[Chat] Attn Gap shoppers: Saturday June 29th 1-2 pm rally at Harborplace Gap against Bangladesh factory deaths
By now everyone has heard about the over 1,000 people who died in the collapse of an apparel factory in Bangladesh two months ago, and the hundreds more who've died in fires in other Bangladesh clothing factories in the last couple of years. In total, over 1800 Bangladeshi factory workers have died since 2005 in fires and building collapses in factories manufacturing for all the major American brands, including Gap, Walmart, Target, Sears, Levi's, and on down the line. As the New York Times reported last month: Bangladesh is the world’s second-leading garment exporter, trailing only China, but the industry has been plagued by concerns over safety and angry protests over rock-bottom wages. The industry has grown rapidly in the past decade, particularly as rising wages in China have pushed many global clothing companies to look for lower costs elsewhere. Bangladesh has the lowest labor costs in the world, with the minimum wage for garment workers set at roughly $37 a month. (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/25/world/asia/bangladesh-building-collapse.html) In response to the outcry over the recent disasters, 43 top brands and retailers, including H&M, PVH (which includes Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Van Heusen, Izod, Arrow, G. H. Bass, Geoffrey Beene, BCBG Max Azria, Chaps, Sean John, Kenneth Cole New York, Joseph Abboud, and Michael Kors), Benetton, and Abercrombie & Fitch, have signed the legally-binding Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh that commits them to modest but real and verifiable improvements. But not Gap or Walmart. If you shop at Gap or Walmart and want to see them spend what amounts to a fraction of 1% of their profits to improve factory safety in Bangladesh, join us outside Baltimore's Gap stores to send them a message as part of a global day of action against these two leading companies who set the pace for the rest of US clothing retailers. Here are the details: When: Saturday, June 29 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Where: At the corner of Pratt and Calvert Streets downtown, outside the main entrance to The Gallery at Harborplace, where Gap and Gap Kids are located. RSVP at one or both of these two pages: http://corporateactionnetwork.org/events/hold-gap-accountable-at-harborplace-on-june-29th/ https://www.facebook.com/events/471025789652724/ Please spread the word -- share this event, invite your friends, bring your kids -- join us on the 29th! Re: [Chat] trash cans
Judy, if you're going to lecture everyone that they should buy American, you can't then start complaining that it's too expensive to do so unless you can demonstrate that it's possible to find equally high quality trash cans for less. I'm sure it's possible to find ones made in Asia for a fraction of the price (www.nytimes.com/2007/11/26/nyregion/26manhole.html tells the story of how New York City began buying manhole covers made in India because they were so much cheaper), but you would be against that, right? I'm sure it's also possible to find lower quality ones that won't last as long, but then you're pushing the CVCBD to be penny-wise and pound-foolish because they'd probably end up paying more in the long run. Can you show that similar institutions are able to purchase American-made, high-quality trash cans for less? If not, then I don't understand why you're complaining. -Matthew -Original Message- From: jberlin To: David Hill ; Tweefie Millspaugh ; The Charles Village Chat List ; Charles Village Discussion List ; Mary Pat. Re: [Chat] distinction between Charles Village Discussion listserve and the Chat listserve
My recollection is that when Emil started up the two lists sometime in the first half of the last decade to replace the original discussion list that had shut down, he created two of them because there was a very impassioned debate going on at the time about the Benefits District so it seemed sensible to create the chat list as a refuge from that. [Chat] Fwd: Tuesday at noon: Rally downtown for health reform
FYI for Charles Villagers who want to raise their voices in support of health reform -- As part of the national mobilization to push back against the anti-health reform message that a lot of members of Congress got from last week's election in MA, we're having hundreds of rallies Tuesday around the nation in support of health reform. One of them is downtown at noon on Tuesday. Click the link and put in your zip code to get full details and RSVP. Thanks, Matthew -Original Message- From: Charles Chamberlain, Democracy for America To: weinste...@aol.com Sent: Sun, Jan 24, 2010 12:21 pm Subject: Democrats on the verge of full-fledged retreat Matthew - After one bad Senate election, most Democrats in Washington are on the verge of full-fledged retreat and everything we've fought for together hangs in the balance. President Obama has signaled he's open to dramatically scaling back health care reform. The chairman of the Senate Banking Committee says he might gut the financial reform bill to appease Republicans. And on top of all that, the Supreme Court just opened the floodgates of corporate cash on politics! Retreat is exactly the wrong message for Democrats to take from recent election losses. The lesson from Massachusetts is that voters want more change -- not less. It's time for Democrats to stand up to corporate interests and fight for working families by passing healthcare reform and taking on Wall Street. So Democracy for America members are joining with our friends at MoveOn in organizing emergency rallies nationwide on Tuesday to demand Democrats show backbone and leadership -- starting with passage of real healthcare reform. FIND AN EMERGENCY RALLY NEAR YOU We need a big turnout to show Democrats we're still waiting on them to deliver the change we voted for on healthcare and everything else. Make no mistake; Democrats still have the ability to pass healthcare reform and other progressive legislation. Even after last Tuesday's election loss, Democrats still have larger majorities in Congress than Republicans ever did under George W. Bush. All Democrats in Washington need is to show some backbone. It's up to us to demand they use it, because progressives don't retreat -- we lead. ATTEND AN EMERGENCY RALLY ON TUESDAY Thank you for everything you do, -Charles Charles Chamberlain, Political Director Democracy for America Democracy for America relies on you and the people-power of more than one million members to fund the grassroots organizing and training that delivers progressive change on the issues that matter. Many people worked hard to defeat this measure—including MoveOn members, who contributed over $300,000 to defeat it. But agents of intolerance used fear-mongering to eke out a win. After the election, people across California immediately took to the streets, vowing to put the state on the right side of history by overturning Prop 8. Now folks everywhere are coming together to add their voices. Tomorrow (Saturday) there will be rallies in support of marriage equality in every single state. If you want to attend an event in your state, go to this page and click on your state name—you'll see the location of any rallies planned: http://www.moveon.org/r?r=51025&id=15119-1193638-XfZ04_x&t=1 These rallies will send a strong signal that depriving people of rights is no longer acceptable in America—and it will also be a first step in ongoing activism across the nation. There's one other thing you can do to support the fight for marriage equality. The Courage Campaign (which does MoveOn-style organizing in California) is working with other groups on a two-year grassroots plan to overturn Prop 8 in the 2010 election. The first step is for folks to speak out together with one