Subject: [Chevelle-list] 70 SS 396 cu in engine sensor

Have enjoyed reading the emails and problem solving. This is my first
submission to Chevelle list.

On the passenger side of the engine, just below the valve cover and above
the exhaust manifold I

have what appears to be a temperature sensor with two spade lugs. My dash
temp gauge does work.

Saw the same senor on another car at a local cruz the other day and the
spade lugs were jumpered together

With a single wire going to the firewall harness.

What is the purpose of the sensor and spade connectors?

Thanks for any info.

Dave

Re: [Chevelle-list] 70 SS GRILLE/and grill paint in general

2007-04-28 Thread Tom Tomlinson
I'm replacing the grille on my '71 Malibu. I have a replacement from
Year One which is a gray plastic, but I would like to paint it the
original silver color. I have the original grille to try and match the
paint , but I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the correct
paint? It also has some areas blacked out, where the screw mounting
holes are.

Also, how should the grille surface be prepared for painting? Should it
be sanded with a fine sandpaper to scuff up the surface? Is there a
primer that should be used?

Thanks for you help.

Thanks. I think I would like to not bother pretending that it's an SS and
put the Malibu 350 badges back on the fenders, and leave the Malibu trim
on since it is so nice. I saw the 1970 paint chart and maroon metallic
(looks like #78) is really nice. The car was originally medium blue metallic
(#25). I'm not wild about red #75. The Castillian Bronze (dark red) #67 is
nice. The bright dark blues and the buckskin, dark green, dark grey mist,
and dark taupe are all nice too. I think dark taupe might be my fave. I'll
have to see a real paint chart rather than one on the web.

There's a medium gold one and a dark green one in my neighborhood. Both are
four-door Malibus driven by old men, and they are both dented to heck.

Numbers do not mean anything in 1970. The SS was an option on the
Malibu series. You could order the U14 instrumentation on a Malibu as well
as a big block.

Thanks Tom. The current owners live in North East believe it

I was able
to ascertain that it was not an original SS car. I finally spoke to the husband
and he said that it was a 350/TH350 Malibu. All the trim is there though and it
looks pretty ok in pictures for what they are asking. There is one big dent in
the right rear quarter that the owner says was not there when he put the car
away, and there are some scratches on the trunk lid. Its also evident that
there has been some bondo used, but it looks pretty good overall for the price.

I'm ok with the idea that it's a Malibu and not an SS. I'll feel less guilty

Hi,
What I remember is up to 69 it was a 396 and after 70 the bore was
increased .030 which made it a 402 but was still badged and called a 396.
Some cars like the Monte Carlo and I think full size it was refered to as a
400 Big Block and they also had the 400 Small Block to make it more
confusing...

I don't know why they went .030 over, maybe they had a bunch of blocks they
were able to rework with the over bore? Anyone know why they went .030 over?

I think that it was other way around.. in 70 (71?) and later, what they were
calling 396s were actually 402s. 402 = .030-over 396, I believe.

Before '70, GM had a restriction of no more than 400ci in a mid-size.

GM had a policy in the 60's that all mid size and smaller cars couldn't
have engines over 400 CI. The policy was changed in the 70's to allow the
454's and 455's in Chevelles, 442s, GTOs, and Buick GSs.

I've heard 'stories' that due to a strike in late 1969, blocks sat around
and got rusty. There were some 402's in late 69 (noted by the 3-letter
suffix code). When the strike was over the blocks had to bored .030 for
cleanup and since pistons had to be changed, GM kept it that way. I don't
buy that for a minute. Probably had more to do with meeting emission
standards than anything else. FWIW, Buick managed to get over on the ban
since there engine was really the same 401 as the rest of the line but
advertised it as a 400 until the ban was lifted.

 Hi,
What I remember is up to 69 it was a 396 and after 70 the bore was
increased .030 which made it a 402 but was still badged and called a 396.
Some cars like the Monte Carlo and I think full size it was refered to as
a
400 Big Block and they also had the 400 Small Block to make it more
 confusing...
I don't know why they went .030 over, maybe they had a bunch of blocks
they
were able to rework with the over bore? Anyone know why they went .030

Re: [Chevelle-list] 70 ss only

I've tried to dig up some official original factory documentation on the
396/402 change, but came up empty. I remember seeing/reading something
years ago, and the reason stated in the article discussing the 402 (396ci
+.030) was to produce a more favorable bore/stroke ratio in the pursuit of
reduced emissions.

