RE: [Chevelle-List] 6 cyl. motors

2002-05-13 Thread Robert B. King

In the early seventies, I used to watch this 67 deuce at the drag strip. He
was running H/MP (modified production) at the time. The car was a little 2
door sedan with a 292 truck six, trips on a tunnel ram, cam, headers and
some compression. It sounded a little bit odd after hearing tons of open
header big-block cars, but the damn thing always made the trip down the
quarter in the very low twelve second range with the front wheels of the
ground in two gears. I saw him run an 11.97 once. The car was
appropriately named Preparation H.

This sounds like a perfect project to put a turbocharger / mini-blower on!
I think a turbocharger for a automatic car, and maybe a blower for a stick
shift. Another fun idea would be to go with three Weber side drafts. You
know that with a IR (Independent Runner) manifold that the throttle response
is supposed to be fantastic. I know this seems hard to believe but, this
combo is known for its good low to mid-range torque. Three two barrels
would look VERY cool, and I think with a I-6 it solves a difficult
manifolding problem. See lots of people want to slap on that Holley four
barrel, like the V8 guys. The old single four barrel works great on a V6,
or a V8, but the distance between the cylinders is much different on a I-6.
If you try to run a single carb, it is a long distance to cylinders one and
six, and a very short distance to cylinders three and four. The answer is
multiple carbs, a warmed up rod cam, and some ten to one pistons!

RE: [Chevelle-List] Getting ready to order interior kit

2002-01-10 Thread Robert B. King

To address your questions on:

1) Weather stripping
The rubber on the quarter glass is indeed a nasty little devil to deal with.
Fill a small squirt bottle with a mixture of dish washing detergent and
water. Don't be afraid to use a lot of soap. Roll the window down enough
to expose the top of the channel and squirt to soapy water into it. It will
most likely take some time to wick its way through the length of the
channel, so you will have to re-apply the mixture often. Once the soap
mixture has saturated the channel, try to slide the old seal down the
channel. Above all be patient. These seals are not glued from the factory,
but are pretty tight to begin with and the metal reinforcement inside may
have rusted making them even tighter. If the soap mixture does not work,
silicone spray might help.

To install the new seals, first make sure that the channel is clean and rust
free. Then lube the channel and the seal with straight dish soap and slide
the seal up from the bottom. Use as much mixture as necessary to keep the
joint wet and slippery. Don't worry if it seems too slippery. When the
area dries the rubber will have adequate friction to stray in place against
the metal channel. Don't use silicone spray to install the new seals
because it stays slick for a very long time.

Have plenty of towels on hand. This process is a little messy!

2) Tires
I have run Goodrich T/A tires on several vehicles and have never been
disappointed. I got good wear and excellent handling every time.

Hope this helps,
Bob

I am about ready to order the entire interior kit for my Chevelle along
with all the weather stripping. Anyone have any tips they can pass along on
these repairs? The weather stripping that is along the chrome strip that
divides the front window from the rear window looks a little intimidating.

Also went looking at tires and wheels today and the local tire shop
recommends a 60's series on the rear and a 70's on the front and showed me
two tires, a Kelly Charger and Goodrich TA radial tire. What tires have
you used that have measured up to your expectations for how they look and
perform?

Thanks,

I have done some touch up and refinish on dash and interior trim parts using
model railroad paints. Visit a hobby store that specializes in model
railroad supplies and ask about Floquil brand. They have a color called
Engine Black that is a pretty good match for interior trim. The really nice
feature of this paint is that the manufacturer uses 'scale pigments' which
are much finer so as not to obscure model details. If your are careful and
take your time the finish will look as if it was sprayed.

small craft brush and ? paint.

I had the same problem when I bought my 67. Pull the lock cylinders from
the drivers door and trunk ( pia to get at without key). Take the locks to
any Chevy dealer. The guys in the parts department have the documentation
to cut new keys from the codes. If there are no codes on the locks, you
will need a locksmith to 'reverse engineer' the codes from the tumblers.
The hardest part of this entire operation is finding the blanks with
original style heads.