voice right away by signing a pledge to help overturn Prop 8. Over 100,000 people have already signed the pledge—and thousands more are signing every day. Even non-Californians are signing the pledge in solidarity. KZ POLICE THUGGERY Baltimore election-night story on? http://markcrispinmiller.blogspot.com - ?? Joe Obama party-goers tasered, thrown in jail In Baltimore, a Democratic city. MCM Mark -- I have to be brief because I've been awake now for almost 35 hours. I was rounded up along with a dozen or so other people last night at an impromptu Obama celebration in Baltimore and jailed. My crime? Photographing the Baltimore cops as they loaded people into a paddy wagon. The crowd was very well-behaved -- mostly Hopkins students overjoyed with the Obama victory. A phalanx of cops moved in and started arbitrarily arresting people. They tased an undergraduate for trying to get back into his building -- after asking him to go inside. It was insane. I started taking photos with my cell phone as they lined up cuffed college kids, professors, etc. and a cop approached me. "I'm a journalist," I said (I freelance for Baltimore City Paper) and he knocked the phone out of my hand onto the street. "Write a nice long st! ory about this," he said, spun me around, and he and another cop cuffed me with flexi-cuffs and loaded me into the police van. This was 2am last night (Tuesday). I served as an election judge all day, and the last thing I expected was to spend the night in Baltimore City lockup. Unreal. The dangerous thugs the police decided to jail included me (an election judge, writer, and employee of the Bloomberg School of Public Health), TWO professors of anthropology at Hopkins, a Baltimore City school teacher, and a variety of students. It was one student's birthday. The student who was tasered had bruises on his wrists from the cuffs and a bruised eye. Truly a dangerous group of criminals. We were released this morning -- no charges were brought against us. We're getting together as a group to see what recourse we have. One of the anthropology profs, Aaron Goodfellow, has contacted the ACLU and I'm going t! o follow-up. There were lots of students with cell phones, videocams, and cameras, so I'm hoping some of this was caught on tape. [Chat] Fwd: Electric Rate Hike Is Bill for Ignoring Campaign Finance Reform...
Both of Charles Village's State Senators need to hear from us. Sen. Joan Carter Conway, the committee chair, supports the bill but is under enormous pressure to keep it bottled up in committee. Sen. Catherine Pugh voted for the bill last year when we lost by one vote on the Senate floor, but this year she appears to be undecided. Please use the link below to write to whichever one is yours (the system will figure it out based on your address), thank her for her support last year, and urge her to take action now in support of the bill! -Matthew Weinstein -Original Message- From: Progressive Maryland <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Matthew Weinstein <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thu, 20 Mar 2008 11:57 am Subject: Electric Rate Hike Is Bill for Ignoring Campaign Reform... [Chat] What a way to spend MLK Day!
Bravo Ralph! http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/baltimore_city/bal-te.md.king21jan21,0,6033054.story?coll=bal_tab01_layout Martin Luther King Jr. Day Chasing the dream, 1 new job at a time Career fair echoes his pursuit of economic justice Caption: Ralph E. Moore Jr. used the inspiration of the Rev. Martin Luther King's economic justice campaign to begin an annual job fair that has grown every year since it began in 2002. (Sun photo by Jed Kirschbaum / January 18, 2008) By Kelly Brewington | Sun reporter January 21, 2008 "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others. In dangerous valleys and hazardous pathways, he will lift some bruised and beaten brother to a higher and more noble life." -- The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Pasted to Ralph E. Moore Jr.'s door at St. Frances Academy Community Center is a poignant quote from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. It's not about having a dream, and it says nothing about the content of one's character. Rather, the passage comes from King's 1963 "Strength to Love" speech, which stresses the need to uplift those who are less fortunate. It's been the foundation of Moore's anti-poverty activism for more than two decades. It also serves as inspiration for an annual job fair and skills training event that the Baltimore community center hosts every year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Today, amid parades, volunteer efforts and lectures planned to commemorate the observance of King's birthday - he would have been 79 - scholars, civil rights pioneers and activists such as Moore are urging people to remember King, the champion for economic justice. Less celebrated than his epic 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, the Montgomery bus boycott or his oratory gifts is King's anti-poverty crusade. "People don't recall that the March on Washington was actually called the march for jobs and freedom," said Moore, 55. "When he died, he was working for economic justice issues. He was actively organizing a strong coalition of a variety of races to focus on the poverty issue." One need look no farther than Baltimore for evidence that poverty and the social ills associated with it remain 40 years since King's death, Moore said. Nearly 20 percent of Baltimore's population lives in poverty, the U.S. Census found in 2006. And an estimated 227,700 Baltimoreans 16 and older are unemployed or not in the workforce, according to the city's Job Opportunities Task Force. Six years ago, Moore, who grew up in Baltimore's Sandtown community, began tying King's anti-poverty message to the small job fair. The first event attracted a few dozen employers, but the demand from job seekers was huge. Nearly 300 people showed up. It was the first time a formal job fair had come to Johnston Square, this economically depressed neighborhood just east of Mount Vernon, Moore said. This year, several hundred people have registered for the event, which will feature workshops on resume writing and interview skills in addition to recruiting. And unlike many similar events, this one encourages job seekers to stay in touch with organizers. The first 10 people who contact Moore on or after April 4 - the anniversary of the date King was assassinated - will receive $100, if they can prove they have retained the job they got at the fair. "It's not a lot, but we want to make sure people connect to jobs," said Moore, who previously served as vice president of the now-defunct Center for Poverty Solutions. "We are dealing with a tougher population, people with criminal records, and there are a lot of discouraged workers because of this." Moore estimates that about 85 percent of the people attracted to the event have arrest records, which remains a huge barrier to employment. But it is precisely the population that most needs employment, he said. Job fair organizers reached out to employers who are willing to hire people with criminal records. "These are the folks who are forgotten; this is the invisible population," he said. "But these are people who want to do more and better their lives." Waged in the final year of his life, King's campaign for full employment was controversial, unpopular among some of his activist peers and risky. Culminating in the Poor People's Campaign of 1968, King planned for "a multiracial army of the poor" to descend on Washington in a nonviolent protest urging Congress to sign a poor people's bill of rights. He called it the second phase of the civil rights struggle. "He said it over and over again - racism, poverty and war are the triple evils," said Thomas F. Jackson, a history professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and author of From Civil Rights to Human Rights: Martin Luther King Jr. and the S
