Thanks guys. Yeah, he got hosed. I changed his points on Monday and he
definitely didn't need a cap or rotor. They looked fairly new. I also
advised him to switch to HEI and unfortunately for what he paid he
could more than likely have had that done. I will let him know what it
takes to make the switch.

Quoting Tom Rightler :

$650 to do all that??? That's a tad ridiculous. Converting a Mopar to
an electronic ignition isn't as easy as doing a GM car. You have to get
a new engine harness for it for specifically for an electronic ignition
which Year One has. That's who I got it from for my Charger. The
distributor is easy...just get one for a 1970 Dodge Charger. You also
need the electronic control box, voltage regulator, and ballast resistor
for a 1970 Charger also.

Not a Mopar man ,but seems to me if you wanted to ditch the points and the rest
of the distributor is good maybe you should consider an MSD box or similar
unit.  Would be a good way to eliminate the points and get a hotter spark all
in one shot.  That's what I did on my "69" Chevelle and haven't regretted it
yet.

Hi all,

I have a good friend who has been having problems with his 1969

hard to find a place that sells the points & condensor. We changed

he's stuck again. Luckily he has AAA.

So, does anyone know of a good drop-in HEI distributor for Mopar like
so many of us have for our Chevys?

Thanks,

I am designing and building my own motor plates/mounts. Does anyone know

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: frame question

2009-04-27 Thread Dale
I have a Hollander's manual for Chevelles. For 68-72 Chevelles there is a
*type* they number as 1943. For Chevelles this fits 68-70 2-dr (exc.
Pickup) & 1971 & 1972 H.T. & Conv. Chevelles. Quite a few A-bodies are
listed under type 1943.

Buick Special '68 2 Dr., Conv.

Buick Special '69 2 Dr. exc. GS400 H.T.
Buick Special '70 2 Dr., Conv

Buick Special '71-72 2 Dr. exc. 8-455

Chevelle '68-70 2 Dr. exc. Pickup

Chevelle '71-72 2 Dr., H.T. & Conv.

Olds F85 '68 2 Dr., Conv.

Olds F85 '69 2 Dr.

Olds F85 '70 2 Dr. Conv.

Olds F85 '71-72 2 Dr.

Tempest '68 2 Dr., Conv.

Tempest '69 2 Dr.

Tempest '70 2 Dr., Conv., exc. 8-455

Tempest '70 2 Dr., H.T., exc. 8-455
Tempest '70 2 Dr., Sdn

Tempest '71-72 2 Dr., exc. 8-455

The convertibles probably all have boxed frames but other than that are
probably the same basic frame. Don't know why the Buick GS400 or (I assume
V8 w/455 engine) in Buick & Tempest are different.

I scanned the two pages in the book if you like and will mail them to you
offline.may be easier to make sense than the pieces I chopped out.

Convertible frames are boxed from the factory. The others are not. Where is
it rusted out? Do you have it out of the car?

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: The Best Radiator Type

2009-04-27 Thread Jim H. Thompson
A clean one. Copper or aluminum makes little difference if it is the correct
size. Flushing the cooling system and replacing a thermostat is a good
start.

If the hoses are 4 years old replace. If the fan is belt driven make sure it
is not slipping. Again if it is a few years old replace. If you have an
electric fan put a thermometer in the radiator and see when the fan kicks
on.

[Chevelle-list] OT: Ford & MC fans' key tip

2008-03-25 Thread John Nasta

This just came across my radar screen...

If you have one of those Fords with the double-sided keys (identical
cuts on both sides), the lock only needs one side of the key to work.
The other side is only there so you can flip the key and still have it
work. You can put your ignition & doors cut on one side and your trunk
& glove cut on the other side and have only one key that does
everything instead of two separate keys. Just cut a notch or something
in one side so you know which side has which cut. Also works for
double-sided motorcycle keys, which is how I found out about it. One
side for the ignition and the other for the gas cap.

Since it's a slow night...

Does anybody else have the Flowmaster 2008 calendar? The Feb car is the
fully restored Monkees 1966 GTO. What a bizarre car. The nose is like a
big wind scoop and I don't think that convertible top was meant to travel
over 15mph. I like the headers though.

