You make it sound like some of one has to be sacrificed to achieve the other, thereby necessitating a balance? I don't think there needs to be a balance at all. I isolated the dead lock to PCMWaveOutAudioOutputStream and created a test
can easily
reproduce such dead lock:
1. Apply attached patch file (dead_lock.patch)
2. Build media_unittests
3. Connect to a remote computer with above steps 1 - 5
4. run: media_unittests --gtest_filter=WinAudioTest.PCMWaveStreamDeadLock
in the
debugger
You'll notice a dead lock pretty easily.

Uncheck Lock the taskbar, check Auto-hide the taskbar, and check Keep the taskbar on top of other windows 3. Press OK 4. Start Chromium, make sure the taskbar is auto-hidden 5. Since testers use remote desktop extensively for testing video, this
becomes a
bigger problem and may impose potential deadlock for other sound driver too.
Also report my findings about hacking waveout_output_win.cc, from the stack
trace it
looks like the lock happens in waveOutWrite() in Start() and
WaveCallback(). It looks
like to me the fact that we are calling waveOutWrite in two threads is
causing the
deadlock. I tried to wrap the loop of Start() that calls waveOutWrite()
with a pair
of waveOutPause() and waveOutRestart() I don't get the deadlock anymore,
e.g.:
Start() {
...
::waveOutPause(waveout_);
for (int ix = 0; ix != kNumBuffers; ++ix) {
::waveOutWrite(waveout_, ...);
}
::waveOutRestart(waveout_);
}
If calling waveOutPause() does inhibit winmm from calling us from another
thread,
this maybe a solution to solve the deadlock. Any thoughts?

request contexts (off the record, media), and the current way it is being
shared could result in free memory read/writes during shutdown.

I just checked the behavior described in http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-reviews/browse_thread/thread/878579dd61c53a00 /213560d76d537337 , and it doesn't seem to work on my build -- single-clicking in the url box clobbers X's clipboard. This is definitely a bug, no? The reason I say it's still odd, even if working as described in the referenced discussion is that by highlighting the url selection, you are giving the user an affordance that says this text is now on the clipboard. If the text isn't really on the clipboard (and I 100% agree that you shouldn't require clobbering X's paste buffer just to type in a new url), it's misleading and weird. I applaud efforts to make common operations simple, and this seems to fall in that category. Looking at the test, I can see how this could happen. This requires running the constructor on startup, which we don't want for a variety of reasons. One of the solutions is something like LazyInstance (see base/lazy_instance.h), but depending on how the code is written there is usually a few other possible approaches. We're here talking about a *list*, so anybody should be able to determine that it will not only remove the download from the shelf, but also from the downloads list. The problem with your solution is that it would lead to a modification of the current behavior of the feature. Either the Chromium team is ready to change its behavior and then your suggestion would be OK, either the menu item could be renamed to Remove from downloads list. LDD on chrome do not report any lack. I got this problem from build 23544 but I'm not sure if that was happening with previous ones.
