Sounds similar to the ones that I am going to put in the 71, not correct but
they will work, mine came out of a late 70s Grand Prix, just a guess without
pics and then I won't be for certain then. Do they have a plastic back?

If the release button is on the side, they are either 67 or 68 seats. Metal
backs would be 67, plastic backs are 68. From the material description, I
would say either Buick or Oldsmobile upholstery.

There was a good article on this in June 07's Hot Rod magazine. As
of 2006 Shell Rotella T oils still had the ZDDP but there are plans
to phase it out of this as well.
Best news in the article was that Quaker State's line of Q Racing
synthetic oils are formulated with all the necessary anti friction
additives to keep our engines alive. We just have to find out where

I emailed Amsoil in July and in reply was told that their diesel,
motorcycle, and racing oils contain higher levels of zinc. How
long this will last for the diesel and cycle oils is unknown but
I imagine the racing oils will be unaffected.

[Chevelle-list] What oil to use.

2007-09-09 Thread Malibu
I just ran across this article and found it interesting. Thought I'd pass it
on. It's a little long but worth the read.

OIL IS KILLING OUR CARS!
By: Keith Ansell, Foreign Parts Positively, Inc.

About a year ago I read about the reduction of zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP) in
the oils supplied with API approval that could affect sliding and high pressure
(EP) friction in our cars. The reduction of these chemicals in supplied oil was
based on the fact that zinc, manganese and/or phosphates reduce the
effectiveness and eventually damage catalytic converters and introduce minute
amounts of pollutants into our atmosphere.

A month or so ago I had a member of the Columbia Gorge MG Club bring a totally
failed camshaft and lifters back to me that had only 900 miles on them!! I
immediately contacted the camshaft regrinder and asked how this could happen.
They were well aware of this problem as they were starting to have many
failures of this type. In the past, the lack of a molybdenum disulfide camshaft
assembly lubricant, at assembly, was about the only thing that could create
this type of problem. My customer has assembled many engines and had lubricated
the camshaft properly and followed correct break in procedures.

This got me on the phone to Delta Camshaft, one of our major suppliers. Then
the bad news came out: It’s today’s “modern” API (American Petroleum Industry)
approved oils that are killing our engines.

Next call: To another major camshaft supplier, both stock and performance
(Crane). They now have an additive for whatever oil you are using during
break-in so that the camshaft and lifters won’t fail in an unreasonably short
period of time. They also suggest using a diesel rated oil on flat tappet
engines.

Next call: To a racing oil manufacturer that we use for the race cars
(Redline). Their response: “We are well aware of the problem and we still use
the correct amounts of those additives in our products”. They continued to tell
me they are not producing API approved oils so they don’t have to test and
comply. Their oils were NOT the “new, improved and approved” ones that destroy
flat tappet engines! “We just build the best lubricants possible”. Sounds
stupid, doesn’t it, New-Approved but inferior products, but it seems to be true
for our cars. To top this off: Our representative from a major supplier of
performance and street engine parts (EPWI) stopped by to “warn us” of the
problem of the NEW oils on flat tappet engines. This was a call that the
representative was making only because of this problem to warn their engine
builders! “The reduction of the zinc, manganese and phosphates are causing very
early destruction of cams and followers”. They are recommending that, for now
at least, there must be a proper oil additive put
in the first oil used on new engines, beyond the liberal use of molydisulfide
assembly lube. They have been told that the first oil is the time the additives
are needed but remain skeptical that the first change is all that is necessary.
Their statement: Use diesel rated oils such as Delo or Rotella that are usually
available at auto stores and gas stations.
This problem is BIG! American Engine Rebuilder's Association (AERA) Bulletin
#TB2333 directly addresses this problem. I had a short discussion with their
engineer and he agreed with all that I had been finding.

OIL IS KILLING OUR CARS!