Re: [Chat] Mayor's Blue Ribbon Panel Report
Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but the panel is a pretty serious group, so what that says to me is either a) the Mayor wanted to appear for election purposes like she was serious about cutting the property tax rate, or b) the Mayor really is serious about cutting the property tax rate and wanted to build a political consensus and some momentum for accomplishing that. If the answer were a, then they probably would have had the report come out before the election rather than afterwards. On the one hand, this is incredible. On the other hand, this is apparently probably less than my house is worth. So it doesn't seem likely that I could successfully appeal the new assesssment. One thing that will be interesting to see is whether the new higher assessments will have a negative effect on sales prices, since new owners pay the full valuation with no 4%-per-year cap. [Chat] Two Charles Village opportunities next week to meet Michael Sarbanes
The Sun poll last week showed the City Council President race tied with a huge undecided vote, so I want to highlight two upcoming opportunities to meet Michael Sarbanes: Monday, July 30th, 7:30 - 9 pm at Dawna Cobb's house, 2943 N. Charles St. This one is officially a fundraiser, but no one will be turned away who just wants to meet Michael and hear what he has to say about the challenges facing our city. And if you are already supporting Michael, please bring your checkbook too! Thursday 8/2 7-9pm at the McElroys, 2840 Guilford This is an open house where Michael will share his thoughts about what he would do as City Council President and engage in open discussion with community members. I am supporting Michael because I worked closely with him at CPHA and know him to be something very rare in politics -- an effective idealist who combines grassroots community activism with years of practical political savvy -- not to mention his expertise in numerous areas of public policy, from affordable housing, community revitalization, and transportation to crime and drugs. I know that he would work effectively with the Mayor and also make the City Council into a source of fresh ideas and reform initiatives in partnership with neighborhoods. The campaign website is www.michaelsarbanes.com. -Matthew ** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/chat@charlesvillage.info/

Good Lord, something else Gewirtz and I have in common! (in addition to our strong feelings about the CVCBD) I got my father the Tom Lehrer CD box set a few years back, which gave us all the chance to relisten to his works and add them to my laptop digital collection. [Chat] Annapolis Action Alert: Sen. Joan Carter Conway & Clean Money Campaign Finance Reform
Annapolis Action Alert Clean Money Campaign Finance Reform HB 731/SB 546 Lead Sponsors: Del. Jon Cardin and Sen. Paul Pinsky Dear Friends, Just two and a half months ago, on January 4, 2007, State Senator Joan Carter Conway met with a group of about 30 constituents and others at the NAACP headquarters on 26th Street and committed to support Clean Money Campaign Finance Reform. She promised that she would personally cosponsor the bill and that it would receive a timely vote in her committee this session. We were delighted and grateful for her strong commitment of support, especially given her powerful position as chair of the EHEA Committee and also considering the well-known opposition of the Senate President, Thomas V. Mike Miller. And, indeed, she has cosponsored the bill and held the bill hearing early in the session, on February 22nd. But this week, with just over three weeks left in the session, Senator Conway has told us that she will not bring up the bill for a vote because of Mike Miller's opposition. NOW IS THE TIME FOR SEN. CONWAY TO HEAR FROM CONSTITUENTS THAT WE ASK HER TO KEEP HER PROMISE AND HOLD A VOTE ON THE BILL. We believe that we have the votes to pass the bill out of Sen. Conway's EHEA committee. This is the same bill that passed this committee as well as the full House of Delegates last year. By way of background, this is the legislation that will make Maryland the fourth state to enact this cutting-edge solution to the problem of private campaign contributors accruing undue influence in politics and policy-making. The status quo undermines the very foundations of democracy. This kind of campaign finance reform -- voluntary public financing for qualified, viable candidates -- makes available a stream of funding that comes with none of the strings that inevitably accompany large private donations, and does it in a way that passes constitutional muster under the Supreme Court's 1976 Buckley v. Vallejo decision. To read more, please visit www.publiccampaign.org. You can read the Baltimore Sun's editorial on the bill at www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/bal-ed.reform14feb14,0,3311395.story?coll=bal-opinion-headlines, and you can read the report of the state study commission that recommended the bill at http://mlis.state.md.us/other/campaign_financing.pdf. The General Assembly's fiscal and policy note on the bill is available at http://mlis.state.md.us/2007RS/fnotes/bil_0006/sb0546.pdf. Now is the time to take action and make your voice heard! Please send an e-mail today to Senator Conway at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or call 410-841-3145 (I am told that phone calls get more attention at this late stage of the session). Ask her to keep her promise and bring SB546 out of her committee now. These calls and e-mails are critical -- they will allow Senator Conway to tell the Senate President that pressure from her district requires her to go ahead and hold a vote in spite of his opposition. Please forward this e-mail to other 43rd District constituents, neighborhood e-mail lists, and others who you think will take action to advance this reform. The coalition supporting this legislation is made up of a broad range of organizations including Common Cause, the League of Women Voters, Progressive Maryland, NAACP, AFL-CIO, Sierra Club, PIRG, and the Baltimore Jewish Council. Thank you for adding your critically needed voice to theirs! Matthew Weinstein ** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Re: [Chat] The Hopkins Store
My best recollection of The Hopkins Store is from 1993 or 94 when they paid $100 to be one of the sponsors ofthe Neighborhood Walkers program (along with Eddie's and Sam's Bagels). That meant that they got their logo on the back of the mug with the CVCA logo on the front that we gave to new Neighborhood Walker recruits. We pretty quickly went through the entire order of 50 mugs or 100 or whatever it was -- there are probably other folks out there who still have them! -Matthew In a message dated 11/17/06 9:43:47 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > My main memory of that store is that when my daughter was learning to play > the flute and would go there to buy cigarette papers (which she had been > instructed to use to clean her flute), they would always refuse to see them > to > her. [Chat] R. W. Apple's ode to Baltimore cuisine
