I don't think applying the headers will immediately increase the number
of developers, but it sure will increase the number of people using
Cinelerra. And the more people using the software, the bigger the chance
is that some devs will step up and will help coding. Remember that
Ubuntu has a _lot_ of potential users for Cinelerra.

So does this mean per file or in the root dir? The consensus within
Debian seems to be every file.

In the end Ill contact the FSF for clarification.

So does this mean per file or in the root dir? The consensus within

Also if you read the other posts, muzzol has stepped up and offered to
do the patch if needed.

i believe there was talk about _exactly_ this few months ago on this
list.

It was resolved by someone contacting Adam and getting clearance for the
code he wrote. Now someone must check if there are any other files in
the tree and clear up all of the cases.

So ... you only need time.

I've wrote a few files in CVS version... and as far as i am concerned
they can be licenced under GPL 2 or any later revision.

Re: [CinCVS] HDV to DVD (interlaced and PAL)

2007-01-30 Thread Dan Streetman

It can be done with 2 effects. Note if you are converting to NTSC
(720x480) you cannot do this unless you add back in the "1080 to 480"
effect that was removed or "changed" to 1080x540 some time ago. I
have no idea why it was removed/changed.

- load HDV file, do "resize track" and make sure it's 1440x1080
- add "1080 to 540" effect, select the right ?-fields-first mode (top or bottom)
(you have to add back in the "1080 to 480" effect if converting to NTSC)
- add "translate" effect:
 "In X" and "In Y" : both 0
 "In W" and "In H" : 1440 x 1080
 "Out X" : 360 (i.e. this is ((1440 - 720) / 2) so if original is
1920 wide use 635)
 "Out Y" : 270 (i.e. this is ((1080 - 540) / 2) so if target is NTSC use 300)
 "Out W" : 720
 "Out H" : 1080 (the "1080 to 540" effect does height conversion)
- make sure the project is 720x540 (for PAL, 720x480 for NTSC)

that's it.

There is an alternate possibility using "frames->fields", "translate",
and "fields->frames" but the field/frame effects need to be changed
first to have an option to not double the lines, so that the translate
effect can work correctly on each field.

If you're the copyright holder, then your actions can't be GPL violations;
you don't need a license for your own work. Just because you intend to
put something under the GPL doesn't mean you're REQUIRED to give notice of
that intent in a particular form. Furthermore, there's nothing in the GPL
saying that it's only valid if mentioned in every source file, and it
would make no sense for that to be a requirement for GPL validity because
in many cases it would be impossible to comply with. This is, at most, a
violation of Ubuntu's policy.

However, it's an easily resolved one - let's just put the notice in every
source file. Does Ubuntu have a precise definition of exactly what notice
they want in every source file? I'm put off if they claim "we require
what the GPL requires" because that's nonsense - the GPL doesn't and can't
require any such thing - but at the same time, it's more important to
satisfy Ubuntu on this point than to convince them.

Sorry if this sounds unreasonable, but we all have things we would like

Consider this... It would be easier for CinelerraCV if the GPL license
was applied first to Heroine's tree. To that end, someone would need to
generate a patch against Heroine's sources and submit it upstream. Then
it could be merged at our next release from upstream (2.2? 3.0?)

Who using Debian or Ubuntu would like to step up and tackle that?

True. So why hasnt this been done already?

Ive been told the license file in the root dir is correct but
insufficient for Debian packaging rules.

So if that license file is correct, and the devs are *sure* *every* file
and part of code is GPL we should be able to make the assumption that
the files are cool and add the header to the files.

We have permission to do this but it would be better to work upstream to
get this done. ie: a patch or something.

Re: [CinCVS] Wiki - HDV 1080i workflow

2007-01-30 Thread Nicolas Maufrais
Marcin,

I moved, after having modified it, the contents of that page to the
manual.

I know you would like a page dedicated to the HDV workflow, but thanks
for understanding the following points:
- if the "wiki" is edited the way a "normal" wiki is, it will soon
become a real mess. The wiki is there to allow people to edit the
  manual.
- arranging the information in a good way (ie. copy it in the manual)
  is a real pain.
- a manual is 10 times better than a wiki, because it's easier to read.