Next phone call was to a retired engineer from Clevite, a major bearing and
component manufacturer. First surprise was that he restored older British Motor
bikes. The second surprise was that he was “VERY” aware of this problem because
many of the old bikes had rectangular tappets that couldn’t rotate and are
having a very large problem with the new oils. He has written an article for
the British Bike community that verify all the “bad news” we have been finding.
Comp Cams put out “#225 Tech Bulletin: Flat Tappet Camshafts”. They have both
an assembly lube and an oil additive. The telling sentence in the bulletin was
“While this additive was originally developed specifically for break-in
benefits of its long term use. This special blend of additives promotes proper
break-in and protects against premature cam and lifter failure by replacing
some of the beneficial ingredients that the oil companies have been required to
remove from the off the–shelf oil”.

Next question: Now what do we do?

From the camshaft re-grinders (DeltaCam) “Use oils rated for diesel use”, Delo
(Standard Oil product) was named. About the same price as other quality
petroleum based oils. They are not API formulated and have the zinc
dithiophosphate we need in weights we are familiar with.

From the camshaft manufacturer (Crane): “use our additive” for at least the
first 500 miles.

From General Motors (Chevrolet): add EOS, their oil fortifier, to your oil,
it’s only about $12.00 for each oil change for an 8 ounce can (This problem
seems to be something

 OIL IS KILLING OUR CARS!
By: Keith Ansell, Foreign Parts Positively, Inc.

About a year ago I read about the reduction of zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP)
in the oils supplied with API approval that could affect sliding and high
pressure (EP) friction in our cars. The reduction of these chemicals in
supplied oil was based on the fact that zinc, manganese and/or phosphates
reduce the effectiveness and eventually damage catalytic converters and
introduce minute amounts of pollutants into our atmosphere.

A month or so ago I had a member of the Columbia Gorge MG Club bring a
totally failed camshaft and lifters back to me that had only 900 miles on
them!! I immediately contacted the camshaft regrinder and asked how this
could happen. They were well aware of this problem as they were starting to
have many failures of this type. In the past, the lack of a molybdenum
disulfide camshaft assembly lubricant, at assembly, was about the only thing
that could create this type of problem. My customer has assembled many
engines and had lubricated the camshaft properly and followed correct break
 in procedures.

This got me on the phone to Delta Camshaft, one of our major suppliers.
Then the bad news came out: It's today's modern API (American Petroleum
Industry) approved oils that are killing our engines.

Next call: To another major camshaft supplier, both stock and performance
(Crane). They now have an additive for whatever oil you are using during
break-in so that the camshaft and lifters won't fail in an unreasonably

You are correct with regard to roller cams. There is an excellent article in
the August 30th issue of Old Cars Weekly titled New oils and old cars. Look at
the front of the oil container for the SAE donut. The current oils are API
service rated SM and this is the problem oil. SL and earlier oils were backward
compatatible and could be used in earlier vehicles. The article said to also
avoid any oils that say Energy Conserving. The article further stated that
you can use SM-type oil by adding 1/2 ounce of General Motors EOS (engine oil
supplement) for each quart of SM=type oil to improve anti-wear characteristics.
It also said don't add more EOS as to much is not good either.

Interesting I just put an engine in last weekend and had some problems.
 Two
sets of engine mounts one from NAPA and one from Autozone, different
heights on them, both were supposed to be for a 350 with 350 frame
mounts. The one set was not wide enough I guess.

You can't use just any FRAME mount such as a 69 in a 67 chassis. The
aftermarket has readily available for the 66-67 chassis, 68-70 use
different frame mounts. Engine mounts with the locking tabs are
 compatible, however.

Like most rumor's, it's false. Remember there are FRAME mounts and

mounts have no more in common with the 307 mounts than they do any

Interesting I just put an engine in last weekend and had some problems. Two
sets of engine mounts one from NAPA and one from Autozone, different heights
on them, both were supposed to be for a 350 with 350 frame mounts. The one
set was not wide enough I guess.

You can't use just any FRAME mount such as a 69 in a 67 chassis. The
aftermarket has readily available for the 66-67 chassis, 68-70 use different
frame mounts. Engine mounts with the locking tabs are compatible, however.

