Re: [Chevelle-list] tail out of the trunk meaning

2004-02-18 Thread Gunner

Looking around the web I found a site which says the tag line "Put a tiger in your tank" was created by a Chicago copywriter named Emery Smith who worked for McCann-Erickson in 1964.

Another chronicles the "Esso Tiger Trophy" given by the British Aerobatic Association, Ltd. which started in 1959 with a footnote that the award was sponsored by Esso Petroleum until 1980.  Looks like our cousins across the Atlantic had "The Tiger" before we did.  Hmmm... just found a page on the exxonmobilco.uk site that says "Esso first used the tiger in its advertising in the early days of branded petrol which followed the end of rationing after the Second World War.

I also found a pretty sad story about Tessa who was the tiger "model" for many years and the pitiful state of her "retirement" in Aruba.  People...

As the first GTO began to hit the market, Jim Wangers, Pontiac marketing

with a tiger climbing under the hood of the new GTO.  They used the Tiger

the mid sixties. This was also Jim's idea. They would come to local drag

Did Pontiac ever give out tiger tails? I know the only ones I got were
from the Esso station. My Dad was a travelling salesman, and drove
Pontiacs from 1958 until he was no longer able to drive. I went with him
to the dealer when he bought his cars, and I feel sure that the salesman
would have given me a tail if they were available. Dad put 85 to 100k
miles a year on his Ponchos, and he traded every year. I can clearly
remember the '63, '64, & '65 Catalinas that he had, & I don't remember any
tiger tails. I did my best to talk him into a GTO, but it was "too d&$n
small for what I need!" (I remember that clearly too ) In 69 he got a
Bonneville with the 428, 4bb, dual exhausts, positrac, & sport suspension
package. I was 17 years old, a total bonehead, & he let me take it out one
day. I locked up the brakes when a old man started to pull out in front of
me, spun it around, and hit a curb with the left rear wheel. After that
the car drove real weird; had a '"whoompity, whoompity" noise in the
back. I took the car home, told the old man what I did, got my butt
whipped even though I was 17 and had owned up to my stupidity. I think is
cost about $400 to put a new rear end under the car. I bent the axle &
probably the control arms & who knows what else. Dad got rid of the Bonnie
soon after that, mainly because of the bad gas mileage. If I ever find a
GTO that's as nice as my SS, I'll probably try to trade for it. I still
have a soft spot for Pontiacs.

Wayne,
Well I hope you had fun here in sunny Arizonait was 82 degrees
todayI even drove my Chevelle to work it was so nice. It's a
shame you won't be here in the Phoenix area for the last weekend of
February. Our club is helping Brown and Brown Chevrolet, the biggest
Chevy dealer in Mesa, with a Valentines car show on Sunday February
29th.
B&B is really getting jazzed up about the event. They are going to have
at least 2 radio stations at the event, food venders, and are raffling
off a ton of really nice prizes including a nicely re-furbished 1998 S10
truck. (I couldn't talk them into giving away one of those SSR's or a
supercharged Monte SS though.maybe next year)
If anybody is in the area that weekend, stop on by and bring your car.
The event is open for all Chevys up to 1972. You can get more details
at cruisinarizona.com if you are interested.

Sorry about the rant. I'm just excited about the show. Come back to AZ
again with some $$$ and a trailer and find the treasures. They are
definitely out there. About two Sundays ago I saw two little old ladies
driving down Main Street in a super clean 61 Impala bubbletop. It was
white with red interior. All the chrome was there and the body lines
were as straight as the day it rolled off the showroom floor. The paint
could have used some wax, but jeez, lets not be picky!

Over the weekend, I took my '66 out for a spin, and
noticed at idle a very VERY mild tap on the driver's

still getting broken in, so I'm assuming it was simply
a loose rocker.

