Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
Thank you all, for all your help. I found it. I was checking to make sure my turn signal dash bulbs were seated and I noticed the screw between the bulbs, going through the p.c. panel was not screwed all the way in. I tightened it, turned on my lights and the turn signal lights did not light up. Problem solved. Again, Thank you all. The fuel gauge is nothing more than an ohm meter and the sending unit is a 90 ohm variable resistor. If you want to make sure, ground the sending unit side of the gauge right at the dash that will eliminate the wiring to the sending unit and the gauge should go to empty. I doubt if it has a wiring problem because you have voltage at the tan wire. You can also substitute an ohm meter for the fuel gauge to test the sending unit and wiring 0 ohms will be empty 90 ohms will be full. I hope this helps, I have seen some good technicians confused by fuel gauge problems so you are not alone. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
At this point before I would buy new gages I would split the dash harness between the cluster plug and fuse box and check for melted or shorted wires. Also I would recheck all grounds to cluster and maybe run a direct ground from the battery to the cluster, straight wire. With the sending unit plugs disconnected and then shorted to ground you should have some type of movement in the gage. If there were a short or open in the harness nothing would change by removing the plugs from the senders. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
What you need to do now is with ign in run, go to the senders unplug them and check for voltage at the plug. Either with a voltmeter or test light. This is checking continuity from the gauges to the sender’s plugs. If you have continuity then there is a grounding issue. If you have no voltage at the unplugged sender plugs then there is open wire to the gauges. Leo
Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
Just a few questions. Can you start the engine? Are you sure the gauges are wired correctly? I understand your confusion, just went through this myself. I will start with the temp gauge. The sender is screwed into your block, head or manifold. This contact grounds the sending unit. The ground is not complete until it gets hot when a bimetal contact expands inside the sender. The wire to the sender goes to the back of the gauge. The other wire on the gauge goes to the fuse block and is hot in the “on” mode. In a stock GM harness several hot leads come together and are simply twisted and soldiered in a bunch with tape wrapped around it. If you have a test light check both sides of the fuse with the key on and off. If the light goes on and off at the fuse box using the key repeat the test at the back of the gauge. If the light fails at the back of the gauge try using a jumper wire straight from the fuse box. If this fails run a wire to the sending unit. If this fails replace sending unit. The secret is start where you know you have power test each link until you lose the power then back track. The sender has a float like the one in your toilet. As it goes up and down the resistance changes. Under the carpet is a flat harness that has a connector under the dash and under the back seat. The tan wire can be tested at both locations, these do not usually fail. So if you have power at the gas tank sending unit skip, testing those connections. The fuel gauge sender has one tan wire (hot) and one black ground. Check the tan wire with the test light. Turn the key to “on’ before you get under the car. If it is hot at the sender I would make sure the ground wire is good. The test light ground wire should be clipped on the sender where the normal ground wire is attached and the probe inserted into the connector on the tan wire this way you test your ground. If it fails move the ground of the test light to some part of the body. If it works then I would replace the end of the ground wire and clean all the rust around the screw hole in the body. One trip under the car is enough. If all this does not help I would suspect that you have wired the gauges incorrectly. Jim I appriciate your help. It seems to me Iam being told 2 different things here. Leo say's there should be no power at pins 10 and 11 and it sounds to me like your telling me there should be power at those pins. I dont understand the principles of operation here. I dont understand how they work.I hope someone here can explain to me exactly how it works. Does 12 volts go through the guage and the sending units add resistance to ground. Thanks every body for your help here. I just wanna get my guages working. - Original Message - From: "Jim Thompson" jimthompso...@gmail.com To: "The Chevelle Mailing List" Sent: Tuesday, February 2, 2010 7:10:29 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question I will suggest again that ground is critical. Below is a copy of the 12 pin plugs for both gauges & idiot lights. With the key in the RUN position you should have 12v at pin 7, the pink wire. Pin 10, green wire, is temp from engine, no power. Pin 11, brown wire is from gas tank sender, no power. Pin 6, Blue wire is for oil pressure light, no power. If you have power at pin 7, reconnect the plug to instrument cluster, with ign switch in the RUN position, disconnect the temp connector for the sender and ground it. The temp gauge to indicate full deflection. The same indication with the fuel wire grounded. The only time you should have power to the instruments is in the run position. I sure hope that this is helpful. My problem turned out to be the headlight switch. Power to the cluster passes through this switch. One of the spades slipped out aside the connector and was not making contact. Here is the topic on chevelles.com. It has some great pics and information to diagnose the headlight switch. It also includes information on the 12 pin connector and tests to verify voltage at the fusebox. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260728&highlight=hot+wires+SS+dash Dan "It is a mistake to allow any mechanical object to realize you are in a hurry." http://www.freewebs.com/chevelles1970/ Date: Mon, 1 Feb 2010 10:06:28 +0000 From: rml...@comcast.net To: Chevelle-list@chevelles.net Subject: [Chevelle-list] wiring question I set my restored dash in place and connected the wires, turned the key to acess. and my temp. fuel, and amp guages did nothing. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
Are the gauges new? How about the dash harness and the engine harness? Did the gauges work before you made your changes? The reason I ask is that the pins are in different locations at the firewall. If one harness is from a 70 and one from a 71-72 that may cause your problem. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
Thanks for raising this subject. Had a similar problem in that my park lights did not come on. Found that the Australian light switch does not have spade number six, therefore no parklights! Otherwise the same! Busy repairing the old switch. - Original Message - From: Dan Solomon To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 5:04 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question I had a hell of a time with the dash in my 70.