Like most rumor's, it's false. Remember there are FRAME mounts and
ENGINE mounts. The 307 didn't appear until 1968 and 6-cyl frame
mounts have no more in common with the 307 mounts than they do any
others. You'll have to change your frame mounts for a V8 anyway. A
quick parts search online shows the 305 taking a different engine
mount than a 67 small block - may just be a style difference, can't
say. I'd first get the correct frame mounts then ask the parts guy
for engine mounts for the 305 and see if they fit the frame mounts.

ok ok lol mine starts off as my father is a lawyer not
a car enthuiest so he bilt a law office in a shopping center with a auto pts
store in it back in the early 70"s i was like 7 yrs old so they got tired of
me hanging around so they gave me a job makin 50 cets a day (enough for my
drinks )but i started learning and by 12 years was sellin parts to you older
guys over the counter than in 1980 my parents got divorced and we moved
but close to a body shop so i learned that i could play with cars and
wash it off in the evning so by the time i was 15 we had found a 69 mach
1 in a junkyard and a 428 scj out of (belive it or not) a 500 gt the car was
trashed but motor was good well we had it ready by my 16th bday and needless
to say i got it took from me and sold for having too much fun. well i became a
very young well experianced and fairly educated bodyman ,i was working in a
shop in southrn va restoring cars for a moron and was working on a 67 ss 396
conv.calli car with pwr windows and all the goodies i was talking to the owner
(who came by almost every day) and he was so impresed with the care i was
taking for his classic shevelle that he told me of a 72 ss chevelle conv.and
the price he said he could get it for me for around 5000 it needed restoring
but was a one owner and all orig well i had no money with new marriage and
kids poping out well all of sudden the owner passed away and left his
estate to be handeled by another guy i restored manny of his cars for and he
arranged it to were i could get the car for what the owner had in it a measly
$1250. lol so i still was broke but the 67 chevelle owner bought it and let me
pay him 25 bucks a week helped me get a top on it and i drove it for ten
years every day till i got side swiped now finnaly i have a garage
in ga and am currenty restoring the car i have loved for years i will
never sell it and it will be handed down to my son along with my chopper
i have been in tough times and never could bring my self to sell i love
my chevelle and in this story it shows that chevelle owners are a

1972 Malibu 307 - modified and in shambles (see story below)
2000 Harley XLH-883 - Never finished (if you have one, you know what I am talking about)
1995 Honda Accord (not my choice)
1993 BMW 525iTx (my German beater car - selling in 2 months)

Short story---
Car was bought by my family for my sister to drive in high school back in 1981 from the original owners. Car was driven stock in its green metallic paint (not original), black vinyl top, white and black bench seat interior, 307 2bbl with TH350 shift on the tree. My sister made lots of good friends, but a lot of good enemies also. The green paint was keyed so bad and the vinyl top destroyed in about 1984, so she repainted it Corvette yellow and stripped the vinyl top. She sold it to me in 1987 for the grand total of $600 and I drove it for about 6 months in this configuration. First to go was the bench seat and column shift just because I was in high school and needed to be cool. The paint was old (she banged it up a bit) and the 307 had a knock. I scored a 327 from a local builder and had a local body shop (fellow gun club member) reshoot the yellow paint and add some black racing stripes (again, had to be cool). I grenaded the 327 6 months later (builder used incorrect bearings), chunked down the cash necessary to build a hot 350 for the car, and had the tranny reworked with a custom torque converter and shift kit in college. I drove the car in that configuration until 1997 when I went active duty, and the car was left at my father's house in central California with every intention of fetching it ASAP for a rebuild.
Well, 9 years later I am still trekking the globe for Uncle Sam. A new wife, new car, two small children and one small paycheck have relegated my car to living life under my Dad's rear deck buried under a blue tarp that I replace every year or two when I am home. After 4 years in Germany I finally have a little money saved up, and the blessing of my wife (we went on our first date in that car) to rebuild it right.
Plan for the car? A emblemless pro-touring g-machine with a LS1 402 stroker, 6 speed T56, 4-wheel disk brakes, and bright Corvette yellow paint with black racing stripes. Estimated time of completion: 4 years from start (with a lot of luck and a winning lottery ticket).

