Re: [Chevelle-List] My car is for sale

2002-10-29 Thread Jim Weimer

If it is all original why is there overspray
underneath of the car? Also...I don't think untouched and touch-up paint should
be in the same sentence together either.Evedentally SOMEONE touched it if there
are door dings in it.  :)

mustang in the converstation, and then most importantly, state that it is all
original and untouched (he can't stress enough times that it is original and
untouched).  You ask what he likes, i guess it's mustangs.  My dad's
old friends are always shocked that he got a ford, and you know why?
They were talking to me when he wasn't there, and they said on how much he
bashed fords around back in the old days, and they say the funny thing is now
that he BOUGHT a ford.  Lol.  It's not that he doesn't CARE for the
car, he just wants to see it shiney and stock.  Every time an old car
drives past us, he always says somehting like, did you see that left quarter
panel, it looked wavy, and I'm like, what the hell, I just gave him a thumbs
up, and was woah, great kool car!  I didn't look for no damn
imperfections, for god's sake.  He likes some cars, his favorite is a 70
Goat.  But it has to be a "good deal" and original or he ain't gonna get
it.  Also, another funny thing is, that when he dropped that mustang at
the show for people to look at it, he was worried about people stealing
it!?  I look around, and there's an 11,000 mile original LS-6 and then

Totally agree.  Just curious when your dad went to
car shows, did he ever SHOW a car or just criticize others? Doesn’t like Malibu’s, not excited
about an original SS, and doesn’t care for an AAR Cuda.  What does he like?  Sounds like he’s

Re: [Chevelle-List] Disc brake conversion questions

2002-10-29 Thread Herbert Lumpp
Hi Brian,

You're correct, if you have manual brakes, the rod goes in the top hole of
the brake pedal arm, power brakes and the rod goes in the lower hole.

The reason for this is if you have manual brakes, by putting the rod in the
top hole you will have more "mechanical leverage" to apply the brakes. With
power brakes you don't need as much leverage, hence putting the arm in the
lower hole.

As for the master cylinder having the same size reservoirs, typically the
unequal size is for a disc/drum system and the equal size is for disc/disc.

Re: [Chevelle-List] My car is for sale

2002-10-29 Thread Chad P.

My point exactly.  You pulled the words right
out of my mouth.  I have respect for every old car there is, because of the
money people put into it, and also, man, its a beauty and a classic.  I
love them all - not just chevelles.  There was also a 72 Nova, all tubbed
and backhalved at this show in oakmont, and he didn't say anything to the owner,
but told me "look at that peice of S#** over there," and I turned my head
towards it expecting it to be rusted out and stuff, and it was a SHINEY
beautiful Nova SS clone Drag car.  I asked the owner what it did, the best
times were 7.34.  Now that is no peice of s*** there!  I never bother
explianing to him that these cars deserve appreciation.  My cousin bought a
67 Cougar - pretty cool, w/ a 340? and 4 speed.  We (relatives and I) were
talking to my cousin about it, and commenting on how nice it is.  it is
brown.  My dad was the only one not near the car not talking to
him cause the car didn't have the original engine in it.  Also, when
we got home, he was saying that cougars are dumb and who the hell cares about
cougars.  I said "I do" and he never replied.  I also have a pretty
cool story about this guy who got a 69 Judge.  same car show (pretty big

Re: [Chevelle-List] Storing on jackstands

2002-10-29 Thread Herbert Lumpp
In all honesty, if you want to store your car on jack stands so your tires
don't get flat spots, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you have
modern radials, any flat spots from sitting will go away within the first
couple miles of driving after storage.

Besides, what if your house catches on fire, you won't have time to get your
Chevelle off the jack stands and out of the garage! I say keep it on the
tires, you never know!

