Hydraulic rollers are the way to go,IMO,if you can afford the extra cost.
They ain't cheap,though.

Well,,let's count up some numbers. All the headwork w/valve job will
probably run around $500. The induction system will probably run another $500 or
more. A good flat tappet cam kit and HEI will cost another $400-500. Add another
$500-750 for a complete exhaust system. Add another $500 or more for extras like
gasket set,oil pump, water pump, and bearings. If you're not going to do the
engine disassembly and re-assembly,add another $500 or more.
You could probably pick up a nice 468 BBC for around $4000 so this is
something to consider. A good 468 will easily produce 500hp/500tq.

Lots of traffic re: part suppliers lately. My personal experience only:
Summit: A-. had been A+ but in the last couple of months have been getting fussy about making good on incorrectly defined parts. Customer service had been A+ but now they're beginning to hold me responsible for their identifying and shipping wrong parts. Not good; I've begun using local parts suppliers instead.
True Connections: A++. Dick & crew have been total stars. Parts, advice, attitude, and price. No issues.
OPG: Have been "dinged" on the list somewhat, but they've been really good with me. Parts have been what they've needed to be; in the odd occasion I got what appeared to be a sloppy repro they replaced it with no questions--and paid for shipping.
Jegs: limited work with them, but they've been kinda stuffy IMO about making good on either miscommunication or incorrectly recommended/shipped parts.
My "go to" guys are True Connections & Summit, for what it's worth.
Best wishes and happy holidays to all.

You probably don't need alum heads to see the 400hp mark,Tom. A good valve
job and maybe a little pocket porting/bowl work will have your oval port
heads ready to go. Add an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake,750-800cfm
Holley, hydraulic cam kit of around 235 degrees duration @ .050 with around
.520-570 lift,good electronic ignition,and a free-flowing exhaust consisting of
1 7/8" headers and 2.5" mandrel bent tubing & a pair of quality mufflers
should easily get you in the 400hp/450lb range.

OPG claims
to make their own glove box nameplates for 1964 & '65. I have had them here
and never noticed any problems with quality. I'm not sure if they also make
their '66 & '67 and/or if they are the same ones that Goodmark sells.

They do
stamp the letters OPGI into the plastic stuff they make (on the back of course).

I have the same situation in restoring my 396
So far I have around $600. invested into the machine shop, cleaning, manufluxing engine and block, reboring all the cylinders to .30over, checking crank. Thats the easy part, I am going to purchase the rebuild kit for the engine, and that is going to be around $500.(Hopefully). The purchase of the engine with delivery was $900.
I think to restore the engine (doing it yourself) Will realistically cost you around 1000.
to 1500. It always depends on how you are going to rebuild it.

It seems the majority of the Chevelle/El Camino nation is primarily
interested in restoration or keeping their cars looking like they did in the
'60's and 70's, Mike. Until that changes, parts like Covan dashes for
A-bodies will be slow in coming.
Almost makes you want to build a First Gen Camaro instead, doesn't it?

Tom, if I ever do another motor one way or another, it
will always have a bit a porting and smoothing around
the intak and exhaust ports. Other than good parts
selection and proper degreeing of the cam, thats a
great start.
Good luck, keep us posted.

There is a couple of things that come to my mind about
buying plastic chrome items, name badges and bexels. I
like to buy the stuff after seeing it first like at a
swap meet or if there is a local parts distributor.

But I wanted to shift this to the dash itself. I am
not necessaril happy that the parts producers only
have, for example the radio bezel with two holes for
the radio knobs. Why has there not been some aluminum
pieces like dash strips? If it were not for Covans

Sorry for my rant.

Tom,

I don't live in Phoenix anymore, but when I
did I looked into BRE and boy are they pricey!  If you decide to
do your own work, check out King Balancing in Glendale.  My understanding
is they're the place all the machine shops send the balance jobs to.  I
went directly to them and skipped the middle man.  They'll even assemble
your engine if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

[Chevelle-list] What to do with my 396??

2005-12-20 Thread NtOwlPro

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays.

Well, I thought I was almost done with my car..was spurred on with the
recent paint your engine posts so I thought I'd like to pull the engine and
check a few things while I had it out to paint and found a can of worms..looks
like I'm going to have to rebuild the motor..My question is while I'm in the
process what should I do??  It's a 68 396/350 horse that I would like to do
a few upgrades to maybe heads, cam.. I figure while it's out and I gotta do it
anyway, at least that's what I'm telling my wife..i'd like to make it a little
stronger without getting too crazy..I know it's a pretty broad question but I

Re: [Chevelle-list] Aftermarket bezel quality

2005-12-20 Thread Larry Shouse

That's good to know. I will be buying those same
pieces real soon for my 66 SS. Show quality or not, I would think it should
be blem free and straight. When you go buy a radio or TV, etc, you don't
typically see blems. Why should we accept anything less for our cars? There's
lots of room between concourse quality and blem free in my opinion.

Please let us know how things turn out for
you.

I know aftermarket is not original, but am I expecting to much?  The
'66 glove box bezel and radio bezel I just received from my favorite parts
supplier is put out by Goodmark.  The 4 inch "Supper Sport" emblem on the
glove box bezel is crooked by a good 1/8" and especially noticeable as it
sits a 1/4" above a horizontal silver line in the bezel.  The radio
bezel had several blemishes in the face.  The supplier said it's
aftermarket - not show quality, they'll look at it send new ones and pay for
shipping if they feel it is bad based on what else is on their shelf.
Shouldn't the emblem be at least straight?

  Thanks for the input,

I heard from the beginning of joining team chevelle that most everybody
doesn't look to favorably on OPG parts.  I bought a front bumper, all of
the front grill, tail light housings, black trunk bezel, etc. from them and the
parts where perfect with no problems installing.  Just my limited
experience in aftermarket parts.

Exactly Dan and I don't want to find out the hard way. The pucker factor,
on a scale from 1 to 10, was a 7 before I upgraded the brakes. I'd hate
for it to still be in that range because of a lack of boost. Forgot to
grab my cam card at home last night, so maybe I can run my cam specs by
you guys tomorrow.

Be careful when you first install it. It takes a little while to break in.
It's touchy at first!!

When is a cam big enough to benefit from hydroboost? Or I guess another
way to ask this is when is manifold vacuum too low to operate a power
brake

booster? Just curious.
