RE: [Chevelle-list] Wow - Engine runs but leaks from head gasket :^(

2004-01-10 Thread Herb Lumpp
Hi Graham,

Since you're going to pull the heads off anyway (right?), before reassembly
I recommend getting a set of ARP head bolts (if you don't already have them)
and a tube of their thread sealer (part #100-9904) for the head bolts that
protrude into the water jacket and the intake manifold bolts. The nice
thing about the thread sealer is that in addition to sealing the threads it
is an excellent lubricant to ensure more accurate torque readings. I've
used ARP's thread sealer and their assembly lube (part #100-9903) on the
last five engines I've built and haven't had a problem with any of them.

I would take the top end off measure the heads and the top of the block with

I know you'll have to throw away some new head and intake gaskets but whats

Torque all bolts In the right sequence to half spec'd and take a coffee

Depending on the gasket, they may or may not require retorquing after a time
but in either case, there shouldn't be any leaking. Could be the head bolts
weren't torque properly originally or possibly sitting with only air temp
warming and cooling, they may have loosened up.

Just one thing, I don't know if I explained well, did you take the
measurement at the edge between where the front molding ends and where
the rear molding begins or did you start at the rear molding edge going
straight forward ??
I measured from the actual fender opening, the edges of the sheet metal,
using the moldings as reference points. This meant that the tape measure
was sloping down from front to back. I'll try to draw something here:

[Chevelle-list] sludge in motor

2004-01-10 Thread Kyle Bennett

I just picked up a GMC truck so now i can haul around parts and tow vehicles, which leads me to an off base question.

This 350 engine has 151k on the odometer and the motor appears to have a substantial build up of sludge in it.

What is the best way to remove as much sludge as possible without doing a complete rebuild? I've heard of using a product called Sea Foam. Or to do a kerosene flush.

What have you all done before...or heard WORKS.

Thanks,
Kyle

I'm not sure if a Chevelle has any caster gain or not, that's what would

change the wheelbase measurement. Set everything at ride height &
measure

2004-01-10 Thread Tigergutt
Graham,

You should have used silicone on the ones protruding into the water
channels.

I'm not en expert on torque settings by any means so I cant answer that
Q but I know that the water will creep along the threads.

I also use the supplied grease (ARP bolts or studs) under the washers
and nuts or under the heads of the bolts because that will mess up the
torque settings if you don’t. on old bolts I use the nearest box of
grease around (I don’t think that’s 100% correct to do)

Ciao :o)

Did you have silicone on the head bolts/studs that protrude into the
water channels ? not that this would cause the water to run out but
normally, but who knows ??

Depending on the gasket, they may or may not require retorquing after a
time but in either case, there shouldn't be any leaking. Could be the
head bolts weren't torque properly originally or possibly sitting with
only air temp warming and cooling, they may have loosened up.

2004-01-10 Thread Tigergutt
Hi again,

I would also like you to measure the wheelbase, as I've understood it
its supposed to be 112"

But does this measurement vary with the suspension going up and down ??

Subject: RE: [Chevelle-list] Need two measurement of off a 1968 Chevelle

Would someone with a 1968 Chevelle coupe be so kind to take a
measurement for me ?

What I need is to know if the front wheel is centered in the front
wheelwell.

Lets say, by measuring the wheelwell between where the front molding
ends and where the rear molding begins (just to have two reference
points), I mean from the edge of the wheelwell, not the molding itself.

I would like to have this measurement (should be around 30/32", but I
don’t have my numbers here).

I would also like to know if the center of the wheel is at center of
this measurement or if its moved front or aft by any degree.

I get my wheelcenter to be moved back about 3/4" and that doesn’t seem
right, I'm still in time to change before finish welding so please help
me if you are able to do that.

Thanks for your help.

Graham,

That doesn’t sound normal to me, are you sure you torqued the heads
before starting it (I know it sounds stupid but It can happen to
everyone)

What it also could be is that either the block or heads aren’t straight.

I would take of the head and check it out.

Ciao !

Hi Folks,

Well, this day finally happened - the motor fired right and up and ran!
Unbelievable; it was truly amazing to see it in action, after it being
on
the engine stand for 2+ years now.
I really wanted to hear the gear-drive, but with open headers, it's a
tad
hard ;-)
However after about 6 minutes or so breaking in the cam, 2 leaks started
and
I cut off the motor.

A leak developed in the fuel pump, where the bottom half (swivel) gasket
started to leak. Kind of typical I guess of a cheap two-piece unit.

Another leak started with the head gasket; at the front end, in-between
the
head & block - little coolant started to leak out, which brings to the
point
of this email. Is this normal - after the engine has warmed up for the
first time and all? I guess since things start to expand and what-not.
Does the head gaskets need to be re-torqued?

Oh, by the way, John Nasta mentioned a while back about a tool from K-D
Tools, a "portable ignition system". If you can locate one, I would
highly
recommend it. It's completely rad! The engine can start and run
without
the car's ignition system hooked up. I got one from eBay for about
$25.00.

Anyhoo, thanks for any help!

And it has lots of active forums/bulletin boards.

Anybody know which site it might be? I'm in the market for a work truck

particular site would be very helpful.

Thanks, in advance.

Re: [Chevelle-list] NMW ladder bars

2004-01-10 Thread yenkochevelle

I have a set of the NMW latter bars that came off a parts car. The car had a
piece of angle iron welded across the frame and attached to the front of the
latter bar. It was a home made set up. The NMW bars were also sold by
Lakewood and came with a large bracket that bolted to the frame and to the
front control arm. They have a cool "day 2" look but are not the best set-up
for drag racing. The NMW bars came red primer color and the Lakewood bars
came painted yellow. Motion Performance used them also on the Phase III 427
Chevelles.
