RE: [Chevelle-list] HEI tune-up kits
Actually, a daily driver is a good place for a high-perf ignition. There’s really no downside, other than the initial cost, as opposed to a cam, where a ‘better’ performance cam is offset by rougher idle, worse mileage, etc. I did two upgrades on the ignition in my Chevelle. The first time was just a basic tune-up – cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and coil. I don’t have the numbers to back it up, but I did start getting better mileage (it took me less gas to get to the drag strip!). A year later, I added an MSD 6AL and I noticed it would start and run better when cold. An MSD box might be a little more than necessary for a daily driver, but I’m a believer in bigger, better spark since re-doing my stuff. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of Brian Zack Sent: Thursday, August 07, 2003 1:28 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Chevelle-list] HEI tune-up kits If one of the upgrade kits don’t work, I may change out my HEI distributor to one of these. Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI tune-up kits
The stock Chevy HEI works pretty well on a street engine. Just use good wires and lighter springs to match your engine/trans/gear combo. The crane adjustable vac canister and spring kit is a good low cost modification to help fine tune it. MSD stuff is good for racing but not really needed on street engine. That money can be put to better use in another area in my opinion - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, August 08, 2003 1:59 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI tune-up kits I used the HEI that was in the motor. Since this was in just a daily driver my friend did not want to spend $350.00 on a MSD unit. my first MSD unit cost me over $300.00 when it failed and blew out a brand new exhaust system. Why I bought another MSD unit is beyond me. I will say I have never been a fan of stock HEI units and have had my share of problems with them.
