(baby boomer generation) may not see a future classic in any of the

all.  The most you saw in your local paper was a paragraph or so on Friday.
The Big Boys had to go coast to coast to make a buck.  Mostly show money &
match racing.  Here in the DC/MD area we had 75 & 80 Dragaway, Capitol Raceway
Park, & Aquasco Sppeedway.  For a road trip we'd go to York US 30
Dragway.  From 63-68 I spent most of my weekends at one of those & from 65-67
racing my A/FS L-79 SS.  Got drafted in December 68.  Funny how reflexes change

Anyway, the glue is another story. With any kind of contact cement it's
important to spray both sides and let it dry a few minutes until it's tacky
rather than wet (the Super 77 can says to bond when it is "aggressively
tacky"). Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away, keep it moving and don't spray too
much. If your headliner material is porous it can ooze out the other side and
it is hard to get off.

Maybe it's a symptom of the fact that I park outdoors in all kinds of weather,
but mine fall down at least once a year, meaning that the material separates
from the bo ards. I have tried 3M Headliner Adhesive as well as Super 77. Maybe
some day I'll just buy the pre-done ones and get it over with.

Re: [Chevelle-list] ever thought of trading your Chevelle?

2008-10-05 Thread plgchevelle65
I'm sure alot of us have days like that.? Sometimes when?my 65 isn't running
right or I just don't feel like cleaning it or messing with it I think about
selling it & moving on.? But on a cruise, at a show, or a cruise-in, behind the
wheel or hanging with all the great car people I've come to know, I realize why
I've invested all the time & $$$ in this old heap of metal that I LOVE so
much!!!? When the time is right for you to make a change you'll do it and go
forward with life.? There are many factors involved.? One might be: How much?a
part of you, your life, and social circle is this car or any car???

I've always wanted a 62 Vette.? So I'm getting off cheap with my 65 SS.? But we
always keep looking & dreaming.? That's part of the fun of living the
dream.??We're only a small segment of the population.? Check out all the
admirers at shows & cruise-ins who wished they owned these cars.? Sometimes I
envy the guys in nice quiet mild stockers.? Much unlike my modified car with
rumbling Flowmasters.? But again, I Love it!!!? I'm 60 & I know the day will
come when I have to give it up.? I hope to retain all the friendships & stay
active with my club cause once a gear head always a gear
head??

Every now and again I consider trading my '66 for something else- just wondered
if anyone else has that temptation and whether or not they ended up doing it.

I have been going back and forth on it for about a yr now.

Steve:?
? I bought my '71 from a guy near Vancouver, BC, and I live in NY. I couldn't
find any members near the location, so I had the owner shoot a video of the
car, top to bottom, and then he drove it while shooting the video (probably not
the safest thing to do). I also had the owner take the car to a garage in his
town to go through the car. Turns out Canada has a standard 134 point checklist
that all garages can do on a used car. The mechanic faxed me the results and
they found everything wrong with the car, bad front bearings, alternator diodes
in wrong, brakes, etc. I ended up buying the car, but I had a very good idea of
exactly what I was getting. I also had it shipped door-to-door via a Canadian
carrier, and also learned how to import a car. But that's another story.?

It is complete,?unrestored & currently not running.??The engine is bored to
1250cc, modified with Carillo?rods & has an American Turbo Pak turbocharger not
currently installed.? 6k original miles & original front tire.? Original?silver
paint not faded & no dents.? He is the second owner & it has been stored for
years.? It is in the Rockville, Maryland area & he is asking $3300.? I only
know that these were only made for a few years, were big road bikes, & there is
a following out there just like we follow Chevelles.? If anyone is interested

You're OK Rick.??It's the seller of?the car you described that's out of touch

Z-16's,?it's not worth much at all in poor condition.? An original L-79 or Z-16
might?bring the kind of $$ you mentioned only if the buyer has a burning
desire?for a 65.??I have a fairly nice 65 SS and am aware that the 66-72 BB
models are more in demand & bring much higher prices.? I can't even guess what
the car you saw is worth but shooting from the hip I'd say probably $4-6k and
only to the right person.? Sounds like it might be a project car or on it's way
to a parts car.? Keep looking.? They're out there in your price range.? Sellers
exploit but cash talks!!?

Please let me know if I'm totally out of touch with reality :).??

?

? Yesterday I went to look at a 65 chevelle malibu?convertible.? White with
blue interior, reported to be "numbers matching". It was a 30 footer at
best.?? Panels were generally straight, some peeling & cracking of paint
between the trunk lid & top well.? Passenger front fender was pushed in right
at the front corner, looked like they sideswiped a garage door.??? Looked like
a 10 year old Earl Sheib?paint job.?? Interior looked like it was recently
done.?? Door panels looked original with repair carpeting added at the bottom 6
inches-I don't think that was original.? Carpet good,? Front bench?seat cover
looked relatively new & clean except for a 2 inch gash under the drivers
butt.??? Recent aftermarket A/C added but the water pump pulley had no
provision for a belt? Motor looked like it could have been original.??

?

As I raised the hood to look at motor I asked how much.??? 20K!? And the look
on my face must have confused the girl, she said, oh wait a minute let me check
the list inside.? A minute later she returned Oh I was wrong its 30K!? What the
heck are these dealers smoking? I went in thinking it would be in the
10-15K range.? It was certainly an OK driver but 30K is premium money for a 65
- at least I think it is.

?

I went there with the intent of really looking it over good, but decided there
was no point for further discussion.??? Is it possible/likely/reasonable to
look for a 65 convertible in the 10-15 K range that isn't a basket case?? Or am
I really out of touch with the market.?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Holley or Edelbrock

2007-06-25 Thread plgchevelle65
Anyone have anything good to say about a Demon carb?  I went from a worn out
Holley 650 DP to a 750 Demon w/mech secondaries but the 5 mpg was to much!
Swapped it for a 650 Demon with mech sec.  Mpg up to 10 -11 mostly highway
which I can live with.  Neither was an out of the box job.  Both needed alot of
work.  Low end drivability is not much.  Going thru the gears & top end is
great.  Won't idle til completely warm and a PITA at all stops.  Got to keep
the revs up to take off.  Feels like a close box & no rear gears.  Well it's a
252 first & a 3.73 rear.  Cam is a Comp 274 Hi Energy Xtreme, 236 dur 490
lift.  Down from a 284 in the six yrs I've owned it.  The guy at BG says too
much cam & go to a 575.  Wouldn't that kill the performance!!!  I've got a TKO
600 with a 2.87 first going in this winter which may solve it all and give me
both low end drivability & 1/4 mile performance.  Why don't I go with an
Edelbrock which most people say are great right out the box?  Probably the
Look.  Some of us just prefer the Holley/Demon look.  All thoughts, comments,
ideas, advice, or just ventilation appreciated.

For anyone that was at the MCC/ACES show at North East, MD Sat and/or Sun,
wasn't that "Some Show"? Over 200 Chevelles, great weather and great people.
That loaded 383 stroker that was given away kept most everyone til the end!  I
applaud the MCC leadership and all my hard working fellow and fellowette
members for another terrific show and a Great
weekend!!!

The 600 cfm vacuum secondary Holley is the most inconsistant pita carb I have
worked with.  If you go holley make it a double pumper.   Quadrajets and
Edelbrocks will work well too.