Thanks for letting me rant - it is nice to have a group of folks to chat about my car with.

Rinky,
Don't feel bad about not getting back to the old girl. Life throws us many
curves. Plans made in highschool/college many times vanish. The good thing
is you've held on to yours and the time will come when you can proudly put
her to the streets. Sounds like you have a solid plan.
I bought my 69 L78 when I was in highschool in 1975. Pulled the big block
and stuffed it in a corner along with the wheels, steering wheel, console,
you get the idea :) Put in a high revving 327 so I could race the locals.
Six motors and 4 years later I put her in storage at my uncles farm to go to
college. Twenty years later I finally came back to my home town opened shop
and got her out for a frame off restore. Actually found all the parts I had
pulled in 75. My dad had found them buried deep in a corner of an old shed
he had torn down in the 80's and took them to my uncles, storing them neatly
next to the Che.
Long story short, starting my own business has been quite time consuming
and 6 years later she's only about half way finished but I get a little bit
done each week. It has become my way to relax, my personal time and I enjoy
every minute as I inch closer to driving her again. Wow this is beginning to
sound like a love story, but in reality I guess it is. I wouldn't trade or
sell her for the world.

Everyone is telling stories so I guess I will tell mine to finish off
2005! I had a failed attempt to buy a 67SS in Oklahoma City on Ebay.
I lost my down payment of $2k. I had almost given up on finding a Chevelle
and one Sat. morning there was an add in the paper for a 67 Malibu in a city
close to me. It was an amazingly low price so I called and said DON'T SELL
THE CAR UNTIL I LOOK AT IT!!! This guy had been building cars for a long
time. It was a fully restored 67 Malibu but he had built it to be a driver
drag car. I wrote a check in less than 5 min. after seeing the car.
I have since put on all the emblems, new bumpers, grills, etc. Just the
detail stuff.

I knew little or nothing about the mechanics of the car as he had kept no
paperwork. It has a 350 400hp engine. I could not figure out what
the tranny was as it acts like 4:11's in 1st, 2nd, 3rd with a huge 4th gear
where it does about 2200 rpm at 75 mph. I took off the solid aluminum
Einke rims and put on Cragars a few months ago. The car looks sweet!
I called the original builder and said I would give the rims back at no cost
since he gave me such a sweet deal on the car. He came by and told me more
about the car than I ever knew. It has 3:08 rear gears. The tranny
is a Saginaw out of a truck. That explains the short first gears and the
tall last gear. It is not original Chevelle parts but it is a great set
up. I can light them up all the way through 3rd gear and still casually
cruise down the freeway.

The most important thing is that I have a beautiful 67 sitting in my garage
that I drive as often as possible!

Rinky, Don't feel bad about not getting back to the
old girl. Life throws us manycurves. Plans made in highschool/college many
times vanish. The good thingis you've held on to yours and the time will
come when you can proudly puther to the streets. Sounds like you have a
solid plan.I bought my 69 L78 when I was in highschool in 1975.
Pulled the big blockand stuffed it in a corner along with the wheels,
steering wheel, console, you get the idea :) Put in a high revving 327 so I
could race the locals.Six motors and 4 years later I put her in storage at
my uncles farm to go tocollege. Twenty years later I finally came back to
my home town opened shopand got her out for a frame off restore. Actually
found all the parts I hadpulled in 75. My dad had found them buried deep
in a corner of an old shedhe had torn down in the 80's and took them to my
uncles, storing them neatlynext to the Che. Long story
short, starting my own business has been quite time consumingand 6 years
later she's only about half way finished but I get a little bitdone each
week. It has become my way to relax, my personal time and I enjoyevery
minute as I inch closer to driving her again. Wow this is beginning

