I have
purchase 2 of their harness's and they worked well. They have a # to call if you
have trouble, or is something is not OEM, or incorrect. I did that on 1 harness
and they built me a NEW one, N.C. I would recommend their product and customer
svc!! Cost was in the $90 area for engine, front light harness in the $130/150.
Not worth my time to disassemble a 33 year old harness for repair and
rewrap!!!

Dear
Crazy Rusty,

Is this the original wiring in the car? Judging from the "rats nest" you said
you see under the dash, I am guessing that it is original. You had your car in
the shop to be repaired after it was damaged? I am guessing again that you have
a fair amount of money invested in this car?

I am
going to make one last guess and say that you actually like this car to be
investing lots of money into it?

"Crazy"the insulation that was barely adequate 35 years ago is
now brittlein places andthat insulation canactually come off
and what ifsay lots of electricity started flowing when it wasn't
supposed to?

Just
how "crazy" would you get if your baby went up in flames?

Should
you be checking bulbs you ask? If this is the original harness, you should be
checking into the price of a new one!

Just
my opinion.

A New dash Harness my be the
answer... But B-4 you go that route.. Let's check a few things
frist.
You say ALL you dash lamps are
none funtional... ( the dash and shifter lamps are the SAME
circuit)
if the fuse is good and you have
voltage athe fuse block, the next place to look is the Light Switch . The
instrument lamps
get voltage in park and headlamp
position, and also run through the internal variable-resister.
It you have voltage at
switch input and switched on... out-put ( will vary) voltage. Then the
time has come to dive into your "RAT's NEST" it my be a good time to do a
little springcleaning...while your at it...
You did not say what year
car you have.. but the tehnique
to wring out a circuit is straight forward and verifiable
either starting from the source (
my preferred methoud) or the load(lamp in your case)
end.

Clint,
Theirs are the only ones I use... certainly not the least expensive, but IMO they are the best. Correct gauge wire, colors and terminal ends, and great customer service, too. Plus, if you need something special (like converting to an HEI, or adding an MSD ignition, or electric fans) added to the harness, they will do it and it'll look just like factory.

If you're looking for totally original-style harnesses, however, I believe you can buy them for a little less from one of their distributors, than direct. I know Year One carries them...

Yep! Plus, depending on how your Chevelle is optioned out you may also have additional harnesses for the A/C, an AM-FM/tape/stereo, rear defogger, power windows, locks, etc. No matter, though, Clint, they make repros for all those applications. And, as stated earlier, they'll custom-manufacture a harness for almost anything you want to add to the electrical system. Just ask...

I can pretty much gauruntee you have a bad ground somewhere. I have this problem in my 70 and I know that it is the circuit board on the back of the dash. It happens when a hot wire touches metal. I had the same problem in my 69 and it ended up being the headlight switch was shot. I put a new one in and it worked great. I seriously doubt you need a new dash harness. They don't really go bad unless you have a meltdown of some sort. Both of my cars have the original harnesses in them and they work great for being 34/35 years old. Try the simplest things first before diving into harness replacement. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for all
your suggestions. I am going to do some more troubleshooting this weekend
based on those suggestions to see whats up. I know my headlight
switch needs to be replaced for a fact so that could play into it.
Everything in the car is original with the exception of the gauges so it really
is a total mess. Just hooking up my power antenna I found 5 different
wires that were about 5 feet long and didnt actually go anywhere
Plus I found a CB radio antenna kind of strange.

I put the rally gauges in it last year and
took out the idiot lights. For that fact alone I will be getting a new
wiring harness fairly soon because I just dont trust my own handy work
(even though the gauges work).
