[Chevelle-list] Towed Home

2008-12-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
My elky left me dead on the side of the road. First time ever. I hit a
railroad crossing at a pretty good clip and when I came down, the motor
quit.Took me a day or 2 to realize that the problem was not in my TPI
setup.I don't have a spark at all. 12 volts to the HEI is good.
Does anyone have a link to a page where I can determine if its the coil or
module or?I found a page which had resistance values for a 4pin
module in a mechanical advance HEI. But I need a page with 7pin
electronic advance HEI information. Thank you.

Rick,
What year is your El Camino? I have a complete 65 Chassis shop Manual. I don't
know if the info is there. Please explain TPI and HEI. Maybe I can Help!

Rick,

Are you getting power at the coil? This engine has a coil off to the
side of the distributor, correct? There is a few wires that go to the
coil...did one of those get snipped? My other suggestion would be to
call Street and Performance. 479-394-5711, they make wiring harness's
for these engines(top notch too) and can help you. I've called them
numerous times asking questions on my TPI set up

Good luck,

Tim

Rick
If you are able to get a copy of Cilton's Repair Manuel for 64-77 Chevelle's,
it gives a good describtion as well as a picture of how to check the coil with
a ohm meter. There is also the check of the Module in the distrubutor that Auto
Zone will check for proper functioning.

Rick, sometimes it is cheaper and saves time to buy a mew module and coil
and try them separately on the car. If one or the other is bad, you will
find out. If not, you can just return them. Also check the wires and end
connectors.

Rick, I believe Dan has the right idea. My two year old HEI quit
intermittently and replacing both coil and module cost less than $35 at
partsamerica.com and took less than an hour to install. The cost was very
cheap compared to the inconvenience and embarrasment of being stranded and
towed.