Hello ALL,

For the blessed event of removal from mailing list to occur, one need be
cognizant of the procedures involved.
One obviously cannot simply remove oneself apparently without a lot of hand
holding and parental guidance reminiscient of when one was in Elementary school
and one was duly reprimanded for something like tossing gum at girls, putting
tacks on seats, or flatulating in class.
The inconsistency of the mental awareness seemingly inherrent in individuals
who cannot grasp the minor ability to simply UN REGISTER themselves is quite
comparable to the mental obscurity of our current pathetic puppet president.
Since y'all cannot comprehend the simplictics available through the
Craft-O-Matic (thank you) unsubscribe routine, there is NO HOPE for ya.
You'll merely have to accept ALL INCOMING E-MAILS as there will be many more to
come, and you'll have to change your profile to incorporate that of which you
have become--a drooling, sniveling, incomplete Human being, subject to ANY form
of sarcasm ANYONE sees fit to have you incur.
Since you don't like where you are, go be somewhere else where your kind is
accepted like at the Salvation Army. There you should have no problem with
mental compatibility for explanations of things will be on a par with our
excuse of a president and you.

Stumble away as quickly as possible!!

I like that reply Bill. I get such a big laugh every time this happens.
I saw this thread this morning after working all night and I just about
laughed so hard that I could have awakened every one in the house. This
is all done in good clean fun, just like the fun we have when we get
together at our local cruise nights. This list is like a BS session at
our local cruise nights, along with all the good information we get from
the members of this list when we have a problem. So lighten up a bit and
enjoy the list for what it is, a bunch of people that get together who
have the common interest of Chevelles.

You, sir, fail to understand. This has been going on (both, the

Re: [Chevelle-list] Re Quarter Panel installation Cost

2007-02-05 Thread plgchevelle65
Hey Donnie: That's alot of $ you got going into that car. We must be
paying you too much as MCC Prez!! LOL!! You are correct. To do something
right costs. Whether it's time or money. Do it right, do it once and you'll
never regret it!! Hell, it's only money. The payback is when the Chevelle
looks good, is dependable & runs good, & you're out cruising! Nothing
like it. Just count all the thumbs up you get. Many guys dream. We get to
live it!!! In my opinion, worth every $ I got in my car!! Good luck on
the resto.

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Re Quarter Panel installation Cost

Amen Mike.

Just cause you can get it done cheaper doesn't mean better.

For the '69 SS I am currently doing a frame off restoration on ... I had both
quarters replaced (FULL), full floor pan, trunk pan, both front fenders (NOS),
trunk lid, front valance panel, outer fender wells, trunk drop offs, and all of
the other rust spots cut out, new metal welded in, Hood fixed and the rest of
the body smoothed. The car is now 100% rust free. Cost including parts was
about $6500. This was with me and my friend Tom taking the car apart, sanding
down the areas that were not going to be replaced down to metal and completely
stripping/gutting the insides of the car, helping out with the body work
(grinding, sanding, cutting, etc...) every weekend for 6 weeks.

I had figured about $4500 going into it...Once we started removing sheet metal,
we found other areas that needed fixing... that were NOT visible from the
start. Luckily my body man is one of the best in the business and he was able
to make most of what we needed on the spot. While the quarters were off, we
POR-15'd all exposed metal. Needed.. maybe not... but good insurance!! He
also "suggested" we fix other things while we were doing it... kind of pay me
now ... or hate yourself later for not doing it. He is a good friend, so
ripping me off was not even in the equation. So after $2000 more than I had
budgeted (and another 2 weeks of labor), it was ready to take home.

The car still needs to be final block sanded a few times to get it 100% ready
for paint... which will probably cost about another $1000 or so. Then add
about another $3500 for paint.

Cheap NO but this is what it takes and costs to do it right.

Good Luck!!

Donnie

[Chevelle-list] Tremec 5 Speed

2007-01-26 Thread plgchevelle65
Good afternoon Chevelle List: I am planning to have a Tremec 5 Speed installed
in my car this spring. I am requesting any & all thoughts & advice, even if
it's just thinking out loud. This is an expensive item and a one shot deal for
me so if there is any info or experiences out there I should know about, please
don't be shy!

Aside from normal installation situations, one item that has been brought to my
attention is that there have been problems & difficulty in power shifting at
high rpms from 2nd to 3rd. The car is a fair weather weekend driver only, an
occassional, OK, more than occassional few gears on the street, with a trip to
the drags once or twice a summer. My reflexes aren't what they were 40 years
ago & I don't do power shifting anymore anyway. The next item is whether to go
with the .64 or .82 5th gear. Would I be giving up all top end punch with the
.64 for the sake of really low highway rpms or would the .82 put me whare I
want to be & still give it some power if needed. I've done the math on the web
calculators but it appears to be a judgement call. 1st gear will be 2.87 and
the rear will be a Moser posi 3.73. The car is a 65 SS with a .40 over 327,
Muncie M-20 with Hurst, Edelbrock Alum heads & manifold, Demon 750, Comp Cams
274 Extreme, MSD, and Hedman. It currently cruises the highway at 3400 rpm at
65mph with 215x75x15 redline tires. Mostly Show but its got plenty of Go. I'm
looking maintain performance & make it highway enjoyable. All thoughts,
ideas, and any experiences you're willing to share will be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the long entry. Had to get all my thought down. Thank You All.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Small Rant: Customer Service

2006-11-09 Thread plgchevelle65

Been there.  Had it happen.  Sometimes you get a telephone order taker with not much auto knowledge and not a clue how to deal with & provide service to people.  When you get a good one, even though they don't want the liability for wrong parts or advice, etc., they will talk to you or they will transfer you.  The big parts places have separate lines for orders and for orders that need assistance determining the right choice.  I had a guy get nasty once & when he finally got the order right, he sent me the wrong size anyway.  Had to mail it all back at the company's expense & reorder.  We all lose.  I made sure to lodge a formal complaint.  I was very diplomatic & civil about it even though I was really pissed off.  I would hope the company appreciated my telling them that this guy was costing them $$.  Call Summit & tell them what happened.  They know that wives & girlfriends call all the time & they need to know if they have someone on the lines acting like that person did.  I hope you have his name.  Good Luck.  BTW, I've done the same Summit to Jeg's thing B4 also.

I know there are a few people here who have their own shops, so I figured
I'd share a small rant.

As some of you know, I'm doing a (rather slow) complete frame off resto-mod.
This will likely entail the replacement or rehab of literally everything on
the car. In other words, I will be buying a LOAD of parts and supplies for
this job.

My wife just called Summit Racing to buy some X-mas presents for my car.
She had credit card in-hand and was ready to blow a load of cash. However,
she was treated rudely by the person on the phone. They treated her like she
was some kind of dummy, so she hung up and told me.

I've been a Summit customer since I bought my first car, 15 years ago. I've
been an extremely loyal customer all this time, buying tens of thousands of
dollars worth of parts for 5 different cars.

I just gave my wife the # for Jeg's.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Next MCC Meeting?

2006-09-29 Thread plgchevelle65

Pres. Donnie Gates said there will be a short meeting at the UPS Show in Laurel on Oct. 14.  There is usually a good number of MCC members that attend this show.  Depending on who you talk to, there were 800-900 cars there last year.  The MCC helped judge.  I haven't heard anything about the judging procedures for this year yet, but based on last year they kept it simple.  So it's not a big deal & about an hour if we do it again.

Yeah! I remember those oil cans! Up until a few years ago, I still had one of those old metal spouts you had to stab into the top of the can.

It's a shallow dent in the metal that will 'pop' in and out where the metal stretched just enough. The name refers to the old metal lidded oil cans that would do the same thing when you squeezed the sides. Does anyone remember the old oil cans that you had to have a spout for? What about rotary phones? God I feel old.

