Re: [Chevelle-list] serpentine

2006-02-06 Thread Gene Smith
HI,
I am also setting up a serp set up from a 2001 vortec blazer along with the
air conditioning parts on my 69. I went with a early style reverse pump in
aluminum because of hose issues, (it came without holes so since my radiator
has a fitting I will run the heater return to it and the heater supply still
comes out the intake.) Using the earlier pump would allow the use of
aftermarket underdrive pulleys. I am using the factory pulleys on mine but
the water pump pulley has a different bolt pattern so if you get the whole
set up and don't use the original water pump you will need to get an earlier
pulley.

The alt bracket is made to bolt to vortec heads so all three bolts will
line up if you use vortec heads. On my vette alum heads only one will line
up. I plan on using a thick piece of aluminum strap and bolt it to the head
and there is an unused threaded hole in the back of the bracket which will
line up.

I am running center bolt heads and stock covers so it cleared but it would
be tight if you use tall covers.

Use a rotating thermostat housing and shoot it behind the air cond pump,
the old hose will almost work if turned end for end and cut and spliced to
be a little longer. I am planning on using the flex stainless steel type
that street rods use alot. The bottom hose is the blazer hose.

Power steering pump was easy, return line clamps and for the pressure side I
used the blazer hose after having the local welding shop replace the
steering box end to a flare fitting.

You could use the stock clutch fan for the blazer but I am going electric.
The fire wall box will need a spacer if you use the air conditioning core,
but the lines are long enough. The condenser is about the same size as
stock, but the lines go in core support in a different (better actually)
spot and will need holes to be drilled, it seems like I had to remove the
bracket that holds the lines together and spread them a bit and make a new
hold down bracket.

I think I am at about $650 for mine so far but that includes the air cond
parts and new alum water pump. I got the stock set up from a place on eBay,

I'll second that, I love my 3.8 1996 Olds 88. Roomy and
great gas mileage and they can be bought pretty cheap. I bought mine for $1200

Someone asked a similar question a few weeks ago at
Chevelle Tech.    Favorable reviews were given to any of the
full size GM FWD equipped with the 3.8l V-6.   Seems like they are
reliable & get outstanding gas economy.  A co-worker has a
Buick  and claims 28-32 mpg on the highway.  Trunk is huge.

anybody knows of a garage available on Long Island, please let me know.
Also, any suggestions for the next commuter car are welcome, but I do want
something that hides the stuff in the back. One bad thing about the El

away, and still expect it to be there when I get back. Then there was the

Anyway, I am going to eventually

That's why I wondered if it was shill bidding because it seems
like if someone was serious with over $900,000 bid on eBay they would
have gone to russo to buy...it also doesn't make sense that they sold it without
a reserve at the auction.

I think the owners blew it. They had bids on eBay
for over $900k, but they said right in the ad that if it didn't meet their "7
figure" reserve, they would sell the car at Russo & Steele. I would have
taken the $900k and ran to the bank. I'll bet somebody is pretty pissed

Re: [Chevelle-list] Opinions needed - new panels or patches

2006-01-17 Thread Gene Smith
Hi,

Definitely go with new panels, it is the only way to get all the rust,
while the quarters are off you have the opportunity to coat all the sub
structure too. While new sheet metal seems expensive, it does save time
which is also money, and the finished product is as nice or nicer than
original. Goodmark has some new import quarters out for the 70 - 72's that
are a good bit cheaper than the USA versions.

Re: [Chevelle-list] what year is yours?

2005-12-29 Thread Gene Smith

Hi,
I have many Chevelles,  most of which
are in the raw material stage. In order of year I have

66 Malibu with ss emblems which were put on long
enough ago to make the car a fake super sport
67 SS car, a true 138 car my dad bought in 69,
will be my next project and will be a six speed fuel injected big
block
67 Malibu I bought from a guy whose house burnt
down, will always be an emblemless car w/ a small block, I plan on mini tubbing
it. I drove it for a few years with a 383 in it. It was a fast beater type of
car.
67 Malibu hard top which will probably become a
convertible since I have what is left from a 67 conv. car to change one over.
That is if I don't make the 66 a clone ss convertible, seeing as how I have had
two actual 66 138 converts slip thru my fingers in years past
69 Malibu, my current project car which will be
set up as a driver, with air and power windows, doors, trunk, etc. All handles,
locks, marker lights and emblems will be shaved. It has a long
rod 383 and turbo 350 which I want to add a gear vendors overdrive to
someday.
A 70 six cylinder car that I want to build as a
phantom 70 heavy Chevy. It will be a 400 small block, 4 speed car built as if GM
had built a road runner type chevelle, i.e. no options, rubber floor mat,
radio delete, manual brakes, etc with a small block.
A second 70 which will probably end up being a
parts car to the heavy Chevy phantom.

The non Chevelles I own include but are
not limited to a 55 Chevy truck with a heavy chop, 35 Chevy 5 window coupe, 73
Plymouth duster (how the hell did that get in there!?! ) 55 210 car, 84 s-15
converted to v-8 power, a 78 w/80 front end 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive, 79 sunbird
Pontiac that either needs a turbo added to the iron duke or a small block
transplant and three different Olds 88/98 derivatives that serve as  daily
driver status.

