[Chevelle-list] vacuum modulator adjustment
Hey Guys, Need a crash course on adjustable vacuum modulator adjustment. My SS454 shifts short at part throttle and also at full throttle. I know there is a screw in the end of the modulator but do you adjust in or out? How much adjustment can change shift points. It's a turbo 400 car btw. Thanks, Bob

Great news! Glad the PITA is gone. I was ready to unsubscribe but have been on here for years and always enjoy, even if I mostly lurk. How does that unsubscribe work again? Is there is some way to get rid of this Lee Hester joker? I have added him to my junk mail, sent his address to MSN and reported as spam. To no avail this F**k keeps getting through to my in box. [Chevelle-list] Quick time Electric Cutouts
Does or has anyone used the Quick Time Electric cutouts instead of the caps on on your exhaust systems? I'm thinking about a set but that's a lot of bucks if they don't last. Their 90 day warranty isn't too confidence inspiring either. I guess I want to know how well they fit. Do they leak at the butterflies. Have you run into clearance problems ( will be going on a 71 SS 454 stock ride height with long tube headers and x pipe. If you had issues with the company. How long did they last or are they still working. Do any of you use the controller that can be purchased additionally. I know 3 wing nuts and the caps come off but I was just looking at this as an option. Thanks, Bob Belz 71 SS 454

Year One code HEAT3 expires 7/1/10 for 20%. Year One code S6110 expires 7/13/10 for 15%, extra 5% off for over $500 and another 5% for over $1,000. OPG code 0710 expires 8/15/10. Re: [Chevelle-list] 700 R4 Trans
I have a 200-4R in my 70 Skylark (GSX clone) and I am still running the stock 2.73 gear. I keep it in 3rd gear most of the time except on the highway, 55-60 mph. 2,000 rpm is about 78 mph. I have driven it to Miami and Daytona last November and I just got back from the last 3 cities part of the Hot Rod Power Tour. Gas mileage for the last trip was a miserable 14.5 mph with 350-4 engine. 2.73 is way too much gear for a heavy car. The problem will be corrected before the next highway trip but there just hasn't been money in the budget the last 12 months. Chuck Hanson wrote: > Good advice, Rick. [Chevelle-list] Garage door treshhold seal
Anyone have experience or comments on garage door threshold seals? I have 2 16' doors and they let water in when it rains or snows hard. Just getting the inside of the garage sheetrocked, taped. textureds and painted. I don't want any water getting in and wicking up the new drywall. Have looked at Summit (brand unknown) and Storm Shield to date. Also going to install 4" rubber cove base around the interior. Anything worth doing is worth over doing. right? Bob

[Chevelle-list] Off Topic: Theft Prevention
Well our nice little town had 4 late model (3 Doges and 1 Chevy) trucks stolen in the middle of the night Tuesday. All gone without a trace, 3 of 4 within a block of each other, the other a couple miles away. I suspect they went south of the border as this was happening a few years ago. Unfortunately I lost a nice 1975 F100 4x4 back then, my father bought it brand new, we drove it off the showroom floor, it meant a lot to me. I don't fear for my collector cars as they are under lock and key but I do have a 2005 F250 that sits out, no more garage space. I would like to do some things to keep it from getting stolen too. Ideas about kill switches, fuel shutoffs, physical restraint are welcome. If you don't want to share your secrets with everyone please email me off list. I need some do it yourself, make em look elsewhere for an easier target type stuff. Man I HATE thieves! Thanks, Bob Belz