Reading his obituaries in today's Times and Washington Post reminded me of Apple's 2003 piece on Baltimore, which I will paste in below. At the time it appeared I was a bit shocked to see such a good food article appear under the byline of a reporter who I thought of as a political correspondent. It's quite impressive how a good reporter who's not even from here can actually get everything right! The obituaries are at http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/05/nyregion/05applecnd.html?_r=1&oref=slogin&pagewanted=all and http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/04/AR2006100400703.html. If you enjoy those, you'll love Calvin Trillin's New Yorker profile: http://www.newyorker.com/printables/fact/030929fa_fact1. -Matthew In Bawlmer, Hon, Crab Is King New York Times February 19, 2003 By R. W. APPLE Jr. BALTIMORE "BALTIMORE is a quirky kind of town," its former mayor, Kurt Schmoke, said not long ago. "Its heart is still working class, even if the economic realities have changed. It is suspicious of anything elegant or stylish or pretentious. We have this world-famous educational institution, Johns Hopkins, in our midst, but it has never quite won the affection of ordinary Baltimoreans." You can see that spirit in the refreshingly unpompous local politicians, including the two senators, a tough, wisecracking Polish-American, Barbara Mikulski, and a reserved, cerebral Greek-American, Paul Sarbanes, as well as William Donald Schaefer, a wacky former mayor and governor who once settled a bet by diving into the seal pool at the National Aquarium. You can see it in the city's sports heroes, gritty men like Frank Robinson, Johnny Unitas and Cal Ripken, who never blew their own horns. And you can see it in the work of Baltimore's favorite-son moviemakers, John Waters, who celebrated beehive hairdos, and Barry Levinson, who fondly explored the world of siding salesmen. Both like to set their films in their hometown, in what the iconoclastic Mr. Waters calls "this gloriously decrepit, inexplicably charming city." The standard form of greeting is "hon," a term of endearment commemorated by a faux-50's restaurant called Cafe Hon in Hampden, up north near the main Hopkins campus and the national Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Baltimore's eating habits are idiosyncratic, too. The city loves crabs, oysters and rockfish from Chesapeake Bay, which its poet laureate, H. L. Mencken, once described as "an immense protein factory." It prefers diners and taverns tucked into venerable row houses to newer, trendier spots. It shops in the city's old-fashioned covered markets, a half-dozen of them - the only places except the Ravens and the Orioles games where all of Baltimore comes together, blue-collar and blue-blooded, black and white, Greeks and Italians and Germans. Crab is king. People here can't live without their crab soup, their crab cakes and especially their spicy steamed blue crabs, which they rip open, split in two, crack with a wooden mallet and prod with a knife, excavating every last bite of sweet snowy meat with all the fervor of an Egyptologist opening a pharaoh's tomb. In the winter months, when the big hard-shells - scientific name Callinectes sapidus, which means beautiful swimmer - are not available locally, the leading purveyors fly them in from ports in the South. Unhappily, most visitors miss the best of Bawlmer eating. Taking the line of least resistance, they stop at the unfortunate mass feederies along the north side of the Inner Harbor, or at commercialized, gentrified crab houses like Obrycki's, or in Little Italy. Marty Katz, a Baltimore photographer and food critic who took the pictures that accompany this article, dismisses the copycat restaurants in that neighborhood as "our versions of Mamma Leone's." My nominee for the single best crab dish in Baltimore, if not the Western Hemisphere, is the jumbo lump crab cake at Faidley's Seafood in the Lexington Market, which was founded in 1782 and refurbished only recently. You eat it standing up, at a counter or at a table with no chairs. Nancy Faidley Devine, 67, makes every one herself, including those she ships by mail, and last Christmas week she shipped 2,800. "Other people handle the stuff too much," she told me, "and it ruins the cake's texture," the same way that overworking sometimes toughens a pie crust. In summer, Faidley's crab meat comes from packinghouses in Wingate and Crisfield, Md., farther down the bay, and in winter it comes from Texas, Florida and North Carolina. Mrs. Devine won't use imported crab meat - "pretty," she said, "but no flavor" - and she won't use pasteurized crab meat, because it has a flat, metallic taste. She said she watches carefully to make sure the meat contains plenty of yellowish "mustard," or fat, which is as important to the flavor of a crab cake as marbling is to the flavor of a sirloin. Faidley's sells a crab cake made fro
Re: [Chat] Welcome to Baltimore Sign--can you help?
These events unfolded while the General Assembly was in session that year, and some Baltimore lawmakers responded to the popular sympathy for the sign maker by proposing that "Hon" be officially added to the "Welcome to Baltimore" sign on the highway. (If it was 1994 then it was an election year, the first following the decennial redistricting, so many lawmakers were in a populist mood.) But the idea was shot down by African American legislators who pointed out that "Hon" is an _expression_ that is only found in the white community and would not be an appropriate _expression_ to represent a city of Baltimore's diversity. (The legislators who wanted to add it to the sign were all white.) I think it was then-Senator Larry Young whose counter-proposal was that "Bro" be added to the sign instead of Hon. And maybe there was a Jewish legislator who joked that a good compromise would be to have it say "Welcome to Baltimore, bubbala" or something along those lines. I know there were some articles about it in the Sun at the time, so you should look those up. And the owner of Cafe Hon in Hampden came down to Annapolis and distributed "Welcome to Baltimore Hon" mugs to all the legislators to support adding Hon to the sign and as a publicity stunt for the restaurant. I think I still have one of those in my cabinet. Anyway, obviously the legislative proposal never went anywhere after that, but it did receive considerable attention at the time. -Matthew In a message dated 8/24/06 9:21:20 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Mary, I live in Baltimore and remember news about the sign. [Chat] Monday, July 10 at 7 pm at VLP: Screening of new documentary about money and politics
Here is some information about a film screening at the VLP next Monday. "The Big Buy: How Tom DeLay Stole Congress" is a new documentary from Brave New Films, the film production house set up by Robert Greenwald, the producer/director behind "Wal Mart: The High Cost of Low Price", "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism," and "Uncovered: The War on Iraq". Following his now-standard model for releasing these highly charged films that would not be likely to find a large-scale distributor, the movie is being released across the country through home and community screenings sponsored by the organizations working on these issues, such as Common Cause, Public Campaign, the ACLU, and others. The screening in our area takes place at the Village Learning Place on Monday, July 10 at 7 pm. If you plan to come, please RSVP on the film's website at http://bigbuy.bravenewtheaters.com/screenings. The VLP is located at the former Enoch Pratt Library branch at 2521 St. Paul Street in Charles Village. You can read more about the film at www.tomdelaymovie.com. While the focus of the documentary is national, its topic relates directly to the efforts here in Maryland to enact public financing of state legislative elections, which for the first time this year passed the House of Delegates (HB 1054) and came out of committee in the State Senate (SB 569). We will have information at the screening about how to get involved in that effort. Please forward this e-mail to others who may be interested in this important topic. [Chat] Annapolis Action Alert - campaign finance reform - committee votes this week, floor votes to follow