To unsubscribe from this service you must first
purchase a
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation
Unit. The unit can be
obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics.
Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the
unit from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug
Administration in
Washington D.C. USA.
Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each
component in its
accompanying mesh safety bag.
Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the
perforated Gerring Mach
77 refibulator and attach them using the
eight-millimeter torque fork.
Be sure that the refibulator is mounted at a 66 degree
angle and
properly dispersed so that it is flush with the curved
section of the
Pyrex thistle tube.
Place the four sections of the triangular separation
gear into the
posture cylinder and lock them into place using the
band aid adhesive strip.
Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling hole, making
sure that it
seated correctly.
Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt
batteries in the power
chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using
the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation.
Insert the digital corkscrew through the electronic
combustion service
chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced
tungsten igniter
control module and quickly turn the inverter drive to
28.6 degrees.
Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription

down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce
ball-peen hammer while
shaking the unit vigorously.
Force open the door to the incineration valve
compartment and set the
pressure gauge to 719 psi.
Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape.
The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready
to use.
Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable
Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a
height of 229 feet
above sea level to insure that the unit receives the
proper oxygen level
and barometric pressure.
Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to
within the
parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and
apply pressure to
the wing shaft on the southern most section of the

Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the
unit, rotate the

has been obtained
when the green light begins to flash, signifying that
the red light is
about to go off.
Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch

Re: [Chevelle-list] Trouble with the starter on the 69 Chevelle

2006-08-01 Thread plgchevelle65

I always start with the easiest fix.  No juice, no click, no nothing & the acc's work.  Assuming it's a good battery, dirty or poor battery contacts.  It's not the corrosion you can see, it's what you can't see between the cables & the posts.  Try cleaning the cables & posts & check all contacts.  Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think the hot weather may also have an effect on a corrosive lead contact.  I earned a steak dinner & a night with a pretty girl on this exact thing many, many, many years ago!!

A member of mine is having problems with his starter??  You guys have any suggestions??  Here's his story

Morning guys (or gals, depending on who opens this email),

I’m having trouble with the starter on the Chevelle. Last night I went to start the car it wouldn’t start. Turn the key and nothing. No click, no nothing. Everything else works, headlights, radio, interior light, etc. I was able to jump start the car by coasting and letting the clutch out. It took me about twenty-five minutes to get home. I turned the car off once in the garage, then tried starting the car again. The car started without hesitation. This is typical when ever I experience this problem. This might happen twice in a week or it may happen once every couple months. The only consistency is it never seems to happen in cool weather.

I’m considering the following items next,

- by passing the neutral safety switch.

- installing a new ignition switch.

A little history,

This started around three years ago. At that time I had a rebuilt GM high torque starter. I installed a reduction starter from Jeg’s about six weeks ago giving into the heat soak theory with the stock starter and headers. I considered changing the battery cable along with the starter but it looked in perfect shape, no damage or corrosion.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Donnie

Re: [Chevelle-list] air filters?

2006-04-12 Thread plgchevelle65

Eddie:  I have a K&N & like it.  It looks great & research has shown better air flow, filtering and a slight HP gain.  They are expensive to buy but have a 1,000,000 mile life span.  I wash, clean & oil mine in the spring & it lasts all season til it goes to sleep in October.  You have to buy the K&N recharge kit to maintain it.  Costs about $9.95 for the cleaner & oil which can last 2x.  Unless your car is stock, no reason to use the paper element.  Besides they tend to look ratty after a while.  I notice some beautiful cars at shows with modified engines & these nasty paper filters.  When I try to be constructive & mention to someone that their modified engine deserves better than that dirty paper filter, you'd think I called their kid ugly!  Some people are smart & keep a fresh one for shows but IMO they still don't look as nice as the K&N.

Anyone know of other ways or products to clean & service the K&N's or is the recharge kit all their is?

hey guys, I have another question. I am going to get a new air filter soon and
I was looking at the K&N Extreme filters they have and they state it adds more
HP to your engine because it adds more air through. It sounds good! However,
does anyone use these types of filter from K&N? Are they good? Any cons? Or,
should I stick with the old stock paper filter? thanks

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire - Wheel Backspacing

2006-03-28 Thread plgchevelle65

Anyone have experiences & knowledge to share when you put a 68-72 12 bolt in a 64-67.  How do the sizes & backspacing numbers work then?  Biggest I could get in my 65 was 235's with standard Rallyes with I think 4" backspace.  And I got some rub on one side!

A car's wheelwell doesn't know what size wheel you're using but the total width & diameter of the tire & wheel combo. But to answer your question,15" wheels will give you a much greater tire selection than 14" units.
1964-67's can handle up to a 285-width rear tire and 68-72's can handle up to a 315-width. Running these widths require getting the backspacing spot-on.

Thanks, already printed it out. If I wanted to stay with the same SS wheel but try to put larger tires do you have a recommendation? Would 15" be better and fit ok with bigger tire?

While the results are the same, the terminology and measurement techniques are a bit different between the two.  Check this page on my web site; explains offset and backspacing pretty well.

Question;

Would someone on the list mind explaining wheel / tire backspacing? Remember on the Chevelle I had in high school when I put bigger tires on I had scraping issues. Especially on the rear. Been reading some posts on Team Chevelle and everyone talks about wheel and tire combinations in conjunction with backspacing. Is this some new stuff? I will probably be changing the tires and or wheels on the car I bought so I though I would start asking now. I believe the wheels on the car now are the stock 14" type SS wheel.

Thanks

Hey,

Thanks for eveyones input on my quest for the perfect 69. Very good points to consider and I now have some cars to check on regarding many of the concerns that you collectevly have mentioned.

Question, how important is complete numbers matching for a true SS? Many of the cars have engines and some trannys that have been updated or changed and might be the only significant item that does not match the original car.

Steve:  Welcome to the List.  Obviously you've got a few miles on you & a few dollars to spend.  I had a 65SS in 65.  After the Army, a few marriages & 3 kids, at the age of 52 I went looking for my dream.  You can call it a mid-life thing if you want.  Like yourself I'm not super mechanical.  I can do more with my head than I can with my hands.  But I also love driving my 65SS, having some knowledge & being around the shows & people. Occassionally you'll hear a remark about those who can do & those who buy.  Don't let it bother you.  If you look at what's going on in today's muscle car sales & auctions you'll see our generation doesn't have 10 years to build a car.  There are muscle car wizards out there that love to build & sell.  Those of us that can't build, love to drive & maintain, and share the passion.  Maintenance alone on one of these cars can be a full time spring to summer job!  Especially if you want to show it.  Once you buy, you'll want to add your own touches.

The guys on this List are incredible.  The amount of expertise & knowledge is mind boggling.  No one holds back.  The name of the game is HELP & SHARING with RESPECT for all.  Indicate what area you live in & the guys will find you.  There are also Chevelle Clubs throughout the US, my own is the Maryland CC, check out our website, & National organizations such as ACES.  The List as well as all these other areas can be valuable when looking for the right car.  I found mine on the List & had it shipped from the west coast almost 5 years ago.  The process took about 3 months to complete from search to delivery.  Once again Good Luck & Welcome to the List.  Be careful when talking to strangers & utilize & listen to these guys on the List.  They won't steer you wrong!

Danny;

Thanks for your response and comments. My perfect car is the one I had in high school (1970-1974) a 69 Chevelle SS-396 (not sure hp I had) Lemans Blue hard top with white vinyl roof and two racing stripes down hood and trunk with white pin stripes on the side. While my car had bench seats, black interior and column shift automatic I would like to have what I always wanted the car to have, bucket seats and 4 speed transmission. Would like to find one with factory air as I don't imagine I will be as concerned about racing it now as I was then but rather be more concerned with my wife being happy with air conditioner. I believe the car would really have looked better with a white interior for seats and that's what I would like now as I am probably better equipped to take care of them.

