Sorry, I had some problems with my email account and never got to read any responses to my last couple of posts, so... What kind of goop are people using these days on the bolts from the flexplate to the crank? Does anyone know what size nuts & bolts are used to attach the torque converter to the flexplate? Any suggestions on how to get x-man bolts out that have stripped heads? I will be pulling the enigne out one more time, which would probably be the best time to get these. I also need to get a busted bleeder out of one of the calipers. Do you think an EZ-out would get it? Thanks, John Nasta
Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions - Radiator Alternator
Jim The internal regulated alternator that looks like the standard external reg alternator is the SI model. Easiest thing to do would go to parts store and ask to look at several of the SIs from 73-80 ish Camaro or chevelle. You want one which is "clocked" the same as your original. That means when the mount tabs are aligned similar to your stock unit, the plug in connector on the back is in the same relative position. If you can't find one that is clocked the same, you can buy one thats close and loosen the 3 or 4 small case screws and rotate to get the correct clocking. Ideally if you have an alternator/starter rebuild place nearby the counter person should be able to fix you up. And I believe stock output was 63 Amps. So get at least that much - but as many things in life, bigger is better . You can also consider the CS style alternator with info here: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref14.html I have the aluminum van radiator in a box in the garage, if you want pictures I can send you a link. I bought it when they were first mentioned at Chevelle Tech, got a good deal on a used (never installed) unit. Thats been several years and it seems that since then, there are several other aluminum rads available for similar pricing. I had that same question in the mid 70's when I was an electronics tech school student. I wanted to make my parking lights stay on. So on my '65 I removed the headlight switch to see what I could do. I noticed a small brass shorting bar on the switch's pins. After poking around with a meter I found that I could move a lug in the connector to the pin over the shorting bar. It took working the lug out of the connector with a paper clip and putting it back in the right hole. I added those amber bulbs to the front and my parking lights have come on with the headlights for years. Chuck 65 Malibu 327 - 4 speed do the parking lights also come on by themselves as well?? LOL I did this 30 years ago. I would have noticed. :-) You made the parking lights come on with the headlights. Do the headlights now come on with the parking lights? Dennis McGillis ' 65 Malibu SS-(Soon to be) 350 The name changes with the function. When they're parking lights, they give the vehicle definition at night, while parked. Remember, white lights in the direction of travel. ie: backup lights while in reverse. When the headlights are on they are defined as running lights. In the day, sealed beam headlights would fail quite often. This gives the vehicle definition at night when traveling so it wouldn't be mistaken for a motorcycle. Parking lights / Running lights at the swap of a connector terminal. The tail lights act as parking lights and stay on through both positions of the headlight switch. So simply combining the tail lights with the front parking lights will give you the desired effect. (The shorting bar in my headlight switch made a pin available to connect the tail lights to the parking lights in parallel) Note: This has nothing to do with brake lights / signal lights which is accomplished with complex switching at your signal lever in your steering column and a load sensitive flasher. That's a different animal. Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions and advise
Some one suggested to just run a wire to connect the running lights to the headlights. This would make the head lights come on when the running lights come on because they would back feed the headlights. This would not be a problem unless you wanted to just run your running lights and not your headlights. A simple way to make the running lights stay on when the headlight are on is to wire a relay to power up with the headlight power and hook up a jumper to the running light circuit from a normally open switch leg of the relay. The power for the running lights could come from a jumper off of the same wire that you use to power the relay. Just jump it to the other side of the normally open switch in the relay. This could be done under the dash or even under the hood if you bought a weather proof relay switch. If you need a schematic, I could draw one up real quick and send it to you. You can get a 30 amp relay for 6 or 8 dollars most any where at an auto parts store. As I am thinking about this, I seam to remember that there are 2 separate circuits that power up the running lights on some cars. One for the front and one for the back. If this is the case, then both front and back circuits would have to be tied in to the same place on the relay. - Original Message - From: Clint Hooper To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Tuesday, January 31, 2006 1:05 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions and advise The parking lights go out on my 69 when the headlights are turned on. Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions and advise
The windshield and rear window trim are stainless steel. There is no reason to seal it after buffing. My only suggestion is to hold on tight and work away from the center away from the rotation of the wheel. If it gets away from you, particularly on a high speed buffer you may be looking for a new piece of trim. I turned one into a pretzel. Dan Solomon Never be afraid to try something new. Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions and advise
Mike The mouldings you mentioned are SS. Just hit them with wax when you wax the car. Alum trim would benefit from an occcasional metal polishing. Stainless dosen't have to be waxed, but it will make them clean up more easily and less likely to water spot. I don't know what to tell you on the headlight/parklight issue. On the older Chevelles the park light lit when the switch was in the middle position and went out when the headlights came on. Somefolks like the parking lights to stay on with the headlights. It should be fairly easy to do this by locating the switched wires that control these functions and linking them. Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions on 12 bolt rear...