How bad would it be to swap over that brand new 4.3 and overdrive tranny
into that cute little 4 door? I love the 4.3 had one in a Blazer took a

Yes
this is true. The rear, upper spring perch is straight, large diameter on
64-66 and tapered on 67. I put a 65 frame under my 67 years ago with no
problems at all. There may be a slight difference at the front center of
the cross member near the drag link. Though it may look different,
dimensionally there is no difference. If you can get that 67 frame for a
hundred bucks, go for it. I paid that much for mine 23 years

If you
are able to determine that this is a sticking lifter, here is trick that I have
used many times. Add about half of a Quart of automatic trans fluid to the
engine. Plain old Dexron is fine. ATF contains a lot of the same
detergent additives used in motor oil and will help dissolve accumulated
varnish. Drive the car up to 1500 miles and change the oil. I have
used this trick for preventive maintenance on most of the cars and trucks that
I've driven for the past 25 years with good results.

Josh,

I was also afraid and ashamed to admit that those were my first thoughts as
well. As I listened to a caller on a local radio station talk about the way
the terrorist b**tards have been behaving like rotten children for the past
thousand years and how we should turn 'em all to glass and give them a
thousand year timeout, it occurred to me just how dangerous that kind of
response could be. There are now five known, and I stress the word known,
nuclear powers in the world today, one of which is Pakistan. As you may or
may not know, Pakistan borders Afghanistan, a likely target. After growing
up in the late fifties and sixties I have a fair understanding of just what
the consequences of a nuclear strike would mean to civilization on this
planet. While I share your sentiment, I can not agree with a nuclear
solution to this problem.

first things that came out of my mouth when I heard the news report on the

belief, if a country is going to do nothing but cause terrorism and grief

[Chevelle-List] Venting

2001-09-13 Thread Robert B. King

To
all,
I will
apologize in advance for my rantings.

Under
normal circumstances, a diplomatic approach to international problems would be
preferable to military action. But, these arenot a normal
circumstances and is most definitely no ordinary events. The rules have
changed and the time has come for the people of this great country to demand a
response. Congress must step up to the plate declare a formal state of war
on any and all that allow, encourage and perform such despicable acts. We,
the American people need to be assured that these events will not go
unanswered. We need to let the rest of the world know that we can not and will not
allow any entity to attack our citizens or our military ever again. We
must put the terrorist communities around the world on
alert that they have pissed off the wrong country.

I
heard talk on the news channels yesterday about declarations of war with
references to Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm, etc. along with the fact that a
declaration of war has notbeen made since the attack on Pearl
Harbor. Wake up people, that was then. Uncounted Americans are
dead,American property has been destroyed and the sanctity of our freedom
and very way of life is being challenged like never before. These attacks
happened on American soil. Usama Bin Laden issues statements that he did
not do this. Muslim extremists and supporters of terrorism celebrate in
the streets. Others extremists taunt the U.S. stating that we "do not have
the belly" to retaliate. The Taliban government of Afghanistan backs him
up and then says; don't bomb us, innocent people will die and reminds us to
consider the consequences. Too f...ing late Bubba.

I am
in one hundred percent agreement with the notion that countries that aid and
abet terrorism should also be held accountable. The terrorists that
carried out this attack can no longer be punished by any living human being, but
their comrades and leaders need to be dealt with immediately, swiftly and
absolutely. If the execution of this plan involves military action, so be
it. The full wrath of the American people must be unleashed against our
enemies.

The
nature of terrorism is so perverse and elusive that civilized people can not
readily understand it to the degree necessary to effectively eradicate this
threat to humanity. This is an issue of generational hatred that has now
come to a head with the United States as its primary focus. I for one do
not want to live in the gun sights of an enemy with no face, courage, honor or
reason. There will be no diplomatic solutions. There will be no
negotiations. There will be no compromise. There must be
action.

This
sh.. stops, and it stops right now.

Thanks
for letting me vent.

You are right, so when we find out who did this we should gather them
all up. Fly them here, strip them of all their clothes super glue
them to a big 4 lane highway (one in each state), then have the Chevelle
cruise of all time. 1000's of Chevelles Elkys lined up at the start,
guess we could call it the Trash speed bump run. Run it till nothing

Fitting that they be crushed by big American iron that was made in

I changed an oil pump on my 67 SS with the engine still in the car. To do
it, I had to unbolt the headers, drop the trans, drain the cooling system,
and on and on. Unless you have an A/C car AND have to open the system to
get the engine out, you are miles ahead by just biting the bullet and
pulling the engine out. At least then you can do some of the work standing
up.