Back then, emission controls were in their infancy and the OE's were trying
lots of different methods to help them mitigate the expulsion of unburned
hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. Playing with bore/stroke ratios was one
of them. Some of you may also remember the 307 small-block, which was
contrived by combining the 327 stroke and a 283 bore. It, too, was an
experiment in emissions reduction.

Getting back to the 402, it was first introduced in late-production '69
Chevelles, and the easiest way to ID them is the addition of a C prefix to
the engine code stamped on the front of the engine block. For instance, a
normal 396/350hp/4spd Chevelle engine would have a JC engine code, while
the 402 version of the same engine would feature a CJC stamping on the
front of the block. The addition of the C prefix carried over to the '70
and subsequent engine codes. To the best of my knowledge, the 402
supplanted the 396 in all '70 and later Chevys.

As for retaining the '70 SS396 moniker (even though the engine actually
displaced 402ci), that was a marketing ploy pure and simple. Since it's
inception in '66, the SS396 just kinda rolled off the tongue easy and became
synonymous with Chevy high performance. Understandably, Chevy was reluctant
to give up the equity they had in such a catchy name and kept it as long as
they could. In '71, however, the Super Sport with the 402ci big-block was
referred to as merely an SS, and the 396 emblems that hung below the SS
badges on the fenders were eliminated as well.

Please feel free to add or edit my recollections if your differ from mine...

RE: [Chevelle-List] 70 SS wheels and tires size

2002-09-05 Thread Craig A. Ellis

Galen,

They are 4.25 back with a -06 offset (see http://www.edelbrockwheels.com/wheelcatalogdetail.asp?wheel=409).
No significant rubbing. Occassionally, if I've got the wheels to full right lock
and hit a bump going uphill (see what I mean about "occassionally), the left
front tire will contact an inner fender attachment bolt head. Some day I'll get
around to grinding off the head or putting a panhead screw in there or
something. Meanwhile, I'm just careful entering and exiting parking
lots..!

Really, no problems to speak of so far. But
it's worthwhile to remember I have new Eaton Detroit BB springs up front and
fresh control arm bushings, ball joints and other stuff. The running gear is,
for all intents and purposes, all new. I've been told to be careful buying front
springs on a "deal" because they'll sag in pretty short order where the Eaton
springs will maintain their stance over time. I don't know if this is true, but
Eaton is just down the road from me so I ran with the idea. Also, they'll work
with you to swap springs in out until you get exactly the right look,
too.

They ride a tad harder than stock due to
reduced sidewall but it's a non-issue in a performance car, IMHO. Also, being so
wide, they like to "track" a bit, but again, not really an issue for me.

altering the wheel wells. What brand of tire looks/works well for the
street?Thanks.Dale

AndreWe love the house...it's perfect for us both. I guess there'll never be
a car in the garage (my shop is in there and I'm getting busier every day). So
if I ever get the 70 SS I want it'll have to go somewhere else. But the place is
great, got a park out front and a "mountain" in the backyard. It doesn't get
much better than this in the city

Subject: [Chevelle-List] 70 SS guage set
  and wiring harness

Hey fellas, I've got a used '70 SS guage set
(w/tach) and wiring harness (non-A/C). I'm in the middle
ofperforming a swap into my non-SS '71 Chevelle with A/C(I know
we've all been through the SS/non-SS discussion before, I don't want to get
  that stirred up again).

Anyway, while performing the swap, I became aware
of the many differences between a '70 and a '71 harness, and between an SS and
a non-SS harness. If anyone out there has a '71 SS guage set and wiring
harness (for a car with A/C), I'd be glad to make a trade for my '70 SS guage
set and wiring harness which is non-A/C. I think this would simplify the
installation process by not having to reconcile these differences
myself. So, ifany of you would like tomake a trade, let me
know and maybe we can work something out.

  Thanks,
  Galen Love
