2008-01-08 Thread Carl Ziegler
As said earlier, the base model platform/heavy Chevy wipers parked on the
windshield and the Malibu and SS had the hideaway up until 1972. I converted
mine and got everything from a Malibu on my 72 including the extra wide
Stainless piece across the bottom of the windshield that the wipers parked on.

Hey all here is a good one. Not long after I got the 71 the car wouldn't start
I just figured it was the fact the positive end of the soleniod was loose or
the crappy battery terminals, which I am not ruling out yet. Anyway today I
jerked the starter off and fixed the soleniod. I tried the key and it bumped
over for a second then quit. Then I tried the lights, nothing. So I thought bad
connection, I wiggled the wires and checked the fuses and nothing. So tomorrow
I'm off to buy some terminals. Any other ideas in case that don't work? Anyway
thanks in advance.

There is a vendor every year at a swap meet I go to has several hundred car

old car titles of cars I've scrapped over the years, but no Chevelle ones
In Indiana an out of state vehicle has to be inspected by the BMV or local law

If you can decipher and ignore the scammers, I have had great luck using
Craigslist. I have traded and came out ahead in most cases but never tried
anything of real value. In Chicago it is pretty popular but the scammers still
try. I just hit the delete key. You are annonymous until you answer the
e-mail. If the person expresses interest I go back and forth via e-mail to see
if the guy is legit. I never give my home phone or address out unless I feel
real comfortable with the potential deal, whatever it is. It is free to use
but don't use your main e-mail address, create a separate one so the potential
spam is eliminated. If you're not near a major city than CL is not well known.
Although I still look on E-bay I haven't tried selling anything since finding
Craigslist. My $.02

Are there any sites out there that highlight trading

have someone haggle with me, try to find a new car

I totally agree with Brad on this. I have about 35 ads on Craigslist alone
trying to rid my life of some of my extras, mostly to buy what I need for my
ongoing projects. The "gooday" is the first sign. A lot of other use "the
item". I just hit the delete key. Every once in a while I will toy with them.
There is a false Paypal scam and US postal money order scams as well when they
try to do it electronically. I do not accept anything other than cash, the
green US postal money orders that have to be purchased with cash or a debit
card or good ole Paypal. I have had buyers open a paypal account just to
purchase from me across the world. I welcome prospective buyers to view my
e-bay feedback to let them know I am for real. I would say 1 in 10 that
contact me are for real and if that 1 is interested enough and is not a "tire
kicker" whatever I am selling is sold. My $.02

Sorry but this is false. The scam often involves forged cashiers
checks. I know of cases where the bank verified the check, the money
cleared, and then weeks later the bank found out it was a forgery. They
then took back all the money from the person's account. They were out the
item and had problems when their account ran dry and checks started
bouncing.

Never wire money Western Union!

I have not heard of problems with Postal money
orders.

If you are suspicious, run. If you want to make the sale, use
Escrow and let them take the risk.

You might want to check with the forum admin to trace the IP address of
this guy to see if he is where he says he is. You can ask for his phone
number - and call it. Scammers usually disappear if you ask or provide a false
number.

Just make sure you wait for their check to clear, it doesn't matter if it
is a cashiers check or not. Still takes three days to clear If the routing
numbers are legit, then your bank will notify you.. A US postal order is
better. Then you can go to the post office and see if it is legitimate or not
  when they run the numbers.

2007-09-24 Thread Carl Ziegler
In the early 80's the 68-72 Chevelle's were the car of choice due to the rules
and the class I ran in on our local asphalt tracks, I went through my fair
share of decent bodies which now I am not proud of. I remember my best one was
a 68, rust-free southern car but to my defense it didn't have a title. When I
destroyed the sheet metal, I skinned another 72 outer shell and made it work on
the 68.

Pelle, they made 2 versions. The hideaway went on the Malibu and the
non-Malibu plain jane stopped on the windshield. There are also 2 different

shorter that parked on the windshield. All the motors where the same. I think
the parts the arms mount to are different as well, but it has been over 10
years since I switched mine over to the hideaway as my car was the basic
Chevelle, non-Malibu. I have had 3 '72's. My $.02

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Vacuum Hose Question

Just noticed today that I am missing a vacuum
hose on my '70 LS5.

