Re: [Chevelle-List] Super Chevy magazine
Jim..that's odd , I got the same type of notice from them . I ordered the magazine this year and got my first 2 issues the Feb & Mar 2002 magazines.. then I got an invoice ( they already had cashed my check in Jan) I e-mailed them from their web site to let them know that my Apr issue had not arrived but had been on the newsstands for quite some time, and to ask if it was common policy for them to send out subscription re-newals after only 2 issues of a 12 month subscription, they answered back in 2 days to say that the Apr. issued would be re-mailed but said nothing about the invoice. I have since received my Apr. & May issues and will wait to see if they invoice me again. "To avoid this, mail your payment and the invoice in the enclosed reply envelope. We will mark your account "Paid in Full" and send your next issue." (all bold type was underlined on my letter) Sounds pretty threatening, doesn't it? Sounds like the kind of statement I'd get for a past due bill, eh? According the the last invoice I got, and according to mky checkbook, this subscription expires in June of 2002. Am I missing something - I don't get my next issue (April) unless I pay them now for another year? And May and June, which I have also already paid for? I think my response to them will be, "You are right. Don't send my next issue. Or any more. In fact, I am immediately cancelling my subscription. Please send a refund for the last 3 issues!." Too bad - I like Super Chevy magazine. But Chevy High Performance isn't too bad either. Maybe they are a little more honest in their billings. I didn't renew Hot Rod because of the smart aleck attitudes the editors have towards any subscribers who send them a letter suggesting a change. Now Super Chevy is also down the tubes as far as I am concerned. Don't these outfits have any ethics any more? Maybe it's time to start reading National Geographic again!!! Re: [Chevelle-List] 1964 Chevelle 2dr. Sedan
Donnie...I think that that price is way too high, your pal metioned how much he has wanted one, and been looking for 10 years , did the seller get wind of this ?? I know I looked for a long time for my car and wound up paying about $2,000 - $4,000 more than I believed it was worth .but I was willing to do that to get a specific year and model that had special meaning for me, not to mention the availability of the car was scarce.the only way I could see your pal paying this price is if the car has some very special signifigance and even then I think he could get it for less. I am going to put in a new exhaust system from the collectors back and was wondering what the list members recommend,I sort have been leaning toward the flowmaster system because of the number of people that have gone that way , it would be the 3 chamber if I go that route. But I wondered about the other systems out there and their positives and negatives, Flowtech,Borla etc. and any others that might be available here in Canada. Took the Q-Jet off and took in to have cleaned and rebuilt and noticed that the rod that goes from the choke coiled spring on the manifold to the carb was off and laying on top of the engine. Looked in the Service manual and can't see a clear picture of where exactly this rod attaches to the side of the carb. There are two possibilities. I have posted pictures of the choke here http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/carb1.jpg http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/carb2.jpg Also the pictures of this coiled choke spring look different in the book and I am wondering if I have the stock choke coil and carb? Re: [Chevelle-List] Holley vs. Edelbrock
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Well ...when I heard the Q-jet was a bolt on and go carb I was very sceptical ..consider me a staunch fan now , I just bolted on an Edlebrock Q-jet Performer carb to the 396 and it started on the 3 rd crank ..and was at the correct idle once warm. All I needed to do was plug a couple of vacuum fittings ,and the power break hole at the back of the carb with a 1/4 " NPT plug and she was set. I need to check the kick down , but I have to think that it will be dang near dead on considering the success so far we have alot of salt on the roads right now so I have to be content with the car on the driveway for now . Edlebrock Q-jets replacement carbs like the one I just got are built by Weber USA according to the packaging it came with...The Performer series carbs for Q-jet spread bore application are all Weber design . These are not as easy to tune or as flexible in my opinion. Everyone will feel different about this of course. Re: [Chevelle-List] Build Sheet