Re: [Chevelle-list] Good By Cruisers?
I buy and own cars that I wanted or had when I was younger. I graduated from H.S. in 1965. 63 Nova SS clone w/350 TH200-4R, 3.55-posi 70 Nova SS clone w/350 Ramjet crate motor, 700R4, Moser 12-Bolt. 70 Skylark GSX clone (Skylark w/ Yellow GSX paint job) 73 Opel GT (mini Corvette lookalike) too good a deal to pass up but I doubt I will keep it after restoration is complete. My late bro-in-law got me interested in old cars, he graduated H.S. in 1957. At one time he owned at least 10 Model A Fords. Re: [Chevelle-list] chrome thermostat housing (water outlet)
I think that using distilled water with your antifreeze helps stop corrosion and maybe waterpump lubricant may help too. I had alway heard the same thing about the cheap chrome waternecks but I used one for years and when I removed my 283 and sold it, the thermostate housing still looked like new. The cast iron one that was on my Buick 350 looks like it was left in a bucket of salt water for years and water pumps will spring a leak too so cast iron has it's problems too. Just a thought but I agree and I would not use one again. Bob Haggard Larry Williams wrote: > Made in China!? [Chevelle-list] Cowl Induction Hood Price
Hi All, I may have found a cowl induction hood setup for my 71. I don't know what all is included, I expect at least the hood and inner and outer doors and supposedly it is GM sheetmetal. Don't know about the air cleaner, and the rest of the stuff to make it work. Can someone ballpark a fair price for this? I know it depends on what all is included but I'd like to have some realistic pricing before I make a commitment. BTW Does anyone have a list of parts for a complete functional setup. Surely some of you have added cowl induction to noncowl inducted cars. Thanks, Bob Belz 71 SS 454

Re: [Chevelle-list] Are your tires safe?
My 70 Nova is a little ole lady car and when I bought it the tires looked as though they had very few miles on them. My brother in law needed some 14" tires for his rice burner pickup so I gave him a pair and he had them installed on the front. It was less than a month before one blew out. I have also bought new tires with chrome rally wheels at a swap meet and found out later that the tires were 6 years old. One pair appeared to have been sitting on a tire rack for years as they were out of round. They balanced perfect but the ride was terrible. Age seems to be very important and I now check the date codes before I let the dealer install them on my rims. Re: [Chevelle-list] car names/Luby 1969 Sports Sedan
Hi All, Thought I'd throw in my car names. I get a lot of grief from friends for naming cars but I don't care, here they are. 1999 Chevy K1500 pickup, black, goes by "Midnight". 2000 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi, black, goes by "Bonnie" (wifes car) 2000 Corvette convertible, Sebring Silver w/ black top, goes by "Little Sport" 1982 Z28 Camaro, black, goes by "The Camaro" (wifes car) 1955 Thunderbird, Thunderbird Blue, goes by "Lil' Bird" (wifes high school car) 1971 SS454 Chevelle, Classic Copper, goes by "Penny" (Copper paint and found a penny stuck between the RF fender and inner fender when I had it apart, penny was a 1972, would have make a better story if it was a 71) 1992 Beretta GT, Red, goes by "Betsy Beretta" (spare car) 1974 Chevy pickup, goes by "Rusty" (wifes old truck, needs resto thus the name) On another note, Dale I was looking at your web site and noticed the Luby dealer script on the trunk of the 69 Sports Sedan, did you know there is a Luby Chevrolet in Denver CO? Re: [Chevelle-list] Let's try again....
I would buy a vacuum gage from your local autoparts store and check your vacuum pressure. If you get one with a pump you can also check to see if the advance is any good. They do go bad and you can buy replacments from Napa or other parts stores. I would also buy a good brand of "stop leak" and follow the directions to see if it will cure the leak. It might not be a permanent fix and then again it may. GM dealers put it in new cars to fix small problems under warranty. It's much easier than pulling the engine just to check the freeze plugs. Re: [Chevelle-list] removing filler neck from gas tank
My first thought would be that you could cut the filler neck with a hacksaw and use a rubber hose to reinstall it if you can't get the tail pipes out of the way. Some metal filings will be left in the tank that may be hard to remove though. Re: [Chevelle-list] AC Delco Battery (off topic) now over tightening
Thanks for the responses, Keith, Regarding the overtightening of the Delco battery posts I can buy into that but 2 were OEM untouched by anyone else and the the other was done by the dealer. Regardless I will look into the lock washer issue. Hey Brian, Since you work for Interstate does your replacement MTP-79 have the vent hardware or do you need to salvage it from the OEM battery? Tom, I did have an old Delco in my Chevelle when I bought it in 1994, that sucker lasted 10 years (really!) before I replaced it. It just finally died. Guess they don't make em like they used to. BTW remember those trunk rods you gave me a number of years back? I finally got them in last spring, just horsed them into place as I didn't have any tool for the install. They work great. No more propped open trunk at cruize nights. Thanks again, Bob Belz
[Chevelle-list] AC Delco Battery (off topic)
Has anyone else had problems with leaking AC Delco sidepost batteries? I had 2 replaced in my 99 Chev truck, first one was under warranty, the second was on my dime, went to an Optima Red Top after that. The leaky battery ruined the positive cables and made a mess of the battery tray and frame rail. I replaced the one in my C5 vette before it had the chance to ruin anything. Put in an Optima there too. Today I pulled the back seat in my wifes Bonneville SSEi and that sob Delco had leaked and ate up the floor pan and made a mess out of everything. The positive post pulled right out. This really sucked with it being under the back seat, battery acid nice and close to the carpet, upolstery etc. Now I need to find a replacement that is configured with the gas release vents that go throught the floor pan. Thanks, Bob Belz 71 SS454 with a Red Top too.

