Hardly, but I did get a few things out of there and a least this time brought back less then I started with. Between the Chevelle taken apart again, my sisters '70 Dart project in there, not to mention all the parts that go with both cars, my garage is a mess right now...drives me crazy. Pretty bad when I have a 3 car garage and I can get any of the drivers in there. Just to keep the peace, I'm going to have to do something before the snow starts falling on the wifes car.. There are a lot of very strong 2-bolt main blocks out there putting out some good horsepower numbers. It can be a status thing (as in, "yeah, 454 with 4-bolt mains, 3/4 cam, 12.5:1 TRW's, and a Holley double-pumper") or simply peace of mind knowing you have a stronger lower end if you ever need it. As usual, it boils down to your preference and what you're going to do with the car. Given the choice between the two at the same time for about the same money, sure, the 4-bolt everytime. Install it, connect three wires and you're ready to roll. This distributor is much like the HEI, except it does not have an internal coil. If the bulk of an HEI won't fit in your engine and you want a simple and clean ignition system, this is the distributor for you. Built down inside the billet aluminum housing there is a powerful inductive ignition module. This module is responsible for sending plenty of spark energy to the coil no matter what rpm you're at. The distributor relies on MSD's race proven magnetic pickup for accurate trigger signals. Just above the pickup there is an easy-to-adjust mechanical advance. MSD supplies different advance springs and stop bushings so you can custom tailor an advance curve to match your application. Also, a vacuum advance canister supplies great cruising economy! [Chevelle-List] Can't get her to fire....
Ok I could really use some insight here. I can't get my '66 Chevelle to fire up. I had been driving it since the rebuild, but something just did not feel right when I got on it a little. It proceeded to worsen to the point that once I shut it off I could not get it to fire up again. I've swapped carbs (a 750 Demon and the 750 Carter that was on the engine prior) and HEI units (Pertronix and the stock unit that was on before) to no avail. The HEI conversion was done prior to me getting the car, but it I had never had a problem in the two years prior. I even got to the point where I pulled the heads and the timing cover to see if there was a problem...nothing I could find. I get good compression on all cylinders. Question: If I put a timing light on any plug wire, should it not fire as the engine turns over? The only wire that will show any light it #1, all don't light the gun. Could something be wrong with BOTH distributors? Is there a way to test? And if they are both bad what would had caused that? My hope is that there is something simpler just sitting in plain sight, but I've about exhausted everything I know of. thanks Ron - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The system lines up extremely well to the stock hanger points. the one thing that took up more time than anything else was figuring out that everywhere the instructions said "right" it meant "left" and vive versa. There is onr diagram that says "left side from center looking outward" accompanied by an arrow pointing to the left labeled "front of car". Well, here in the northeast, when you are at the center looking out toward the left side of the car, the front is to your right. So, there's one caveat, plus the fact that if your car has never had duals the mount holes on the left side may have never been tapped, and you may need to buy 2 bolts for that side. My system is not quite finished because I need a pipe cutter that can handle 2.5" pipe in order to trim the front pipe to size. In other words, about another half hour's work tops. RE: [Chevelle-List] Purchase help
if it were my money, I'd wait for something better. For $16,500 the car had pretty much be in great shape, regardless if it is a SS or not. From what you describe (rust, interior, mechanical, etc) half that amount sounds too high to me. There are alot of nice cars you can find in the $16,500 range, not to mention what you could do with the $20,150 (if not more by the time you try to make it "right") you'd have invested in this one. Just my 2 cents worth.. Today I had one checked out by a mechanic. It looks like a real one, but doesn't have a remote mirror. The engine is not original. It needs a new top and interior should be done too. There is probably $1500 of mechanical work that needs to be done. (new brakes, gaskets everywhere, hoses, etc.) There is a little rust in the rear quarters and some bolts are missing for the fronts. I could go on. Here is the dilema, they are asking 16,500 for it. The $1500 for mechanical and probably $2500 to do the interior and the top, gives me a good driver, that probably is a clone. It has correct dash, etc. but the heavy front sway bar is missing and there isn't a rear one. BUT, it has power bucket seats, factory air (working), power windows and a remote trunk release. It doesn't seem like it would be worth it to strip it to metal and paint it. So, doesn't $16,500 seem too high. And even if it was $14,000, would it be worth getting? THANKS! Been in the mid-70's all January here in the metro Phoenix area. (That's almost 10 degrees warmer than usual - even for here).110 in July and August is no different than 10 in January and February. I lived in Massachusetts once. But it's our show and cruise season. Once again, I feel compelled to plug the greatest car spectacle I've ever attended - Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. I was there last Saturday and I've got to say that it just keeps getting better every year. Everything from Dusenbergs to Ferraris. But, muscle cars dominated the procedings and have taken the world's fancy by a storm. Where once the European exotics generated the most interest, things are shifting to classic Detroit muscle now. Chevelles were extremely well represented this year. Check out the following link and you'll see what I mean. Search on Chevelle: http://barrettjackson.com/auctionresults/default.asp A lot of the reason for the high prices is that deep-pocketed baby boomers from all over the world come to Scottsdale in January. Barrett-Jackson is the premier event and has spawned several others here, too. At Barrett-Jackson, 8000 registered bidders vie for around 800 cars - hence the higher prices. The auction is only part of the spectacle. Hundreds of vendors. Absolutely a must see if you're ever in the neighborhood in January. Come to think of it, it's a good reason to come in January. That and the 75 degree sunny weather. Hell, I got a little sunburn Saturday! Cheers! RE: [Chevelle-List] best 327 recipe?
