[Chevelle-list] Converting a 72 Chevelle to a 70

2008-12-28 Thread Daniel Mascheck
I have a non original 1972 Chevelle and was wondering how much work and the
approximate cost of converting it to a 70 style car!?

Can anyone recommend a good source for a rear view mirror. I'm looking for
one for my 46 Chevy truck.

Going through stuff in my car room today, I came across a 2003 OPG
poster-size calendar w/red 1967 SS Convertible that I had framed in a
2'x3' poster frame years ago.

To make room for some 2009 R/T posters that my brothers got me for
Christmas, I'm going to be unframing this guy and I'm not sure if anyone
would be interested in it and I have no idea it's worth. I'll let it go
for a reasonable offer, as it belongs hanging up in some Chevelle guy's
garage!!!

I can send a photo of it!

P.S. Most of the other 68/69 Chevelle stuff I hd has been cleared out but
I still have a few odds ends left:

- a few 1/64 diecasts (unopened)
- a couple of frameable prints
- a 1/24 scale (unopened) AMT model
- a couple of Chevelle cloth patches

I guess I'll farm out that stuff to ebay in the next few weeks when I
have time!

The 72 dash harness WILL NOT WORK with the 1970 forward harnesses without
MAJOR reconfiguration of the fuseblock. So if you plan on doing this, plan
on buying a dash harness. The only front end parts you can use are the hood
and hinges, everything else is different. Why not just look for a 70
instead of changing a 72?

It would definatly be easier and all if you were to look for a 70, but then
again you're talking to a guy that would take a 68 Chevelle and put a 69 front
end on it for the simple fact I like the small side marker lights on the 69
better than the big box of one on the 68. Or if you want to really screw with
someone how about a '57 Chevrolet with a 56 front end? Muh ha ha ha! I took
a set of fenders for a 66 Chevelle off a 67 model, I guess someone had the same
thoughts as me or more than likely someone wrecked the thing knew where there
was a 66 parts car and robbed its front end.

Re: [Chevelle-list] sail panel install

2008-12-28 Thread ted laidig
The glue I used was also 3m in a spray can.  I used an old plastic container
that I had laying around and sprayed the adhesive into it.  I then applied it
to the parts I wanted to glue on the headliner and sail panels with a throwaway
glue brush .  I bought my sail panels with fabric installed when I purchased
the headliner.  All in all, things came out pretty well on the install for
being a first timer.  Takes time and patience  Don't forget to go to office
supply store and buy a couple dozen folder clips of various sizes.  It really
helps.   Will come in handy for just a sail panel install also.  One more thing
the glue from the spray can sets fast, so be ready. Don't know if the same
stuff is available in a can, but spray cans are what I found in the auto parts
stores here in Central Illinois.  Hope this helps.

Glue I used was from 3M and is made for headliners.   I think that I bought
it at either a parts store or specialized upholstery shop - its been years.
To wrap the material and secure it properly you need to cut darts in it on
the back side. Lay the material flat (face down) , lay the panel on top and
pull the material tight.but not banjo string tight.  (The headliner
material does tighten up over time ). I trimmed it on the back side to have
about a 1 inch border.
Ask your wife or mother or girlfriend about the darts.  Its a sewing
thing and the ladies -of my generation anyway- will be familiar with what you
need to do.  Again, its very important that the glued down material lies flat.
Don't overdo the glue, its sticky and if you get it on the front side of the
panel it won't come off.    Not hard, just take your time.

around the backing panel. Thank you all for sharing your wisdom. Bob

I had this problem with my 69 a couple of years ago and the one thing I can
recommend to you is that you go on E-bay and purchase a FISHER BODY SERVICE

have refered to it a lot of times for adjustment of components.  Worth ever

It would definatly be easier and all if you were to look for a 70, but then
again you're talking to a guy that would take a 68 Chevelle and put a 69
front end on it for the simple fact I like the small side marker lights on
the 69 better than the big box of one on the 68. Or if you want to really
screw with someone how about a '57 Chevrolet with a 56 front end? Muh ha ha
ha! I took a set of fenders for a 66 Chevelle off a 67 model, I guess
someone had the same thoughts as me or more than likely someone wrecked the
thing knew where there was a 66 parts car and robbed its front end.

I'm just inquiring! I would have thought it would be a simple bolt on, on
front and back! I'm putting in a new Painless wiring harness. So you're
saying it's too much to change! I have two cars I'm working on and the
paycheck only goes so far, so it's either keeping a 72 or converting it to
the 70 style, not buy another one! Thanks for the info!

There is no such thing as a good chemical rust
remover. Sandblast it or cut it out and replace it. Naval Jelly
works to a point but will not remove deep pitted rust. Should you decide
to try Naval Jelly, you will need some 000 or steel wool and some warm
soapy water to neutralize it. Make sure you prime and paint it if it's in
an inconspicuos area. Don't try to apply one of those self claimed rust
converter coatings on it, they don't work.

2008-12-28 Thread almenausa
I had some left over from the restoration that I performed on my Chevelle - they were original and looked a little used. I cleaned them up as well as I could but they just didn't look right so I got new material and tried to glue that on usung the 77 spray adhesive. I had to cut the darts as well to get it to form smoothly around the edges, etc. After one summer - they started to bubble a little, I ordered pre-done ones and those are in now - they are starting to bubble as well. I'll have to try something new. I think I'll have them recovered by a professional interior/trim business - maybe a thicker backer board will work.

Considering mine is far from original and I prefer a 69 or 70 style, the 70
would be the easy fix! The question is how much will the conversion cost. I’m
dropping in a blown 468 in the car so it should move along.