Re: [Chevelle-list] ground up order
They must have found a set after I spoke with them on Monday because I received the trim moulding on Thursday. The quality is POOR so I plan to call Monday and ask if I can return them. The corners on the top edges of the windshield are rough and stretched looking where they made the bend. Overall polish doesn't compair to OEM parts so I hope to find a good set in Charlotte next month or Moultrie, Ga or Daytona in November. I was excited when I saw that someone was carrying repos but like a lot of repoduction parts that are probably made in China, these don't make the grade. Maybe the quality problem is the reason Ground Up delayed the order, these look like they may have been returned. Re: [Chevelle-list] ride height
I don't know about the ride height but I'll be on the tour. We went 3 cities in 2005, 5 last year and plan to make the whole trip this year. My 70 Nova was a little too low in the front due to one coil removed from the springs so I replaced all 4. It raised it close to 2" in the front and 0" in the rear so the 37 year old leafs were just fine and I waisted my $$$. Re: [Chevelle-list] Timing cover pan gasket
John: I just replaced one on a 350 engine we built. I took all the pan bolts out,and it allowed the pan to drop about 1 inch to 1 1/2 in front. I then put the new gasket in and put the bolts back in starting at the front and working to the back. I had a chrome housing the had a small bend in it to the outside and caused mine to leak.Hope this helps Bob 64 SS ---Original Message--- From: The Chevelle Mailing List Date: 01/31/07 21:51:50 To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: [Chevelle-list] Timing cover pan gasket Hi guys...Does anyone have any tips on fixing a leak on the timing cover oil pan gasket on a small block???..Can the oil pan be lowered enough with the engine in the car to replace it?? Re: [Chevelle-list] HELP - Question about body panels
Year One catalog price is $214 and Goodmark is $230. Both places are within driving distance, which I plan to do because I am familiar with bent corners on hoods and trunk lids. I just spoke to YearOne and asked about quality. The salesrep was nice enough to tell me that they have shipped 12 and had 7 returned. Guess I will order from Goodmark. Dale, Does that apply to all years of SS cars after 68 or just the 69 model. Just curious, now I need to look at my cowl tag. BTW I was lucky enough to find 2 build sheets for my 71 SS 454. Leed's Plant KC car. I really would like to know what all the codes are in the various boxes on the build sheet. Some are easy enough but I still would like to know what the "CL" code is for the air cleaner. Bob Belz Not proof positive but research indications show that almost all known SS Chevelles from KC and Baltimore had the letter L on the Fisher Body plate under the lower body paint code. Again, nothing proved or disproved, but stats show this to be the case so far.

