Re: [Chevelle-list] Hotchkis springs now TKO 5spd
If I would have had the option of either a TKO-500 or TKO-600 when I bought my Viper T56,I would have went with one of the new TKO's. Less money and I could have kept my 3.50 gears, instead of the 4.11's I'm running now. In fact, I just did the final updates on the trans install. It was quite an ordeal, but I probably made it harder than it needed to be with the new console, and all the other stuff I was/am doing at the same time. So far I've only made one test drive and it seems to shift ok, a bit stiff/notchy, but it is brand new so I'm hoping it smooths out once I get some miles on it. Re: [Chevelle-list] Crazy weather today
David, the car looks great. Too bad it has to be in Ohio. Just kidding. Texas weather is tough on cars also. Seems to me that the cars get hot in the sun but the water is the hardest on them, huh? Re: [Chevelle-list] 65 Rear Tire size
From: Larry Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-list] 65 Rear Tire size I know this has been discussed, but I just can't remember. My 65 SS has 225 14 70S BFGs on the rear. I need a tire that is wider and STICKS. Ever since I finished the mods to the BB it has way too much power for the rears. What a problem too have! I do not want to go taller. I am using classic Cragers, and plan to go to Stockton Wheel in Calif for a wider offset rim. So what's out there - what do you guys use? Larry Williams My 64 wagon has a 265/50-15 T/A radial. Mounted on a 15x8 steel wheel w/ 5 backspace by Wheel Vintiques. I was worried I wouldn't clear a 275. It might have with minor work. The 64 beater had a 245/50-16 on a 16x8w/4 3/4 BS American Racing copy of an 80's TransAm rim. It was tight in the rear 1/3 of fenderlip probably due to sloppy qtr panel replacement, but maybe I was feeling that lack of a 1/4 of BS. Some minor violence with a hammer made it clear. I'll have to try those wheels on the unaltered 4 dr and see how it looks. Most forums it usually comes down to 5 backspace for 64 and 65 Chevelles. Some wheels don't come that way, some do by special order. Check out some cruise nights or shows and see what other cars have on and ask what they did to get them on. I rarely pass a 64 or 65 without checking the tire size! Personally I'm not into jacking up the car or torching a semi circle in the qtr panel to get the wheels on. I see the old Minilite style wheels are making a comeback but haven't looked into it too hard. They looked good on old Trans Am Camaros, I think they'd work on a early Chevelle too. [Chevelle-list] Transmission support bar location?
I have a 69 SS with a TH-400 and the transmission is out of the car, but I want to put the transmission support bar back on the frame. I have sandblasted and painted the frame and forget which set of holes to use to attach the trans support bar to on the frame. Can anyone tell me which holes to use? Thanks. john 69 SS
[Chevelle-list] Must dos with engine out of car
I've pulled the engine ('66 SS with a non-stock 454) for a number of minor reasons -- the engine is not being torn down but needed to be out of the way. It has been separated from the transmission (non-stock 4-speed of as-yet unkown heritage) which is still in the car. Have been hunting web sites and rebuild books looking for answers to no avail (well, a little) -- the question is this: what basic maintenance/replacement should be done once the engine and trans are separated? I'm assuming at least a couple of seals, new clutch related, mounts for engine and trans (already done)...and other stuff. I don't want to put the engine back in only to find a cheap part (relatively speaking) and a little time now would have saved multiple headaches and many $$$ later. I'd spring for a single-piece oil pan gasket (Felpro I believe) while you're doing the rear-main seal. Re: [Chevelle-list] 65 Rear Tire size
From: Larry Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] 65 Rear Tire size It was pointed out that getting those big tires on and off can be a challenge. Should have mentioned that. Jacking under pumpkin on rear axle doesn't work, maybe not even for the stock wheels and tires. Bumper jack will probably not work either.(on wide tires) Pretty much have to raise car so axle drops all the way to end of shock travel. If I was really driving anywhere I think I'd downsize tire a bit so I could get it on and off along side of road. Carry fix-a-flat, or join AAA, unless you have a buddy with a rollback.