Thursday and Friday last week were the House and Senate hearings on HB1054/SB569, this year's version of the legislation to make Maryland the fourth state in the nation to offer public financing for General Assembly election campaigns so as to reduce the undue influence that often accrues to big campaign contributors. Now is the time to send an e-mail to your state legislators urging their support for this bill. The committee votes will take place this week or next, and then the legislation will reach the floors of the House and Senate. Our latest vote count has us within a few votes of the magic number of 71 in the House of Delegates, so we need as many calls and e-mails to legislators as possible. You can get your legislators' e-mails on the General Assembly website at www.mlis.state.md.us, or you can use the easy web-based fill-in-the-blank legislator contact systems at http://www.commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=192850 (click on the link that says "Contact Your Delegates Now") or http://progressivemaryland.org/page.php?id=132. I will paste in below a sample message to legislators and some background information. Please forward this to others who might also support this important step toward enhancing democracy and social justice in Maryland. Thanks, Matthew Weinstein * Here is a sample message to legislators: Dear Senator/Delegate __: I support public financing of state legislative elections - SB569/HB1054. The status quo undermines public confidence in the integrity of the policymaking process while forcing legislators to spend time raising funds instead of addressing the needs of their constituents. As recommended by the Study Commission on Public Funding of Campaigns in Maryland, this reform, which includes a dedicated funding source, creates a voluntary alternative for candidates who can prove they enjoy broad public support. Please let me know if you will cosponsor and vote for this important bill. Sincerely, Name: __ Address: City/State/Zip: ___ Background information What is Clean Money Campaign Finance Reform? As enacted already in three states (Maine, Arizona, and late last year in Connecticut) Clean Money Campaign Finance Reform is a voluntary system of public financing of state legislative elections. It has already proven its ability to clean up politics and improve the basic workings on democracy by offering a voluntary alternative to relying on wealthy private interests to finance political campaigns. The status quo undermines the fundamental values of democracy, equality, and social justice by making legislators beholden to special interests rather than voters and taxpayers. For more details nationally, see www.publiccampaign.org. For details on how this year's Maryland proposal would work, read the HB1054 fiscal note at http://mlis.state.md.us/2006rs/fnotes/bil_0004/hb1054.pdf. Where do things stand in Maryland? House Bill 1054/Senate Bill 569 is before the 2006 General Assembly, which ends April 10th. This is the legislation that was recommended in 2004 by the official, blue-ribbon Study Commission on Public Funding of Campaigns in Maryland (read the commission report at http://mlis.state.md.us/other/ campaign_financing.pdf) and passed in 2005 by the House Ways and Means Committee. You can read the bills on the General Assembly website at www.mlis.state.md.us. Call, e-mail, or write your state legislators TODAY. Urge their support for HB 1054 and SB 569. Go to www.mlis.state.md.us to find your district and your legislators. Press coverage We had a press conference in Annapolis on Friday morning that generated this brief item at the end of an article in Saturday's Washington Post at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/04/AR2006030401190_pf.html: The Start of Public Funds for Campaigns? With all the competitive races in Maryland this election season and the requisite fundraising, advocates for the public financing of political campaigns believe their chances are greatly improved this session. Groups such as Common Cause and Progressive Maryland are starting small with legislative races. A bill sponsored by Sen. Paul Pinsky (D-Prince George's) and Del. Jon S. Cardin (D-Baltimore County) would create a voluntary system paid for with proceeds from the state's sale of unclaimed property. Most lawmakers, said Tom Hucker of Progressive Maryland, don't like fundraising. The measure would allow them to "spend more time with vo
[Chat] Banff Mountain Film Festival in Baltimore on March 10
Last night I went for the first time to something called the World Tour of the Banff Mountain Film Festival here in Salt Lake. It was a pretty cool experience, and it's coming to Baltimore on March 10th. The Banff Mountain Film Festival takes place in Canada at Banff every fall, made up of movies from all over the world about outdoor sports and recreation. Then the best films of the festival go on tour. This year's tour includes movies from three to 50 minutes about skiing, mountain climbing, cliff climbing, paragliding, whitewater kayaking, base jumping, biking, and others. Plus there was a very funny mock-documentary about the excesses of consumption and materialism among the American super-rich. I'll paste in below the info for March 10th and a couple of the associated websites. -Matthew www.banffmountainfestivals.ca www.banffmountainfestivals.ca/tour/ www.chestnutmtnproductions.com/banff/balthome.htm Banff Mountain Film Festival - Friday, March 10, 2006 - 7:30 pm Loyola College in Maryland McGuire Hall Baltimore, Maryland ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info
[Chat] Some good documentaries from Sundance this year
Eight of the 14 films I saw at Sundance this year were documentaries, and hopefully some of them will eventually see the light of day in one form or another. Apparently it can be a slow process; last year's big winner, "Why We Fight," is just now going into general release, a year later. But in case you are a fan of documentaries, here is the rundown on what I saw, plus a few I missed that I wish I had seen. -Matthew An Inconvenient Truth aka “Al Gore's PowerPoint about Global Warming.” (Though actually he uses Apple's Keynote instead of PowerPoint, but you get the idea.) It's the movie of the man who “used to be the next president of the United States,” as he likes to joke, giving his slideshow about climate change. He estimates that he has presented the slideshow over 1,000 times to audiences all over the world. It is so comprehensive and compelling that a documentary filmmaker decided to make a movie around it, and it is a spellbinding 90 minutes. In my experience, a well-presented slideshow really can transform how people think about a topic. If any slideshow is going to save us from this great crisis facing humanity, Gore's is the one. Truly a must-see PPT. All the data in one place to demonstrate that what we have already done to carbon levels in the atmosphere is radically outside the range of the natural variations seen over the last 650,000 years of earth's history -- and continuing to rise rapidly. It has lots of anecdotes and dramatic video, such as the drowning polar bears, the collapsing towers of ice, the melting Arctic and Antarctic ice, the disappearing glaciers (did you know there will soon no longer be a glacier in Glacier National Park, or an ice cap on Mt. Kilimanjaro?). He even has the graphics showing how the inhabited portions of South Florida (and other coastal areas from the San Francisco Bay to large populated areas in India and China) disappear under water when sea levels slowly and inexorably rise 20 feet because the Greenland ice sheet -- over 1,000 miles of solid ice up to two miles thick -- melts into the North Atlantic. www.ClimateCrisis.net (See also this recent front-page Washington Post article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/28/AR2006012801021.html) 5 Days A very complete documentary record of Israel's removal of all the settlers from Gaza last summer. The filmmaker had eight camera