ok ok lol mine starts off as my father is a lawyer not a
car enthuiest so he bilt a law office in a shopping center with a auto pts store
in it back in the early 70"s i was like 7 yrs old so they got tired of me
hanging around so they gave me a job makin 50 cets a day (enough for my drinks
)but i started learning and by 12 years was sellin parts to you older guys over
the counter than in 1980 my parents got divorced and we moved but
close to a body shop so i learned that i could play with cars and wash it off in
the evning so by the time i was 15 we had found a 69 mach 1 in a junkyard
and a 428 scj out of (belive it or not) a 500 gt the car was trashed but motor
was good well we had it ready by my 16th bday and needless to say i got it took
from me and sold for having too much fun. well i became a very young well
experianced and fairly educated bodyman ,i was working in a shop in southrn va
restoring cars for a moron and was working on a 67 ss 396 conv.calli car with
pwr windows and all the goodies i was talking to the owner (who came by almost
every day) and he was so impresed with the care i was taking for his classic
shevelle that he told me of a 72 ss chevelle conv.and the price he said he could
get it for me for around 5000 it needed restoring but was a one owner and all
orig well i had no money with new marriage and kids poping out well all of
sudden the owner passed away and left his estate to be handeled by another
guy i restored manny of his cars for and he arranged it to were i could get the
car for what the owner had in it a measly $1250. lol so i still was broke but
the 67 chevelle owner bought it and let me pay him 25 bucks a week helped me get
a top on it and i drove it for ten years every day till i got side
swiped now finnaly i have a garage in ga and am currenty restoring the car
i have loved for years i will never sell it and it will be handed down to
my son along with my chopper i have been in tough times and never
could bring my self to sell i love my chevelle and in this story it shows
that chevelle owners are a different breed

A friend of mine found a Tri-Power Olds Intake Casting #393238 with
carbs in the trunk of an old car. This appears to be for a 1966 442.
It's in pretty rough shape. Trying to find out how rare it is and what
it's worth. Can anyone put me in the right direction?

From what the previous owner said, it was a rebuilt 65. From
what I have heard they puta Edlebrock cam kit to bustthe HP
to325 or 350. The numbers on the block is a J serious, which
tells me it was a 283. So I might have bought a good story, but
it runs well. It does have a cam for sure, the performer intake,
and 4 barrel. Wish I know it was really a 327. some day
might have to open the engine up and really see what I have.

This car is not a numbers car, but it sure does look nice.
But not super tricked out.

64 El Camino, 327, 325 HP, Muncie 4 speed. Love the rush of the cam

the main reason I purchased a second 64 El Camino.

Sold 64 El Camino, 283 when I was in High school.
Sold 71 El Camino SS..friend totaled it.

By the way any one know how I can change out the floor shifter from
a hurst, thathas a 2 bolt, vertical pattern to a Muncie style that
is 2 bold horizontal pattern. I like the S shape shifter I had
with my first 64 El Camino. With the T at the top.

you know what I am talking about)

1995 Honda Accord (not my choice)

1993 BMW 525iTx (my German beater car - selling in 2
months)

Short story---

Car was bought by my family for my sister to drive in high
school back in 1981 from the original owners. Car was driven stock in its
green metallic paint (not original), black vinyl top, white and black bench
seat interior, 307 2bbl with TH350 shift on the tree. My sister made lots
of good friends, but a lot of good enemies also. The green paint was
keyed so bad and the vinyl top destroyed in about 1984, so she repainted it
Corvette yellow and stripped the vinyl top. She sold it to me in 1987 for
the grand total of $600 and I drove it for about 6 months in this
configuration. First to go was the bench seat and column shift just
because I was in high school and needed to be cool. The paint was old
(she banged it up a bit) and the 307 had a knock. I scored a 327 from a
local builder and had a local body shop (fellow gun club member) reshoot the
yellow paint and add some black racing stripes (again, had to be cool). I
grenaded the 327 6 months later (builder used incorrect bearings), chunked down
the cash necessary to build a hot 350 for the car, and had the tranny reworked
with a custom torque converter and shift kit in college. I drove the car in
that configuration until 1997 when I went active duty, and the car was left at
my father's house in central California with every
intention of fetching it ASAP for a rebuild.