Josh,

I had something similar happen to me a number of years ago. It felt like it
lost fire at about 115 for just a second. I was running a points
distributor at the time, so I checked the input voltage on the positive coil
terminal. I don't remember what the voltage should be, but 3.5 volts was
way too low. I swapped in an HEI distributor and changed the power lead to
provide full voltage to the distributor and it never happened again.

BTW, This happened at two in the morning on an interstate. The blue flash
from the exhaust pipes when fire returned must have looked wild from the
rear.

Hey guys and gals, I have a new bit going on with my 66. It just started
happening in the past few months, I don't know exactly when it started but
it didn't do it last time I was where I was. What I mean (and I know I will
hear a bunch of bs about I shouldn't have been flying low in the first
place, but its not like the car wasn't built to go fast in the first place)
anyway a few days ago I was feeling froggy and I was on a good long stretch
of four lane with nobody out (I will stress this one) so I thought 'what the
heck you haven't ran her up to triple digits in awhile so why not?' so I
mashed the pedal to the floor and away I went. As soon as she hit 105 she
stuttered, almost like either 1. I wasn't getting enough gas or 2. wasn't
getting fire or 3. the valves were wanting to float (maybe the springs lost
tension? This car is good for 120). I am just curious I haven't run the
car like that in a long while as a matter of fact this was the first time
this year it broke 100, but my girlfriends Dad did do a little work to the
carb when I had that little electrical fire. So I think possibly it may
have been that the carb was tuned down a little (I am getting really good
mileage out of that booger right now) but I just wanted to see what you
gurus think about it. Thanks in advance.

The first generation MCs used the short wheelbase frame similar to the 2dr

Good call Bill. I was in the auto body trade for close to 20 years and have
had similar experiences. I especially liked PPG's epoxy primer, and used it
to 'lock down' bare metal before proceeding with a two part primer surfacer.
For any paint job where superior appearance and longevity is desired, it is
definitely worth the extra money to use good products. Experience tells me
that the finish is only as good as the preparation.

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

What I see causing most problems with primer is exposure to the elements.
People will spray primer over body work or bare metal and then leave it
for several months or years. Most primers that are meant to be sanded are
porous and water will pass right through to the steel. If the car is
allowed to sit outside, the primer can do nothing to stop rust from
forming. In fact, quite often you won't even see the rust until you
shelled out a bunch of your hard-earned money for that killer paint
job. Primer will also oxidize when it is allowed to sit for any length of
time. If the odxidized layer isn't sanded off before paint is applied,
peeling will be the result.

There are primers, such as PPG's DP series epoxy primers that seal out
moisture and have corrosion resistant qualities. This product can
actually be left uncoated for a great length of time. Sometimes I hear
people say it's too expensive. I used to paint for a living. I don't like
to do things over. If I have to spend a little more up front to prevent
myself from having to do something a second time, it was well worth it.

If you are doing a job that can't be painted any time soon, use an epoxy
primer. I recommend using an epoxy first anyway. It's good insurance. I
put it on before I use any body filler. Body filler sticks to it better
than it does to steel. Then, when you are ready for paint you can spray a
surfacer type primer over your work to finish it. I would recommend a 2
part primer over any air dry lacquer type primer. The 2 part products
fill much better than the old stuff and they are much less prone to
shrinking also.

the primer was the reason for the peeling. Do you guys have an
opinion on this? He said that it was a little while ago and they may
have fixed the problem. Any ways I've never heard of this so your
opinion is valued by this guy.

My advice is to be careful with the long water pump setup. I ran it in my
67 SS for a long time, but was never comfortable with how close the fan was
to the core. I broke a motor mount once and put the fan right into a two
month old four core rad. If I had it to do over again, I'd ditch the belt
driven fan in favor of electrics. Just my two cents worth.