crews and complete inside access to the army, the settlers, the non-settler protestors, even the Palestinians living nearby. The most fascinating part for me was where the film cuts from the weary police officers sitting during a break talking amongst themselves about how brainwashed the settlers are to a group of weary settlers talking about how brainwashed the police are. The Israeli security forces were incredibly well prepared and showed amazing empathy and restraint, which is certainly a sharp contrast to how things went during the forced evacuation of settlers earlier this month at Amona in the West Bank. Wrestling with Angels: Playwright Tony Kushner Tony Kushner, who turns 50 this year, is one of America's great public artists. This fascinating documentary tells the story of his life so far, from growing up Jewish and gay in Louisiana to winning more awards and prizes (Tony, Emmy, Obie, Pulitzer) than one can count. I had seen both parts of “Angels in America” and own the children's book Brundibar that he wrote with Maurice Sendak, but I had no idea about so many other things he has done, for example his play “Homebody/Kabul” about Afghanistan and the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden that was already in rehearsal on that fateful day in September 2001. Black Gold A beautifully-shot film about coffee growers in the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia, and their struggles with the nameless, faceless global market forces that keep them impoverished, even as they produce some of the finest quality coffee in the world. Global coffee consumption has boomed in recent years, yet world prices have plummeted to pennies a pound, leading to malnutrition and disease throughout Ethiopia. The “Fair Trade” movement tries to boost the amount paid to the growers, and we follow the leader of a growers' cooperative as he travels Ethiopia and Europe to help his people. The film's weakness is on the policy side, where it wastes 10 minutes on the WTO's role in excluding African grain farmers from North American and European markets - an important point, but completely unrelated to coffee. Nonetheless, the film is a window into a world we seldom see - the lives of our fellow human beings somewhere thousands of miles away laboring to produce a commodity that we enjoy every day. KZ Many Holocaust documentaries examine the historical record, bringing us the voices of victims and survivors. Rex Bloomstein's latest work takes a different approach - looking at the Mauthausen concentration camp of today - the tourists, the to
[Chat] Gwynns Falls bike trail article from Sunday New York Times
Guilford Avenue's Halle Van der Gaag appears in this article about the Gwynns Falls Trail from the Travel section in Sunday's New York Times. -Matthew http://travel2.nytimes.com/2005/10/02/travel/02biking.html?8td=&emc=td&pagewanted=all Biking More on Biking DAY OUT Biking 14 Miles' Worth of Baltimore's Gentle Backroads and Mean Streets Marty Katz for The New York Times The Gwynns Falls Trail passes through Waterview Park in the Cherry Hill section of Baltimore. By JAMES DAO Published: October 2, 2005 THERE is a patch of the Gwynns Falls Trail in downtown Baltimore where a cyclist can feel dislodged from time and place. After winding past gas stations, parking lots and truck-clogged streets, the trail swerves into a waterfront oasis where tall grass and thick trees obscure a tangle of elevated highways to the east and a Greyhound bus station to the west. The sensation is like stepping off sun-baked pavement into an air-conditioned room: all is suddenly cool, quiet and calm. Forum: Travel in the News Marty Katz for The New York Times A mural marks the trail. Marty Katz for The New York Times Biking near Harbor Medical Center. There are many such moments along the recently completed 14-mile trail. Grandly ambitious, if sometimes imperfectly realized, the trail links eight city parks in 30 neighborhoods as it follows the Gwynns Falls stream along paved trail, dirt paths and city streets, starting from Leakin Park in western Baltimore to the tourist-packed Inner Harbor and ending along the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River. Along the way, it wends through just about every urban vista imaginable: silent woods and chattering streets, shut factories and clanking auto body shops, historic mansions and gritty row houses, Little League fields and M & T Bank Stadium, where the Baltimore Ravens play football. For Baltimore lovers and urban trekkers, it has proved a delight. "I can't believe it's so close to my home," said Dan Andersen, 26, a graduate student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, exploring the trail with a friend for the first time last June. "We've been looking for neighborhoods to bike in, and then we found this." But for casual bikers or newcomers to Baltimore, the trail can be confounding. Though it is clearly marked along its bucolic western stretches, first-time riders may have trouble finding trail blazes at some intersections. And when the trail moves completely onto city streets near the waterfront, trail signs and white bike-lane lines intermittently disappear. "People who don't know the city can feel insecure when they don't see those lines," said Penny Troutner, owner of Light Street Cycles and a member of a volunteer council that promotes the city-owned trail. The concept of a greenway linking Baltimore's parks to its harbor dates back at least to a 1904 report prepared by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., and his brother John Charles, sons of the landscape architect who designed Central Park. They wrote that Gwynns Falls Valley was an ideal greenway route because it offered sylvan scenery "seldom possible to retain so near a great city." Indeed, development encroached on many of those pastoral neighborhoods, and the Olmsteds' idea faded from memory. Until, that is, Christopher Rogers, a graduate student at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, rediscovered the plan in 1991. Inspired by the concept, a coalition of nonprofit groups began raising money from foundations, the federal government and the state of Maryland to acquire land, build bridges and pave the path. Fourteen years and $14 million later, the completed trail was unveiled in June. The biggest challenge was acquiring 12 properties and easements, said Halle Van der Gaag, a former project manager with one of those groups, the Trust for Public Land. Many acquisitions entailed lengthy negotiations with multiple owners. In one case, a bankruptcy proceeding was involved; in another, a driveway easement took 14 months to negotiate. And talks with CSX, the railroad company, dragged on for years before it allowed construction of several metal-and-wood bridges over its tracks. When I explored the trail this summer, I began my ride from the Winans Meadow trail head, the western endpoint. (The city plans to extend the trail a mile to the park-and-ride lot at Interstate 70 by 2006.) Easily reached from I-70, Winans Meadow - the former estate of Thomas Winans, a railroad magnate whose stone mansion is a short walk from the parking lot - has ample parking, a restroom and a covered picnic area adjacent to a spacious field. The trail here weaves through thick, silent forest. Only the distant sound of a trombone player pierced the quiet; a finch darted across my path. After a brief interlude on a public street, the trail turned onto a one-mile gravel and dirt path along what was once was a millrace that carried water to local factories. This section has been the source of controversy: road bikers and in-line skat