Just talked to my parents - mom is all for
it!  dad however just blew up and we got into a big ass fight.  I
don't say nothing, and he just this and that.  The problem with him is that
he HAS to like the car I'm getting (meaning that even if the car is good
condition, he may not like the "car" itself, if you know what i mean), and I
don't get why he needs to even like the car i'm getting.  It just needs to
be drivable and good looking.  He pretty much from what I can tell, doesn't
like malibu's or even SS clones - he's an original freak, when he went to the
car shows, he just totally put the people down w/o the original engines and
non-original tires - totally put them down.  But there was this one 1970 SS
w/ original everything, untouched red w/ stripes, and he didn't flip for it, but
rathered be there with that car.  he just is irratating at the car shows
cause of that.  There was a guy with an original AAR cuda - perfect
restoration, and so on...and the guy said that the car was worth at least 30
grand.  And I didn't say nothing (i don't like people bragging about how
much their car is worth), but my dad said, "so what, It's not important to
me."  I swear, the guy was about to clock him.  Sorry for

RE: [Chevelle-List] Motor Mount /winter project

2002-10-29 Thread Tom Tomlinson
Bill:
Yes, I've thought about pulling the motor and detailing the
engine/compartment. I do have some friends that have more mechanical
experience that I do. The main problem is the engine hoist; I don't own one.
Maybe I could rent one, but my car is stored in the basement of a cottage in
upstate NY, and once the snow flies, there is no way to get anything large
into the basement when the drive-in door gets snowed in. If I rent it now,
it will probably be locked in all winter. But maybe I'll look into it. The
engine has a chrome timing chain cover and oil pan that have always leaked,
and it would be the easiest way to clean everything up. The other problem is
that I have other things to do on the car, steering coupler, master
cylinder, ..., and the project can't be so large that it will take me past
April. The car HAS to be done by spring so I can drive it. The cottage is a
great place to work, however, as it has a furnace and I can get away for a
weekend and work in peace.

Also, for those of you asking about storing on jack stands, I've stored my
car on stands for the last 3 years withno problems. I only lift the car high
enough to "relax" the suspension and prevent flat spots on the tires. I
believe this was suggested in the winterization procedure on the
chevelles.com website.

Thanks to all for the safety and other hints.

Tom

If you are putting the car away for the winter...have you thought about a
winter project? If you pull the motor, its really easy to fix the oil pan
and
motor mounts, but its also a great time to clean/paint the engine and the
engine compartment and to replace the motor mounts and anything else while
you are there. Its a messy job, but looks great after.

I would also recommend getting help from someone who has done this BEFORE
you
start...just thinking out loud

Summit or Jegs sells the Wilwood adjustable prop valve for around $40 +
shipping. Then you can dial it in if you have bigger tires than stock or
your weight distribution is different. So it will probably be a wash buying
it at the local speed shop. I have a couple of the original GM 71-72 Monte
disc/drum prop valves in the garage if I could ever find them. I think they
may be in the closet next to the 3D-BB. B-)

Title: Message

The offset shafts help,
but don't completely work.  I used them before GW made their custom arms
and I went through a set of tires a bit more quickly.  I'm not saying you
can't do it, only that you will have accelerated tire wear because you can't
completely align the car.  I'm sure the problem is less with narrower
tires, so you might be able to minimize the wear with less aggressive
tires.  I had 255/50/16 tires when I did the swap.

If finances are the
issue, do the swap now, and budget for a future upgrade to the custom A-Arms
(and possibly tires).  I max handling is not the concern, use the A-Body
parts for the swap instead of the F-Body tall spindles and it will be cheaper
overall.

sweet... wish I new that a few weeks ago looking through the junkyard

guess. I have been debating about how to swap to front discs... been a hard
to decide whether or not to do the long spindle swap as it will cost a bit
more since I'd need the Global west arms.

[Chevelle-List] Not starting and related woes

2002-10-29 Thread the . cat
Hey!

So, I have just finished installing a 2004R trans, complete with
lockup converter and B&M controller, as well as a floor-mounted
shifter.

Now it won't start. The solenoid won't even click! I did bypass the
stock column-mount neutral and backup light switches - are there any
tricks I need to know about for those? I identified them using a
wiring diagram, so I'm sure that I don't have them mixed up. Do I
need to use the switeches on the column for anything? I just removed
the plugs to the wire harness and connected the shifter-mounted
switches.

