Hardly, but I did get a few things out of
there and a least this time brought back less then I started with.

Between the Chevelle taken apart
again, my sisters '70 Dart project in there, not to mention all the parts that go with both cars, my
garage is a mess right now...drives me crazy. Pretty bad when I have a 3 car
garage and I can get any of the drivers in there. Just to keep the peace, I'm
going to have to do something before the snow starts falling on the wifes
car..

I just picked up a 454 4
bolt block a few weeks ago at a swap meet for $400. I went down there with the
thought of cleaning out my garage. I started the day with $60 and ended with
$59, so I figured I got the block for $1 :-)

Four bolt mains (original or not) are not going to "give" you more
horsepower as such, but they may just give you a bit more insurance on
the bottom end.  There are a lot of very strong 2-bolt main blocks out
there putting out some good horsepower numbers.  It can be a status thing
  (as in, "yeah, 454 with 4-bolt mains, 3/4 cam, 12.5:1 TRW's, and a Holley
double-pumper") or simply peace of mind knowing you have a stronger lower end
if you ever need it.  As usual, it boils down to your preference and what
you're going to do with the car.

Given the choice between the two at the same time for about the same
money, sure, the 4-bolt everytime.  But, waiting and waiting for one to
come along that somebody doesn't think is made of gold so you can maybe,
  sometimes race it (legally)?

the muncie is 6.25 inches shorter than the PG. Do
I need a new driveshaft or does the bellhousing

driveshaft. In other words how thick is the bellhousing?

Anybody out there with a junk set of BB headers they want to get rid of. I'm
ready to start my fresh BB and break it in. I got a new pair of ceramic
coated Hooker Comps but they adamantly say DO NOT BREAK IN NEW ENGINE WITH
NEW CERAMIC HEADERS. They say it will damage the coating. They also say if
you do, it will negate the warranty. So I thought I would get some junk
headers and do my break in with them.

not as sensitive to the heat!?

Whish starter are they talking about? which one will fit?

As it is now the starter sometimes gets very hot & refuses to run.
And obviously always when it's most inconvenient ;-)

your engine and you want a simple and clean ignition system, this is the
distributor for you. Built down inside the billet aluminum housing there is a powerful
inductive ignition module. This module is responsible for sending plenty of
spark energy to the coil no matter what rpm you're at. The distributor relies
on MSD's race proven magnetic pickup for accurate trigger signals. Just above the pickup there is an easy-to-adjust mechanical

[Chevelle-List] Can't get her to fire....

2003-06-24 Thread Cutter169
Ok I could really use some insight here. I can't get my '66 Chevelle to fire
up. I had been driving it since the rebuild, but something just did not feel
right when I got on it a little. It proceeded to worsen to the point that
once I shut it off I could not get it to fire up again.

I've swapped carbs (a 750 Demon and the 750 Carter that was on the engine
prior) and HEI units (Pertronix and the stock unit that was on before) to no
avail. The HEI conversion was done prior to me getting the car, but it I had
never had a problem in the two years prior.

I even got to the point where I pulled the heads and the timing cover to see
if there was a problem...nothing I could find.

I get good compression on all cylinders.

Question: If I put a timing light on any plug wire, should it not fire as
the engine turns over? The only wire that will show any light it #1, all
don't light the gun. Could something be wrong with BOTH distributors? Is
there a way to test? And if they are both bad what would had caused that?

My hope is that there is something simpler just sitting in plain sight, but
I've about exhausted everything I know of.

thanks

Ron

RE: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster kit install

2003-06-05 Thread Cutter169
I had the same problem with the kit when I put it on...look at those
brackets for about 30 minutes before I swapped them and everything just
dropped in.

The only thing I have to do is run down to the muffler shop and have them
seal it up. My welding skills are somewhat limited..

Other then the the kit was a simple bolt in.