I hope this doesn't hurt you. I *DO* appreciate you took time to wrote
that *interesting* HDV workflow. In the past, I already asked people for
such information. Thanks a lot.
But as the documentation maintainer, I have to make sure the
documentation is correctly laid out. This implies some constraints, such
as the edit I did.

I did not deleted the page you created. You can have a look at its
history to find the page as it was in the past. That can allow you to
compare it to what I copied in the manual here:
http://cvs.cinelerra.org/docs/wiki/doku.php?id=english_manual:cinelerra_cv_en_20#hdv_1080i_editing_using_proxy_files

Thank you very much for describing your HDV workflow.

Nicolas Maufrais.

To clarify reprioritization from critical:

A '100% failure' bug like this is assigned Severity=minor and Priority=medium
which I reason we're not treating Severity literally; it will be treated as a
combined severity-plus-priority project development planning metric?

how to use it.
Thanks a lot

erm... yes! i tried now again (after thomas' weirdest way)
and yes, same result, although it took some seconds,
so i guess it did some lookup... don't know.

my machine is not-so-fresh, as you say,
but all the cinelerra-related stuff is fresh, maybe that's why?
anyhow i am happy with thomas' weird solution, it works.

thanks both

Most non-Linux users would need to install a player.

A powerful Xeon would do, too. I tried editing HDV in Cinelerra with a
single-CPU 3.4 GHz Xeon in 2005, and it worked quite well. Cinelerra
could maintain a full framerate during playback on that machine.

Hello,

Please edit the wiki section about installing Cinelerra on Redhat:
http://cvs.cinelerra.org/docs/wiki/doku.php?id=english_manual:cinelerra_cv_en_2#redhat

I'll then update the getting_cinelerra.php page with that contents.

Re: [CinCVS] OMF support

2007-01-30 Thread Matt Pfingsten

OMF stands for Open Media Framework. It is an EDL interchange format
invented by Avid in the mid-90's. It's considered a defacto standard in the
industry. Its my understanding that in spite of this it has always been
plagued with compatibility woes due to several factors:
1) It's an extremely complex format
2) It's not a very strict specification
3) Avid frequently updates the format in order to 'encourage' the users of
its products to upgrade their Avid editors and ProTools software (Avid owns
DigiDesign) and to give themselves an extra advantage over competing DAW's
which have to update their software in order to accept OMF's from the new
Avid software.

There are many other EDL formats besides OMF such as AAF and Apple's new XML
Interchange Format. AAF is probably supported by whatever DAW your co-worker
is using.

At the moment Cinelerra doesn't export to any EDL format besides CMX3600 and
then only at 25fps. There is a project on SourceForge that can convert a
CMX3600 EDL into an AAF file:

Perhaps that could work. Let us know how you end up solving this issue.

Re: [CinCVS] Video transition not working?

2007-01-30 Thread mark stavar

I have found a similar problem with DV. I would play through transitions
and they won't work.

Then I stumbled on a note somewhere about "slow" effects and turning off
"playback" where repositioning the cursor. So I tried that.

1. Turn off playback for the track with the transition (the little right
arrow/triangle in the pathch bay)
2. Position the cursor at the start of the track
3. Toggle playback back on
4. Press "Play" (Space bar or button) and the transition effect then works.

But I pretty much have to do that every time I want to go back to the start
of the track. Very poor for workflow I am afraid.

Hope this is useful.

Ciao,

marks

When working with mjpegs (HDV proxy), basically when in all alpha
color models "dissolve" does not work properly.

I will file it as a bug with sample project (ASAP), but just was wandering
if anybody encountered it.

Support for Ogg Theora on the proprietary platforms is easily installable
using either DirectShow filters available at http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/
or the Quicktime Component available at http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/

Also, VideoLan supports Theora natively regardless of platform and can be
found on http://www.videolan.org/

Interesting. The big question is if Ogg Thera video format is cross OS
platform and video players compatible?

i dont see this queston so big as long as there's only linux version
of cinelerra.