Danny, finding this car is probably like looking for a needle in a hay stack however that is the perfect car for me. I just want to try to find one as close to this configuration as possible. As far as price I am fairly flexible based on the quality of the car in relation to what it is worth. I am open to a fully restored car done by a quality restoration facility or a really clean car that would be fun to own and drive. In dollar terms say from 15,000 to 50,000. Due to business commitments I don't have a lot of spare time and am not really mechanically inclined but do enjoy driving the cars and being around people and events that share the same passion.

Does this help for starters?

I've been doing engine work for over 40 years and am just about to fire up my brand new 350.  I was considering doing it without ignition wire looms but am now rethinking it.  My ignorance about whether it would harm the silicone wires was easily cured by asking the Chevelle list, I keep my laptop in the garage while working there.

So you're saying that if someone honestly doesn't know something about their cars they shouldn't ask a question? Especially since you think that they are 'the dumbest dumb people'?

This list has the best mix of knowledgeable folks coupled with people who normally wouldn't even think about working on their car, but do because they can get good intelligent (for the most part) information, without being told they are dumb for asking. Sometimes people just need some reassurance that their line of thinking is correct so that they can move on with some confidence.

Maturity and respect for fellow Chevelle owners is what make this list great. See if you can gather some up.

It is a fun forum , we have a way to un-sub, I'm sure someonewill post it..That's my cue!   :-)))To unsubscribe from this service you must first purchase a Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit. The unit can be obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics. Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the unit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug Administration in Washington D.C. USA. Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each component in its accompanying mesh safety bag. Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the perforated Gerring Mach 77 refibulator and attach them using the eight-millimeter torque fork. Be sure that the refibulator is mounted at a 66 degree angle and properly dispersed so that it is flush with the curved section of the Pyrex thistle tube. Place the four sections of the triangular separation gear into the posture cylinder and lock them into place using the band aid adhesive strip. Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling hole, making sure that it seated correctly. Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt batteries in the power chamber. The device should be calibrated before operation using the optional digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation. Insert the digital corkscrew through the electronic combustion service chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced tungsten igniter control module and quickly turn the inverter drive to 28.6 degrees. Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit upside down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce ball-peen hammer while shaking the unit vigorously. Force open the door to the incineration valve compartment and set the pressure gauge to 719 psi. Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape. The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready to use. Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a height of 229 feet above sea level to insure that the unit receives the proper oxygen level and barometric pressure. Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to within the parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and apply pressure to the wing shaft on the southern most section of the modular accelerator. Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the unit, rotate the heater core to the "on" position. The "on" position has been obtained when the green light begins to flash, signifying that the red light is about to go off. Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch labeled "ON/OFF" to the "ON" position and count to 47 before logging on to the system. Logon using your username and password and wait for the prompt. Once prompted you must check the box with the appropriate action you wish to take and then press the pressure release button and turn off the compressor while turning the hand crank at 231 meters per minute. Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift, number lock, escape and tab simultaneously. Press enter. You will have one second to complete the procedure. If you fail to respond in the time limit allowed, simply purchase a new Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit and start from the beginning. Please remember that this is the only way we will accept for you to unsubscribe from this service. We have made every attempt to simplify the procedure for your convenience. Failure to comply with the unsubscribe policy will result in immediate termination of your subscription so please follow the above directions closely Regards The Chevelle List

I agree on the point that the market is going crazy. I thought last night was nuts ($205k for a z28?)..but when you think about it, certain cars like that Z28 or the '66 Chevelle are very rare finds, so what is the real value? I've seen it posted here before that it's whatever someone will pay for it. Not sure that's the way I'd go looking for an investment, but most of those guys aren't worried about that. It does bother me

As far as a 340 Cuda not being a performance car, I'll assume you've never driven a 340 car or maybe you did and it wasn't running right. It's like saying a small block 327 Chevelle isn't one. That little motor gets up and goes. It doesn't have to have a Hemi to be a performance/muscle car.

I really have mixed emotions about what is happening with the classic
car market.  On one hand it's really great to see guys make good money
selling their cars, but I just think the rich crowd has gone way
overboard.  These guys have priced the middle class blue collar car
collect/DRIVER (like me) out of the market.  These guys even paid 61 Gs
for a 340 ci 71 Cuda.   It was nice, but not even a performance car
except for a 4 sp.  The real /hot rods/ just seemed to break even.  My
65 SS will never make it to
BJ, but then again I drive it when I can, and even bang a few 6000 rpm
shifts.

Hello -

I've just subscribed to this list, and I want to introduce myself before I
start posting.

My name is Karl and I just (as in this afternoon) purchased a 71 Chevelle.

I've had fast, (mostly) old cars all my life, starting with a 70 Camaro when
I was in high school.

I've also had a 77 Z/28 and 76 Stingray.

I had a son in 98 and the (now ex) wife pressured me into getting rid of my
Z/28 and get a minivan needless to say, things didn't last very long with
her.

Since 1998, I've been driving more "practical" vehicles and my living
arrangements weren't really conducive to having an old car to work on.

The (new) wife and I bought a house a few months ago and, thanks to the side
money I've been earning making web sites, I've been able to afford a project
car.

The Chevelle I just bought was owned by the neighbor of my babysitter. The
guy's had it since 2001 and "always planned on working on it" but never did.

It is somewhat of a basket case. There's rust in all the stereotypical
places, the interior is a mess, they tried putting on a cowl induction scoop
with pop rivets, and all sorts of small issues.

The two main problems are the roof is completely rusted underneath the vinyl
top. The whole roof will need to be transplanted. The second issue is the
steering column must be completely screwed up, because you basically have to
"hot wire" the car to drive it.

For the price I paid, I'm psyched to have it. The point, to me, of owning
an old car is to work on it. I'm not the kind of guy who wants to have the
car already done for him. To me, the joy comes from knowing I'm eventually
going to touch every nut and bolt on this car.

I plan on doing the "resto-rod" thing - making it look mostly stock, except
for a few upgrades to the interior such as seats and dash stuff.

All best are off for the drive train, suspension, and breaks though.

Anyway, enough babbling from me. I'm very glad to have found this list.

Last, can someone tell me something about my car from this VIN?

Never Let it out of you sight except for shows or at the track where there's people,  crowds & you're known.  All the owners watch out for one another.  It'd be pretty tough to steal a car out of an active event.  That's difficult for you daily drivers.  You guys may park & leave your vehicles like normal people do.  I'm even uncomfortable overnight at 2 day shows.  If you're coming after my car you better have a gun.  It's not worth dying over but don't point a knife or a stick at me.  And please don't bully me without a gun.  I was drafted in 68 & never got a chance to kill anybody.  Still crazy after all these years.  But seriously guys, I'm fully insured.  I may be gray & look vulnerable but looks are deceiving!!  I don't own a gun and it's a good thing.  My wife would have blown me away years ago!!  LOL!!

Here's another interesting story, which broke here in northeastern WI recently. It's been written up in Old Cars Weekly (published in central WI), so I guess the story must be basically true.

Apparently an old gentleman passed away, and his heirs found 20-some semi trailers with the doors welded shut. When they broke them open, they found quite a treasure trove of vintage Chevy iron.

A true statement.  "Most of us don't have money to burn"!!  I had a 65 SS in 65 when I was a single guy with not much responsibility.  Then came the Army, 2 wives & 3 kids.  After driving a couple of so-so 65 SS's during the next 35 years.  At the age of 53  I finally got something nice.  Paid a fair but affordable price.  A few months later a Z-16 was offered at $200k out of a museum.  This was 2001.  I inquired and in my head I was selling my new 65 SS and arranging financing with my house, my IRA &  my children's college funds.  Spoke to my wife about it.  I think she had the attorney's phone number & a bag packed within minutes & was threatening to have me committed before she left.  OK.  It was a dream & I came back to earth.  But if I could have made it happen, what would that Z-16 be worth today?   Might have been a pretty good investment.  Of course I would have driven it.  My car's not a Picasso to hang on the wall.  I'll just have to be happy with my regular old 65 SS.  But I can always dream about owning a Z-16.  Do you guys with the 70's do the same when it comes to an LS-6?