Any bad experiences with Yukon gears and Auburn Posi? Since I finished my car in June I have been running the stock 2.56 rear end with RamJet 350 and 700r4 transmission and at 60 mph in lockup mode it is only turning 1,400 rpm's. Replacing the 2.56 with 3.36 will increase the rpm's to 1,840 which will make the engine run better. This car is a highway cruiser that won't see the drag strip anytime soon. I am averaging 20 mpg and hope this doesn't change much. Bob Haggard

I just installed a Classic Auto Air unit in the dash of my 70 Nova and it's a much better unit than Vintage Air. The firewall is flat and the AC unit replaced the heater so everything is in the dash. It uses the existing AC/Heater controls and the fan motor is quiet, similar to factory AC. I would definitly recommend them over the other companies. The instructions were okay but could use a few changes on the Nova but that may not apply to other makes and models. [Chevelle-list] Dennys Chevelle
Denny, Just took a moment to check your site. What a sweet ride. Lots of detail in that car. That and I'm a sucker for black. It's gotta be straight to be painted that color. Mines Classic Copper. I have a love hate / relationship with that color. It changes in different lighting. Sometimes looks brown. I kid others about it being a one year only color because it's ugly. On the upshot it's not another red car. (Doesn't everyone dream of a 70 SS 454 in Cranberry Red) And around here I've never seen another one the same color. The one year color makes for conversation. You may have seen it on the cover of the NPD Chevelle catalog, 2000 edition. Bob
Re: [Chevelle-list] Correct Air Cleaner
I'm glad this topic came up. I have a 71 SS 454 car that came with a dual snorkel air cleaner. It is not a cowl induction hooded car but a legit SS 454 car. One reliable source thought the air cleaner was the original. Could any of you check your build sheets for a 71 SS 454 (Z15) without the ZL2 option. This much I know. The air cleaner box on my build sheet is coded CL. There is a date stamped in the inside of the air cleaner in green ink dated 8/11/70. Schedule no. date is 02-23 from build sheet. Car built at Leed's plant I have never seen another one. Build sheet information from others I can't validate: 1970 dual snorkel = CO code (believed to be around 200 built, LS6 non cowl induction) 1970 w/ cowl induction/ single snorkel open top = DG code 1970 open element = SS code 1971 w / cowl induction = KN code (did find one 71 SS 454 car w / cowl induction hood coded DH). Rumor only, The dual snorkel air cleaners were too noisy and were changed to single snorkel later in the production run. Also if you have a copy of the 1971 Assembly manual from GM look at the page that shows the over view of the LS5 motor. Sheet 1, UPC LS5 clearly shows a dual snorkel air cleaner (no ZL2). Sheet 1, UPC LS3 shows an enclosed single snorkel air cleaner. Could you please pull out those build sheets and check that info in the air cleaner box. Dale, Do you have a data base of build sheets? I thought someone did. Re: [Chevelle-list] hypothetical car flood question
I can tell you from experience (several times) that if you sink your boat that is exactly what you need to do as soon as you get it out of the water. If you do not have the time to drain the fluids and get it started then they tell you to leave it submerged till you do have time (fresh water). The same should be true for automobiles although a 2-cycle outboard engine is much easier to service. Re: [Chevelle-list] transmission question
Kinda hard to understand the price of the ECU but I guess it's "whatever the market will bear." Cost of this project is getting outta hand but I love the way my 98 GMC and 00 AstroVan shift. The computer will not be controling the engine and transmission like the new vehicles but I understand that you program it with a laptop. Guess I will give it a try, now I gotta find a higher stall convertor. Since the 1st gear is so low in the 4L60, maybe it's not necessary. I'm sure there will be some slippage (rear tires). Re: [Chevelle-list] It's ALIVE!!!
If you don't want to drop the tank then syphon out all you can get then add some good premium gas and maybe some additives, I guess. The rubber fuel line at the tank is subject to rot and leak in old cars so you may want to check it or just replace it. I drove my 63 Nova for a couple years before I bought a new tank and I could not believe the crap in the old tank. I guess the filter was doing a good job otherwise it would have stopped up the carb. I live on a lake and every spring the lake is littered with boats that stop running after using last years fuel which usually includes lots of water from condensation. My $.02.
