Re: [Chevelle-list] floor pans
Jim, I'm in the middle of a frame off on my '65 convertible too. I did just what you're talking about in the trunk floor. I figured it to be good for sound deadening I liked the non-skid finish for the occasional time when I have to haul something.I sealed everything with epoxy primer seam sealer then rolled on 3 coats it came out great. I've been debating about what to do under the carpet since I'm just about ready to replace the front driver's floor pan section myself. Re: [Chevelle-list] Owning a convertible
Owning both, also 65's, the only possible downsides that I can think of are: Cold in the winter No rear shelf for speakers The upside: It's a convertible. Put the top down for your test drive you'll be grinning probably won't want to get out of it. Do crawl into the trunk look at the rain gutter system. Also roll down the rear windows use a flashlight to look at that part of the gutters too. Mine had a little rot in the trunk area along the seams, but it's pretty easy to access nobody can see it without crawling in on their backs to look at it. Re: [Chevelle-list] Is there really a high flow water pump?
I'm coming into this one a little late, but are you boiling over or just seeing elevated temps on the gauge? If you're not boiling over I wouldn't worry too much.My 454 with flex fan, no shroud ran consistently at 180 idling would jump up to 200 pretty quickly, but it never boiled over.If you check your gauge 15 minutes after you shut the car off you'll likely be scared by the temp that you see that happens every time you shut it off.But again, if it's not puking coolant all over the ground don't sweat it too much. Just my .02, or is that .06 worth at today's rates :-) Dean Vandergriff From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Rightler Sent: Saturday, May 31, 2008 10:46 AM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Is there really a high flow water pump? A 160 thermostat won't fix anything. It's overheating because the temp of the coolant is higher than that of the thermostat at all times menaing it's staying open and coolant is not staying in the radiator to cool down. There is a such thing as running too cold. Flex fans are junk...period. They flow LESS air then the RPMs are in the mid range. You should be running a 180-185 thermostat in a 402 along with a 19 7 blade clutch fan and the correct fan shroud. GM engineered this for a reason...it works. I have a stock cooling system on my 70 SS 454 and never have overheating problems with it. Another thing that comes into play in this situation that alot of people don't realize is the size of the water pump pulley. Does it have the correct one on it? Re: [Chevelle-list] off topic garage lighting
Harlan, I do lighting design work for a fluorescent fixture manufacturer. There is more than one type of both T12 T8 lamps. If your friend is using an F96T12HO lamp, two of them have a system wattage of 216 watts around 9000 lumens per lamp. F96T12 slimline is actually a 75 watt lamp with a system wattage of 158 around 6300 lumens per lamp. These are both 8, T12 lamps my wattage figures are based on magnetic ballasts (most likely for older fixtures). Incidentally, both of these lamp types are rated for 12000 hours per lamp. T8 slimline lamps are a 59 watt lamp have a system wattage for two lamps of 110 watts, are rated at 5950 lumens per lamp, a 20,000 hour life. The 86 watt T8 HO has a system wattage of 160 watts, 8200 lumens per lamp, 18,000 hour life. The 4, 32 watt T8 lamp is rated for 20,000 hour life you can operate 4 of them on a single ballast at 114 watts 2950 lumens each. All of my figures for the T8 lamps are based on solid state, electronic ballasts. Four of these is a good replacement for two of the 8ft, T8 slimline lamps. You can get the same light output at about the same energy cost youre buying a less expensive lamp thats easier to store dispose of since its only a 4 lamp. Bottom line, be sure of what youre comparing. You could replace T12HO with T8 slimline fixtures save about 50% on electricity, but then youd only end up with about 2/3 of the light that you started with. That is a $100 discount from the factory pricing. We'll need a minimum of 10 orders for the discounted pricing. If you are not familiar with Classic Air check out the systems at www.classicautoair.com Classic systems are designed specifically for each model and year and is the only supplier to offer a kit to fit 70 -72. All of the systems utilize the factory heater controls to control the A/C and Heat functions and the system has a true dehumidified defrost cycle. There are some other significant advantages to the Classic system. First is the fact that other vendors only have one coil under the dash. That coil is split and part is used for cooling and the rest is for the heater, maybe 2/3's cool and 1/3 heat. The result is less cooling capacity because there is less surface area to do the heat transfer. This will be particularly noticeable in a car as big as the Chevelle, probably wouldn't notice in a 2 seat street rod. Classic uses a separate coil for each function, like the OEM setups. The higher surface area allows more air to be cooled to a lower temperature much faster. The result is being able to cool the inside of a larger car much quicker and handle the cooling chores better on those 95 degree days. The other issue with the single coil is the