Re: [Chevelle-list] Timing cover pan gasket
John: I just replaced one on a 350 engine we built. I took all the pan bolts out,and it allowed the pan to drop about 1 inch to 1 1/2 in front. I then put the new gasket in and put the bolts back in starting at the front and working to the back. I had a chrome housing the had a small bend in it to the outside and caused mine to leak.Hope this helps Bob 64 SS ---Original Message--- From: The Chevelle Mailing List Date: 01/31/07 21:51:50 To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: [Chevelle-list] Timing cover pan gasket Hi guys...Does anyone have any tips on fixing a leak on the timing cover oil pan gasket on a small block???..Can the oil pan be lowered enough with the engine in the car to replace it?? Ive watched and learned from you all about gears and tire size and trannys. Ive got 3.08s and a 350 tranny with 235 70 14s. what does a 200r4 usually cost and what is needed to change it out? Im wanting the "snap" and some gas mileage when I take it to the shows. The engine is a stout 350 . Im open to all ideas. The 373's sound right , but i wonder about what it might take to do the 200r4.? thanks bob 65 SS chevelle

If doing a lot of wide open throttle blasts then you need 650 or better. All with vacuum secondaries due to automatic trans. Otherwise the 600 will most likely give you great response on street and will perform quite well. Did you put the 78 jets in the primary or the secondary? Way too big for primary. National Standards (IAMPO OR UPC ) for horizontal drain pipe is 1/4 inch per foot (2 % slope). 3 inch line or larger can be installed @ 1/8 inch per foot( 1% slope) if the Authority Having Jurisdiction first gives approval. 8 inch line and above can be embedded @ 1/16 inch per foot. Even if you do not get a permit at least install it to code. One day you may want to sell the property and may find out a home inspection turns up illegal work. Larry (Z) Certified Plumbing Inspector

Hay larry: ive just build a family dollar store and a 5 unit mini shopping center. ive plumbed all of my rent houses using a water line source called peks. it is a flexable plastic type pipe that wont burst when frozen. the only problem, is finding a guy the has the tool too crimp the connectors on. you can buy it at the hardware store and install it underground before you pour your slab,as well as your drain pipes. just remember, drop in the drain pipe should be one inch in 10 feet for most "city codes". glad i could give some help back to the LIST .everyone has been so helpfull to me!! Would I still like to have my L-79 SS from 1965? Of course I would but it's long gone to the crusher. Sold it in 74 after the Army & during my first marriage. Had no place to keep it anyway & the last thing on my mind was owning a 40 year old car in 2005. Aftermarket was the way back then. Either performance or looks, and most of the time you sold what you took off. Never occurred to us to save for numbers matching in the future. The number of people that are original owners of these muscle machines are few & far between. I wish my Mom had a house & garage where I could have stored mine for 30 years. Even as a rustbucket it would have been worth a fortune today as an oringinal L-79. You don't even want to know about the 58-59 Baseball card collection I sold for $10. Bought a tank of gas & went out on a date. Today I own my 4th 65 SS and every time I drive it, it makes me smile. No numbers matching anything but some of the sheetmetal. No muncie shifter and no chalk marks anywhere. Close the hood & it looks like the 60's. A lot of shine and custom wheels. Not much stock under the hood either and the flowmasters are like music. Nothing stuffy about me or my car and people let me know they approve all the time. I admire and respect the stockers and the people that build them and if I did have that first 65, I'm afraid it would have to be a trailer queen today. Personally, I want to drive, have fun and leave the numbers to the purists. Let them worry about the right screws, bolts, and chalk marks. If it's your car you do whatever makes you smile whether that's going for 1000 points, pro street or in between!! And NEVER condemn those that don't share your views. To each his own. I have no idea what happened to the original parts. That was muscle car era hotrodding. Hotrodding 32 Fords was a whole other thing but with muscle cars it was all about exhaust, cams, wheels, carbs and once in a while some serious dude would port the heads - and with cast iron, that was no mean potatoes - or stroke & bore. Only the south end greasers did that stuff...not us north end frat boys - and they cleaned our clocks at the local 1/4 every Saturday night. For years, I didn't even know how to tell if the block matched the chassis - I didn't know or think it was important. When I got my Chevelle years ago, as soon as I had the money, off came the heads and on went aluminum...and a cam and carb and wheels with some swingin' KDW tires. Oh yeah, and headers and xpipe and Flowmasters and lower springs and a Mallory and the A/C is out in the shed. Now it's MY car. It sounds, looks, and drives like the nasty old girl she is. It ain

thanks for the help Gene.bob ---Original Message--- From: The Chevelle Mailing List Date: 06/04/05 10:51:58 To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] carter AFB Hi, The AFB is easier to tune with metering rods and or springs that take about 30 seconds to remove with out taking the carb apart. And if you do have to change jets the top comes off and the fuel stays in the bowls which is a lot less messy. And you don't have to worry about leaks. I think the secondary side is more responsive too. They don't run a power valve either so you won't have to worry about it blowing out. I'm sure that there are venders who specialize in date coded blocks. You probably need to do a web search to find some. Tromping around swap meets you may also stumble acrossed the correct block. Also are you a member of ACES? Every issue there are classified ads in the back and I frequently see listings for dated blocks. If you have time, I'd try the swap meet route first, if for nothing more than to save some cash. Seems like you would have the patience (36 years worth) to look around. [Chevelle-list] a friend wants info
I know this is a little off the list, but a good friend needs some help. He is wanting to build a 34 chevy coupe, and needs the wood interior frame work . He thinks that there is a company out there that is making it out of metal now. Anyone have any idea where he could find such a thing?? He is an old drag racier from the early 50's and want to build this car he has had since he was a kid. He has helped me with questions and had most of the answers when i needed them instead of taking up space here (about engines) Thanks for the help in advance.