On the AC evaporator there is a vacuum can
that is about 4" in diameter and about
31/2" long. This can has two inlets or one inlet and one outlet
on the back side (end of can that faces the
passenger seat) the bottom inlet has a hose attached that connects to a
fitting on the intake manifold. The top inlet has no hose connected.
What should this top inlet or outlet be connected to?

Thanks for the help!

Hi!

I have this strange noise
during acceleration!

Sounds a little bit like a
bolt tapping my M/T aluminum valve covers but a tad sharper!

No marks in the valve covers
indicating that anything is hitting them!

I’ve tried to
adjust timing back & forth 16-8 degrees but it’s still the same!

It’s in sync with
the rpm & I can only hear it when accelerating hard!

Any ideas?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Help bleeding brakes

2007-04-20 Thread Carl Ziegler
This sounds like a similar situation I had with my slave cylinder for my clutch
on my C-20. I had to have help but it worked. 1 open bleeder, 2 have someone
push the brake pedal down and hold it, 3 close bleeder, 4 let the brake pedal
up after it is closed. Repeat as many times as needed. Eventually I finally
got all the air out and then the last couple of times I bled it normally by
pumping it up. That finally worked. Good luck, My $.02

The Prop valve is from a '69, I think. No such pin as you mention. 2
inputs, 3 outputs, 1 idiot wire plug-in (currently not utilized).

I took the 1st MC back, and got another just like it. It seems to be
working better.

I finally got the fronts to bleed!!! And the front wheels are done.
This has not been fun.

Now the rears won't bleed at all, haven't moved an ounce from the
resevoir. I can see bubbles move forward/back as the pedal is pumped
(1 man bleed kit), so I know that the lines are clear and not kinked.
At least some air is getting moved at the rear wheel cylinder as the
pedal is pumped.

I did bench bleed the MC, that went fine.

I'm going to let it sitt over night hoping to let the gravity do it's
thing.

I don't think I've ever had this much trouble bleeding brakes!!

Thanks for the suggestions.

For 72 anyway, there is a pin on the proportioning valve that
must be pressed in to get flow to the rear.

I just sent an email re: "12 Bolt
Yoke" I have a different question and thought I'd better start
a new thread.

When I got my '69 it had a 307 and a 3 spd on the
floor. It seemed pretty quick but bogged down when shifting to second
until the RPMs came up.

Which would be the better combo for the 402
BB?? It certainly shouldn't bog down going into second. I just want
something I have to shift and can listen to while doing it. I don't know
if it would make a difference of 3 shifts or 4, as long as they
are on the floor.

Thanks for any input.

Bondo or Lead?

Who knows when the factory stopped using Lead as their filler of choice?
Namely to fill the gap between the quarter panel and the roof panel…

Today I got the Chevelle sanded about 80% down to the metal, and both quarter
panels are filled with bondo. The right rear has been replaced, probably
around 1981 or so – so I expected that one to be bondo. The rear left was also
filled with bondo. Has that quarter been replaced also – or is that bondo most
likely factory filler?

Tool Definitions
drill PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal
bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings
your soda across the room, splattering it against that freshly-stained
heirloom piece you were drying.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and
then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also
removes fingerprints and hard-earned guitar calluses from
fingers.

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in
their holes until you die of old age.

SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool
used to make studs too short.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads.
Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters. The most often the tool used
by all women.
BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor
touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW: One of a family of
cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy
into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its
course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS: Generally used
after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available,
they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your
hand.

WELDING GLOVES: Heavy duty leather gloves used to prolong the conduction
of intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH:
Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on
fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub you want the
bearing race out of.

WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older
British cars and motorcycles, they are now used mainly for impersonating that
9/16 or ½ socket you've been searching for the last 45 minutes.

TABLE
SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for
testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an
automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes,
trapping
the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

EIGHT-FOOT LONG YELLOW PINE
2X4: Used for levering an automobile upward off of a trapped hydraulic jack
handle.

TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters and wire wheel
wires.

E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool ten times harder than any
known drill bit that snaps neatly off in bolt holes thereby ending any possible
future use.

RADIAL ARM SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used
by most shops to scare neophytes into choosing another line of work.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of
everything you forgot to disconnect.