possibility of freezing up the heater, cracking the coil and leaking antifreeze into the interior. The farther South you go the less need to run higher ratios of antifreeze as the chance of really cold weather is slim compared to the North, combine that with a low refrigerant charge and the evaporator will freeze up, breaking the heater core. Then to add insult to injury, many of the suitcase's are sealed and can't be serviced. It will have to be sent back to the factory or just totally replaced if out of warranty. The suitcase that Classic builds can be disassembled and serviced if need be, for the price of the O ring that seals the two halves together. Classic uses an extruded nylon shaft for all of the damper and air doors in the suitcase used to direct the air flow. Others use plastic doors with a steel wire shaft, these have a tendency to rust and stick after 5 or 6 years, and because the case is sealed, they can't be fixed. Under Dash Unit Engine Compartment The Perfect Fit system comes with everything (nuts, bolts, screws, ducting, dash bezels, firewall block off plates, wire harness, suitcase, compressor, compressor bracket, evaporator, drier, hoses, even rubber grommets for the radiator support). One other nice touch is the supplied adapters to hook up the defroster duct to the suitcase, other suppliers leave that up to you to figure out. The only thing you supply is the freon, drive belt and crank pulley. If your planning on keeping your car for a number of years and really want an AC system that works better than the factory unit and provides 20 - 30% more cooling capacity than many of the other vendors, the Classic system is by far the better choice. Classic makes kits for all years of Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, Impala, Corvette , Tri-Fives and trucks as well as older Mustangs and Mopars. These kits were designed for non-A/C cars, but are now available for some original A/C cars. Let me know if your interested. It usually takes about two weeks to put all the components together and ship and there are some optional items like polished compressors and driers. My car is a 65 with an external regulator setup so theres a blue wire a black with white stripe. If youre staring at the back of the alternator the tab on the missing plug is supposed to go toward the top of the hole, which wire goes to which side? Thanks, Dean Vandergriff
RE: [Chevelle-list] Big Block in a '65
Phil, I've tried both couldn't tell much difference. Eventually both would level out about the same. The heater works great though! I would have thought the aluminum heads would help your SBC's cooling. I'm considering buying a set for my next BBC for that reason along with the weight savings. I'm also going to switch to electric fans. I think my fan was probably my weak link. I was running an older GM flex fan since I don't have clearance for a clutch fan. The 160 runs about 170 normal and around 210 if caught in traffic. The 180 will run around 190 and push 225+ in traffic. That makes me nervous. This is not a daily driver. The advantage to the single fan is the motor is only 3.39" deep where the dual 11" are 4.25". Disadvantage is the motor is in the center (in line with the water pump pulley) as opposed to being offset from center. Another option would be to mount a pair of 10" fans individually. Each are 10.6" wide (21.2" total), 11.26" high on the mounting hole centerlines, and the fan motor is 3.7" deep. A single is rated at 1070cfm so that would still give 2140cfm total and would give offset motors if clearance is a problem. If anyone is interested, I have Spal spec sheets for 9", 10", 11", 12", 13", 14", and 16" fans in Adobe .PDF format and are downloadable from the Spal web site (http://www.spal-usa.com/). Fortunately it starts right up so the stalling is more of a nuisance but I'dstill like to fixit. The previous owner said he replaced the Throttle Position Sensor and rebuilt the distributor. I think there's something wrong with the TPS or TBI itself. If I hold the rpm just above idle while holdingthe brake, it won't stall, but if I just let it idle where it's set it's more likely to stall when Itake off. I was going to raise the idle to see if that helped, but I didn't see an idle adjustment screw. If anyone has any experience with a TBI or has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it. (Funny, the vehicle was fine up in the Pacific Northwest.) As you know, the temperature port for this early vehicle is located in the intake manifold adjacent to the thermostat housing. It does not have a temperature sensor in the heads like later models. Not seeing another available port, I simply disconnected the wire for the temperature light and left it for another day. Is there a solution that will allow both the gauge and light to function on this vehicle? There does not seem to be another available port. There is a smaller-diameter plug toward the back of the manifold in front of the distributor. Does anybody know if this is an oil or vacuum fitting? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. A second question: How hot is too hot for sustained driving in the desert heat? I installed a larger radiator which has greatly increased the vehicle's cooling capacity, but I would like to know the opinions of the group as to what temperature is really safe. The engine is a smooth but poky 283 4-bbl originally rated at 225HP. It was rebuilt in the late 80s without any performance pieces. Thanks, gents. These dropped right over the '65 small block frame brackets everything bolted up fine. I've been cruising around on this combo for 4-1/2 years now. If I get a few minutes tonight, I will check the part numbers in my '65 assembly manual to those listed below. I know a little while back there was a bunch of mail about the big block/small block frame bracket. I did a little research on my own. First I checked the frame brackets on my 71 original LS5 car. The part numbers were 3980711 and 3980712 for the left and right big block brackets. Then I checked my factory assembly manual and it also showed the same part numbers used in 70 big block chevelles. So I happen to have those brackets to bolt to my crossmember and my problem is solved. But here is the question that maybe someone out there can answer. Looking at the factory assembly manual it shows the same part number brackets used for 350 small blocks. But a different part number frame brackets for 307 small blocks. So when it comes to 68 thru 72 chevelles there may be no such thing as separate big block / small block brackets. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Hello Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Mitch, Welcome back, I'd wondered what happened to you. It was me that shipped you the lower control arms for your elky. I don't need the replacements so save some shipping $$. Maybe you can help someone else out with them. Now if you've got a replacement 454. ;) Dean Vandergriff '65 ragtop '65 hardtop I owe some people some parts, but lost all records when my PC got stolen in September. Was it Darrel that sent me the control arms? I have the replacements to send back. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [Chevelle-List] Blast Cabinet nozzles
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Blast Cabinet nozzles Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Do you know if I have to have the suction running all the time from the shop-vac hooked to the dust port? You need to run the vac at all times. You're adding a lot of air to the cabinet with the gun. If you don't use the vac you tend to build up pressure force blast media dirt out around the door seals. This will make a mess in the shop you don't want to be breathing all the dust anyway. RE: [Chevelle-List] cars
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] cars Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I hate so say cars of our youth, at 36 I like to think I'm still young... here's my list: 1. 1965 Chevelle Malibu, 283, 3spd. I got this one about the time I turned 14 still have it today. Anybody else still have their first car? I ran a 327 4spd with a 9 ford rear 3.70 gears. Very strong combination. The car is currently undergoing a restification with a 454/400TH trans. 2. '68 bug. Bought this one while going to college. I drove it all week to save gas money for the Chevelle on weekends. Sold this one when I bought #3. 3. '73 Vette 350 4 spd. I bought it the weekend I turned 21. An incredible car for a single guy to own one that I wish I still had. Made several long road trips in this car. Installed gas shocks, poly bushings, bigger sway bars, sticky tires for SCCA competition. 4. Got married my wife had a '94 Renault. Fun to drive abuse when it would run. 5. Sold 4 to buy a '77 Vette w/ 350 350 TH. Had his hers Vette's for awhile. I don't know why but I never really liked this car very much. 6. Sold 5 to buy an 80 GMC 4x4 for me let my wife drive the '73 vette 7. Bought a '73 Firebird w/ 400, 400TH, 4:11 posi. We never drove this one. I was in the process of a rebuild traded it for... 8. '69 Malibu w 396 350TH. This one was freshly painted beautiful (black) but the motor was in pieces. Sold #3 #6 to buy a '95 ram extended cab. Wonderful truck should have kept it. 11. Sold #9 bought the '65 ragtop which is now my daily driver with 454 400TH. 12. My wife traded the Ram for a '95 Grand Cherokee which she drives everyday which has been a very reliable, low maintenance vehicle. 13. We're in the middle of building a house so I bought a work truck. I own the nastiest, rustiest, 3/4 ton '75 Chevy 4x4 that anybody's ever seen. With 350 4 spd a 4 lift it goes everywhere hauls everything. 14. Our oldest girl jut turned 16 (thankfully she doesn't like my Malibus) we're going to have to do some shopping. RE: [Chevelle-List] Steering Boxes
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Darrell, Check out powersteering.com From what I've heard, they make a great fast ratio box with the older style hose fittings for around $220. Their shop is about an hour away from me I keep putting off making this swap. My box drips around the pitman shaft seal too. RE: [Chevelle-List] 67 Radiator
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Dale, If it's any help, I run a long water pump with a Y/O 4-row radiator in my '65 ragtop w/454. Regards, Dean Vandergriff Can someone with a 67 BB Chevelle measure the thickness of the radiator itself and the tank. My 67 is an original BB car but had a SB when I bought it years ago and I'm not sure about the radiator. I'd like to put an aluminum one in it but don't know if I have enough room due to the long water pump. Anyone with a Be Cool or Griffin in a 67, I'd appreciate the thickness of that too. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