FYI,

here is a pretty good article on installation of the American Thunder kit on

I am glad that you mentioned the reversed diagrams too. When mine came, I

The good news is that the installation of my Flowmaster American Thunder kit
was very straightforward and easy. The system lines up extremely well to the
stock hanger points. the one thing that took up more time than anything else
was figuring out that everywhere the instructions said "right" it meant
"left" and vive versa. There is onr diagram that says "left side from center
looking outward" accompanied by an arrow pointing to the left labeled "front
of car". Well, here in the northeast, when you are at the center looking out
toward the left side of the car, the front is to your right.

So, there's one caveat, plus the fact that if your car has never had duals
the mount holes on the left side may have never been tapped, and you may
need to buy 2 bolts for that side.

My system is not quite finished because I need a pipe cutter that can handle
2.5" pipe in order to trim the front pipe to size. In other words, about
another half hour's work tops.

called Blast-Tech (303-840-9191). I used them on a few items when I pulled
my engine and I was pretty impressed..enough to hold off putting it back

new aluminum crossflow raditor today!), hood hinges...pretty much anything
and everything thats in the engine compartment that I can unbolt.

Here's what
Jegs has on them (where I bought mine):

The SpeedPro

if it were my money, I'd wait for something better. For $16,500 the car had
pretty much be in great shape, regardless if it is a SS or not. From what
you describe (rust, interior, mechanical, etc) half that amount sounds too
high to me.

There are alot of nice cars you can find in the $16,500 range, not to
mention what you could do with the $20,150 (if not more by the time you try
to make it "right") you'd have invested in this one.

Just my 2 cents worth..

As some of you may know, I have been looking for a 1971 SS convertible for a
couple years now. Today I had one checked out by a mechanic. It looks like
a real one, but doesn't have a remote mirror. The engine is not original.
It needs a new top and interior should be done too. There is probably $1500
of mechanical work that needs to be done. (new brakes, gaskets everywhere,
hoses, etc.)
There is a little rust in the rear quarters and some bolts are missing for
the fronts. I could go on.

Here is the dilema, they are asking 16,500 for it. The $1500 for mechanical
and probably $2500 to do the interior and the top, gives me a good driver,
that probably is a clone. It has correct dash, etc. but the heavy front
sway bar is missing and there isn't a rear one.
BUT, it has power bucket seats, factory air (working), power windows and a
remote trunk release.
It doesn't seem like it would be worth it to strip it to metal and paint it.

So, doesn't $16,500 seem too high. And even if it was $14,000, would it be
worth getting?

THANKS!

Mark

Sorry guys. Been in the mid-70's all January here in the metro Phoenix
area. (That's almost 10 degrees warmer than usual - even for here).110
in July and August is no different than 10 in January and February. I lived
in Massachusetts once.

But it's our show and cruise season.

Once again, I feel compelled to plug the greatest car spectacle I've ever
attended - Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. I was there last Saturday and
I've got to say that it just keeps getting better every year. Everything
from Dusenbergs to Ferraris. But, muscle cars dominated the procedings and
have taken the world's fancy by a storm. Where once the European exotics
generated the most interest, things are shifting to classic Detroit muscle
now. Chevelles were extremely well represented this year. Check out the
following link and you'll see what I mean. Search on Chevelle:

 http://barrettjackson.com/auctionresults/default.asp

A lot of the reason for the high prices is that deep-pocketed baby boomers
from all over the world come to Scottsdale in January. Barrett-Jackson is
the premier event and has spawned several others here, too. At
Barrett-Jackson, 8000 registered bidders vie for around 800 cars - hence the
higher prices.

The auction is only part of the spectacle. Hundreds of vendors. Absolutely
a must see if you're ever in the neighborhood in January. Come to think of
it, it's a good reason to come in January. That and the 75 degree sunny
weather. Hell, I got a little sunburn Saturday!

Cheers!

Dave,
where are you at in Ohio?

While I agree with you that some of the boys in blue in some places,
mostly hiway guys and some little town guys, can be a little "tight", I
know one great city cop that talks common sense. He's a great member of
our Tri-State Chevelle club. In fact we made him our Sgt-At-Arms :) He's
on this list so be expecting some comments.

