No, I haven't touched the engine.. The previous owner had just had the
engine rebuilt before I got it... so I figured I'd wait until it died and
then I'd be forced to splurge on something I wanted in there... well the
stupid thing won't die :) It's worse than the energizer bunny... and I get
unbelievably low emmisions every year when I have to run it through the
sniffer.

I could just go ahead and put a new engine in there, but I feel like I'm
waisting a good, working engine... so I just haven't yet. The only thing I
did do was replace the Rochester 2 barrel carb with a Holley 2 barrel 500
cfm carb... and that really improved the performance.

As far as exhaust, I've had dual exhaust since I bought the car (too bad
they're 2 pipes), so I dunno how much that makes a difference. I've been
wanting to do the exhaust too, but I wanna hold out until after the engine
so I can get the big 3 pipes :)

 Rodney;

I am putting my 71 back together. New front end w/disc's and all, lots of
new parts on the 307 engine. Was planning on running it as is w/just dual
exhaust for a couple of years. Do you have any engine enhancements?..

BTW, have decided on the BFG TA's 235X60X15's.

 Thanks, Denny/GA

What MT slick did you buy? They have a 6.9tread width slick, #MTT-3012 for a
7 rim. Another alternative is a BF Goodrich drag TA. They have a 225/50R-15
at 5.5tread width. I've worked at Summit Racing and they have a pretty
extensive inventory/availability of about everything out there. Call them

[Chevelle-List] The 83 gets de-smogged

We did some work on Jana's Elky yesterday...found out it may have been a
six from the factory due to the one core radiator we found (unless they put
those in 305's). We removed everything but the computer. It seems to do
fine with the stock Quadrajet and distributor, so if it ain't broke...

The engine runs as smooth as silk now. We found a code on the motor which
the neighbor says means it's an '88 Goodwrench motor. We thought since the
fan shroud said 305 that it came with that motor, but it could have been
from another car (I can't imagine a factory 305 with a one core radiator).

Anyway it was a full days work to get all that EPA crap out of the
car...looks cleaner now and runs a lot smoother...should run cooler now as
well.

[Chevelle-List] Speedo gear

First of all, thank you to everyone that has helped me with all of my
questions recently. I finally get the '66 out of storage, and now I bombard
the list with questions!
Here's the next one: I changed the gears from 3.08s to 4.88s a few years
ago, and never changed the speedo gear. The transmission places around here
say that there is a formula, but they don't know it. They want to sell me a
few gears and just do trail and error. Maybe that would be fine, because it
really doesn't have to be dead-on, but does someone know the formula?
I have a Turbo400, and am running 245/60R14s.

Thanks!

them that you may be referring to.

Not sure if you know this already or not, but I got this off of the website
too. The gear ratios for your tranny.
Gear ratios;

First; 2.48, Second; 1.48, Third; 1.00

I have learned a lot from the web site.
Hope this helps,

Alright another desmogged vehicle. I remember doing it to my 86 Cutlass.
Tore off every piece of emission control junk, gutted the converter, and
ripped off about 3000 vacuum line. also replaced the distributor/carb with
one from an older non computer controlled car. Made the car run alot better,
better gas mileage too beleive it or not. This made the chevy engine
transplant much easier last december. I just have to hope i don't get
checked at a motor vehicle checkpoint. Think it may be time to move out of
NJ soon :) The funny thing is the 350 I dropped in the car has lower
emissions than the 307 I took out of the car.

Thanks for the not so good news. We are
interviewing restoration shops that do heavy
interior and convertible work. Met with a nice fellow
yesterday who was pleased to show off the 57 bel air
he had just finished. Primo work. He seems to know
his stuff re top frames and their adjustment. The
windows need a lot of adjustment too, so he would call
in a glass man he knows with lots of experience. With
a new top, he's quoting $1200. Good (or bad) thing
about this guy, is that he is a lone wolf. He
operates out of his set-up at his home. He does not
have all the trappings of a businessman. He takes his
time and is not really pinched for the time/profit
perspective. We will look to see others of his
finished jobs before deciding anything. The other 2
candidates were closed for the duration of the 4th
holiday and will not be available till after the 9th.
Wish I had the time to devote to this myself, but...

Anyway thanks for the input. I am sure your tips will
come in very handy pretty soon.