What was the Auction number for the $150,000.00 convertible? Sorry but I can't find it. The (Blue) had sold for $172,000.00 @ the Barrett-Jackson auction January 17-20 2002. The (Black) LS6 went for $324,000.00 Jan 29 2005 .The Blue one was part of a discussion back 3 years or so when someone asked "If you could own any car what would it be". My answer was a 70 LS6 convertible. Someone wrote back and send a link where there was one for sale. The car was for sale for $175000.00 @ the time. The last I heard about the car is it went for $350,000.00 this summer. A documented (26 miles) LS6  hardtop went for $354,200.00 on Ebay. Look @ what the other cars brought in @ these auctions. I'm not saying these prices are right but don't you think if someone is paying that kind of money for a car they wouldn't have the documentation checked out? Bottom line is Some people have money to burn and most of us don't.

2005-12-02 Thread plgchevelle65

Is your 4speed an M-20 or 21?  Makes a big difference when selecting rear gears.  Also how much cam are you running?  Reason I ask is I had a close box M-21 with a 2.20 first & a Comp Cams 284 Xtreme.  This original setup came from the upper NW region of Wash State.  Ran well on the back roads there.  Wouldn't run worth a damn in suburban MD.  Sluggish starting in first & spent most of the time in third.  I had the tranny rebuilt to a 2.56 first & reduced the cam to a 274 while leaving the 3.73 in the rear.  The car now performs well & is fun to drive in most conditions & is a great cruiser.  Plenty of "snap" too.  The hiway situ has already been discussed.  It would seem to me that when you're discussing this stuff you've got to make a distinction between a 4speed & an automatic.  They perform differently.  Hiway rpms may be similar but cruisin characteristics are totally different.  You still have to make your decision accordingly.  Not trying to be confusing.  Just something to think about.  It's no fun to make the wrong decision because you didn't have all the opinions.  Just thinking out loud as usual.  Good Luck!!

I think Clint also hit it right on the head when he said that "without O/D, gearing is a big compromise."

I had no idea that would generate so many posts!

That is why I asked the ring and pinion question in the first place.  For the time being I am going to stick with the 4 speed tranny and was kind of looking for a gear ratio that was fun to drive AND realistic at the same time.
Thank you to all who responded.  Before asking the question I was leaning towards the 3:73's but after reading the opinions and thinking about the use of my car, i believe I will go with something a little more driver friendly.

Once again, thanks for all the help, this list is great!

Re: [Chevelle-list] Ring and Pinion

2005-12-01 Thread plgchevelle65

Ryan:  I have a 3.73 in a 12 bolt & yes it's marginal on the hiway.  I try to stay off & always check out mapquests non-hiway directions for shows.  I have a strong 327 & an M-20 Muncie 4speed.  Tires are Coker redlines 75 series about 28 inches.  Cruisin at 50-55 seems to be the best.  Of course going through a set is better!  At 60-65 mph I'm doing about 2900 to 3200 rpms and people are blowing me off the road.  The furthest I drive to a show on the hiway is 100 miles one way once a year to the MCC show in Northeast, MD.  Flowmasters make it noisy but its sweet noise!!  Suburban & backroad is perfect for a 3.73.  Limit your hiway & you'll be fine.  If you're looking to drive 500 miles to major events, trailer, or get a higher gear like 3.08.  But you may lose your "snap".  A 3.55 probably would only be a few 100 rpms less than a 3.73.  Some hiway miles are OK but you don't want to do 30-40-50 or more regularly.  I'm not interested in burning out my engine prematurely.  For what it cost to build I'd like to make it last many years.  I also race it a few times a season.  Note that my car is not a daily driver & is only used during the season on weekends from May to November, approximately 1000-1200 miles.

Bottom line is that a 3.73 is a great all around gear, but you need to analyze your driving & be realistic when selecting.

I know that gear ratio has been a topic a lot lately but I am going to purchase my new set this week.  I noticed that some people are running 3:73's and was wondering how they liked them as an all around gear.  I noticed that Clint had mentioned that 3:73's were a marginal gear for the highway.  I guess what I was wondering was would a numerically lower gear set be a better route for a cruizer?  I would still like a little snap at times but I also dont want to be running 4500rpm down the highway.  I know there are formulas out there but was wanting personal opinions from people that have cruizers.  Let me know what you think.
Glad I bought a bunch of parts this week becuase it is snowing right now and I can hide in the garage!

Re: [Chevelle-list] 3.73 or 4.56?

2005-11-29 Thread plgchevelle65

Hi Jim:  I've heard what everyone said & I agree with most.  I've got a pretty healthy 327 in a 65 SS with a M-20 4 speed, a 12 bolt & 3.73 gears.  I'm running Coker 75 series redline tires about 28 inches high.  It's great in town, the suburbs & back roads.  On the highway at 60-65 I'm taching 3000-3200 rpms & people are blowing me off the road.  I try to drive non-highway as much as possible.  I also drag race it a few time a season.  The future may include a 5 or 6 speed.  It's mainly a show car & a cruiser.  The max its been on the road is 100 miles one way.  The Flowmasters are singing all the way!!  It's noisy!

If you plan little or no highway use & will be driving mostly in town & around, with an occasional trip to the drags, you could get away with the 4.56.  If you plan to cruise & put it on the road stay away.  Go with the 3.55-3.73.  The 3.73 is about the most versitile and that's stretching it.  Use the ratio that will best fit what your plans are for the car.  Be realistic.  With a 4.56 you may have to trailer to some events as necessary.  I enjoy driving my car & am not interested in burning out my engine prematurely.  Those 5 & 6 speeds with the .8 & .6 gears are looking better every year!!  Good luck with your decision & Happy Cruising!!!

Yeah, me too.  I've also always been careful of hitting rev limiters on other cars I've owned.  I am considering a rev limiter for the Chevelle, but have always wonder if a rev limiter can cause harm to an engine as well?  Or is it just fouled plugs at worst?  Does anyone have an opinion on that?Of course, even if the rev limiter caused some damage, it's probably not as serious as over revving an engine I'm sure.  There's no KABOOM! when you hit a rev limiter.  Just wondering if there might be long term harm. Thanks,MattAt 11:29 AM 10/13/2005, you wrote:

Well I am 41, been around cars my whole life and have not heard the term "float the valves"  doesn't sound like a good thing to do, but what is it?  My guess - depressing clutch to shift, but intenially not taking your foot off the gas?

Back in fall of 64 at York US 30 Dragway in PA I saw Malcom Durham match race Ronnie Sox.  Malcom was in a 65 Chevelle, I think it was Strip Blazer III, and Sox was in a Comet or a Mopar.  I forget because I was focused on the Chevelle.  Sox won the first round.  Malcom blew him away on the second round & sucked a valve going through the lights.  Match race over for the night.  I've been hooked on 65's ever since!  The following April I ordered an L-79 4speed SS.  I'm on my 4th one today.  Phil G.  Old fart too.

In no particular order: Health, family, religion, people, Chevelles, money, etc., etc., etc.  Every individual sets their own priorities.  I'd like to think I have mine in order which is why I can enjoy my Chevelle so much as part of my life!!

