RE: [Chevelle-list] Car show tips

2003-09-24 Thread Herb Lumpp
Hi Bill,

If your car was just painted you should wait at least a few weeks before
putting wax on it. I don't know all the details for this, but it has
something to do with the chemicals in the paint needing to evaporate before
wax is applied.

Personally, I like Mother's and The Wax Shop products.

As for info about your car, that's totally up to you. If you've put a lot
of work into it and have before and during pictures, I've noticed a lot
of people seem to enjoy looking at them. After they look at the pictures,
they check the car out and then look at the pictures some more. When they
get done they usually walk away shaking their head with a smile on their
face.

To figure out your Load..

The Formulas is P

and E =

example your water pump is
220v at 6 amp = 1320 watts

your refrig. is 110 v at 9 amps = 990

your light lamp load is
simple there marked in watts
you now can figure out

  Donnie,
   It is a 5,000 watt generator. I have a 240 volt 50 amp
outlet in my garage for my air compressor. I turn off the main feed and all
breakers at the electric box so that there is no chance of power coming to the
house from the power company. Then you plug a male to male cord from the
240 outlet of the generator to the 240 outlet in the garage. Then you
start the generator, go to your electric box and start turning on the breakers
that you want to use. I don't turn all of the breakers on but the ones that I
want to use the most. I turn on the water pump, refrigerator, range,
bathrooms, Big TV Screen (LOL) , computer and lights throughout the house. At
some point the generator will start to strain. You will know it is when the
motor starts to bog down. If this happens you have to much on in the house and
adjust what is on accordingly. If you would like to know more feel free to
  email me.

Thanks Diane,

For some reason I didn't see this reply until searching the list archives.
So, I guess the '72 SS had only the upper lower moldings? I just did some
searching around and it seems that the center was blacked out (no center
moldings) on the SS.

For some odd reason, the OPG catalog says that the SS grill package comes
with three moldings. Two or four would make sense to me, but not three.

1. Car stalled on me (going to work, late, thinking, "I'll wait for gas" - When I got gas, it still wouldn't start)
2. Had someone check out my car who told me to leave key in on position -- the large wire from coil to firewall burned.
3. Had someone fix the burned wire and my car was up and running...
4. Same day it got fixed, I'm heading home and it cuts off on freeway.

Opinions on engine swaps are about as good as opinions on paint schemes,
everyone will be different. At any rate, here's my opinion.

First, don't go to mechanics that will turn your carb 180 degrees.
Nobody will blame you for replacing a 307. Engine swaps in general are
PITA's mostly because of the overlooked details. The main one is bracket
mounts for accessories. If your 307 has mounting holes in front of the
heads, and your replacement engine also doesyou are 90% there, as the
rest is just grunt work. If not, then you have to find, buy, fabricate
brackets to hold your alt, PS pump, AC, etc and is very difficult to get it
to look good without spending loads of cash.
Now for the replacement. I am not an expert on Olds 350's, but I am
fairly sure they are different than Chevy 350's. I'm sure you cannot swap
heads or intakes between the two, so that would make me think twice before
swapping it and finding out what else doesn't fit. You need to check with
someone who knows for sure.
I have seen on various web pages descriptions of 307s being bored to 377
with a stroker kit. I never looked further into it and don't know who has
this stroker kit but it sounds promising. That would make the 'swap' alot
easier. A night searching the internet should find something. Also
remember, swapping your engine will put stress on your stock tranny that
it's not used to.

Hope this helps
Hoss

Thank Hoss,
That info was very informative. I didn't think of the brackets, I thought that since maybe I was transferring whole engines ... meaning I'm not taking anything off that's unnecessary, that it might be easier. But your saying that even though I would transfer the engine, alt, carb, distributor, and everything else that came from the Olds engine to the Chevelle, it still may not fit in the engine compartment correct?
I kinda wanted the new 4barrel and everything else connected to the 350, though I bought a 4 barrel intake for my 307 about 1 1/2 yrs ago and never put it on.
Again thanks for the info. I'll try to find out more specs on the 350 maybe that could help too! Anymore suggestions?

 Thanx Hoss,
 Charles

PS.
I wrote down your concerns like mounting holes and I'll check on'em immediately. I'm sorry, it was the distributor that he turned not the carb. I'm not too good with auto mechanic and sometimes get confused but gimme a PC and I'll show you something :)

Re: [Chevelle-list] engine swap -- Hey, Me too

2003-09-24 Thread the . cat
I'm hardly an expert on engine swaps, but I might be able to help
with some things.