However, I turn the key, and the idiot lights go out, but nothing
happens. I have checked the connections, and they're clean. I even
hooked up two batteries, and had just charged them both, so I'm sure
that is ok.

What have I not done?

Thanks,
Dave.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6

2002-10-29 Thread Dale McIntosh
Ah, yes Craig but IF you sold it, you'd sell it as a real SS and not a
Malibu clone and get more money for it, right? There's just the
mystique of the "SS" badging and that's what makes people built their
own fakes, clones, whatever name you wish to use. Unfortunately, the
same is becoming true of LS-6 cars. It's the "LS-6" mystique. People
even promote their cars as LS-6's when it's really (just?) a 454, bored,
rectangle heads, Edelbrock, Holley, MSD, and Hooker equipped. Where did
the LS-6 portion go?

This mystique in both is what catches the uninformed off guard and the
informed critical of such claims. I'm quite certain that if the car in
question on eBay was "advertised" as a 454, 4-speed, SS car only, it
would sell easily in the low to mid 20s. Being an "LS-6", even though
not correct in every respect has gotten someone's fever up to bid over
$35K. Considering what true, documented, correct LS-6's are going for,
a few cosmetic errors such as incorrect exhaust, valve covers wrong, or
even the power brake booster not plated correctly could easily be
~fixed~ for the additional value potential.

The point I was making is that I don't think you can tell whether it's
real or not. It's possible to forge a Guttenberg bible and a $100 bill.
A build sheet would seem child's play. I mean, you can buy VIN tags,
cowl tags, and even the little tape wrap that they used to put on your
rear axle - and you can't tell it from the real thing. Why people bet
$40k on a build sheet is beyond me.

More to the point - all that GM did to create an SS in 1970 was add some
options - like adding the DVD player to my wife's minivan. What makes it
such a bad thing to do so today? Why NOT just take an ordinary Malibu
and turn it into an SS. The end result is exactly the same - 100%
exactly the same - except in the mind of the owner. Personally, I don't
have a problem with this. Moreover, I don't think anyone needs to
explain that that is what they did. I am pretty sure my car is an
original SS because I have the VIN data from GM in Canada. But let's be
real - I'm in Michigan and there are more non-original parts on that car
than you can shake a stick at. Fenders, inner fenders, door skins,
quarter panels - even the HOOD for pete's sake. Not to mention springs,
rotors, axle shafts, rear end gears, exhaust, radiator, alternator, AC
pump, seat covers, shocks, bushings, tie rods, tires, wheels, pistons,
cam, rockers, carb, valves, clutch, driveshaft. The whole stupid car
seems to have been replaced (and I've got the receipts to prove it).
But, when I dump the clutch at 4k, I can't tell if those parts are
original or not - too much tire smoke to see clearly.

While not having any part numbers for verification, I believe the
proportioning valve is specifically designed for a particular mass/weight
distribution/brake size combination. A camaro would be calibrated
differently than a chevelle, even though it would mount the same. This
would affect brake lock-up points. YOu could potentially use an adjustible
valve to account for this, but since you have stock type brakes, you should
be able to get by with a stock proportioning valve. (unless you've

I've heard that by using the offset a-arm shafts, you can
do the tall spindle swap with only a minimal amount of shimming.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Disc brake conversion questions

2002-10-29 Thread GLENN BAILEY
While not having any part numbers for verification, I believe the
proportioning valve is specifically designed for a particular mass/weight
distribution/brake size combination. A camaro would be calibrated
differently than a chevelle, even though it would mount the same. This
would affect brake lock-up points. YOu could potentially use an adjustible
valve to account for this, but since you have stock type brakes, you should
be able to get by with a stock proportioning valve. (unless you've
significantly changed the rake of the car &/or relative ft/rear tire sizes,
in which case the adjustible valve might still be a good idea)

Got new master cylinder, brake hoses, bearings, seals and rotors. Also
rebuilt loaded calipers and power booster. When I tried to get the