Hi Craig:  I grew up in the 60's & I can relate to what you said.  Would I still like to have my L-79 SS from 1965?  Of course I would but it's long gone to the crusher.  Sold it in 74 after the Army & during my first marriage.  Had no place to keep it anyway & the last thing on my mind was owning a 40 year old car in 2005.  Aftermarket was the way back then.  Either performance or looks, and most of the time you sold what you took off.  Never occurred to us to save for numbers matching in the future.  The number of people that are original owners of these muscle machines are few & far between.  I wish my Mom had a house & garage where I could have stored mine for 30 years.  Even as a rustbucket it would have been worth a fortune today as an oringinal L-79.  You don't even want to know about the 58-59 Baseball card collection I sold for $10.  Bought a tank of gas & went out on a date.  Today I own my 4th 65 SS and every time I drive it, it makes me smile.  No numbers matching anything but some of the sheetmetal.  No muncie shifter and no chalk marks anywhere.  Close the hood & it looks like the 60's.  A lot of shine and custom wheels.  Not much stock under the hood either and the flowmasters are like music.  Nothing stuffy about me or my car and people let me know they approve all the time.  I admire and respect the stockers and the people that build them and if I did have that first 65, I'm afraid it would have to be a trailer queen today.  Personally, I want to drive, have fun and leave the numbers to the purists.  Let them worry about the right screws, bolts, and chalk marks.  If it's your car you do whatever makes you smile whether that's going for 1000 points, pro street or in between!!  And NEVER condemn those that don't share your views.  To each his own.  That's one of the beauty's of this hobby.  The flexibilty to be yourself!

As I "restore" my 66, my plans are to go original within reason - the body and interior will be original, but I will make safety and performance upgrades. And like you, if I use after market parts, I will keep the original parts for the next guy or gal, if I ever sell this thing of course...

I don't know about anyone else, but I grew up in the muscle car era - had a '66 GTO in high school and worked at a local factory as a press operator to pay for it. The FIRST thing that happened to that car was ET mags. Then headers and 'vette exhaust under the door. Then a Holley 850 double because my buddy's Z28 spanked me. Then a Hurst shifter. I have no idea what happened to the original parts. That was muscle car era hotrodding. Hotrodding 32 Fords was a whole other thing but with muscle cars it was all about exhaust, cams, wheels, carbs and once in a while some serious dude would port the heads - and with cast iron, that was no mean potatoes -  or stroke & bore. Only the south end greasers did that stuff...not us north end frat boys - and they cleaned our clocks at the local 1/4 every Saturday night.

Today, muscle cars are about getting the chalk marks correct on the rear end diff and sourcing NOS bias ply tires. I'm sorry, but I don't really get that. I mean, I respect it and I respect the meticulous attention to detail, etc., but it so not me. For years, I didn't even know how to tell if the block matched the chassis - I didn't know or think it was important. When I got my Chevelle years ago, as soon as I had the money, off came the heads and on went aluminum...and a cam and carb and wheels with some swingin' KDW tires. Oh yeah, and headers and xpipe and Flowmasters and lower springs and a Mallory and the A/C is out in the shed. Now it's MY car. It sounds, looks, and drives like the nasty old girl she is. It ain't perfect - nothing I have is - but I like it.

At least this time I kept the heads, intake, A/C and manifolds. They're sitting around collecting cobwebs...probably leaking oil on something.

Sorry I missed the JK.  I like em all but the 65 SS is my drug of choice!!  I remember a $1500 65 Chevelle AM/FM on Ebay over a year ago.  I had a non working AM at the time.  I bought another AM cheap to fill the holes for shows & had mine converted to AM/FM by a guy at Carlisle.  It's got some static & needs a part from Radio Shack.  I don't use it much but it works OK.  Mostly when I cruise I just listen to the sound of the Flowmasters.  Sometimes it's better than music and almost always better than the news!!  Have a great weekend.

Phil:
Please reread what I said about 65's.( I still feel the only Chevelle ever made was the 1965 but that is my problem< JK>). JK means Just Joking . I would never tell anyone that I didn't like their year of Chevelle.
Dan Blockers Z16 (Terry Gunter owned) sold for $250 K and I heard that when the smoke cleared Terry Gunter's other  Z16 sold for 350 K (there was a car trade and some cash) . It isn't only BJ and others making cars so expensive. Many parts are very rare and they are not making them anymore. As an example they made about 2794 AM-FM radios in 1965. The U69 option sold for $150.15  with the car. I have bought and sold many for $350.00 - $500.00 but now I'm seeing them go for $1500.00. Why ? Because it is a rare option, owners of 65's want them and they aren't making them anymore. I wonder how many went to the crusher , sitting on a bench or in another car?  According to many people restoring cars (private and shops) many  parts that are reproduced are junk. In this case no one makes a replacement. Well if you can't live without that AM-FM and must have it you may be paying $1600.00 for it because when the last one sold 10 others wanted it too. Does that make your car worth another $1600.00 ?  I don't think so but many out there are willing to pay big bucks . It's sad to see a car worth $5000.00  go for 15-20 K but one reason is there are so many Baby Boomers that want a "Blast from the Past " and they have the money to do it. Oh well time to go make some money to spend on parts !
Has anyone heard from John L. yet?

Years ago when I was at a car show it dawned on me what a jerk I was about certain cars being displayed. The particular car that I had been looking at was a GM car from the 60's that I really thought was a POS. While I was standing there thinking about the car I heard the owner talking to another guy. He was talking about all the hard work he had done and how on his limited income he had struggled for years trying to make his car presentable. It then dawned on me not everyone can put thousands of dollars into a car.( I still feel the only Chevelle ever made was the 1965 but that is my problem< JK>) >From that day on I have had a completely different attitude about Queens vs Drivers vs unrestored cars vs ugly cars vs unpopular cars vs etc. .Just because I don't like a certain car doesn't mean that its not a nice car .I know many think its horrible to take a nice car and put late model running gear or make a race car out of a numbers matching. Bottom line ? If it's your car, Do what ya want to do . If its someone else's car respect them for what they have done not what you think should have been done.

JJ:  Your points are well taken.  Maybe someday those well known car guys will say I'm here to enjoy the people & cars, share a piece of history & maybe drum up some business.  Do not judge my car.  Let the little guy in a driver win the $25 trophy.  He continues to work on & drive his car while I just dust mine off.  That may sound harsh but it's realistic.  Anyone who likes to compete likes the rush of the win.  Step back & think why we go to shows?  OK.  We all like the people & cars or we wouldn't be there.  But even at a point judged show there has to equity.  Ever been to a show that's club dominated & full of "politics".  You could have the best in show & go home empty.  Don't go back to those shows do you?  Step up with time & money is not the answer.  You enter to compete & the competition should be fair.  There are gender divisions in sports for a reason.  Some have weight classifications.  At recreational levels there are age groupings also.  There are reasons for all.  You could make the case that at the professional level weight & age doesn't matter.  It's head to head until you can't compete anymore at the level to win.  That may be so in the big team sports but in individual sports it matters.  Why are there now seniors tours in golf & tennis?  Golf at 50 but tennis is dominated by teens & 20 somethings & you're old in your 30's.  Kinda like an older 10 year old restoration weekend  driver that still looks good going against a real trailer queen that's been driven 5 miles total on & off the trailer for ten years.  There are many other details in day to day life that have to be factored in.  We are all not equal other than the fact that we own & love Chevelles.  Everyone doesn't have the ability money or lifestyle to do a museum quality car to include a tow vehicle & trailer.  I admire those cars but prefer a driver which over the long haul may have as much $$ invested in it.  We all get our own type of enjoyment whether a driver or queen.  I realize I may not be making any friends here but then again I may also be speaking for the silent majority.  It just needs to be said!  Maybe someone out there has a creative solution.  I don't without the time & money factors.