I wonder what they did w/ the inside of the trunk and the area behind the
rear seat. Looks like there might actually be a third seat, or at least
it's padded out.

Two "Monkee Mobiles" were made. The one on the calendar appears to be #1.
This car went on tour w/ the band and was apparently abandoned in
Australia at the end of the tour. It apparently re-surfaced in 1992 at a
government foreclosure auction in Puerto Rico, and sold for the minimum
bid of $5,000.

#2 had a yellow/orange color around the grill rather than silver, and the
same yellow around the headlights, rather than the body color.

You can see pix of both here:

#1. This car went on tour w/ the band and was apparently abandoned in
Australia at the end of the tour. It apparently re-surfaced in 1992 at
a government foreclosure auction in Puerto Rico, and sold for the
minimum bid of $5,000.

#2 had a yellow/orange color around the grill rather than silver, and
the same yellow around the headlights, rather than the body color.

Yeah, you'll get sludge if you mix orange and green. Also, the new
stuff is not meant for the radiators and heater cores of the old cars.
Stick to the good old green stuff for the classic cars.

Appliance made wheels as well as headers and maybe more stuff.
Back-in-the-day, Appliance headers featured heavier tubes, individual
flanges for the head mounting and 4-bolt square collectors (as opposed to
the 3-bolt triangular type). Very good quality headers too if IIRC. Can't
remember exactly all the wheels they made but they did make a very nice
Buick wire wheel knockoff. I think (think mind you) they sold out to Mr.

I got tired of messing with it, and ended up rebuilding the Champion rebuilt

the screws securing the float bowl assy to the throttle body assy were fairly
loose. In any event, all problems are now gone. No more smoking or sputtering,
and my gas mileage is up to 19mpg.

I certainly agree with all the comments about using Publisher. It is
not a web site development tool, and at least with the 2003 version,
produces some awful .html code, and the pages are poor at best.

And to be clear from my end, I'm not really "choosing" to use
Publisher. I've been asked to electronically publish a school
newsletter, and they build their newsletter in Publisher. :-) So,
Publisher it is. I just want to see what I can do other than convert it
to PDF (which does work quite well).

My choice of web development tools is NetObjects Fusion
(www.netobjects.com). I've been using it for about 10 years, and really
like it.
Not that I'm a "big time" web developer...

Excellent advice concerning learning at least a little bit about HTML code,
even for a novice. Another thing to think about is that like a body or
paint shop, having professional tools doesn't always mean professional
results. Very professionally looking web sites have been done with
relatively low powered tools, even notepad as Kurt mentioned, and very poor
sites done with high powered tools like FP/Expression Web or Dreamweaver.

I like the first link's use of 'flipping wheelchairs, which seems a bit
insensitive to those with a wheelchair-bound disability. With what they/he
advertises he might make the site a bit more 508 compliant for those with
sight disabilities as well by using 'alt' tags on all the graphic images.

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: Microsoft Publisher 2007

I don't want to sound too elitist, but my official opinion on the best web
site production tool is a knowledgeable and experienced web designer. There
are countless reasons for this opinion which would probably come off more
like a sales pitch, so I'll bite my tongue on that side of things and just
talk about the tools themselves.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. The act of "marking up" a
document goes back to the 13th century and the letterpress. Publishers would
"mark up" a document so the letterpress operator would know how to lay out
the document. HTML is just the electronic version of the same activity.

In HTML, every "tag" has a special purpose. For instance, the paragraph tag
delineates what is a paragraph. The text within and is the
paragraph.

Tools such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage or whatever tries to make an educated
guess about what the user is trying to do. So, let's say you want to
create a heading at the top of the page. Using Dreamweaver, you can just
manually make the text large and bold. In reality, you should be using
for that, rather than playing games with the font. To the layperson, as
long as the text is big and bold, that's all that matters. There's a lot
more to it than that, though.