Looked the same. Is it? Next, When I had it all installed, I hooked the
power booster rod in the bottom hole on the brake pedal and it sits quite a
bit closer to the floor. and I had to adjust the brake light switch all the
way in so it would contact the pedal. Is this too far down? I havent
measured, but I think it has about 2 - 2 1/2" of travel. Also, the master

Greg I was the one who mentioned the JACK stand problem. You Can use jask
stands if thay support the car
under the A arms in the front and the rear axle tubes in the rear. The
problem is guys tend to support the car in the cowl area and the frame just
behind the gast tank.
A body cars are FLEXABLE and when supported in this fasion they were not
ment to be for long periods of time , the frame flex becomes memorized.

Bob, it's plastis so more care is needed B-4
spraying.
If you have no scratches, it becomes a cleaning
job,  All the years of dirt and cleaner need to be removed. scrub with a
brush and DAWN detergent and  then when you rinse it off WASH it again.
also take your  plastic glove box emblem ( if your has one) and prep it the
same way.
I have used argent silver ( rattle can ) in
tha past. After paying attention to the recoat time,  I then dusted it
with clear.
It kind of give it that simi gloss
apperence.
Then use a Testers hobby  paint pen to detail
the leters and script.
It's not VCCOA correct but IT
WORKS.

If you look way up on the top of the pedal post, there are 2 holes for the U

shaped brakcet. It is supposed to be on the top one. I made that mistake
when I pulled the booster off mine top refinish it and then reisntalled it.

I had a hell of a time bleeding it for that reason until I looked up and
said, oh DUH!!! If it is on the bottom one it will put the actuator rod on
an angle and pull the pedal closer to the floor.

[Chevelle-List] Disc brake conversion questions - "Circle Track" A arms?

2002-10-29 Thread Chevelle 69
Title: Message

One of the guys in my car
club told us about these "circle track" A arms that are only about $100 each.
They are adjustable, but don't have stops. I am not comfortable with this guy's
solution of using a chain myself, so I may try to come up with something else.
That $400 Global West and Hotchkiss wants is more than a cheapskate like me is
willing to pay. I probably will go with their ball joints & connecting rods
though. There is only so much "Mickey Mouse" I am willing to do in order to be
the cheapskate I am. Have to have quality too, that's where I draw the line,
quality to do the job right and safety.

http://groups.msn.com/70MonteCarlo/tallspindle.msnw

Anyone have any experience
with these?

Ok. Did my conversion this last weekend to power disc brakes from manual
drums. Got the setup from a 70-72 Monte. I used the replaceables as cores.
Got new master cylinder, brake hoses, bearings, seals and rotors. Also
rebuilt loaded calipers and power booster. When I tried to get the
proportioning valve off the doner, I just had to cut the brake line to the
rears and I could never get the line off. So, I wound up going to the only
junkyard in town who said they had one and it wound up being from a camaro.
Also, the master
cylinder they sold me has equal sized resevoirs. I thought most I've seen
had the larger front resevoir and smaller rear one. When I stop it slows
down with normal pressure and then seems to really grab at a certain point.
So I have to be real careful as to not put myself through the windshield.
Could be just needing more bleeding? any other thoughts an any of the
questions?

Re: [Chevelle-List] Dash paint

2002-10-29 Thread Richard Milkiewicz

Bob, you want to use a lacquer paint for you
interior plastic. Wash in mild soap. If you can, soak it overnight first in
soapy water, then wash and rinse really good. You should also use a good
wax and grease remover just before painting. You can buy the paint at an auto
paint store in pints, quarts. Or you can get it in a spray can from any of the
restoration places. All the paint shops should have a catalog
with the paint codes by year. Also anyone
interested in painting their frame, brackets, engine bay, etc. check this site
out.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6

2002-10-29 Thread Krister Meister

"original" is a tough word - in the true sense it's something that was been
untouched since it was made. A more forgiving term "restored to original"
leaves the opportunity refurbish to maintain the original look. Taking
something and modifying to look like something else is our familiar "clone"
term or replica. Some people are fine with this - it's a knock off of the
real thing, but passing it off as the real thing is where the problem lies.
There is a certain value to knowing "this is what it looked like when it
rolled off the line". An entire Model A can be built out of a catalog, but
it wouldn't be right to call it a "survivor"?.