Well, 9 years later I am still trekking the globe for Uncle
Sam. A new wife, new car, two small children and one small paycheck have
relegated my car to living life under my Dad's rear deck buried under a
blue tarp that I replace every year or two when I am home. After 4 years
in Germany I finally have a little money saved
up, and the blessing of my wife (we went on our first date in that car) to
rebuild it right.

Plan for the car? A emblemless pro-touring g-machine
with a LS1 402 stroker, 6 speed T56, 4-wheel disk brakes, and bright Corvette
yellow paint with black racing stripes. Estimated time of completion: 4
years from start (with a lot of luck and a winning lottery ticket).

Thanks for letting me rant - it is nice to have a
group of folks to chat about my car with.

Flame suit on for admitting I have a Honda.

Re: [Chevelle-list] what year is yours?

2005-12-29 Thread Gene Smith

Hi,
I have many Chevelles, most of which
are in the raw material stage. In order of year I have

66 Malibu with ss emblems which were put on long
enough ago to make the car a fake super sport
67 SS car, a true 138 car my dad bought in 69,
will be my next project and will be a six speed fuel injected big
block
67 Malibu I bought from a guy whose house burnt
down, will always be an emblemless car w/ a small block, I plan on mini tubbing
it. I drove it for a few years with a 383 in it. It was a fast beater type of
car.
67 Malibu hard top which will probably become a
convertible since I have what is left from a 67 conv. car to change one over.
That is if I don't make the 66 a clone ss convertible, seeing as how I have had
two actual 66 138 converts slip thru my fingers in years past
69 Malibu, my current project car which will be
set up as a driver, with air and power windows, doors, trunk, etc. All handles,
locks, marker lightsand emblems will be shaved. It has along
rod383 and turbo 350 which I want to add a gear vendors overdrive to
someday.
A 70 six cylinder car that I want to build as a
phantom 70 heavy Chevy. It will be a 400 small block, 4 speed car built as if GM
had builta road runner type chevelle, i.e. no options, rubber floor mat,
radio delete, manual brakes, etc with a small block.
A second 70 which will probably end up being a
parts car to the heavy Chevy phantom.

The non Chevelles I own include but are
not limited to a 55 Chevy truck with a heavy chop, 35 Chevy 5 window coupe, 73
Plymouth duster (how the hell did that get in there!?! ) 55 210 car, 84 s-15
converted to v-8 power, a 78 w/80 front end 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive, 79 sunbird
Pontiac that either needs a turbo added to the iron duke or a small block
transplant and three different Olds 88/98 derivatives that serve as daily
driver status.

That is why I started the reproduction
retail business, to build some of these cars as promotional vehicles and to be
able to get parts for them cheap, as well as use them as tax write
offs!

1964 Malibu, hope to finish restoring some day. Have a hard time taking it off of the road long enough to do the paint prep and paint.

63 Nova - 350/350, TH200-4r, TCI subframe, etc.
70 Nova - hope to be completed by 06 Power Tour.
70 Skylark - started restoration but lost interest, 37k mile car will get
finished someday but I wish it was a Chevelle instead of a Buick. Guess I
should finish and sell. So much to do, so little time.

Title: Message

 I have a 67SS that I bought in
1971. Drove it in high school and a few years after. A friend blew up the 396
and never got around to paying for it. Aftera fewyears I thought I
wanted to drive it again so I put in a 428 Pontiac motor and it just didn't run
good enough so I lost interest. Then I thought I wanted to drag race it so I put
in some 4.56's and a pretty hot 327 and played with it a few times on the street
but never made it to a strip. Then around 77 or so I put it in the back of my
shop in New Mexicoand it stayed there till about 4 years ago and I thought
it would be cool to get it out and restore it back to original for 30
myyear class reunion (2003). Took the body off and blasted the frame and
got all the suspension and running gear allrebuilt andlooking better
than new. Got the underside of the body looking show quality and back on the
frame with new body mounts. Then about a yearinto the restoI got
kicked out of thehouse and had to put the old chevelle in a storage shed
till I can get me another shop here in Houston. Maybe this spring I will get
back on it.