I pulled the valve cover tonite and noticed the
exhaust valve on #3 seemed a little sloppy, so I
cranked her down- But here's my main question.. I
noticed that some of the other rockers seemed tight,

Well, I guess that this will show my age..I can't remember the exact year,
but Esso (now Exxon) had an ad campaign with the slogan "Put a Tiger in
your tank!" Part of the campaign was when you bought gas at the Esso
station, they would give you a tiger tail to attach to your fuel
filler. Of course, many of them were hung on the mirror or out of the
doors or the trunk. The tiger is still around as Exxon's mascot, but he
hasn't reached the popularity that he had in the 60's. There were a lot of
ad campaigns like this in the old days, but I can't remember any more of
them right now. Maybe a brain cell or two will kick in later & I'll tell
you about them. One thing I do remember is that Amoco was the only
unleaded gas that could be bought then. We called it "white gas", because
it didn't have any color to it, and it smelled different than the leaded
gasolines. We used it for fuel in Coleman lanterns & stoves in place of
the more expensive Coleman fuel. It was usually priced 2~3 cents higher
than other fuels too, around 36 to 40 cents per gallon. :-))

Polished Centerlines - call for blackwalls, factory steel rims with dog dish

Of course everyone has differnt ideas about which tire looks the best. I
had Chrome 16" X 7" Ralley wheels on my '65 and loved them. It gave it a
classic look with a modern flare.

Actually, Aluminum polishing is easy if you have an air compressor. Here's
what I use:

$8.99Die grinder

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=44716
$7.993pc felt polishing bob

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=43963
$9.99Polishing Cakes (4 pack)

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42660
$1.994" Spiral Cotton Buffing Wheel

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=39404
$1.994" Loose Flannel Buffing Wheel

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=39414
$1.994" Loose Cotton Buffing Wheel

So, for $32.94 You will have a hand held polishing setup.
You will need a spindle to mount the buffing wheels on. I couldn't find it
in the search.
Also, you will need sandpaper. From 300 grit to 2000 grit.
I've re-polished aluminum wheels with this.

I sand imperfections out of the aluminum using the 300 grit, then sand
working my way up to 2000 grit.
Then starting with the 'coarse' polishing cake, and the Sprial cotton
buffing wheel. I work my way through the 3 main grits with the red, or
'jewelers rouge' being last on the loose cotton buffing wheel. The
polishing bobs are for the tight corners.

Oh, buy some beer, and get a radio with some headphones (to hear over the
airtool), you're going to be a while.

Later

run 15x8 ralleys all the

I like RWL tires on Chevy rally wheels. I have 15 x 8's
on the back, 15 x 7's on the front, with BFG white letter tires. I watch the
curbs, so they are not scuffed up. I think this IS the correct look for a 60's
musclecar, so don't mind the dating issue at all. In another application, like a
new car, I probably would not use RWL tires.

I have been around cars and car shows my entire life, however, I don't have
a clue about the tail sticking out of the trunk. Where did it start? What
meaning, if any, does it have? Any trivial information would be good to
know, so this year when at our cruise nights and my 6 yr twins ask "what's
the sticking out for?" I'll have better answers for them rather than just
laughing with them about the cat or raccoon that is stuck in the trunk.

To my knowledge it's just a fad, kinda like the "Baby on board" signs that
everyone used to have plastered on their windows, or the fake bullet hole
stickers on cars. Admittedly, I have laughed at the 'ol Garfield smashed in
the trunk lid, but after seeing about 200 of them, it gets old. The latest
thing I have seen is a baseball that is cut in half, and applied to a
window, with a sticker, to make it look as though it has smashed through the
glass.

Pontiac GTO's campaign was with a tiger. The GTO TIGER. Put a tiger in
your tank. Etc.

Might it be a throw-back to the Pontiacs of the mid-60's? Didn't they have a
tiger as part of their ad campaigns? Seems to me I remember GTO ads with a
tiger tail hanging out of the trunk...

My recollection is that it all got started with an Exxon gas commercial many years
ago, where they promoted a tiger in your tank. They sold or gave away tiger tails
that could be hung out the gas tank lid. At least that is my memory of when these
things got started.

Blackwall. RWL tires date a car too much.

Thanks for the response.  I do like the looks of the RWL on
Bill’s, Tom’s, John’s and James’s cars.  I think I’m
definitely leaning to the RWL idea.  Thanks Guys.

Depends on the car for me. If the car "looks" like a
race car, blackwall definitely. If it looks like mean
street muscle, usually RWL.

Here's my 66. driver_side.jpg shows the tires

Craig, this really is a personal preference situation.
What do you like? Raised letters were very popular in
those days. Most generally, I prefer black walls but
the curbs in Texas are massive and raised letters are
easily torn up. Try em both ways, they will balance
either way.

Fred, you may want to go to a custom spring
manufacturer like Eaton or Detroit spring. I had also
heard of a coil spring manufacturere in Georgia that
works with Dirt Racers and can offer Engineering
assistance also.
my 2 cents worth.