Chevy and BOP-C (Buick Olds Pontiac=Cadillac) blocks have different
transmission mounting holes. Some transmissions (TH200-4R, for
example) have a dual-pattern bellhousing, one that is drilled for
either bolt pattern, but some transmissions are for one or the other.
Call a trans shop in your area and ask them how to tell the
difference - I believe the Chevy trans-to-block bolt bosses are
closer together than those for a BOP-C trans.

Don't take this as gospel truth, but I do think that the 350 would
fit on your 70 with little or no modifications. IIRC, the same frame
was used for all A-body cars (excepting wagons and El Caminos) in any
model year. Thus your frame may have mounting holes already drilled
in it for an Olds motor mount.

Unless the Olds block is exceptionally tall or wide, it should
physically fit in your engine compartment. Your accessories
(alternator, power steering, A/C) may not be in the same locations as
on the Chevy block, so longer wires/hoses etc. may be needed to
connect them up to the Olds accessories locations.

Your carb may fit on both intakes - measuring the dimensions of the
bases and the distances between the mounting bolts should tell you.
If it does fit, though, it may not have a high enough CFM rating
(cubic feet per minute, a measure of flow through the carb) for the
larger demands of the 350. Does anyone have the formula for CFM
ratings to hand?

I hope this helps,
Dave.

Re: [Chevelle-list] engine swap

2003-09-24 Thread Dave Sands
I suspect I've fallen into every engine-swap trap in the history of
GM. In addition to the brackets and motor mounts issues mentioned
previously here's the ones I remember slapping my forehead over:
Check that throttle linkage is compatible, that the kick-down rod or
cable still fits, that the transmission coolant lines will clear the
new block, that the positive battery cable will reach the starter and
stay off your exhaust manifold and pipe (fire sucks), that the wiring
(warning lights, gauges, distributor etc) will reach and connect, that
the power steering pump will clear the frame (or will match to the
other block if you choose to leave your Chevelle's in place), that you
have radiator and heater hoses that fit, that your exhaust manifolds
will bolt up to the exhaust pipes and, if you keep your Olds
alternator, that it's the same type (internal or external regulator) as
the one on the Chevelle block. Maybe for a '70 that won't be an issue.
Also, if you change intake manifolds and/or valve covers, make sure one
or the other still has an oil filler hole - that was my all-time
favourite gaffe.
I've made all these errors, and more I can't remember. And, when you
slap your forehead and say Doh! make sure you haven't got a 9/16s
wrench in your hand (ouch!).
BTW, can the list help me with this one: I've just put a 283 with an
HEI distributor in my '66 Chevelle. But the wiring harness off the
firewall was for the old points-style distributor and coil. Do I hook
up to the BATT terminal on the HEI those two wires that formerly went
to the coil? Or just one, and which one?
Thanks for any assistance.
Del, with a dent in his forehead :-)

Re: [Chevelle-list] engine swap -- Hey, Me too

2003-09-24 Thread Zieg72

I have actually done the swap. It is not bad but
you will have to get frame mounts from a 68-72 that had a Olds engine. The
battery really needs to be switched to the left fender but the starter wires are
long enough. The trans bolt patterns are different and the trans kickdown
cable is hooked to the gas pedal if it has a TH350. The exhaust is
different because of the cat. on the '76 but the manifolds are the same so an
exhaust shop can bend the pipe as if it is a 70 Cutlass. I believe the
hole in the firewall for the throttle cable is bigger on the 76 so you might
need to file a bit. I can't remember how I dealt with the kickdown
cable. I believe I copied the holes in the firewall and made it and I also
used the gas pedal off of a 72 Cutlass. E-mail if you have any specific
questions, its been a while but I have a pretty good long term memory
still.

Is it possible thatone of these little
buggers have slipped thru u'r
firewalland Antivirus but it can't get
out, due to later upgrades of firewall?

Run a full
system scan if you haven't already done that!

Patience Gentlemen, a lady doesn't come to the dance half dressed. Let me
get some paint on it please. It's been quite an ordeal learning how to go about
painting it myself and I'm still not totally prepared equipment wise. I need to
get the surface rust dealt with. the guy at ppg auto store sold me some epoxy
primer the other day. I found some rust trouble at the drivers rear wheel well
and think I should cut out the metal or use Por 15, I don't want to buy the
whole 1/4 panel and weld it in, any suggestions? it's all just inside the
opening, not on the outer panel yet, about a foot max...I'd hate to bondo it.

i personally think by the time you mess with all the little things you could buy a rebuilt 350 to put in it