if you read further the info sheet also states that GM Canada may have information on US built cars sold in Canada ie they have info on the COPO 427 Cameros that were built in Baltimore but sold in Canada. The whole point is that you can't go wrong phoning the toll free number cause they will not charge you if they have no info. I believe that GM Canada would have kept the records and spec sheets for some of the cars they imported up from the US for sale here , it then becomes a matter of which cars they kept records for...I mean you don't think that the US shipped cars here in the 60's without any sort of build sheet info , options etc going along with the car, and that GM Canada just put these cars on the lot without knowing anything about them do you? It just stands to reason that GM Canada kept documentation on the vehicles they shipped to dealers including some that were imported from the US before distribution to various Canadian dealerships. I don't know this for a fact but it seems reasonable givin that they kept records of cars they made here . [Chevelle-List] Just thought of something
Now that I had a look at the engine on Dales' 67 Chevelle ( a beauty ) I am thinking the front facing port is actually for the by-pass and the pass side port on top uses a 90 deg fitting and is for the heater hose...I am not stupid...much... just veryy slow on the uptake ..that's why I bought a Big Block. [Chevelle-List] Water pump by-pass
Guys I just got a new Edelbrock intake manifold for Christmas and now that I have done the first over comparison of it to the stock intake on the BB I am a bit puzzled as to this straight bolt on replacement terminology they use .:) I know we had a string on the water pump by-pass hose a little while ago but I have a couple of questions . The Edelbrock does not seem to have a provision for the by-pass hose ..I see the temp sending unit port and the thermostat port on the top of the manifold ...now what is the port on the pass side front for(front left facing engine) ...another sending unit of some kind or is this supposed to be used to run a by-pass ( doesn't seem practical to have it on top of the manifold unless there is some kind of 90 deg fitting). Have any of you that have swapped the stock intake for the Edelbrock got any tips for me before I get at it? Also .I am looking at replacing the old Q-jet with one of the new Edelbrock Q-jet ..I want something shiny and new :) , nay comments on this carb or the combo of the performer intake and this carb along with a new Edelbrock water pump ( this would probably solve my by-pass problem)??? Re: [Chevelle-List] restoration guides..
Tom ...this book tells you what the original stock appearance should be for the car according to year (correct colours, parts etc) ...it is more for a concourse type show car , it is not a how to retsore your car the by the numbers books will give you the part id numbers for drive trains , engines, interoir codes etc..it also is not a how to book.if you want a how to book look elsewhere. I have Herds book and I find it interesting to go through but I have not really used it much since I am not going for a correct numbers matching type of autothe info I got out of how to restore your collector car by tom brownell was much more informative for me.. Re: [Chevelle-List] Mig Welders
What voltage will you run you can get 110V units that run up to 140 amps or you can go to over 250 amps if you can wire into 220Miller makes good home based units ( Hobart is a brand name made by them as well)..many of these are set up to use shielding gas or flux core ..although gasless flux core welders are cheaper . Also while more expensive I am totally sold on the electronic helmut ...the lazy mans welding helmut :) These machines come in many set ups for amperagethe more expensive the more settings you have to weld at , most will weld 22 gauge sheet metal and the maximum thickness is limited by the amperage of the unit. As for prices in Canada they sell for about $500 for a 110V gasless mig...$750 for a gas/gasless unit and the sky is the limit for 220 V systems. Your looking at about $1000.00 for a gas/gasless 110V 30-140 amp welder , with a 4 hour argon/co2 bottle , wire coil , Helmut and gloves. That's here in Canada ..State side I am not familiar with pricing. Mel 67 Malibu SS Does anyone weld and have information on mig welders. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Well Beck here is the deal as I see itYou have a Canadian made Malibu SS with a 230 6-cyl. A car readily available in Canada at the time.not uncommon at all. The fact that they were marketed as a Chevelle SS doesn't really mean much , as your GM Canada documentation shows it was a Malibu SS ..just like mine. These Malibu SS cars that were made in 66 and 67 came equipped with anywhere from a 6cyl to a BB 396, and all were sold as Malibu SS's..the only Chevelle SS396 available in 66 was imported to Canada not built here.Things didn't change until late 67 when the imported SS396 became more available at a reasonable price and the end of the Malibu SS was written . Yours is a Canadian car built for export, it is a Malibu SS, what nordic GM called it does not change what it was built as here .the only unique