The increase in displacement for a 0.030 over bore depends on the size of
the engine. Here is the formula for calculating the displacement of any
engine:

  displacement = pi * (bore / 2) * (bore / 2) * stroke * cylinders

Note: The approximate value of pi is 3.14159

Using this formula, here are the results for a few different engines.
-
283 net increase 4.399 in3
  0.030 (287.437)
  std (283.038)

350 net increase 5.269 in3
  0.030 (355.291)
  std (350.022)

396 net increase 5.824 in3
  0.030 (401.795)
  std (395.971)

502 net increase 6.764 in3
  0.030 (508.938)

I think it was Hooker that made header-sidepipes in the 70's. The primaries

Ok, I'll soon come to a decision point. I will not be able to run my

So, they will exit in front of the rear wheels. I'm actually
considering the thought of sidepipes, but don't even know where to start
looking. Any suggestions?I don't think I've ever seen a Chevelle
with sidepipes, so I can't even picture what it would really look like;
good or bad. Anyone have any 70s pictures? Or opinions on this idea?

Also, the NASCAR stock cars have long flat exhaust tips exiting in front
of the rear wheels. I realy like that idea; low profile, clean, not as
easy to see. (I know, just the opposite of the sidepipes!).
Any suggestions where I might find these?

Thanks!

It's OK to clean and reseal the bolts, but I always use new head gaskets.

Hi guys,

Can I re-use head bolts and gaskets, or do they need to be replaced
every time the head is removed?

Thanks,
Dave

Ok, it's not really complete, but I figured I'd start off with a pretty
decent version to start with. It IS missing a
bunch of pics, mostly the ones I have to go to your sites and download. I
just haven't gotten to that yet!
Anyway, try this out for now, and send me some feedback as to what I should
do to improve the NEXT
version. I can add sound if you want too, maybe offer a version with and
without?..
Right now, it's only available in a PC version, so those with a Mac...sorry!
(Kinda like having a F**D and
wanting a Chevelle?...)
Anyway, go here to download it- it's a zipped self installing file (an EXE),
scan it before you use it if you like,
it's not virus.

[Chevelle-List] Re: unsub - testing rich text theory

2001-06-29 Thread Robert B. King

I modified Outlook to deliberately post using rich text to verify Daniel's
theory. If we are right, there should not be a footer on this message.

Sorry for more junk guys.

I tested this theory and it seems to hold water. I sent a message to the
list admin to let him/her know, so I think that we can call this one a dead
horse.

It looks like the list software only adds the footer to the plain text
emails.
All the one's I've seen without a footer have been in the rich text or
HTML format.

There were numerous posts this morning without footers (at least in my
inbox). They seem to come from AOL users. Could this be a bug with AOL
or
 the list.

Could be AO Hell's problem, I never have seen one without it, but then I
really haven't looked for each one to make sure it was there either

I bought it last week. Lots of cool stuff that probably (or at least seems
like it) came out of a time capsule. It's really refreshing to see that

Just letting you know that there is a now Chevy magazine on the shelves.
Chevy Rumble just came out this month. Covers a lot of pre-Chevelle
Chevys
but has articles on small block induction, disc break conversion, an 8.1
Vortec motor, and a '69 502 Chevelle.

Might want to hit the news stand and check it out.

Yes, the 67s did have the emblem in the center of the rear panel. It looks
very similar to the grille badge.

just from the sound of it that it doesn't fit flush on the panel it may be
from something like a 68+, where the emblem fit in the middle of the panel.
Didn't the 67 model have it mounted in the middle? I'm too lazy to break
out my books and going by memory, and that might be dangerous.

In a message dated 06/18/2001 8:48:11 PM Eastern Daylight Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

  Folks,

I have been somewhat mislead by an unknowledgable ebay seller that
listed
an

SS396 emblem for a 66. I have received an SS396 emblem after winning
the
bid.

I saw the picture and it looked correct but now that I have it in
front
of
me I know it is not correct for 66.

I looked up on my parts sheet and found what I believe is the correct
part
number for a 66 SS396 rear emblem (4227376). The one I have received
from
the seller has a part number of (8752087). Can someone tell me what
this
emblem goes to? It has a slight V shape angle and would not lay flush
  against
the rear panel of a 66 chevelle. I look forward to anyone's assistance
in
   this matter.

Hi Dwaine,
I can verify that 4227376 is the correct number for 66SS SS396 rear
name plate. I have not been able to find the 8752087 in any parts books
that
I have. Good Luck.
