CF still
trips over whatever it is...

I'm just wondering if this is something other people have encountered? Is CF
overly pedantic about syntax compared to CFbuilder and XMLspy?

Given the nature of the enterprise here I don't have an easy way to look at
or rework the service itself, and really it is a very simple authentication
service that accepts two strings and returns a value, so I am hoping there
is something I can tweak in CF to sort this out...

Many thanks,

Brett

Re: [cfaussie] CFBuilder

2010-02-19 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Hi Andrew,

"Perhaps I should have installed CF Builder as an eclipse plugin itself
instead?"

I'm thinking this is your answer. I've been running the standalone version and
haven't seen anything relating to plugins, but then I'm not really looking for
them either.

There is also a CFBuilder list that you can join through the Adobe
labs/CFBuilder page.

Cheers,

Hi,

Also, I installed the standalone edition. Can I add other Eclipse
plugins to this? In particular I need subclipse for svn support, and
I'll probably want mxunit as well.

Something like this works well in mySQL...

Select count(*) as pageCount, dayOfMonth(activityDate) as dayOfMonth,
activityDate

its a summary of activity by day - activitydate is a timestamp...

When you get a list of barbies (eg. Rememberance Park, Campbell, ACT) the list

[cfaussie] Re: Bolt

2009-07-23 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Thanks Mark,

I didn't expect it to be pain free and this is the first major issue that I
have found so maybe it is a sign that it is time to bite the bullet...

'Projects' have been a bit of a pain in the past though because of the
structure I have adopted where most 'sites' are just skeletons and all the code
is safely tucked away in another directory far removed from the web root. If CF
Builder will let me specify separate directories as part of a single project
then that will help, but it hasn't been possible in other IDEs that I have
tried. Is the 'project' structure used by CF Builder common to all Eclipse type
IDEs? By which I mean if I go looking for a tutorial on 'Projects in Eclipse'
will that help me find out what I need to know?

Thanks again,

Brett

[cfaussie] Re: Bolt

2009-07-23 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

This is where I have to admit to being a dinosaur and long time user of
Homesite which knows nothing of things like 'projects' but has a very good text
search facility that I use all the time. Trying to use a search facility
outside of the IDE isn't going to fly because it is just too painful to go
backwards and forwards - having found the file I want to just click on it, and
to be honest I just want it built in...

Many thanks!

popup from the Browse button isn't a directory/file browser.

[cfaussie] Bolt

2009-07-23 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Is anyone trying out Bolt, aka Coldfusion Builder?

If so... Do you know how to make the Search function work over a directory
rather than a 'workspace' or 'working set'? I've been trying to use it
exclusively since it was released on Beta and have been reasonably happy with
it, but this is a bit of a show stopper for me...

Thanks.

A table version is easy...

#contact_type#
 #contact_surname#

You can do it with divs and css as well I am sure... Hopefully this will give
you a start if that is what you need...

I found a couple of old (2005!) references to ANZ eGate in my cfaussie

Tips?

Thanks,

[cfaussie] Re: Cold Fusion Encryption of Bank Details etc

2009-02-25 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Hi Claude,

The simple solution is to use cfencrypt before you write the information to the
database and then use cfdecrypt when you read it out again - using the same
encryption key of course. For added security you could make the user logon
before the end of month to enter the encryption key so you don't have to store
it in the code or in a file somewhere. Of course you could store the key in a
lookup database table somewhere, encrypted with its own key which you store in
a file somewhere else. I guess there are a myriad of scenarios...

Mind you... If the client is running any kind of non-cf code or just plain sql
against the database then they are going to have problems if they want to get
to a field that you have encrypted...

Cheers,

Brett

[cfaussie] Re: Validating dates ... what's the trick?

2009-02-19 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

I could never get a reliable result from the various 'parsedate' functions...

In the end I wrote my own function to create dates from strings. It looks for a
variety of delimiters then extracts day, month, year; or month, year, day; or
even year, month, day; depending on how it was set up.

The trick at the end is to use createDate(year, month, day) wrapped up in a
try/catch. If it throws an error then you have a problem.

[cfaussie] Re: CF Maintenance purchase

2008-10-29 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Sure, $5K is a significant investment depending on your circumstances.

But are you saying that the annual maintenance fee for CF is 90% of the
purchase price? As in, CFENT costs $5,555 up front and $5,000 for maintenance
annually? That would a bit over the top in my book. Or maybe it is 90% of the
upgrade price? I think that would be more likely and in which case I'd say
'place your bets!'. In reality the maintenance plans are aimed at the corporate
end of the market where they prefer to pay an annual fee rather than have to go
through the whole purchase process each time a new version of CF is released.

But I'm sure there are whole fields of study devoted to the question of how to
build a sustainable business around writing software. And at the top of the
list in terms of difficulty is to build a business around a software product
(or products). If the initial investment to write the damn thing doesn't do you
in, the ongoing support and maintenance probably will, and finding a way to
entice your clients to part with more money to pay for that support and
maintenance the hardest job of all.

[cfaussie] Re: CF Maintenance purchase

2008-10-29 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Isn't maintenance an annual charge? So you pay it each year and are covered
from year to year for upgrades? So I don't really agree that they have anything
to honour if you don't take out or renew your maintenance. I don't know what
the fees are on CF but other software I have had on maintenance in the past has
been around 10% of purchase price. In the end it comes down to a question of
whether it is going to be cheaper to pay one or two years of maintenance rather
than the upgrade cost from CF8 to CF9, having just paid for the upgrade from
CFx to CF9. And of course Adobe probably hates this kind of speculation because
the temptation is going to be for you to put off the upgrade until CF9 is
released...

[cfaussie] Re: SQL INJECTION

2008-09-26 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

One small issue I have just discovered with blocker.cfm. If you apply it to a
site that is running webservices that rely on the application.cfm file that you
apply blocker.cfm to then they will fail because there isn't a 'form' defined
for the webservice call. I wrapped the code up in a simple ... and it was all good again.

2008-09-09 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Thanks Steve,

I'll admit that I didn't know that. Could be very useful...

Cheers,

[cfaussie] Re: Quick List question

2008-09-09 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

I don't think list processing is clever enough to say "Ignore delimiters that
are inside double quotes" so it treats the comma inside your 'third' element as
a valid delimiter.

You might have to run a clever bit of regex to replace said commas before the
list processing and once you have the element then simply restore the commas.

Someone cleverer than me will need to provide the regex though... :)

[cfaussie] Re: The requested instance is either invalid or not running

2008-09-08 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

I think your application variable is fine as the error message is suggesting
that the database that you are trying to connect to is 'invalid or not
running'. So that suggests to me that CF *has* a dsn name that it is happy with
but is then failing to connect to said database...

But I have no idea why it would be causing you a problem just for bot sessions?
Maybe you have some special code in place for bots that is affecting this?

Cheers,

Brett