Back to point - to many people get screwed by misrepresented cars.

The whole point in owning one was to goose it somehow. The only guys

You have a very good point there. We all try to look for that originality
but then we spent mega bucks for repairs over the years and we still claim
"original".

[Chevelle-List] Disc brake conversion questions

2002-10-29 Thread Brian Zack
Also, the master
cylinder they sold me has equal sized resevoirs. I thought most I've seen
had the larger front resevoir and smaller rear one. When I stop it slows
down with normal pressure and then seems to really grab at a certain point.
So I have to be real careful as to not put myself through the windshield.
Could be just needing more bleeding? any other thoughts an any of the
questions?

The car is a 71 Chevelle Malibu 350 4 barrel. The

At what RPM should the timing start advancing?
(900,1200,1400RPM)
At what RPM should it reach when it hits Total
advance? (Total advanced reached at 2000RPM??)
How much total advance should I have?

I am wanting to play with the weights and springs in
the distributor and l am looking for some guide lines. I was going to hook

and springs. I think that my distributor is advancing way too

RE: [Chevelle-List] Motor Mount Replacement

2002-10-29 Thread Dale McIntosh

Replacing only the mounts should be easy
enough.  Follow Haynes advice so
nothing gets broken when you jack up the engine.  The headers may not have to come out but
may need to be undone to get the desired movement when the engine is raised.  Trans mount or shifter shouldn’t be
a problem.  I’ve used a 2x4
block under the pan to jack the engine up to change mounts before.  If you can get it up enough to insert
another 2x4 block between the engine and the frame for added security while
changing the mount, all the better.
Sometimes it’s easier to remove the tire/wheel and get to the
mount through the fenderwell – depends on the
car naturally.

Replacing the pan might be a bit more
effort as you’d have to (1) get the crank indexed so the balancer mark is
at the 6 o’clock position, (2) jack the engine up via the balancer with 3”
clearance between pan and crossmember, (3) remove
fuel pump, (4) still have very little room to replace the pan without
disturbing the gaskets.  It can be
done according to my Chilton’s.

While putting away my Malibu for
the winter, I noticed one of the motor mounts looked to be cracked. The oil pan
has also been dented from the previous owner, so I thought I would do some
repairs this winter.

My question is, how hard is it to
raise the engine to get at the mounts and oil pan?

The car is a '71 Malibu 350 with 4
speed Shaginaw and Hooker headers which I use as a daily driver in the summer.
The Haynes manual says to take the distributor cap off, the fan shroud, exhaust
cross over (which for me means the headers I assume), dust cover and starter
motor. It makes no mention of disconnecting the rear motor/transmission mount.
Does this have to be disconnected? Will I have problems with the shifter and/or
transmission clearance? Is it safe to jack the engine from underneath if I'm
careful not to dent the new oil pan? Are NAPA motor mounts ok?

Any tips for a novice Chevelle
mechanic much appreciated.

If you are putting the car away for the winter...have you thought about a
winter project? If you pull the motor, its really easy to fix the oil pan and
motor mounts, but its also a great time to clean/paint the engine and the
engine compartment and to replace the motor mounts and anything else while
you are there. Its a messy job, but looks great after.

I would also recommend getting help from someone who has done this BEFORE you
start...just thinking out loud

I've had my 70 LS6 since 1972 I and I'm amased at how few LS6 I come across
and the few that are "LS6" are " well it used to be"... or ..."crate
engine"... or I think it is because its a big blocketc.

In 1973 when I got married, I tried to trade it in for a new "family" type
carThank God it was during the "gas crisis" and as soon as the salesman
saw it he laughed and said he could only give me a few hundred for it. It was
a good enough excuse for me to keep the beast 'cause I kinda felt that it
might be worth something some day.

Now there must be 10,000 LS6 running aroundthey are all over the
place...so buyer be ware does apply.