So, back to the tools, all of these tools make a guess about what you're
really after, and they really need to perform a balancing act between doing
what you say and doing what you mean. For most, like Frontpage, NetObjects
Fusion, etc. they really spew out a lot of terrible code that can cause a
lot of problems with cross-platform compatibility and maintenance of the
site. When it comes to Dreamweaver, it'll still let you hang yourself, but
it doesn't litter the code any more than you ask it to.

My best advice, regardless of what tool you buy, is that you spend some time
learning more about HTML. With proper knowledge of HTML, you'll be able to
make the tool work for you, rather than you working for it.

One more thing: If this is a website for a business, you really need to have
a professional do it. Stanford University's Web Credibility Project
(http://credibility.stanford.edu/) has been performing a long term study
into credibility on the web. They've found that the quality of the site has
a direct relationship to how much credibility a visitor ascribes to a site.

To illustrate this point, go to these two sites:

http://www.istal.com/smoke/

http://www.webaccessstrategies.com

Both organizations perform the same types of services. Which one are you
likely to regard as more professional and more likely to produce quality
work?

Just some food for thought.

Actually, Karl suggested Dreamweaver; I use Expression Web :*) In any
event. I tried Dreamweaver a couple of years ago and I guess after having
been with FrontPage, the predecessor to Expression Web, since version 1 I
was more use to the look-and-feel of FrontPage and made the move up to
Expression Web much easier. I never could get the hang of Dreamweaver.

If one were doing large sites professionally like Kurt, Dreamweaver would
probably be a viable solution. For me, all of my sites are done with
Expression Web. Kinda like choices in a Chevelle, eh?

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: Microsoft Publisher 2007

2007-10-02 Thread Karl Groves

I honestly think you may be better off getting a web site specific piece of
software if you're going to do a web site. Publisher might do if that's all
you have but something like Expression Web creates better (IMO) code. When
you 'publish' a Publisher .pub file it does create an .htm/.html file but
it's so bloated with extra MS code it's difficult to maintain. But, like
old axiom "When all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a
nail."

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: Microsoft Publisher 2007

2007-10-02 Thread Karl Groves
As someone who makes web sites professionally, I can tell you that without a
shadow of a doubt, Microsoft Publisher is absolutely the last thing I would
use to create an HTML document. The markup it creates is hideous and
everytime I see or hear about an HTML document created with Publisher, I
want to gouge my eyes out.

I write everything in Notepad, but I understand not everyone has the code-fu
I have. If you're going to buy something, buy Dreamweaver. As web tools go,
these tools are only as good as the person using them, but in the hands of a
layperson, Dreamweaver is far less likely to create as much of a mess than
most anything else.

Hey Mikefunny you're posting about this. I was just looking into buying
Publisher yesterday. I have 2003 here at work. I want to make a webpage for
my side buisness...however I dont think my work would appreciate me using
thier stuff for another buisness. How do you like using Publisher? Are you
saying that on 2003, when you create a webpage, you cant upload it to a site

I know this is way off topic, but

I have a need to confirm that MS Publisher 2007 will or will not properly
convert to .html.
Would anyone have MS Publisher 2007 that would allow me to send them a .pub
file to convert, then send it back to me as .html in a .zip file?
If it works out, I'll just buy Publisher, but don't want to spend the money
only to find it doesn't convert any better than the 2003 version that I
already have.
And the 2007 trial version doesn't let me publish as .html.

No Brad, I didn't get a chance to mess with it this past weekend. I did get a
complete United Delco service manual on the Monojet at
www.carburetor-manual.com which is very thorough. I need to sit down and read
it. I will let you know what I find.

If you guys are ever in need of service manuals to rebuild carbs, trannys, etc.
www.carburetor-manual.com is a very good resource. Very reasonably priced. They
offer both original maunuals or PDF files you can download for a few bucks so
you can have it immediately. Tell Tim I sent ya.

The original air cleaner is long gone. It now has a 9 inch round by 3 inch
tall K&N filter on it. The air filter has no ppes or lines going to it. I have
oe vacuum line going from the carb (the one facing forward) going to the
distributor, and that's it. I will look into the choke pulloff, etc.

Thanks for your reply Brad. Yes, a half ton.

