[Chevelle-list] brake master cylinder

2008-05-30 Thread Peebles, Lorne (Services)
I want to replace my master cylinder on my 66 Chevelle. All reference
material to the car and year points me to a single reservoir unit. I
currently have a dual unit installed but it is very tired and looks
crappy. My question is will any dual master cylinder work or is there a
specific model I should be looking for. Thanks

Re: [Chevelle-list] brake master cylinder

2008-05-30 Thread Amber Andre
You need a master cylinder made for your year auto. You might be able to get
others to work, but they probably be more trouble to install.

Depends on wheither or not you have drum/drum or disc/drum. You will either
have two the same size or one bigger than the other. Replace with the same
kind.

I am sorry to interrupt but was it woirking ok before?

Was it a Power assisted brake setup? (look for big
doughnut behind master cylinder?)

Does it have a proportioning valve?

It's probably just a matter of getting a replacment
with the same piston size and number of chanbers.

Does that help?

Most LIKELY, the master cylinder was from another chevelle or similar GM
car. I'd go to a good auto supply store and ask to look at master
cylinders from a 68-72 chevelle or camaro. Look for one that has the bolt
pattern ( I THINK ALL GM are the same) and also it must have the same size
outlet fittings for the brake lines. Really should not be much of an
issue. Let us know how you make out.

[Chevelle-list] Is there really a high flow water pump?

2008-05-30 Thread tabius barrett

Hello all...I have a 71 SS 402 and I am still fighting the summer time
over-heat monster. I plan to order an aluminum radiator soon but I remember
someone telling me that the so-called high flow water pumps are no better
than a standard water pump. My overheating seems to really occur at idle (stop
light, traffic, etc.). So here is the question: Has anyone really found a
high-flow water pump for my car and if so, where can i get it and how much?
Also, do you think the aluminum radiator will help?

FORGOT to mention. When you take the old master cylinder off, compare
the back (firewall side) of the new with the old.The depression where
the brake push rod fits needs to be the same depth on both. If one is
significantly different, you will need to return to the parts store look
for another new M/C that matches your old. For some reason, GM used 2
different size depressions during those years.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Is there really a high flow water pump?

2008-05-30 Thread Rick Schaefer
Do a google search for Stewart water pumps web site. They are one of
the premier names in water pumps. They have info on their web site that
explains the differences in pumps. Not cheap but good quality and I'm sure
that they have one for a BB. Whether its better or not , you'll have to
decide.

Do you have a fan shroud? If so, does the fan extend half way into
it?Aluminum fan will probably help, but there are plenty of people
running a BB with stock radiator fan who don't have overheating
problems. There may be a simpler solution. Have you had the existing
radiator cleaned? And what do you mean by overheating? Water steam
out the overflow or the temp rises?

The aluminum will help. I suggest Alumitech Reproductions...I just installed
one into my 67 Nova, and it looks beautiful, and fit perfect.
www.chevellecooling.com is the website I believe.

They do make high flow water pumps. However just because it flows more, doesn't
mean its better. It might cause it to flow too fast, in that the water wont
have a chance to cool in the radiator, making your car even hotter.

What does your cooling system consist of now? How old is your radiator? Do you
have electric fans, or a clutch fan?

Manual drum brakes were standard equipment with both power brakes and power
disc brakes as options. If you are converting to power brakes (you say you
need to order a booster) why not consider power disc brakes? Many companies
offer excellent disc brake conversions. Do a Google search for disc brake
conversions and you'll see a number of good companies such as Master Power
Brakes, Stainless Steel Power Brakes, Inline Tube, etc. and priced from
$900-$1100 in most cases and contain all parts (lines, booster, etc.)
necessary.

Test show that if you have the proper capacity radiator that copper vs
aluminum is a break even.

Go to a 160 thermostat, flush the block, make sure your hoses are not
collapsing inside (do not take out that bottom spring). Test the pressure of
your radiator cap that's important for your over flow system. If you have a
clutch fan replace with an aluminum flex fan. Make sure your fan blades come
to the back lip of your shroud.

Re: [Chevelle-list] contents of chevelle

2008-05-30 Thread Rick Schaefer
Be a little more specific about the brake trouble and someone may have a
suggestion. Also most any auto parts store should be able to order a
booster and master cylinder for you. Probably have it quicker at a lower
price too.

Brakes, Stainless Steel Power Brakes, Inline Tube, etc. and priced from
$900-$1100 in most cases and contain all parts (lines, booster, etc.)
 necessary.

Hi, my name is Debbiy and I was left a 1968 Malibu convertible
chevelle by my late husband. My youngest son (17) and two of my
friends(car people) have worked on her, She is having brake troubles
everything is new from the front wheels to the bake all new lines
cylinders etc... Our question is does anyone know if these cars
came manual or power brakes? I know there was a recall on the brakes
back in 68; but we have know idea if this car was power or manual.
I need to order a push rod, master cylinder and booster, but which one
from year one. Can any one help me? When money and time come
the next cars are a 69' chevelle hard top, and two 56 wagons
one two door and one four door. Ya we like our cars : )