qualities the car has over our domestic Malibu SS is the options installed for export ...that is what makes it different and the fact that someone has put the wrong script on your rear quarter :) Mel 67 Malibu SS > Re Beck > PS: For what I have seen in forms of Canadian > documents the SS396 was avalible in Canada in 66. > However as I said before - GM nordic sold SS models > based on the Malibu but sold as SS not Malibu SS. .net - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Kurt There are many 66 and 67 SS cars without the BB . all of them built in Oshawa for the Canadian and export market .Tariffs on the 66 SS396 Chevelle were so high they were not sold in Canada and only got to our market in late 67. I own a 67 Malibu Super Sport document by GM Canada ... that came as a 283/194 but has since had a BB dropped in it. As for the quarter scripts on Beck's Car the Malibu SS script on the right quarter is correct ..however the Malibu script on the left quarter is not , those are not the kind of production errors that slip out to my knowledge. It appears to me that the script has been replaced for whatever reason and the correct one was not used. [Chevelle-List] 67 Chevelle
I have recently managed to purchase the car I have been wanting for many years ...a 67 Chevelle Malibu SS. I know they didn't make em in 67, but they did in Canada and I got one!!!. Anyway the car has had some work completed on it already and I have just noticed that the rear quarter Malibu SS badges are different colours on either side . The original quarter has a white SS in the script and the replacement has a red SS in the script. Do any of the Canadian Chevelle experts know which script came with the car ?? it is AA 9 (Tuxedo Black Enamel ) and has 750 red interior. I don't know if the interior colour dictated the colour of the scripts. I ask this more as a curiosity since the previous owner dropped a BB in it and added the hood to make it American looking , and the SS396 badges he used are white so that sort of decides which script I'll be replacing. It differs from SAE net horsepower in that many of the accessories (such as alternator, water pump, etc.) are not attached. Engines before 1973 were primarily measured with these "gross" numbers. Since 1973, "net" figures were published. This confusion caused many people to suppose that their engine had been seriously de-tuned when they saw that the same engine in 1972 had 400 hp but in 1973 had only 235 hp. (This example is from the Cadillac 500 cubic inch engine). Compare SAE net horsepower. Also see brake horsepower and horsepower. SAE net horsepower: The brake power (power available at the flywheel or output shaft -- usually the crankshaft) of a fully equipped engine fitted with all the accessories necessary to perform its intended functions unaided. In 1973, automobile manufacturers began publishing their engine specifications in "net" horsepower and "net" torque instead of "gross" figures. In many cases the published numbers were significantly lower in 1973 than in 1972. Some of the decrease was attributed to the addition of pollution equipment, the lowering of compression, and the use of regular unleaded gasoline instead of premium leaded fuel. However most of the decrease in number was a switch to "net" figures. Compare SAE gross horsepower. Re: [Chevelle-List] 66 Malibu SS info
Nice looking car Dave ..thanks for the info from everyone . Dave while you were restoring the 66 Malibu SS did you come across any info that idicated that it was possible to order the SS 396 grill and rear cove that came with the SS 396 badges on it ( or were they only available as unmarked stock Malibu grill and cove that are on your car ) and was the domed hood available as well or were they only put on the Chevelle SS cars in trhe US... I know that you could get the 396 engine option , what I don't know is if you could get the trim package that the Chevelle SS in the States came with. Here is the info I have been able to obtain .please anyone correct the errors you see !!! In the US in 1966 the Chevelle SS became a big block only car ( and in fact a separate Chevelle model all together ) however In Canada in 66 the tariffs were so high on the US made Chevelle cars that GM Canada still offered the Malibu as a SS car that could be ordered with a variety of engines from small block right up to the 396. These cars carried scripting on the rear quarters that read Malibu SS ( SS circled ) .. NOT "supersport" as in the US They came with a stock hood ( no domes ) They came with stock grills and rear coves ( no SS badges on them ) They came with chromed rocker panels but did not include the strip from the rear wheel to rear bumper ( stock Malibu ) So what I want to find out is... Because the Canadian made Malibu SS came with so many options as far as motor etc.were the above listed trim items that came on the US made Chevelle SS's made available as options on the Canadian made Malibu SS as well ?
