Re: [Chevelle-list] How Harsh is Too Harsh?
Thanks for the response, Wayne. Yeah, see I'm the kind of guy who loved the harsh ride of my Corvette and my Springer Softail (this was before the Twin Cam). I just prefer it. To me, it is all part of the experience. But now I'm wondering about what another reply stated, where he mentioned that the rear suspension is more apt to bind. I definitely don't want that. As a combo street/strip car, I want to make sure I eliminate wheel hop, too. argh Karl Groves Master Certified CIW http://www.karlgroves.com Will Work For Parts: http://chevelle.karlcore.com/detail.php?id=3 The Binding I think your referring to. Clint made mention of.. Global West an after market suspension Co. That caters to the Pro Touring.. claims that.. Clint i am sure can elaborate .. All my experience show me have that be Straight line Launches or Zooming around my Mountain curvy roads... My Chevelles and El Caminos ALL had Polly Energy Suspension every wear , Quick ratio boxes aftermarket Springs and Shocks and HD sway bars.. and I love the Feel and the Ride. Not as harsh as the 58/62 vette and surly not like a Hard Tail springer Hog. GL Wayne _ Dont just search. Find. Re: [Chevelle-list] Need speedometer needle for 68
Steve, After a few Google searches and calls I found D M Restorations 800-722-0854. Before buying a part from them they suggested I completely disassemble the gauge cluster as often the needle pops off and does not completely fall out, but gets stuck sight unseen in the bottom of the cluster. If yourcluster is not completely disassembled - your need may be in there. Low and behold atthe bottom of the my cluster, in perfect condition was the needle. They said they will pop off if the speedo unit gets gunked up or debris is present. They also told me the correct way to reinstall it. Krister Meister '66 SS #'s -- Original message -- From: Steve Strickland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, Does anyone know where I can get a replacement needle for a 68 Malibu speedometer, assuming that it is possible to just replace the needle? Date: Tue, 24 Jan 2006 09:30:59 -0600 The Big Wheel In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two. Their Dad had never been much more than a presence they feared. Whenever they heard his tires crunch on the gravel driveway they would scramble to hide under their beds. He did manage to leave $15 a week to buy groceries. Now that he had decided to leave, there would be no more beatings, but no food either. If there was a welfare system in effect in southern Indiana at that time, I certainly knew nothing about it. I scrubbed the kids until they looked brand new and then put on my best homemade dress, loaded them into the rusty old 51 Chevy and drove off to find a job. The seven of us went to every factory, store and restaurant in our small town. No luck. The kids stayed crammed in the car and tried to be quiet while I tried to convince whomever would listen that I was willing to learn or do anything. I had to have a job. Still no luck. The last place we went to, just a few miles out of town, was an old Root Beer Barrel drive- in that had been converted to a truck stop. It was called The Big Wheel. An old lady named Granny owned the place and she peeked out of the window from time to time at all those kids. She needed someone on the graveyard shift, 11 at night until seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour, and I could start that night. I raced home and called the teenager down the street that baby-sat for people. I bargained with her to come and sleep on my sofa for a dollar a night. She could arrive with her pajamas on and the kids would already be asleep. This seemed like a good arrangement to her, so we made a deal. That night when the little ones and I knelt to say our prayers, we all thanked God for finding Mommy a job. And so I started at the Big Wheel. When I got home in the mornings I woke the baby-sitter up and sent her home with one dollar of my tip money- fully half of what I averaged every night. As the weeks went by, heating bills added a strain to my meager wage. The tires on the old Chevy had the consistency of penny balloons and began to leak. I had to fill them with air on the way to work and again every morning before I could go home. One bleak fall morning, I dragged myself to the car to go home and found four tires in the back seat. New tires! There was no note, no nothing, just those beautiful brand new tires. Had angels taken up residence in Indiana? I wondered. I made a deal with the local service station. In exchange for his mounting the new tires, I would clean up his office. I remember it took me a lot longer to scrub his floor than it did for him to do the tires. I was now working six nights instead of five and it still wasn't enough. Christmas was coming and I knew there would be no money for toys for the kids. I found a can of red paint and started repairing and painting some old toys. Then hid them in the basement so there would be something for Santa to deliver on Christmas morning. Clothes were a worry too. I was sewing patches on top of patches on the boys pants and soon they would be too far gone to repair. On Christmas Eve the usual customers were drinking coffee in the Big Wheel. These were the truckers, Les, Frank, and Jim, and a state trooper named Joe. A few musicians were hanging around after a gig at the Legion and were dropping nickels in the pinball machine. The regulars all just sat around and talked through the wee hours of the morning and then left to get home before the sun came up. When it was time for me to go home at seven o'clock on Christmas morning, to my amazement, my old battered Chevy was filled full to the top with boxes of all shapes and sizes. I quickly opened the driver's side door, crawled inside and kneeled in the front facing the back seat. Reaching back, I pulled off the lid of the top box. Inside was a whole case of little blue jeans, sizes 2- 10! I looked inside another box: It was full of shirts to go with the jeans.

Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant
I have a similar story. A friend of mine that lived down the street from my parents' house had a 69 Malibu. It was a beater. Primer grey with a black vinyl top, 350 auto and a 2 barrel carb. I had lots of fun riding in it in high school and always loved the look of the 69. Anyway, a year or so after high school he decided to rebuild the motor. Basically, he started taking the motor apart, but never finished for some reason. I can't remember why now, but he was fed up and frustrated with the project. Since he knew how much I loved the car, he offered to sell it to me. I said, how much? He said, $200 and it's yours. I gave him the $200 and we pushed it home 3 or 4 blocks over to my parents house. A week or two later I pulled the motor and trans. Sold the trans to a buddy for $150 and the motor (in pieces) to someone else for $100. So I actually made $50 on the deal! That was about 12 years ago now, but I still have the car today. Re: [Chevelle-list] How Harsh is Too Harsh?
Poly bushings don't make a car ride much harder,if any. What they do is bind up the articulation of the rear suspension enough to make one think the ride is harder. Bind isn't good. New rubber bushings work just fine. Clint Hooper HH Custom, owner 1969 El Camino ProTourer 2001 H-D FLHR custom bagger http://dalesplace.com/misc/friends/clint/clint_hooper.htm
Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant
My first car ever was a 70 Camaro. The previous owner had decided to jack it up in the back with air shocks so he could fit off-brand drag radials (think knockoff MT Sportsmans) under it. To aid in quarter panel clearance, he cut the wheel wells really huge and did a TERRIBLE job of bondo-ing new wheel wells. It looked like a 3 year old did it with PlayDoh. When I took it to the body shop, one of the guys came over with a hammer, hit the wheel well and the whole quarter crumbled into a gray pile. Classic Industries got rich off me that week! ;-) Karl Groves Master Certified CIW http://www.karlgroves.com Will Work For Parts: http://chevelle.karlcore.com/detail.php?id=3 -Original Message- From: John Nasta [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2006 8:37 PM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant I just remembered why I was so shocked that the rubber fuel line between my sending unit and the steel line was patched with electrical tape. I think it's safe to say that mine was pretty much put through the wringer.

Re: [Chevelle-list] How Harsh is Too Harsh?
