depends on how many $$$ you are willing to spend.

I have used Harland Sharp on two engines now and are happy.
I have also tried the comp cams that Herb reccomend, I was happy of them too
but they are half the price nearly.
I dont think the aluminum full rollers will fit under a stock walve cover
but the roller tip will.

Your choice.

It has been recommended to me by the shop guy who just

roller rockers for them. I was looking at the Crane

if anyone had any feedback they could provide about

Thanks again guys, you have no idea how much you are

Larry, I cant imagine why that would require major
modifications. The rear quarter panels are the same except that 69 has
rear marker lights, and the tailgates are the same. The 70-72 tail lamp lenses
also appear to be very similar in shape to the 68-69 lenses. The main
difference is that from 70-72 the tail lamp bezels had a little reflective
strip down the side, so the lens was a little bit narrower. The 70-72 lens is
also a bit concave on the inside whereas the 68-69 lens is convex. It seems to
me that a set of 1969 bezels lenses would fit right onto a 1972 w/ no
problems, but you would need to change both the bezels and the lenses.

[Chevelle-List] 1969 El Camino Custom vs. Standard

2003-02-02 Thread John Nasta
Here's what I know so far about the differences between the 69 El Camino
Custom vs. Standard.

The custom has:

Malibu interior (well half of it)

Malibu grill

Wood-grain on tailgate

Different tail light bezels (exactly what's different I'm not sure, but they
are different part numbers)

Does anybody else know of anything else that the El Camino Custom got and
the Standard did not?

Mine originally had front bumper guards on it as well, but I don't think
those were necessarily on all of the Customs.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Another El Camino Puzzle ?

2003-02-02 Thread John Nasta

One minor correction. I just looked at my 1969 bezels
and they are not convex on both sides of the lens. They are convex on the long
side and flat on short side. The 70-72 bezels look like they are concave on the
long side and flat on the short side. I don't have a pair of those here though.
I'm judging from a picture. I believe the long side is the outside.

So,
just for the heck of it, I opened up my Chevrolet El Camino Photofacts book,
and there's a rear 3/4 shot of a 72 on page 39, and the tail lamps sure as heck
look like 69's to me. It's definitely not a 69 either, because there are no
rear marker lights and I can see enough of the front to be able to tell that
it's different.

Thanks Dale, that's awesome. I have the restoration kit and have been
looking at it from here. I was very surprised to learn that only the Custom
got the lower side moldings and that they all had Cortez Silver paint below
the moldings. I decided to go w/ the short eyebrow moldings and no side
moldings on mine even though it's a Custom. I guess I'll be skipping the
silver paint then too. I also have an SS hood on it but it has a 283 in it
and no SS badges. I'm not worried about originality on this one, but I'm
always interested in this kind of stuff.

Here's some...the Custom got the following regular equipment where the
Standard did not. There are also options that the Standard did not have
access to that the Custom did. Disclaimer: Information from the GM
Restoration Kit.

1. Medium blue interior (code 761-bench) whereas the custom (136) got
dark blue (codes 764-bench/765-bucket), no bucket seat option (A51) and
no sport shift lever option (M08).

2. Body side lower molding - front fender, doors rear quarter. (The
Standard got a rocker panel molding instead.)

3. Cortez silver below body side lower molding.

4. Body side twin paint stripes.

5. Bright roof drip gutter molding.

6. Bright door frame scalp molding.

7. Black paint filled rear end panel or tailgate molding.

8. Tailgate wood-grain insert between tailgate moldings.

9. Radiator grille bright center molding.

10. Concealed windshield wipers with articulated left blade.

11. Bright windshield molding with wide lower molding. (Standard got a
narrow lower molding.)

12. Silver-painted rear view mirror support.

13. Front seat cushion, 1.75 foam pad. (Standard got a 1.25 foam
pad.)

14. Carpet passenger compartment. (Standard got vinyl coated rubber
covering.)

15. Glove compartment light. (Could be ordered in a standard with the
ZJ9 auxiliary lighting group.)

16. Instrument panel right side molding and nameplate.

17. Deluxe front seat (A39) and shoulder (A85) belts not available with
standard.

18. Standard front seat shoulder harness (AS1) not available on
standard.

19. Gauges, instrument panel (U14) not available on standard but the
tachometer (ACC) was.

20. Power windows (A31) not available on standard.

Front bumper guards (V31) were optional on all Chevelle models and not
part of the Custom upgrade. Naturally, neither could get the rear
guards G.