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 24-INCH
SCREWDRIVER: A very large pry bar that inexplicably has an accurately machined
screwdriver tip on the end opposite the handle.

AVIATION METAL SNIPS:
See hacksaw.

TROUBLE LIGHT: The home mechanic's own tanning booth.
Sometimes called a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, "the sunshine
vitamin," which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits
aside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same
rate
that 105mm howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours of
the
Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat
misleading.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals
under lids and for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil
on
your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips
screw heads. Women excel at using this tool.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A
tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws
into non-removable screws.

AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy
produced in a coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into
compressed air that travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that
grips rusty bolts which were last over tightened 30 years ago by someone at
Ford, and instantly rounds off their heads. Also used to quickly snap off lug
nuts.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or
bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE
CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed
as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to
locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. Women
primarily use it to make gaping holes in walls when hanging pictures.

MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of
cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on
contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector
magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for

With the aid of a mirror you can get the casting off the back of the engine
block if there is room. Usually small balancers are older 283, 307, and 327.
I believe most sb400 have 3 freeze plugs per side as well as a healthy notch
out of the balancer. Of course the real old blocks have the PCV behind the
distributor/intake manifold and older yet had the vent tube. I am sure there
are other signs but nothing beats the number stamped on the block/casting # to
know for sure. My $.02

[Chevelle-list] Twas the night before Christmas

2006-12-24 Thread Carl Ziegler

Glacier

BODY {
MARGIN-TOP:20px;FONT-SIZE:10pt;MARGIN-LEFT:50px;COLOR:#00;FONT-FAMILY:Arial,

'Twas the night before Christmas, and out in the garage,
There wasn't a
trace of a Ford, Toyota, or Dodge.

The presents were wrapped, and the
lights were all lit,
So I figured I'd mess, with the Chevelle a
bit.

I popped the release, and I lifted the hood,
When a deep voice
behind me said, "looks pretty good."

Well as you can imagine, I turned
mighty quick,
And there by the workbench, stood good ol Saint Nick!

We
stood there a bit, not too sure what to say,
Then he said "don't suppose that
you'd trade for my sleigh?"

I said "no way Santa", and started to
grin,
"But if you've got the time, we could go for a spin!"

His round
little mouth, all tied up like a bow,
Turned into a smile and he said, "Hey!
Let's go!!"

So as not to disturb, all the neighbors' retreat,
We
pushed the Silverado, quietly out to the street.

Then taking our places,
to drift down the hill,
I turned on the key, and I let the clutch
spill.

The sound that erupted, took him by surprise,
But he liked it a
lot, by the look in his eyes.

With the tires a' cryin', and exhaust pipes
aglow,
We headed out where, the hot rodders go.

And Santa's grin
widened, approaching his ears,
With every shift up, as I went through the
gears.

Then Santa yelled, "I've never felt so alive!"
So I backed off
the gas, and said "you wanna drive?"

Ol Santa was stunned, when I gave
him the keys,
When he walked past the headlights, he shook at the
knees!

The Big block exploded, with dual exhaust sound!
Santa let out
the clutch and the tires shook the ground!

Power shift into second, again
into third!
I sat there just watching, a loss for a word.

Then I heard
him exclaim, as we blasted from sight,

"Merry Christmas to
all. ..have a hell of a night!!!"

compresser. I just dont think I have my order of operations in the
correct order. Like I said...this is such a dumb problem but it has got
the best of me for the last few hours.

I am pretty sure you won't be able to put them in without the use of a spring

I need you guys to bail me out once
again

I took my front coil springs out last fall with no
problem. However, trying to put the new ones back in is prooving to be a
bigger task than I thought. I have read how other people on the new claim
to have done it but they just dont seem to be working for me. How have you
guys done it? The motor is out and I am putting in big block
springs. Are there any tips or tricks out there you guys can share with
me? I'll take anything at this point. It seems like suck a dumb
thing to have a problem with but that is just how things work in my
garage.

Thanks again

My friend, a collector of Studebakers, would argue that the conversion hurt the
value of the El Camino. They just are not worth the big bucks. He has over 10

I think it was originally an El-Camino that he used Studebaker

have ever had a whole Studebaker.