The carb is an Auto Zone rebuilt that I recently installed. I replaced the
points, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condenser and coil. Of course new doesn't
automatically equal good, but all items listed seems to be functional. Can an
old and possibly degraded distributor cause this type of symptom? The dwell is
running at 31 degrees and steady, which should be close enough. When I rev it
up with the timing light on, the mark climbs up and off the gauge so the
advance curve at least starts off correctly... The plugs are running gaps of
40.

Half ton, right? My dad had that very same truck from '72 to '85.
The shift linkage went bad in the column and he converted it to a
Hurst "Indy" floor shifter. I used to take it out on the back roads,

Yes, the timing tabs are marked in 2-degree increments.

I checked my Haynes book and it too defers to the underhood sticker. 4 BTDC
is as good a place as any to start, and if it runs fine then try adding a
little more advance until performance degrades. If you use it more as a
driver and less as a hauler the original factory specs may be allowing for
some engine loading that your truck doesn't see.

Sounds like a carb issue, especially if it's been years since the Monojet's
been gone through. If possible, put a vacuum gauge on the engine and
observe what it reads in the RPM range in question. Is the rest of the ignition
system up to snuff?

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT - GMC TRUCK HELP

2007-09-11 Thread Shawn Price

Larry,
It's sounding like maybe the accelerator pump is putting too much
of a shot into the carb when you step on it. If it runs fine above
that RPM range and you think the main jetting is fine, then see if
you can reduce the amount the acc pump puts out. I don't have one of
those carbs in front of me, so I can't offer any more useful
information on how to change it.

degrees and steady, which should be close enough. When I rev it up
with the timing light on, the mark climbs up and off the gauge so
the advance curve at least starts off correctly... The plugs are
running gaps of 40.

As a youth, I was taught black smoke means to much fuel, which
means not enough air or too much fuel at those RPMs Is there an
adjustment for the fuel/air mixture off idle on these carbs?

Half ton, right? My dad had that very same truck from '72 to '85.
The shift linkage went bad in the column and he converted it to a
Hurst "Indy" floor shifter. I used to take it out on the back roads,
wind it up, pop the clutch, and the back end would bounce around
like crazy. ;^)

Yes, the timing tabs are marked in 2-degree increments.

I checked my Haynes book and it too defers to the underhood
sticker. 4 BTDC
is as good a place as any to start, and if it runs fine then try
adding a
little more advance until performance degrades. If you use it more
as a
driver and less as a hauler the original factory specs may be
allowing for

some engine loading that your truck doesn't see.

Sounds like a carb issue, especially if it's been years since the
Monojet's

been gone through. If possible, put a vacuum gauge on the engine and
observe what it reads in the RPM range in question. Is the rest of
the ignition

system up to snuff?

Thanks for your reply Brad. Yes, a half ton.

The carb is an Auto Zone rebuilt that I recently installed. I replaced the
points, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condenser and coil. Of course new doesn't
automatically equal good, but all items listed seems to be functional. Can an

[Chevelle-list] OT - GMC TRUCK HELP

2007-09-11 Thread Larry Shouse
I'm hoping some of you my be able to help with a couple of questions I have
concerning my 1970 GMC truck. It has a straight 6 250 CID engine with a 3 speed
manual tranny and a 1 barrel MonoJet carb.

First question is on timing. My service manual says to refer to the sticker
under the hood for timimg, but my sticker is long gone. I did find one of my
old tune-up guides from the 70's that says on L6 Chevelles, it should be 0
degrees on automatics and 4 degrees BTDC on manual tranny vehicles... Should I
go with 4 degrees BTDC? Also, each mark on the timing guide by the flywheel on
these things is 2 degrees right?

Second question is on my carb. While accelerating normally, it starts to spit
and sputter at around 2000 rpms, then clears up at around 2500 rpms or so.
While it's doing this, I see black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Before and
after this rpm range, my truck doesnt smoke. Well, it does at red line but
that's gray smoke and I thing an entirely different issue with this tired old
engine. Do you think in the 2000 to 2500 rpm range, it's getting too much fuel?
If so, how do I fix it?

Thanks for your help guys.