Found some Car And Driver reviews, and stock tire
size was listed!!
7.50-14..converts to P215/70/R14

not sure what the caliper baskets are, but it was the rear F body discs I was talking about. They are a direct bolt on to 10 12 bolt axles without any modifications. I'll be doing this upgrade to my 70 when I eventually get another 12 bolt and rebuild it, then I'll be doing the B-Body 12" rotor upgrade also.

What brought the question up in my mind was I have a P-O-P for a
70 Chevelle that shows the engine and rear end built in October, the
transmission in January but the car now being assembled until March. I
just figured that's quite a difference in timefor the components - 5
months in the case of the engine and rear end. However, the major strike
(by local 95) wasn't until later that year in September. Maybe it's just a
fluke?

BTW, I want to thank all that have contributed photos of trim tags
and P-O-Ps so far for a new, upcoming Chevelle information site. Still
missing some years, so any donations welcome!

Title: Message

I've been following this thread and thought I'd add my two cents...

Being in the military means I move quite a bit and having a bunch of cars
makesmoving an interesting experience.

Instead of paying a moving company to move my cars I looked into renting a
U-haul (junk) trailer. U-haul wanted $700+ for a one way rental.
Since I needed to move 3 cars at the time and go back for the 4th later,
spending $1400 to rent a trailer didn't make sense.

So instead of lining U-haul's pockets with my money,I went out and
bought a trailer. It was a brand new tandem axle, came with an aluminum
diamond plate toolbox andelectric brakes. Total cost was
$1600. The initial outlay of cash didn't feel too good, but it was
probably some of the best money I've spent. Since I bought the trailer two
years ago, I've used it at least a dozen times for a variety of things.

The $1400spent on renting a trailer would have been long gone, but
now Ihave my own trailer whenever I need it.

Food for thought.

in the summer of 1969 they went on strike. it was during the model change over. not sure about chevelle but Camaro had a new body style coming out and because the change over hadn't happened they kept making the 69. the 69 Camaro was made until DEC 1969. the new Camaro was then called a 70 1/2 and showed up in Feb of 70.
i have heard of many 70 models (GMs) having parts made 4 or 5 months before assembly. also has anyone ever seen a chevelle from 68 I believe with BOP interior? Seems there was a shortage at some chevelle plants and instead of stopping production they used bop interior packages.

Larry,
Seems it was both years according to some union history pages I came across on a google search(gm strike 1970).1970 saw the longest work stoppage ever at gm.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Holley parts

2003-02-02 Thread Kent Lewis

Vernon,

The parts are the same size, and
shape. These were originally on a Holley 600 vacuum secondary carb. with
the single fuel inlet and the side float bowls. (Do not recall which one
was installed in the front and which went in the back) At the time I
changed to the center pivot bowls with dual feed, removed these
"plates" that we've been talking about, and added a set of metering
blocks with jets. When you talk to the Holley tech rep, make sure you have
the part numbers off the carburator.

Vernon,

Just checked my box of Holley carb
parts. Was unable to find the part number you asked for.
But, did find part # 34R-2007 34R-9716. Call Holley Technical
Dept. and ask ifeither of these plates will work for your
application.

Vernon,

Do you need a metering block, or the
thin flat plate that screws into the body ? I may just
havethe thin flat plate in my box of Holley carb parts. You
are welcome to it if that is what you need.

  parts

I hope some one can help me out. I need a
secondary metering block plate for a 4160 holley. I tried holley and
they say they don't sell to the public so I tried Jegs and they have
the part number is in their computer but it says not avaible from
holley anymore. The part number is 34r1993. With out this part
the gas in the back bowl drains into the intake when I shut off the
car. I'm afraid if this keeps up very long it will wipe out my engine.
I bought this used and the plate wasn't in it. Couldn't figure out why
gas kept running in the intake. Looked at an exploded view and
  there it was.Any ideas?
Thanks,Vernon