I have not followed the Chevelle Forum threads, but from what I have been told there is a difference between the upper and lower rear control arms. The upper ones are the ones that could be sloppy and rubber bushings were just fine (unless you wanted to drag race), but the lower control arms were just fine with urethane (or Delrin). When I set up my car I asked Doug from Global West if I should get his Rear Upper Control Arms while I was buying the Del-A-Lum lowers. He told me not to bother unless I planning on drag racing. It really makes a mark when a vendor tells you not to buy his stuff. Just about everything else is GW Del-A-Lum bushed. I have the front upper arms and rear lower arms, plus front springs and urethane bushed front sway bar from GW. The junkyard donated the F-Body front spindle, and I still have original rear springs and upper control arms. The buhsings in the rear upper arms are just about missing, so I need to replace them (or the arms if labor is close the price of new) soon. Re: [Chevelle-list] Fiber Optic Scope
I have the pro vision fiber optic scope and I love it. It's very handy. It depends on what you're going to use it for as far as what size to go with. I have the 1/2 inch (there was no 1/4 inch model available when I purchased mine). I would have bought the 1/4 inch if it were available when I bought mine. You may also want to consider length, I have the 18" long model but at times I wish it were the 36" version. If I remember correctly, there was a substantial price difference (and they're already spendy enough). Hope this helps. Scott Jackson 1969 Chevelle SS 396

I may race the car at the local quarter mile, but I will be cruising mostly with it! Global West says go with the ball bearing style bearings. They are used for drag racing, butPyle Brothers, that will do the conversion, says the ball bearings will leak after 10,000 or less miles. Pyle Brothers says you need to go with the roller style bearings for cruising and they will not leak like the ball bearings... Whom do you believe!! Dan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Roller or ball bearings in a 12 bolt conversion
I dunno all the specificas about bearing requirements in rear ends, but, in general, roller bearing handle more of a load and last longer than ball bearings. If you decide to go with ball bearing, get sealed units so they wont leak. Re: [Chevelle-list] Z-16 Prototype Auction
That's why I wondered if it was shill bidding because it seems like if someone was serious with over $900,000 bidon eBaythey would have gone to russo to buy...it also doesn't make sense that they sold it without a reserve at the auction. Who wants to bet what it will bring at BJ? Re: [Chevelle-list] How Harsh is Too Harsh?
Other than the anti-sway bar, I don't think there are any bushings to worry about. Ball joints, Pitman arms, tie rods, etc. have grease fittings, but you get what you get from the manufacturer, and it is metal to metal as far as I know. You can't buy a poly bushing kit for these fittings, just A-Arms and sway bars (bar mount and end links) in front. Since you have the full tilt GW kit, get what else you need from them and you can be sure that it will all work together, even if it costs a few dollars more than PST or someone else - not that PST is cheap. Sure, visit http://www.chevelles.com/aces/ and http://www.chevelles.com/aces/shows/index.html for show information. Some of the info on the shows page needs to be updated to 2006 but the dates at the top of the page are correct. You MUST be a member of ACES to show your car at Chevell~abration but anyone can attend for a small fee. Show is held at Moss-Wright Park in Goodlettsville, TN just north of Nashville June 8-10. I have a Flowmaster system with 50s on my 69 El Camino w/ SBC. I am happy with it. It is pretty cheap for a fairly complete system, and it was easy to install. If you are just basically joy-riding with your car, I think you would be happy in the absence of all sorts of science. Honestly, for your own sake, you will find that people on this list will be very friendly and very helpful as long as you respect the fact that this is not a place to post political or religious views, and not a place to forward junk emails. We enjoy discussing our Chevelles and El Caminos and I hope you will join in that discussion.
[Chevelle-list] Crossmember
I was reading through my restoration book tonight in the process of reinstalling my crossmember. The diagram in my book shows that for the two door coupe, the crossmember bolts to the front two holes in the frame not the back two that are used for elkys. It also looks like you install the bolts in "upside down" with lock washer, regular washer and then nut. I am just wanting to make sure that I am looking at the pics right. If someone can either confirm or correct me on this that would be great! Thanks Ryan A.C.E.S. #07184
Re: [Chevelle-list] Crossmember
The location of the crossmember depends on what transmission you have. TH400's are longer, therefore the crossmember has to be further back. Also bear in mind that EC frames are different than 2 door coupes. The EC frame is boxed and is 4 inches longer in the middle than a 2 door. The bolts to go in, what you call upside down. Tom