No help in finding a shop that will/can do it in
your area (or any other for
that matter unfortunately). I just went through this
 same issue with my 66
ragtop. The front window would hit the top rail
gasket if you tried to shut
the door with the glass rolled all the way up. This
 prevented the door from
closing properly and bulged the top of the window
 out when it did close.
Turned out to be a couple of alignment issues
 causing the problem. I asked
for some input, but there was very little, thus I
 will share the alignment
 procedure that I decided upon.
1-Remove rear seat and well covers to expose the
 springs and adjustment
 bolts.
2-Drop the top and make sure that your front and
 rear windows are aligned to
one another along the top edge as well as where they
 meet.
3-Put the top up and see where the low spots are
 (where the top hits the
 windows excessively).
4-Withdraw the set screw along the top rails to
adjust the level of the top
along the glass. If it's still too low, you need to
 raise the top frame
 until it clears.
5-This is done on each side with a nut that holds
 two splined (grooved)
rails together. Loosen the nut and force the top up
 or down as needed. It
will be difficult, but it will not break anything.
6-Re-tighten the nut and fold the top up again to
 check your progress.
7-If this doesn't give you all the adjustment that
 you need, there are 3
bolts that hold the top frame to the car. If you
 loosen the bolts and lift
up on the frame it will move to give more play. Too
far and you will have a
huge gap between the glass and top when you latch it
 closed.
8-Continue to play with these adjustments until it
 is close, then try the
set screw again to fine tune the rail along the
 glass.

This is how I did it, my door closes like it was
 new again. No more
keeping the glass rolled down to close the door. I
 only adjusted one side at
a time. I was fearful of having both sides slip way
 out of alignment and
then having to go find a professional.
 Good Luck.
 Dan

There is no better way to decide than to look at their work and talk to
their customers. In your part of the country having a non-leaking top should
be very important to keep the rest of the car from rusting out! Be sure to
get a few BEFORE AFTER shots that you can either post or email. I'd be

interior and convertible work. Met with a nice fellow
yesterday who was pleased to show off the 57 bel air
he had just finished. Primo work. He seems to know
his stuff re top frames and their adjustment. The
windows need a lot of adjustment too, so he would call
in a glass man he knows with lots of experience. With
a new top, he's quoting $1200. Good (or bad) thing
about this guy, is that he is a lone wolf. He
operates out of his set-up at his home. He does not
have all the trappings of a businessman. He takes his
time and is not really pinched for the time/profit
perspective. We will look to see others of his
finished jobs before deciding anything. The other 2
candidates were closed for the duration of the 4th
holiday and will not be available till after the 9th.
Wish I had the time to devote to this myself, but...

Anyway thanks for the input. I am sure your tips will
come in very handy pretty soon.

No help in finding a shop that will/can do it in
your area (or any other for
that matter unfortunately). I just went through this
  same issue with my 66
ragtop. The front window would hit the top rail
gasket if you tried to shut
the door with the glass rolled all the way up. This
  prevented the door from
closing properly and bulged the top of the window
  out when it did close.
Turned out to be a couple of alignment issues
  causing the problem. I asked
for some input, but there was very little, thus I
  will share the alignment
  procedure that I decided upon.
1-Remove rear seat and well covers to expose the
  springs and adjustment
  bolts.
2-Drop the top and make sure that your front and
  rear windows are aligned to
one another along the top edge as well as where they
  meet.
3-Put the top up and see where the low spots are
  (where the top hits the
  windows excessively).
4-Withdraw the set screw along the top rails to
adjust the level of the top
along the glass. If it's still too low, you need to
  raise the top frame
  until it clears.
5-This is done on each side with a nut that holds
  two splined (grooved)
rails together. Loosen the nut and force the top up
  or down as needed. It
will be difficult, but it will not break anything.
6-Re-tighten the nut and fold the top up again to
  check your progress.
7-If this doesn't give you all the adjustment that
  you need, there are 3
bolts that hold the top frame to the car. If you
  loosen the bolts and lift
up on the frame it will move to give more play. Too
far and you will have a
huge gap between the glass and top when you latch it
  closed.
8-Continue to play with these adjustments until it
  is close, then try the
set screw again to fine tune the rail along the
  glass.

This is how I did it, my door closes like it was
  new again. No more
keeping the glass rolled down to close the door. I
  only adjusted one side at
a time. I was fearful of having both sides slip way
  out of alignment and
then having to go find a professional.
  Good Luck.

Hi, all. I am new to the list and would like to
  ask
for a referral if anyone has one for me. I have a
  69
Malibu ragtop. The windows and top do not meet
properly and the rubber has been improperly
  positioned
in the top frame to try to over come this. I
  really
need to get this all re-done. Does anyone have
  the
name of a COMPETENT top shop in the
  Bremerton/Tacoma
Washington area that does really good good work.
   Thanks