That is why I started the reproduction
retail business, to build some of these cars as promotional vehicles and to be
able to get parts for them cheap, as well as use them as tax write
offs!

2005-12-12 Thread Gene Smith

HI,
Goodmark had some tooling issues when first released, so
they stopped selling them until the dies were reworked. It took about a year to
get right, but that is the most impressive thing about them, they don't sell
stuff unless it is as good as possible. The 66 cowl hood is also licensed thru
GM and has to meet their fit standards. I have sold a few of them since the
re-release and have not had any complaints.

Eaton units are better than the Auburns but that is my opinion
only.  Besies, Eaton units are rebuildalble, Auburns are not.  Will
a beefed up 8.2" rear be as strong as a stock 12 bolt, doubtful.  I;ve
destroyed 10 bolt rears behind mildly built small blocks, I haven't blown up
the 12 bolt in my 70 yet that rests behind a 500 HP 454.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Ring and Pinion Auburn vs. Eaton

2005-12-04 Thread Gene Smith

Hi, While on the subject of rear axles, which is
better, the Auburn cone style posi or the Eaton clutch style? I am beginning to
lean toward the Auburn unit.

I know the 8.2 10 bolt is not the best, but will a
beefed version be at least as good as a stock 12 bolt? I am planning on going
with all new innards with 3.08's and aftermarket c-clip axles and a girdle type
rear cover. I'm still going to have about $1,200 in it. The 3.08 are temporary
as I am saving toward a Gear Vendor unit in about two years from now, then I
will go with something in the 3:42 - 3:90ish Range.

It also stands to reason that the 8.2 would allow for
less parasitic power loss and be quicker and return better gas mileage due to
the lighter weight of the internals. But since the ring gear is smaller in
diameter, the pinion would have less leverage so theoretically it would probably
equal out...or only be marginally better?

Is anyone out there running an 8.5 10 bolt?

Thanks,Gene,

A built 4L80 auto can easily handle well over a
1,000hp. One of those or a Gear Vendors would work fine.
Gearing becomes less critical the more hp &

Re: [Chevelle-list] Ring and Pinion

2005-11-30 Thread Gene Smith

Hi,
I will be honest and say that while 3.73 are a good
compromise in a vehicle that won't see much more than 50 MPH cruising, they
totally suck on the highway, especially now that the speeds are about 80 MPH. I
have run them in both a 67 Malibu and my 350 powered S-15 and for the country
type roads I drive on they are fun and 60 mph is not too obnoxious, but try
driving fast on the highway and it just gets tiring.

I am buying the stuff to rebuild my 69's rear end and I
am putting 3.08 which will still be about 2600 at 80. When money allows the Gear
Vendors unit to be bought, then I will go with 3.73 for a top gear of 2.79 and
an 80 cruise rpm of about 2400. While having a 400 horse 383 my goal is 18-22
MPG once I get the overdrive hanging on the back of the turbo 350. I plan on
driving some long distance trips with this car.

I know that gear ratio has been a topic a lot
lately but I am going to purchase my new set this week.  I noticed that
some people are running 3:73's and was wondering how they liked them as an
all around gear.  I noticed that Clint had mentioned that 3:73's were a
marginal gear for the highway.  I guess what I was wondering was would
a numerically lower gear set be a better route for a cruizer?  I would
still like a little snap at times but I also dont want to be running 4500rpm
down the highway.  I know there are formulas out there but was wanting
personal opinions from people that have cruizers.  Let me know what you
think.
Glad I bought a bunch of parts this week
becuase it is snowing right now and I can hide in the garage!

  Hi Ryan,

Even more important than the gear ratio is engine RPM at a given
speed.  60 MPH is popular because it is also Revolutions Per Mile.

My 1965 Malibu SS with 14" wheels, Powerglide and 3.31:1 gears (it's
an A/C car) turns about 3000 RPM at 60 MPH.  Much more desirable for use
on the highway would be 1800 to 2200 RPM at 60.

Hi,
My daily driver is a 96 Olds 88 which I bought with ''bad head gaskets''
but turned out to be a deteriorated plastic upper intake where coolant went
thru it to cool the egr vapors. After talking to my mechanic buddies I found
out the orange will attack plastic and gaskets alike and the only thing they
put back in cars they do is the green stuff.

I've used those before.  The two things that
seem to help more is lithium grease and more support.  I buy the lithium
grease in a can, and used to use it on all of my VW's cables, works well on
any cable.  Also, try to secure the cable in as many points as possible
with those small tube/wire loops (not sure of the real name).  The play
in the cable is usually what causes the binds and hard use.

I've

the choke on and much harder to push it to turn it off. Today I resorted to
opening the hood and shutting it off at the carb. I have one of those "Help"
(Motormite) cables. Are there better ones out there? I plan to take this one
off and lube it if nothing else. Hopefully I can either get it to work more
smoothly or get a better one. It’s becoming more of an issue now that it’s
getting colder outside. Any
recommendations?