My
first thought was why? The vehicle was worth so much more as an original
Studebaker; did he have serious rust issues that he couldn't resolve? Exhaust
looks like it's 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" with a 2 1/2" extension.
Also, no pictures, or mention, of the interior. Looks like only one

Re: [Chevelle-list] Frame

2006-11-25 Thread Carl Ziegler
I agree about the Rock Hard finish. The prep work is key to a quality powder
coat "long term". If it is to be hauled on a trailer and/or never see the
rain, salt or any elements than by all means, even powdercoating over light
rust, should be fine. If I ever do a frame off, it will not be using powder.
I am just looking at "long term" forever coating that if done right nothing
would ever happen to it even driving year round. The great thing about powder
is that when it is cured and cooled down it will never get any better than that
while an epoxy/wet paint takes up to 21 days for total cure.

Well gang,

I'm pleased to say that my issue with my '66 WAS in
fact the torque converter loose bolt/missing bolt
problem! I got the car out on Saturday and took her
for a spin after having replaced a missing bolt going
from the TC to the flywheel, and tightening the
others.. I ran for a good 10 miles at 2K RPMs, and no
more chatter. Thank you guys so much, as this will
probably save me $40 annually in excedrin.

The only downfall now is, I now hear the other chirps
and creaks in the car that need to be evaluated 8^]

Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

Gentlemen (and ladies),I've been a member of this list a LOOONNGGG time(since around '98, if memory serves).  Last week Ishot out a cry for help regarding my '66 327, and whatI thought might be a valve tap or something relatedhappening at 2K RPMs.Everyone provided some great input, but 2 folks cameforward suggesting for me to check the torqueconverter bolts, as they'd had the same issue and thatseemed to be the problem for them.  Well tonight, Ifinally escaped wife and daughter and was able to getout to Long Tall Sally to check the torque converterbolt status.  What I found had me pretty shocked:  oneof the three bolts was really loose, and one wascompletely MIA!!!  I went for the infamous coffee can,dug out a new bolt and washer, and got everything backtogether..  Although I haven't had a chance to do a test run yet,to confirm
this was my issue, it sure sounds like apretty good sign.  I have to tell all of you that thiswould probably have been the LAST thing I would havesuspected to be the problem-  But as I mentioned inthe title, you guys definitely know your $h!t, and I'mreally appreciative.  Stay Tuned.Regards,Jim '66 Malibuhttp://mywebpages.comcast.net/jbiii/my66.htmDo you Yahoo!?Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Hello, That Is a Option But First And Formost Make Sure You Have The Right Altenator, You Won't Be The First Nor The Last To Get The Wrong Part. Even If The Book Show"s The Same Number The Printed Number In The Book Could Be Wron. Is There A Chance To Check With Another Parts Supple Place?? Have Them Pull One Off The Shelf And See If Your Bolt Fits.I Am Willing To Bet That Something Is Wrong.Either You Don't Have The Engine You Think You Have Or The Parts Supple House Has The Number Goofed Up Something Isn't Right. You have To Check All Things Out Before Ya Mess With Enlarging The Hole As You Won't Be Able To Take It Back. And If It Isn't For Your Car How Do You Know What Is Is?? How Many Amps Etc. Just Do Alittle Investigation Is What I Am Suggesting. It Don't Cost Anything And You Will Be Sure You Got The Real McCoy!! Hang In There Chev702.

Hello All,

I was replacing my alternator with a new one on my 71 SS 402, and got everything hooked up and when I attempted to insert the long bolt that threads into the engine block, the bolt was too large for the new alternator hole. So i figured the the parts store gave me the wrong alternator, but after trying several different ones at several different auto supply stores, they are all identical and my bolt is too big. Siince obviously using a smaller bolt is not an option (since it threads into the engine block), should i just have the alternator hole machined out since there is no thread in that portion of the alternator?

[Chevelle-list] Average mpg for cars sold in 1980: 23.1. Average gas mileage for cars sold in 2005: 24.7.

