2007-05-01 Thread Brad Waller
I may have one. This is for the small (10.4") clutch/flywheel, right? I
took off a 3858403 when I swapped to the larger clutch and I think I still
have the old one. It is in pretty good shape with some really minor cracks.
Assuming it is still in the garage, here are pictures I too of it after I
removed it from the Corvette:

Bellhousing question

Last
night I was ready to install my BB finally into my 69 Chevelle, come to find
out that the bellhousing does not fit (TOO SMALL) I had this bellhousing off my
350 which fit with the old flywheel which is about 12 inches in radius.

I
installed a new and correct flywheel 14 inches in radius . I was told
that I need a 621 bellhousing, is this correct. If so does anyone on the list
have one for sale?

Thanks
Joe P.

You can use the truck bellhousing (much cheaper) and get a spacer for the transmission bearing retainer.  I got one from the following and it works great!
Dennis Wayne McLeodToolcraft Co., Inc.Cell 502-558-1043Office 502-222-5764FAX 502-222-5942
I think that the total including S & H was $28.00 for the spacer ring.  He really does good work and is very easy to deal with.  Tell him I gave you his info if you talk to him or email him.

You don't need to have a 621 bellhousing, you can use a 444 casting as
well.  Dig deep if you are after a 621 housing.  You can use a truck
bellhousing also, you just need a bushing on the bearing retainer since the hole
is a bit bigger.

You're welcome.

I also just found that you can get brand new GM alum bellhousings from
Ground Up http://www.ss396.com (2nd hand info, 3rd hand info to you).
And Ebay has several listings for bellhousings (which I did confirm,
and cheap too!).

Bear in mind there are 6 different part #s for GM auto bellhousings.
I have a buddy who may be sending me the details, and I'll post it all
on a page.

The typical pick-up truck (1/2 ton, 3/4 ton) with a 4sp behind a
typical SBC/BBC have a larger bearing retainer opening (5") compared to
the cars (4 5/8").

http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/GmTruckBellhousingInfo.pdf shows
more detail, including pics. These bell housings can be used, but will
require a special made adapter ring to accommodate the larger opening
which in turns requires machining to your bearing retainer to "lock"
the adapter ring in place.

Beyond that, I'm pretty sure the truck bells are suitable for use in
our cars.

Hope that helps a bit.

No, the truck bell won't work directly.  You'll for sure need an
adapter ring.
Here's some more info:

See item #30, and notice the 2 links.

McLeod does sell and adapter ring, but your bearing retainer will require some machining to create a stepped edge to hold it in place.

  Ok.
Edmond is just up the road.  You can see everything off the car at http://www.dalesplace.com/forsale/trans.htm.
I missed getting a few bolts (trans to bellhousing comes to mind).  All
it's really missing is the frame bracket for the ball stud, the ball stud for
the engine and it could definately use a boot for the fork.  Clutch and
disc you may want to use for cores although there in good shape...I would
trade them for new ones just because it's already out and wouldn't have to do
it again in 6-mo or a year.  I also have a brand new spherical clutch
linkage kit from Speed Direct (http://www.speeddirect.com/images/pages/clutch_linkage_large.jpg)
that I never got around to installing that goes with
  it.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Bellhousing question...

2002-08-16 Thread Chevelle 69

Gents,
I know this one. It's weird, but true..I know because I have one!

In the beginning of the 80's GM started buying "New Process" trannies
from Chrysler and made the 4th gear in these trannies less than a 1:1
ratio to improve gas milage and I assume to meet the new tougher federal
fuel economy requirements. Just a guess on why here. So the bolt pattern
fits on GM engines and supposedly this thing will swap out straight with
a TH350 because they are the same exact length when all is said and
done...or within a 1/4 inch or so, from what I have read.

In any case, up until somewhere between the mid and late 80's these 4
speed trannys were used in the Chevy Trucks. They are obviously beefier
in at least some respects than a car tranny. How much and in what ways I
am not sure, not an expert on them here, but I do have some resources on
the net bookmarked on them.

I have that same exact bellhousing or I might be bidding on that one. I
bought it for the fact that I was told it was a stronger tranny AND the
fact that 4th gear is an overdrivewill make for better mileage on
long trips to car shows. I don't have mine in yet, and have yet to find
someone that have put one in and has used it yet. Several are in the
process of doing so however.

I find it interesting because the 396 engine I bought came out of a
truck as well. Now all I need is a truck posi unit for the rear and I
can really "HAUL" in my Chevelle :)

Steve

Duh. Yeah, I did mean the 621 Kurt. The auction you sent mentions that it
won't fit a M-22 and is truck only. Mine was hooked to a M-21 in my
Chevelle. H.

Josh,
You probably mean the '621' bellhousing for the 11" clutch. I've
got one of those bells. Anyhow here is a link to an auction on ebay for the
'486' bellhousing you mention. The seller claims it can fit up to a 12"
clutch. HTH.

[Chevelle-List] Bellhousing question...

2002-08-16 Thread NoNeck

I am cleaning out my garage because we are moving, and I'm listing a bunch
of stuff on Ebay. I am getting rid of an aluminum bellhousing that I had on my
454 with 11 inch clutch. All the ones on ebay are 681's, but this is part number
460486. Anybody know anyhting about this bell? I thought only the 681's were for
the big clutch, but this one looks almost identical to the 681. I believe it was
from a 72 Chevelle originally but I cant find any other casting numbers on it.
Even the 460486 seems like a weird number as it is a different configurarion
than usual .Didn't most Chevy numbers start with 3? and have 7 digits? If anyone
here is interested, I have pics. I'll take any reasonable offer also.
Thanks!