Hi,
The 300 style bezel is what you need, it frames the lens
and doesn't have the tabs for the horizontal strips. I plan on doing the same
when I do my 67 Malibu. Watch eBay, that's where I found mine.

Hi,
The anchor point was not installed until 67 along with
other safety items such as the collapsible steering column and dual reservoir
master cylinder. Hard to believe it took over 30 years to come up with the dual
reservoir!

Thanks, I will. Maybe in 66, they didn't have an
anchoring point on the roof, and only had lap belts? I honestly can't remember
what my 66 has, and since it's out getting painted, I can't
check.

Honestly,I can't answer that question,Larry.
You might email Morris Classic and see what they say. They're very good
about answering email promptly.

  Pelle,

I searched a long time for a set of retractable
3-point seat belts for my '71 El Camino and these were the best deal I
could find.  I ordered a set and they looked great.
Unfortunately, they would not fit my El Camino because of my power
seat switch.  They would not clear the switch and the door.
The company was great about it.  They let me return the belts and
refunded my money.  I found what looked like the same belt at
several sources, but these folks were cheaper by anywhere from $20.00
to $130.00.  Check them out.  There is a good photo of them
  installed in a Chevelle.

Pelle, I just tried something different with good
results. I'm restoring a 64 Impala SS for a local guy. He asked why not use
bedliner on the floor pans. We did and it turned out excellent. It can be
sprayed, rolled or brushed. It's very tough and seals the metal. Might be
  worth a look.

Re: [Chevelle-list] First Chevelle Memory

2005-10-11 Thread Gene Smith

My first Chevelle was when I was 4 in 1969. Dad bought my
uncle's ss 67 chevelle. Uncle Doug had just got it and was drafted to 'nam. It
was red with black interior and 4-speed. Man I still remember how it felt
when dad would rip through the gears.

Interestingly enough dad had a friend that had a
66 GTO. Blue and a three speed I believe. I remember riding in it to go
fishing, no car seats then, I remember standing up in the back seat area holding
on to the back of the front seat!!

Then my uncle Mike had a 66 SS Chevelle. It was an
orange/white interior 4 speed car.

Out of the three cars, Dad's is the sole survivor, although a
basket case I have the parts to rebuild it and hope to in the near future. I
want to do it with  a six speed and fuel injection on a big block. Thought
about a 496 but will probably consider staying with a 396 and add nitrous for
the other couple of hundred on demand horses and get some mileage while on the
freeway.

The Goat bought it in a parking lot of all places, an
old lady ran into it and panicked and instead of hitting the brakes she stayed
on the gas.
That was mid 70's

Uncle Mike sold his years ago but found it
sitting in a field about ten years ago. It may have been put back together but I
really doubt it. It is probably still rusting into the
ground.

It is true when they say your basic personality is formed in
the fist few years of life, I also remember my dad having a 54 Chevy with a 49
olds engine, my uncles having an MG, and when uncle Doug returned he bought a
70-ish Camaro but didn't keep it long. I don't remember if it was anything
special. Then my uncle Larry had a 69-ish 442 convertible until it was
repossessed. I remember that was the early 70's, maybe 72-73 and things were
tight with my family and they had come to stay with us and when the repo man
came I tried to bargain with food stamps. That car was cool! Yellow with black
interior. He late had a Gold Duster Plymouth.

I was thinking back to the first time I remember
seeing a Chevelle. The year was 1967. I had an older Cousin who had recently
bought a GTO. I don't know what he had under the hood, I was 9 at the
time. All I remember is that it was a light shade of blue, and had a
stick. He had a friend that came over and had a 67 Chevelle, that was a
light shade of green, had a stick, and sounded like thunder. I remember
looking at the 2 cars side by side seeing how they looked
similar, yet different. I also remember there being a challenge and them
marking off a quarter mile(will lived out in the sticks). The Chevelle
  won.

$2600 isn't too bad if there is a lot of excavating to be
done, which you could maybe rent the equipment and dig yourself. But for
$2600 I would also want a stand up shower installed at the same
time. Saves alot of tracking thru the house which your wife will
appreciate!

$2600 otherwise spent would get me a  4-post lift or

Hi All,
I am working on a 69 that came with 68 doors when I bought it and have
since replaced them with 69's so the 68 doors are just taking up space. They
are pretty solid but will take some work, I would rate them at about an 8.5
out of 10 and would sell them for $250 for the pair or $150 each. Shipping
would be extra. They are complete with non tinted glass and vent windows but
the regulators are shot.

  Question - 66/67 Chevelle

On a 66/67 Chevelle - on the back corners of the
roof line, where the roof comes down to the read deck lid, there is a
rectangular piece of sheetmetal. This piece would be flanked on the left and
right by the roof line coming down, the rear window glass is above it and the
truck lid is just below it.

Now that you know what I'm talking about (I
hope), can you guys familiar with this area please tell me on an original 66
or 67, is there a seam at the left and right edge where this panel meets the
  roof line?

In mine, which is in primer, I can see the seam
at both ends, but it's filled with Bondo. Last time I went to Old Town in
Kissimmee and looked closely, both restored 66's did not have a seam there. It
was totally covered with Bondo and painted over. Which is
correct?

  Thanks,