I liked my old 327 that I had built. Started life in a '68 GMC 3/4 ton, then made it into my first '66 Chevelle, and then tucked it into a '69 GTO (actually it was a LeManns, but it did have a GTO hood :-)) I made a few modifications - 12.5:1 compression, 700 cfm double pumper, nasty litte cam...fun to drive - when I had the right gas. As they both have a 4" bore, a 350 essentially is a stroked 327. (327 stroke is 3.25", 350 is 3.48", 383 is 3.75"). The journal size on the crankshafts changed in '68, so if you have a '68 or later 327, a 350 crank would drop in without any work. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Brad Waller Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 7:04 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] best 327 recipe? 327 engines don't have quite the torque of the larger motors, and they like to rev. This is usually better for a smaller car. The ideal starting place for a heavier Chevelle would be a 350 and make it a 383. I'm not sure if anyone had stroked a 327, but this might be a way to get more from the block you have, if that is your concern. RE: [Chevelle-List] Hot August Nights - Reno, Nevada
was planning on meeting some friends there, but with the new house and all, I figured it'd be best to stay at home and get some stuff done. Besides it'll give me some time to work on the car before the Super Chevy event here in mid August.. RE: [Chevelle-List] tire math 2
According to the "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide" (pg. 87) the standard tire for a 65 SS was a 6.95x14 blackwall Firestone. Optional sizes were 7.35x14 and 7.75x14 in black and whitewall, with various plies. Z16 option was 7.75x14 Gold Stripe by Firestone. It also said a common option was the standard 6.95x14 with whitewall (RPO P67). RE: [Chevelle-List] No low beams
yep sounds like the same problem I have had. My old '68 GMC truck had the problem as well as the Chevelle. Replaced the dimmer swith and it worked fine. (actually with the truck I drove with the hi-beams on, just unplugged them until I replaced the switch). I just ordered a new headlight switch > because the old know is broken off. Is the no low beam > problem possibly the switch and should I do nothing > until the switch arrives and is replaced? What would be > the diagnostic path to follow for this problem? This sounds exactly like a problem I had with my Corvette. It was corroded contacts at the hi/low switch in the footwell. Pull the connector and you can check the switch operation with a continuity/ohm meter. If it is OK, it is likely the connector or a wire under the hood. I removed the foot switch and cleaned the contacts and the connector (dremel with wire brush), and then it worked fine. This is a simple and free solution, so if it does not work, you are not out anything. What can I do about scratches in the glass of my '66? Is there a way to clean it up, or am I forced to replace it? Ron p.s. Off to Bandimere today. They are having Coy's Street Machine Showdown. RE: [Chevelle-List] new carpet
just the opposite for me..I had a hell of a time with installing a headliner in my '66..just could not get it to go in just right, or get the wrinkles out of it. I've got a new one in a box that I was just planning on having someone else install. Its funny how something that would seem as simple as putting in a new carpet can cause problems, while the new headliner, which was what i was worried the most about, practically fell into place. Oh well, all the work I've put into this car since december ( welded in new floorboards, replace windshield, rebuild rear end, sway bar, lift bars, totally new interior, paint dash, gauges, etc..) will be forgotten about when I finally get to pull her out of the garage in a few weeks. Damn I need that.. Take 'er easy Dan McIntosh 65 Malibu
[Chevelle-List] Seat Belt Help
Can someone with a '66 tell me how long the front seat belts. I need the measurement for each the male and female parts. Also did a '66 come equipped with retractors? I bought some aftermarket belts from Andover that was susposed to be the correct length, but the male end seems way too long (maybe because of the lack of retractors?). The rear belts I got from them seem to be fine.