I'm not whining & this is not a personal crusade whether you believe it or not.  I love the people & have loved Chevelles since 1964.  Those of you that know me know I have a 65 mild modified driver that shows well & wins often.  I keep it nice & like to compete.  It's a 10 year old restoration & I fall into the exact category of becoming less competitive with newer restorations & non-competitive with queens.  Most seasonal weekend drivers are in this category.  Oh.  I also like to take it to the dragstrip a few times a year.

That's it for me.  I've said it all & will not bother the List on the subject again.  I think of myself as a nice guy.  Willing to help anyone that asks.  But this trailer vs driver thing really got me started.  Thanks Donnie G.  Anyone that wants to comment to me personally, positive only I hope, can email me off List at [EMAIL PROTECTED].  Thanks guys.

Hey Phil
I agree that there is a difference between a car that is driven and a car that is driven off a trailer.  I've been flat on my back in the grass enough to know that if you drive a car there will be dirt and chips and bugs that you just cant get to.  I've been on both sides of this in that I have built cars that are drivers and helped to build queens.  The people that drive em love the fact that they can hop in and go and the people that own the queens get a lot of joy in being able to share a piece of history.  And I even know people who build a driver but plan the coming out to coincide with show season so that they can show the car while it is still fresh.

I guess my point is that sometimes we all need to step back and think about why we are going to shows.  In particular going to a show judged on points.  Those that are going to a show just to be there and enjoy the cars/people usually could care less whether they win a trophy or not no matter what they have in the show.  In particular, I know the owner of a well known car that has won countless awards and notoriety, who gets more joy out of just being there and letting others enjoy the car than he does with the awards.  More than once he has said that he would rather others get the awards even though he car is clearly the best in show.  But there are people who are going to a show just to get a trophy.  If your going to a points based show and want to win a trophy then you have to step up and take the time and money to compete against the points sheet reguardless of whether you drive the car or not.  I know a lot of people who own drivers that

2005-08-31 Thread plgchevelle65

Hi JJ:  Crawl underneath & check out a weekend driver.  Few if any can compete with a true trailer queen.  These cars are restored to 995-1000 point stature & never put on the road again.  These guys must have barometers stuck up themselves.  I've seen them trailer up just seconds B4 the rain comes.  Years of just driving to shows, 1000-1500 miles a season does cause deterioration from normal wear, etc.  All the cleaning & painting in the world will not prevent it from showing.  Queens remain pristine forever!  While the weekend show car may look super clean up top and really sharp to an observer, to a judge it's no contest.  Not even close in the case of a real driver.  Again, crawl underneath.  This is the true difference & real concern of drivers vs queens!!  It's apples & oranges.

We're not talking about rustbucket DD's cause there are some nice restored DD's out there but a true restored DD competing against a weekend restored driver is in the same situation as the restored weekender against a true trailor queen.  When you start crawling & judging it is no contest.  Yes it's true that some guys trailer for convenience & necessity because of distance to shows & performance gearing, etc.  However many of these cars are driven locally and it shows, and even raced.  The true queens once complete only come on & off the trailer.  Just doesn't seem right that they compete in the same class when they're not!   I don't have the answer either.  The inequity exists & we all know it.  Once again I've said enough.  My appologies if I offend anyone.  None offense intended.

P.S. I kinda think it's neat when guys put those mirrors up under their cars.

Maybe just to clear up a few things...

We aren't talking daily drivers versus trailer queens.  At our show we have a daily driver class for cars that are a person's main mode of transportation.  Its an issue of putting a restored car that is driven against one that is trailered.

As an interesting observation at many of the shows I have been to I have seen just as many(if not more) modified trailer queens as I have numbers matching restos.

Personally I don't think there is an easy answer for this.  Trailers are needed for one of two things: convenience or necessity.

Chuck & Don:  I don't have any technical knowledge on the subject but I agree with you both.  GREED runs the oil industry, as well as the tobacco, alchohol, food, utilities industry & every other major commodity in this country.  It's part of what the free enterprise system is all about & the democratic way.  The rich get richer.  We are all getting raped on the price of gas.   Keep in mind that eventually oil will be depleted & the world will be forced to look for alternatives.  Not to mention the number of people world wide that work in the oil industry.  The OPEC countries will then go broke.  This is centuries away but realistic.  Also, much of the easy oil has been pumped & what is still available is getting harder to get out of the ground.  It's been said to me that the Alaskan stuff is very crude & more expensive to refine.  Venezuela doesn't like us & sells mostly to China & Mexico will be changing leadership in a few years & the front runner isn't the most pro USA & will be asking for concessions to continue selling to America.  What can we do about it.  Stop driving?  Get serious.  Call on Congress?  Get serious again.  The people must band together in an organized manner & show the world we won't put up with this anymore.  How to accomplish that I don't know.  We grumble, but it's hard to complain when most of the world lives in poverty compared to us & people go hungry.  Other nations can't help their sick & elderly, and can't educate their young to end their miserable existence & stop the cycle.  We are not perfect as a nation & have a long way to go but if expensive gas is the worst we have to deal with compared to the reast of the world's miseries, I'll take it for now!  I'm not happy about it either.  I grew up in a small family business where you treated you customers as friends & didn't try to screw them out of their last nickle and everyone in the neighborhood cared about one another.  I'm afraid those times are gone.  But I'm a proud first generation American, a Veteran, a husband, a father, a middleclass taxpayer, and a Chevelle Owner.  I'll take this life anyday over other worldly alternatives!!  BTW, I'm also a hard core Democrat!!!  Sorry for the tirade but the word GREED just set me off.  Thanks for listening.  Happy Cruisin' Guys.

There's the same amount of gas whether the companies charge $2 a gallon or
$4 a gallon. The only thing that really changes is the profit margin. The
oil companies, oil producing countries & the politicians all talk a lot
about supply & demand & crude oil productivity & refinery productivity all
causing the prices to go up & down. But that's not necessarily true. If the
oil producing countries cut down on their crude production or the refineries
cut down on their production, there would be less product to sell but that
doesn't mean it cost them any more or less to make each gallon of gas or
oil. The big companies & oil producing countries are all making record
profits. They charge more money because they can, not because they have too.
The American consumer is being raped by the oil & gas companies. It is
simple greed. If everyone in the oil food chain cut their profits by say
1/3, everyone would still be making a good profit but the price of gas would
go down considerably. They won't do this of course because they don't have
too. I'm all for people & businesses making money, it's what we work for &
what keeps the economy going. But when is it enough? Especially when you're
talking about a necessary commodity such as gas, oil & natural gas. In our
society it is a necessity. Why can't they be happy with making millions
instead of billions? or at least a few billion instead of many billion?
Don't you realize that even if we all gave up our performance cars &
everyone in the country drove cars that got 50mpg, the oil companies would
then charge $6 a gallon so they could keep their profits up. It's not the
oil, it's the greed that's the problem. I remember back many years ago when
they use to tell us to keep your car running when stopped for a train or a
red light because it used more gas to start it than to keep it running. But
many years later they admitted that wasn't really true. They just wanted to
sell more gas. Remember the gas shortages of 1973? Long lines at the pumps,
etc? But once the price jumped up from 40 cents a gallon to over a dollar,
all of a sudden there was no more shortage. There hasn't been a shortage in
the last 30 years. Oil isn't the problem friends, greed is the problem.
Unfortunately it isn't going to change. Of course this is a very simplified
opinion of these problems. This could be discussed for
hours/days/weeks/years on end but I really just wanted to vent some. Sorry
for the long winded tirade.