http://www.mddailyrecord.com/archives/5_190_wednesday/businessnews/165089-1.html Volume: 5 Â Number: 190_wednesday February 16, 2005 Business as usual at Peteâs New owner says no changes in store for diner By KARA KRIDLER Daily Record Business Writer Peteâs Grille, pictured above, has been a mainstay in North Baltimoreâs Waverly neighborhood for 25 years. Its new owner, who bought the business last year, said little will change at the breakfast hotspot. Photo by Max Franz Itâs been called a regular place where everyone is welcome, a plate of three pancakes and bacon is $5, a couple hundred regulars are called by their first names, and most recently where Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps got his 3,000-plus calorie breakfast while training. But for the first time in 13 years, Peteâs Grille, a mainstay in the Waverly neighborhood of North Baltimore, doesnât have Lou and Char Sharkey as fixtures. The Sharkeys gave up 3:30 a.m. wake-up calls late last month and handed over their spatulas, grills and waffle iron to new owners David Stahl and Darlene Castle. Stahl and Castle, long-time friends, officially bought Peteâs in August, but the Sharkeys stayed around until a few weeks ago. âPeteâs had a good feel when I came in here,â said Stahl. âIt seemed like a place that I would enjoy, and in fact, I really do. I think it is all about the people who come in.â Stahl was never a customer at Peteâs, located at 3130 Greenmount Ave., before buying the eatery. He said he stumbled across it in his search for a new business to buy. He did not disclose the sales price. Neither Stahl nor Castle has previous experience running a restaurant â not even a snack bar. Stahl was an information technology consultant for the past seven years. Prior to that, he owned an executive search firm. Castle was a mortgage banker. âI have always had my own business. â But the only cooking experience I have gotten was at [Peteâs]. Lou worked with me for the past [several] months,â Stahl said. Aside from losing Lou Sharkey, Peteâs head cook, Stahl has kept the exact same staff. âThe only difference is that now I am a cook,â he said. Stahl is accompanied by another cook who worked for the Sharkeys. Stahl said Peteâs has been âbusiness as usualâ since the Sharkeys left. âAnd this is our objective,â he said. Stahl plans to keep the same hours, same menu, same prices and the same overall feel at Peteâs. âNo changes are planned. This is a formula that works and I donât want to tweak it at all,â Stahl said. Even the annual pancake-eating contest is still scheduled for the fall. Customers have been very responsive to the way Peteâs is run, Stahl said. This is one of the reasons Stahl asked the Sharkeys to stay on for six months after the sale. âThis is a place with a strong relationship between the customers and the owners, which is very important,â Stahl said. âI wanted [the Sharkeys] to help transition those relationships â and it worked. We havenât missed a beat.â Stahl said he has even gotten used to rising before 4 a.m. âItâs really no problem at all. I thought it would be tough, but itâs not,â he said. The Sharkeys wanted to find an owner who would do a good job with the restaurant, said Winkie Campbell-Notar, manager of the Waverly Main Street, an initiative to revitalize the urban commercial district in the area where Peteâs is located. âPeteâs Grille is one of our destination businesses in Waverly,â Campbell-Notar said. âItâs a great restaurant that brings in folks from all over the city, county and even farther.â ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info

[Chat] Sundance report
One advantage of having your wife take a job in Salt Lake City is that they have this really great film festival every January. This was our fourth year in attendance. We saw 15 films, so I thought I'd share my impressions, since they generally get released one way or another in the course of the year. Documentaries Why We Fight The top documentary prize winner this year. An in-depth examination of American militarism. The film keeps returning to two themes: Eisenhower's 1961 farewell speech about the danger of the military industrial complex taking over our country and undermining our freedoms, and a retired New York City police officer whose son dies in the World Trade Center on 9/11/01 who initially supports the Iraq invasion until he realizes that the supposed connection to 9/11 was just White House media hype. The film doesn't offer much hope, mainly because it does such a great job of clarifying exactly how deeply entrenched the problem is. Mardi Gras: Made in China Ever wonder where those beads come from? Turns out it's a factory in China where teenage girls work 12-18 hour shifts six days a week for about a dollar a day. The director said it took years to get access to the place, where he interviewed the factory owner and the workers at great length, recorded their work and living conditions, etc. Nothing like seeing it with your own eyes. Really exposes exactly what globalism means. MardiGrasMadeinChina.com. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room The full story of the rise and fall from the people who were there. Inside Deep Throat My wife saw this one and loved it. The story of the people who made the porn classic from the 1970s. The films basically takes the view that pornography, at least in that period, was primarily about liberation rather than sexism or oppression. Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire Won the World Documentary Audience Award. Romeo Dallaire was the Canadian general who commanded the outnumbered, outgunned, underfunded UN military peacekeeping force in Rwanda in 1993 and 1994 prior to and during the genocide. It's the story of how the world stood by and did nothing while 800,000 people were slaughtered in 100 days. Powerful and deeply disturbing. Based on Dallaire's new book of the same name, which took him 10 years to recover enough from the experience to write. He's still deeply traumatized, and a controversial figure himself in some quarters -- mainly, it seems, among those who want to find someone convenient to blame for the tragedy. Rize Another one my wife saw -- about the latest dance craze keeping poor kids off the streets and out of trouble in South Central L.A. Dramatic Features 40 Shades of Blue This won the top jury prize. A slow, quiet film about the pain of the trophy wife on the arm of the great man. Me and You and Everyone We Know This was a really neat, funny movie about the crazy ways people try and fail and sometimes succeed at connecting with each other. I'm sorry the writer and director, performance artist Miranda July, wasn't at the screening to answer questions. Steal Me An engrossing story of what happens when a good family takes in a bad kid. I thought it was pretty well done. Kung Fu Hustle A Hong Kong kung fu movie played strictly for laughs. I enjoyed it almost as much as the people who got the references. Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School This was a sad and touching and ultimately satisfying love story between Robert Carlyle and Marisa Tomei. The weak point was that the filmmakers made it too easy at times for unhappy people suffering from deeply rooted traumas to achieve breakthroughs and overcome their pasts. But the two main characters were better done and well played. The Chumscrubber Teen angst and alienation beneath the well-tended surface of American suburban affluence and materialistic superficiality. The first-time director said it's based on his experiences growing up, and intended to carry out his father's directive that the best films are protest films. The Salon Made in Baltimore! Written and directed by Mark Brown, who wrote the Barbershop movies. I didn't see them, but from what I heard, this is more of the same, but set in a women's beauty shop this time. Nice light entertainment, with a heavy emphasis on talk about sex, race, and politics. One member of the audience said during the Q&A that the overuse of black stereotypes was offensive to her. Which is true, the movie relied very heavily on stereotypes, but I imagine that many of them will ring true for its intended audience. Also, the film had a tendency to get preachy -- you could easily pick out the moments when you knew you were hearing the writer's own point of view about one topic or another, from the mistreatment of gays in the black community to the need to educate young people about African American heroes. Obviously the filmma

