Clint has a good point, especially about people removing shrouds. People do
that all the time and then wonder why their car is running 20-40 degrees
higher than it was before.

You missed my point which is the biggest radiator in the world won't be the
answer unless you have enough air circulation/flow. Most of the stock
radiators in our cars are fine,,they just don't work sometimes people
install substandard flex fans,remove shrouds,etc.

I never took my Mark VIII fan set-up out of the box,Al,so I can't give you
anymore particulars at the moment. Was going to use a DC Controls controller
to activate the fan but never got around to buying one. The only reason I
sold my fan was my car cools very well with the stock shroud and VA clutch
fan set-up on the Frontrunner. Will probably buy another Mark VIII set-up
when I build a new engine for the car.

They flow over 4600cfm. Another option is to ditch that flex fan,get a six
or seven blade fan from Vintage Air,and run it with a good clutch unit.

Hi I am in a debate with my self. I can not decide on going with an

electric

fan or get a new fan shroud and stay with the flex fan I have now. I have

a

70ss built 454 with an auto trans. If I go with an electric what size and
how many should I go with and should I use a set temperature sensor for

If you use a fan and proper shroud you should be OK. I had no
problems until my clutch fan came apart. If you choose an electric I
would dig out out of a newer vehicle. I am running a twin setup out
of an early 90s's F-body. They fit my 70 radiator pretty well and
pull enough air.

A Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan set-up will cool just about anything,Al.
They flow over 4600cfm. Another option is to ditch that flex fan,get a six
or seven blade fan from Vintage Air,and run it with a good clutch unit.

Naturally, if itworks, that's probably just fine, but that doesn't mean

That's comparing apples to oranges, they are not the same thing.  We
are discussing cooling systems here, not electronics.  I stated facts I
have observed from personal experience.  I had electric fans on my 70 and
they didn't do the job that the factory system does.As for flex fans, the
blades become flatter against 1 geometric plane as engine RPM increases thusly
pulling less air through the radiator.

In response to the OP, I say go ahead and try an electric fan. With a big
inch engine like the 454, you'll probably need two fans. The size(s) depends
on which fan you buy. Take a look at SummitRacing.com or Jegs, because
there's a lot of choices.

Flex fans suck, period. Get rid of it and put on a stock 7 blade
19" fan with a heavy duty clutch and use the 71-72 Chevelle big block fan
shroud, all the resto parts suppliers have them. Remember, factory setups
worked back when the engineers designed them 35 years ago, they will still
work today. I myself am running a 500 HP 454/TH400 combo and the temp in
mine never goes over 210 while idling in the summer.
As for the bumper pad, use 3M Super Weatherstrip adhesive, just make
sure you trace the pattern on the bumper with a sharpie, then scuff the
bumper with some 180 grit sandpape. Do the same with the bumper pad. This
will assist adhesion.

I had trouble with my 327 heating up on hot days...I ditched the flex fan
and went with a Flex-a-lite Black Magic electric fan with adjustable
thermostatI also use a bottle of Redline Water wetter.I don't have
anymore problems..