2006-10-20 Thread Carl Ziegler
The quality of gas has gone down by cleaning up the emmisions, summer blend.  I travel the midwest 75K on an '05 and the gas sold in Iowa nets me 2-3 less mpg than the Indiana gas because of the ethanol.  I drive the same way.  I really see the difference in my '85 C20 with 7.4L on the ethanol type.  Lucky to hit 11.5 but when I put the good stuff in it I see it near 16. E-85 is not the way to go cost wise either.  Maybe when more facilities are up and running making the stuff the price will go down.  I had a FFV in 2000 when no stations were around to try the stuff but I remembered seeing the estimated mpg of gas being 20/27 and the E-85 being 12-16.  I hate seeing the gas station every day as it is let alone needing to fill up a couple of times a day.  The .10-.20 cent savings here in the midwest makes the $ per mile go up.  I would do my part for the enviroment if the cost per mile was comperable but not for more $. Hillary Rodham Clinton was here about2-3 months ago patting herself on the back for getting GM several milliondollars in grant money for the development of alternate fuel engines(Ethanol) .  She praised Gm for their 10 year effort.  I was surprised tohear that GM has been working on this for that long.If I were paying for facilities and engineers for 10 years to developalternate fuel engines and this is far as we've come, the whole bunch wouldbe working somewhere else. The government should give that
money to the aftermarket industry.  Theyseem to know what we want and respond faster and better than the big guys. They would do a better job with the fuel issue for sure.Jim S.- Original Message - From: "Karl Groves" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: "'The Chevelle Mailing List'" Sent: Friday, October 20, 2006 8:52 AMSubject: [Chevelle-list] Average mpg for cars sold in 1980: 23.1. Re: [Chevelle-list] Manifold vacuum fitting?

2006-09-17 Thread Carl Ziegler
The pictured item is for the vacuum to the trans.  It typically has a hard steel line that goes into that fitting with a short piece of rubber hose to make the seal.  The power brakes are off the back of the carb on bottom, at least that is the way my 72 is.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Best primer - frame/ suspension parts2

2006-09-13 Thread Carl Ziegler
Powders can be formulated to be primers with better rust inhibiting pigments.  We do it all the time for special applications in corrosive atmospheres.  Very costly though and usually you have to gel the primer without fully curing it and then topcoat it and cure both (monobake) them together for proper intercoat adhesion.  My $.02 being a technical service rep for a major paint and powder company

Re: [Chevelle-list] Converting to a 4 speed.

2006-08-16 Thread Carl Ziegler
If you have not decided on what 4 speed to get, ask many questions.  The rear end gear dictates your choices unless your wanting to change that as well.  Many auto cars have highway gears and are not friendly to M21 style gearing.  I've been down that road with a 3.08 and it is not an enjoyable start off in first. Not to sound like a chemist, which I am not...but most cheap lacquer thinners are cheap because of the raw materials use to blend them together.  Prep type thinners stay away from the oily type thinners (mineral spirits, VM&P Naptha ect.) and also stay away from the real strong thinners that are sometimes present in the lacquer thinners (Ketone family ie. MEK, MIBK, MAK) which sometimes are to strong and lifts the paint that you are just trying to clean the wax, grease and oil from a surface.  My $.02

Me too on the hot water line busting.  Slab home in Texas, I had moved while my wife and kids were still there.  The house was sold and just waiting for the close and the move.  Water was leaking out between the brick and slab, what a mess.  The hot water tank was blocked by a bunch of stuff in the garage and I had to talk a hysterical wife through shutting it off.  I feel for anyone that happens for.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Nascar Chevelle?

2006-06-01 Thread Carl Ziegler
I have had several circle track 71-72 Chevelle stock cars in the mid 80's.  That was the best and easiest car "stock type" in my class to make handle on the 1/5-1/3 mile asphalt oval.  Before the track rules changed to GM engines in GM cars which opened it up to the rest of the 112" WB cars to be used.  73-77 were just to heavy and the 78-on up were to new and expensive in my days of racing.  Those were the days and some of the most fun that I have ever had. __Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Well I will probably get banned for mentioning the "F" word but if it were me in your situation I would get a Taurus Wagon.  2000-up.  Good look with the alloy wheels.  Very dependable and good economy for the size of car.  I routinely get 24-28 mpg mixed.  I had a dark blue one with the rear doors and the 3 back windows with the darkest tint available.  I carried a load which set the car down.  Our company leases these and since 2000 was the only car you could get.  Anyway they go a long time as do a lot of cars nowadays.  My $.02 and sorry if I offend anyone.