Well, I'll paste in a few choice excerpts below, since they're so juicy. -Matthew >From http://archive.salon.com/ent/feature/2004/09/16/bleep/: At least one scientist prominently interviewed in the film now says his words were taken out of context. And two other key subjects in the film are not fully identified: a theologian who, the film fails to divulge, is a former priest who left the Catholic Church after allegations of sexual abuse; and a mysterious woman identified only as Judy "JZ" Knight, who is actually a sect leader claiming to channel a 35,000-year-old warrior spirit named Ramtha. The film's three co-directors are among those who follow Ramtha and look to Knight's channeled maxims to decipher the mysteries of life. These Ramtha followers reportedly number in the thousands. But critics call the sect a cult. In the movie, the 58-year-old Knight, whose accent is as thick as her mascara, makes the boldest statements -- pronounced with long, rolling R's -- about particles and God. "We have grrreat technology. But we still have this ugly, superrrstitious, backwahds cohncept of Gahd," she says, adding that "the height of arrogance is the belief of those who would see Gahd in their own image." Musing on the unity of consciousness and matter, she reminds us that "it only takes a fantasy for a man to have a harrrd-on." In her normal mode, Knight speaks the plain talk of her native Roswell, N.M., but in the manly presence of Ramtha, said to have conquered the continent neighboring Atlantis, Knight's jaw juts and her voice deepens into something magisterial and brash (view her here [http://ramtha.com/images/products/video/v1.40.ram]). Her Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, on a $2 million compound based in Yelm, Wash., boasts followers -- including celebrities like actress Shirley MacLaine (who attended Knight's seminars in the late '80s) and "Dynasty" star Linda Evans -- willing to pay up to $1,600 for a seminar. Reached by Salon, Meyer Gottlieb, president of Samuel Goldwyn Films, says he's seen "Bleep" about eight times. Its fledgling distribution company Roadside Attractions had its first real hit earlier this year when it launched festival favorite documentary "Super Size Me" and is hoping for a similar sleeper hit with " Bleep." Asked what he thought of the expressed desire by filmmaker Mark Vicente (on a Ramtha Web site, BeyondTheOrdinary.net) for his viewers to emerge from his movie in an "almost trance-like state," Gottlieb only laughed. David Albert, a professor at the Columbia University physics department, has accused the filmmakers of warping his ideas to fit a spiritual agenda. "I don't think it's quite right to say I was 'tricked' into appearing," he said in a statement reposted by a critic on "What the Bleep's" Internet forum, "but it is certainly the case that I was edited in such a way as to completely suppress my actual views about the matters the movie discusses. I am, indeed, profoundly unsympathetic to attempts at linking quantum mechanics with consciousness. Moreover, I explained all that, at great length, on camera, to the producers of the film ... Had I known that I would have been so radically misrepresented in the movie, I would certainly not have agreed to be filmed." "I certainly do not subscribe to the 'Ramtha School on Enlightenment,' whatever that is!" he finished. Albert provided Salon with an excerpt from a piece he's writing on the subject, in which he says, in part, "I'm unwittingly made to sound as if (maybe) I endorse its thesis." Knight's role as the voice of Ramtha is the most striking -- but hardly the only -- omission of the film, which could easily be interpreted as a full-blown infomercial for Ramtha. Two other on-screen experts are not identified as Ramtha associates: Dr. Joe Dispenza, chiropractor and mystic, listed as a student on the Ramtha Web site; and a man identified only as "Dr. Miceal Ledwith." Ledwith (at one time Monsignor Michael Ledwith) was once on track to be the next archbishop of Dublin, but the theologian stepped down as president of Maynooth College in 1994, after a complaint that he had sexually harassed a young seminarian. It was later revealed that Ledwith had allegedly paid an six-figure sum to a man who accused him of sexual abuse. Ledwith has maintained his innocence but left Ireland for the more placid confines of Monterey, Calif. On the "Bleep" Web site, Ledwith's relationship with the Catholic Church is only alluded to in a claim that he was once "charged with advising the Holy See on theological matters," but he is not identified as ever having been a priest, or even as a lecturer at the Ramtha school. [Chat] Re: [Discussion] car egging
Along those lines, I had the unpleasant experience of parking across the street from Donna's on 31st Street one day last week and returning to find my car s**t-bombed by what must have been dozens of birds. I don't know if boredom was the culprit in this case, or maybe they just don't like my brother's 1993 Accord, but I have never seen a car so covered with bird feces in such a short time. It was the south side of 31st directly across from Donna's, last space before the garage. Forewarned is forearmed. -Matthew In a message dated 1/4/05 3:31:03 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: While this is far less serious of a crime than what Christian described, I wanted everyone to know that my and at least one other car in the 3000 block of Guilford were "egged" on Sunday night. I heard that someone is buying 2907 Calvert, and the interesting thing is that she is selling her house in Mt. Washington to move here. I know of a few people who have sold houses here to move to Mt. Washington, but this is the first I've heard recently of the opposite phenomenon! -Matthew In a message dated 1/1/05 6:34:57 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi, Christine, On Sat, Jan 01, 2005 at 06:11:35PM -0500, crg wrote: > Emil, excuse me, but what is the AIA? [Chat] Re: Fw: ...sandwich board signs in CV...
This issue came up last year when a bunch of the CVCBD block captain volunteers worked on making more of those sandwich boards. Apparently they can technically be illegal, so we cautioned everyone to keep them out of the main flow of pedestrian traffic. That's easy enough to do, for example by putting them next to the tree wells instead of where people walk. No one had ever heard of the City issuing citations for them in the residential areas, and I think people appreciate having one on their block so they can keep up to date on meetings and so forth. -Matthew In a message dated 11/17/04 12:24:06 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Here is the word from the city on A-frame signs. Here are a few more sites worth checking daily. The Princeton site makes especially interesting reading -- esp some of the links to Charlie Cook and other analysts. The best insight is that Bush can't expcct to do better than his final poll number, while Kerry can expect to get about 4 points above his final number from undecided voters, so the key figure in the polls is not the spread between them but rather whether Bush is above or below 49-50%. http://www.race2004.net/index.php http://synapse.princeton.edu/~sam/pollcalc.html http://www.electoral-vote.com/ In a message dated 10/18/04 7:55:54 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/bush_vs_kerry.html the results of all the polls are listed here.