As for the winter and cold ok ...have to agree a bit there. Pretty
hard to do much including work on cars. While my garage is heated, when
you do something where you need to get rid of fumes letting a 10
degree wind come through kinda shivers your wrenches.

But the one thing I will have to disagree with you on is the general
statement that Ohio is not the car friendliest place in the world. Ok
..well maybe not THE friendliest ...at least in the sense that you refer
to, but with Jegs, Summit, Flaming River, and a whole bunch of other car
related businesses I can't even think of being located here, and the
great shows in Columbus such as Good Guys, big events at the raceways,
being centrally located so we can go to Chevellabration in a few hours,
Muscle car nationals in even less, Indy for a while host of car related
events, and even Carlisle on the other side. did I mention Michigan
above us?

Well I think you get the

You could always use the stripper "Aircraft Remover" It's nasty stuff though
so you have to use gloves and peel the bubbles up paint off with a putty
knife and neutralize it with water after. (You do have to use gloves when
applying and when scraping and make sure to wash it all off otherwise
nothing will stick to the body afterwards)Man that stuff burns. Used it on a
'71 Monte years ago and it works great.

The problem with using sand is it can warp and work-harden body panels which
ruins them. Sandblasting a car takes an expert that really knows his stuff
and those people with the expertise are uncommon. I just wouldn't do it.
Even if it costs a little more, the other methods will ensure a good job.
This is not a good place to be scrimping on money.

E-Bay support are a bunch of jock wads with no brains and no sense. They
will not respond and if they do they will tell you they see nothing wrong.
They are a billion dollar a year corporation who primary objective is to
make money. Do you think that they are going to scorn this guy who makes
them about 1,000.00 on month in commissions. Look at the Power seller logo,
this means he does over 2,000.00 a month in e-bay sales and gets to have
that on his site. E-bay does not care about the little guy who gets burned
by a seller and you basically have no re-course in the matter also. The
seller has all the advantages to the buyer. When you buy from a seller you
put your trust in him that what he sells its what you expect to get, but if
it doesnt meet your expectations your screwed. And if your purchased your
item through Paypal you have no re-course either, t! hey do not get your
money back on items that do not meet the description, if its not as
advertised your screwed again. So the only re-course you may have is to give
the guy a negative feedback, but with over 5,000 positives what is one more
negativeJust my opinion.Have bought many things from him
and returned a few as well with no problems. Maybe the guy is on vacation or
away on business ( this is normally e-bay's response ) Good Luck

I liked my old 327 that I had built. Started life in a '68 GMC 3/4 ton, then
made it into my first '66 Chevelle, and then tucked it into a '69 GTO
(actually it was a LeManns, but it did have a GTO hood :-))

I made a few modifications - 12.5:1 compression, 700 cfm double pumper,
nasty litte cam...fun to drive - when I had the right gas.

As they both have a 4" bore, a 350 essentially is a stroked 327. (327 stroke
is 3.25", 350 is 3.48", 383 is 3.75"). The journal size on the crankshafts
changed in '68, so if you have a '68 or later 327, a 350 crank would drop in
without any work.

327 engines don't have quite the torque of the larger motors, and they
like to rev. This is usually better for a smaller car. The ideal
starting place for a heavier Chevelle would be a 350 and make it a 383.
I'm not sure if anyone had stroked a 327, but this might be a way to get
more from the block you have, if that is your concern.

According to the "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide" (pg. 87) the standard
tire for a 65 SS was a 6.95x14 blackwall Firestone. Optional sizes were 7.35x14

7.75x14 Gold Stripe by Firestone. It also said a common option was the standard

This sounds exactly like a problem I had with my Corvette. It was
corroded contacts at the hi/low switch in the footwell. Pull the
connector and you can check the switch operation with a continuity/ohm
meter. If it is OK, it is likely the connector or a wire under the
hood. I removed the foot switch and cleaned the contacts and the
connector (dremel with wire brush), and then it worked fine. This is a
simple and free solution, so if it does not work, you are not out
anything.