It depends on what pinion yoke was used on the 12 bolt. There were like 3 or 4 different ones. High performance cars (IE L78, L89, LS6) got a 1350 series pinion yoke which were much bigger than than the normal stock 1310 series. There are also variations of how the caps set in the yoke also. Some had little tabs on the end, some did not. Not all pinion yokes use the 2 straps and bolts either. The one on my 12 bolt uses the U bolts. To be sure on what your application is, best thing to do is measure it with a caliper. I ended up using a junk joint to get mine to work. Tom
Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions on 12 bolt rear...
Can use the same driveshaft. I did a swap last fall and used the same driveshaft. Don't remember any difference in the U-joints either. The U-joint connection to the rear is different (bolts and strap instead of u-bolt and nuts) but the U-joints were the same. Spindles from 86 Caprice wagon (12") , calipers from 75/6 camaro. Hoses too. I agonized over which calipers to use. I didn't know if there were 12" specific calipers. NO! GM made very small changes in calipers over the years. They mount the same, The most significant change, was that I believe (but am still not 1000% sure) that they changed the hose threads to a metric thread about 78.I also had a difficult time with hoses. I'd heard that 72 grand prix hoses are slightly longer, but when I checked part #'s at www.advanceautoparts.com they were the same as for my 72 elky originals. The camaro hoses are a bit longer, but they are tight at full extension. rick On Thu, 14 Mar 2002 01:57:18 EST [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > Did you reuse your stock upper control arms or did you use the after > market > ones? > > - > To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html > To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Get your mind out of the gutter! ;-) Since there has been constant interest in this topic, this is the parts list I compiled *after* I finished doing my conversion to 12" brakes, using Hotchkis stuff. Sorry the readability is not the best. I'm cutting and pasting from an excel spreadsheet I keep. I bought everything at my local Murray's auto parts store (chain), except where noted. 11" brakes from a 70-81 F-body will work too. You use the spindle and all the related parts (rotor, caliper, bearings, dust shields, etc). Everything else is the same. As for the ball joint specifically, my instructions from Hotchkis stated which lower ball joint to buy and that the base had to be machined down x-inches to fit the A-body lower control arm. The alternative was to buy a pre-machined ball-joint directly from Hotchkis for $60. I chose the latter to keep matters simple. Spindles for 12" brakes: Junkyard/parts car '86 Cadillac Full Size (GM B-Body) Rotors for 1LE Camaro: 85994 (NAPA) (12", with proper 5 x 4 3/4" bolt pattern) Inner Wheel Bearing: A3 Outer Wheel Bearing: A6 Grease Seals: ?? Calipers: '86 Caprice (w/ HD brakes) Brake Pads: 86 Caprice (w/ HD brakes) Disc Brake Dust Sheilds: GM 344023, 344024 Master Cylinder: 70 Chevelle w/ Disc Brakes (I'm using it W/O a power-booster) Brake Hoses: Wagner F98912 Caliper Pins: ?? off the rack from Murray's -- very common part Proportioning Valve & Bracket: Master Power Brakes (disc/drum) Lower Ball Joint: Hotchkis 1155 Outer Tie Rod: Moog 2033RL -- note, Hotchkis lists different outer tie-rod numbers for 64-70 cars, and another for 71-72. This is the 64-70 number. Also, if your inner/outers are on backwards, like mine were, it'll really add to the frustration factor until you figure it out. Hope this helps some people out. This is a very do-able swap, although it may seem a little daunting when you start. The results are TOTALLY WORTHWHILE. Re: [Chevelle-List] questions on b-body cars
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List The Firebird and Camaro are F-Bodies and TTBOMK no 2nd- gen ('70-81) Firebird ever came with 12" rotors. The 12" swap is often done on F-Bodies and any writeup I've ever seen has included the swapping in of B-Body spindles. So to sort of answer your question, I'm pretty sure the spindles you're thinking of won't work with the 12" rotors. How's that for a definitive answer? ;^) Brad O. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] questions on b-body cars
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I didn't say but, there is a difference between spindles for 11" & 12" rotors. Do you have a preference? The 11's are much easier to find. You can use earlier than 79 spindles, but I'm not sure which rotors you'd use. These earlier spindles use A2/A6 bearings. Also about 83 the spindles were made lighter & stronger (or so I've read). rick - once more On Sat, 9 Mar 2002 23:44:10 -0600 richard a schaefer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > > On Sat, 9 Mar 2002 23:51:59 EST [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > If anybody can help, > > What year were the b-body cars produced from and > What b-body > spindles > to use for using the global west upper tubular > control > arms or > the > hotchkis control arms? > > > The spindles to use for 12" rotors (1LE camaro) are 79 thru about > 92. > These use the A3/A6 bearings that are needed for the 1LE rotors. > Many > and probably most of these cars had 11" rotors. The spindles to use for 12" rotors (1LE camaro) are 79 thru about 92. These use the A3/A6 bearings that are needed for the 1LE rotors. Many and probably most of these cars had 11" rotors. I found about 6 cars with the 12", all were station wagons. Mine came off an 86 caprice estate wagon. rick schaefer 72 El Camino http://members.home.net/jimmy4/rick1972elky.html TPI 350-700r4 http://chevelles.com/showroom/ricks%20motor%20-L Team Chevelle # 0038 ACES #0140 - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