2005-08-29 Thread plgchevelle65

Donnie:  This message says alot.  Enjoys driving car.  Really can't compete financially against the "pros".  Stopped going to most shows.

If you go to any of the cruises you see cars there you never see at shows.  Maybe it's the
work to keep them clean and be competitive, maybe these guys just don't care obout shows & competition or maybe they know the queens will win anyway.  It's true that some guys pull into a show & don't even bother to clean up.  I've seen cars you could grow corn in the carpets.  Obviously those guys "don't & can't" expect to win so I hope they're not grumblng when the trophies are handed out.  My judging team in NE spent time with some young owners after judging their cars giving tips.  These were daily drivers & most of the advice was in the area of cleaning up the car & appearance.  Even with rust & works in progress.  These were young guys with not alot of $$.  But they wanted to put their cars in a show & compete.  They have a Daily Driver class.  What if there was no DD class & a DD can be a restored car as well.  Some of these cars would be uncompetitive with restored weekend drivers.   In many but not all classes, there is nothing equal between driven & trailored cars.  Once again, I'm not complaining but as thoughts come to mind I'll speak out.  I don't have the answer but I know exactly where Bob Haggard is coming from.  I take pride in my car & enjoy driving & competing but I also know the day may come when I just cruise to the Dunkin' Donuts & Jimmy Cone & let the queens win.  I don't have the answer but I think I'm hearing that most guys see the obvious inequity also.

Instead of a "trailer queen" class you can have a "driven" class that people can
enter, it sounds better. I don't have the cash to buy a truck and trailer and I
enjoy driving my old cars. I guess if I spent 6 figures to paint one then I
would want to trailer it too so I have nothing against them, I just don't have
the income to support it. I have stopped going to shows except for a couple
each year and usually attend a Saturday night cruise 2 or 3 times each month.
This year I have been on the Power Tour and will be at Daytona for the Turkey
Fest and a trailer would be a PITA to deal with.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Howard County Fair MD Show

2005-08-08 Thread plgchevelle65

Hi Jim:  Are we talking the Northeast where we have our MCC/ACES Regional Show?  I'm about 90 miles from there.  Once a year there rain or shine & once to Adams Chevrolet is about all I can handle in that direction on the highway.  Elkton's a good drive from central Montgomery County also.  I'm seriously thinking about going to a 5-speed trans for more highway drivability.  Then some of these longer distance shows would be more pleasurable trips.  The Howard County Show was about 15 miles of suburban road.  30 miles to Frederick on 355 is a nice ride.  35 miles to Westminster is nice & 60 miles no highway to Littlestown, PA is a fun trip.  My car is a driver.  4 speed & 3.73 rear.  Hasn't seen a trailer since it came across country from Washington state 4 years ago.  But it doesn't like the rain.  I think I got all the leaks sealed after the MCC/ACES of 2003.  Cleaning a driver show car after being caught in a storm sucks.  Funny how the dust from the dragstrip doen't bother me as much.

Hi Phil,

I live in Elkton and did not get to that show- I got
to the Walmart show on Saturday though, and there was
a decent turnout.

There is also a show at the Walmart in Northeast every
Friday night from 5-?FYI.

[Chevelle-list] Howard County Fair MD Show

2005-08-08 Thread plgchevelle65

Good Morning:  Just curious if anyone in the area or in the MCC went to the Howard County Fair Show yesterday in West Friendship, MD.  What was the condition of the field and did the weather hold up-any rain?   I didn't like the looks of the weather in my area and the Weather Channel didn't look much better for 12-3PM.  I was there last year & it's an open show put on by a group of old F**D guys.  They're freindly, harmless & do a good job with the show.  What was fun about it last year was that the small show area was adjacent to a huge parking lot to get into fair.  So thousands or virtually everyone who came to the Fair had to walk by the show.  Got to meet & talk to alot of people.  Makes for a great day.  Especially if you've ever been to an out of the way/isolated show where much fewer people are even aware a show is going on.

HI John:  I've got a small block 327.  It's beefed up probably around 400HP.  Sounds great with the flowmasters, winds great 6500-7000 & I wouldn't want it any other way.  Doesn't have the torque of a BB but it's fun, fast & reliable.  With proper gears & tires it would turn easy 12's.  However, with a four speed, 3.73 rear & skinny 215/70 redlines it's gone 105mph in the quarter & we won't talk about the ET.  It's primarily a week-end show car.  No disrepect to anyone but you guys can keep your BB's.  I'm lovin' life in a SBC!!!

Brian:  Great to hear all went well.  Only 40%.  How did you ever know?  Remember that VP Cheney had all this done & a stent.  I've had 2 angios & have a stent also.   Since Cheney's thing there has been alot af interest in this field.  They weren't about to let the VP fall over.  All us CAD (coronary artery disease) patients have benefited from the research & findings.  Listen to the Doc., take your meds, eat right, exercise, stay away from fast food, fatty foods & junk.  Once a month pizza with pepperoni & double cheese is OK if you do all the other right stuff.  Like I said B4, the angio was a piece of cake.  Just don't get to where they have to cut you open.  Stay disciplined & committed & you'll be fine for 100 years!!  Good luck with the young family.  Been there, done that.  I'm 57 & my baby is my Chevelle!!!

Hey Brian:  I know I'm late getting in but my system was down yesterday.  By the time you read this you should be home & well & cranking up the machine.  I've had two angioplasty's & a bunch of angiograms.  Not to worry.  Piece of cake.  Better than getting your chest split open.  Arteries clog for many reasons but when it's caught early enough for angioplasty, there's usually no damage to the heart muscle itself.  That's when things get serious.  So listen to your Dr., take your meds, eat right, don't smoke, exercise, love yourself, love your family, & love your Chevelle.  We Chevelle owners got alot to live for.  Many envy us just for owning these things.  So do the right thing & get out there & enjoy!

P.S.  Thought about you all day.  Hope & I'm sure all went well.  I felt the same my first time about 6+ years ago.  Even thought about getting my affairs in order.  Hell, Iv'e had more extreme dental work done!!  Take care & get out there & Live & Love & Drive!!!

Needless to say that we are very happy to have our new bundle of joy!!!  Here are links to a few pictures, first is of Me and Bowen and second is a picture of grandpa FIG with Bowen.

So keep an eye out cause there's a new FIG coming to a show near you... We plan to make the trip with the little guy to Chevelle-a-bration and to the MCC show in June.

Now the wife says I need to get the 70 done so that little Bowen has a car of his own to ride in!

Re: [Chevelle-list] 65 SS for sale

2005-01-31 Thread PLGChevelle65
Just some thoughts guys: I'm sure this is a very nice car and will make some
enthusiast very happy & proud to own & drive. There seems to be alot of 65 SS
283 autos around the country for sale. This was probably the most common combo
of 65. I had an L-79 4speed in 65, two 283 autos in between and have a
modified SB 4 speed 65 SS today. This was the Muscle car era. HP and Speed
were the order of the day. Some people were unhappy with 326 Tempests, 318
Mopars, 352 Fords, you get the idea. They were just as pretty & alittle less
expensive but not much performance. If you follow the ads like I do re 65's, I
tend to see frame off resto's with this combo for $22-40K but they stay on the
market for a while. The 327/300 offered much more classic value & I wish I had
my L-79 today!! I know that everyone has different ideas & desires re this
hobby. Kinda like when the lion tastes it's first meat, IMO thats what speed
and a Muscle car are like. I like all old cars, classics, etc. But if I have
to own one, it better "RUN". Nothing against purists. I can appreciate their
end of the hobby also. No critcism intended. Just thinking out loud. Any
comments & ventilation welcome.
