CCNP1 vs 2 Questions, (was Re: CCNP 2.0 objectives!! U asked for them!)

2000-06-18 Thread Venkat

Hello,

"Also I have it on good authority (rumor) that the CCNPs version 1 will
have
to recert prior to Jan 01 to maintain their cert"
--
1) Does anybody know exactly what is the process for "re-certification"?

2) Do we need to take the regular 50x CCNP2 exam OR will there be
separate
e-Certification Exams?

3) I am a CCNA/CCDA now studying for CCNP, if I have to take the Regular
CCNP2(50x) Exams to maintain Qualification, may be it is better to just
go for
the 50x exams now, right?

4) Also, Can I take the ACRC, and CLSC before July 31, and take the
BCRAN, and
CIT2 after July 31 and still be CCNP1, or do you lose all chance of
becoming
CCNP1.0 after July 31?

If anybody has more info on the RE-Certification Process along with any
suggestions, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Venkat

Re: Cisco Documentation CD

2000-06-18 Thread SteveS

I agree, spent too much time uninstalling and reinstalling just trying to
get something out of my CD's. Even looked at Adobe's reader and found a
Verity search engine add-on in their. Plus Cisco CD's wants old QTIme
technology. GO figure.

I think it sucks big time. why couldn't they make a better
documentation
CD ? Does it make any sense for a company like Cisco to stick to a dying
platform like Netscape ? That browser has so many incompatiblities with
standards, it's hard to believe!! And this was true even before the AOL
 acquisition.

I tried the latest documentation CD - I think I have March 2000. The CD
says
I can set it up to use it with IE! However, after installation, it craps
 out!

I can't even open simple HTML docs on the documentation CD (on Windows
2000) - all I get is garbled text!! Now, isn't HTML supposed to be read
equally well by all browsers ???

Please help Cisco!! A lot of us are now using Windows 2000 (it works great
on laptops, btw!! Much better than any other OS I've ever used!!), and
probably the majority of us use IE now! Don't shut us out of the
 Documentation CD please!!

The CD's search engine uses Verity's search engine. This is waht their
FAQ
  says:

No, the current release of CD Web Publisher will not work on Windows
2000. Windows 2000 has significant architecture changes from its
predecessors. As a result, your current CD Web Publisher application
will
not work. Support for Windows 2000 is planned. This support will require
the creation of a new application (i.e.: you will not be able to add
this
  functionality into your existing application).

So ... we'll just to wait and see

Re: DSL router with dialup backup

2000-06-18 Thread SteveS

Ole,

DSL does go down, but it is getting better. if you are using your local
Telco for the service then your phone line should be up 100%. When using a
modem on the same line you will be limited to 28.8k, if you want to use
33.6k you will have to use another phone line for that, and if you are going
to use a v.90 connection to the internet and then use PPTP you definitely
will have to use another phone line for backup.

That will give you 56k down, 33.6 up.

B/up dial up can be a good thing to have for the infrequent times you need
it.

As to your printing, it all depends on the printer definitions at the local
sites. You will need a printer driver local, and one wan if you want to use
the print server.

A good thing to have here is Win2000 terminal server.

If I get ADSL Internet access with my local telco, the DSL can run on one
of
my existing phone lines, and by using VPN I can create a connection
between
a branch office and the head office.

If I choose to have route redundancy by using a DSL router that have the
ability to use a modem, and then setup an additional 56Kbps modem route
with
a higher cost, it should dial my head office in case the DSL route goes
 down.

BUT, has anyone ever seen the ADSL being down but the phone line still up?

Also, how often does it happen that a DSL connection is down?

A third (off topic / off the subject) question:

I currently have a mixed Novell NetWare 4.1 and Windows NT 4.0 network
with
HP printers connected to the network with HP jetdirect nic's. I am
currently
using Novell's print queues for the net print services (which is working
very well), but I would like to use my Novell server as a boat anchor, and
I
have not had to good experience with NT's print services, and I would like
to be able to print directly to the printer at my branch offices, instead
of
having the data sent over and back the WAN first. Using Windows 98
workstations, what would be a good way of solving this problem?

Thanks for any comments on this,

 Ole

Link Flapping

2000-06-18 Thread Marco Rodrigues

Hey all, i've looked in the archives and can't really find an answer. I'm
currently studying for my CCDA and I was doing a BOSON test question and I
came accross the term, link flapping in coherence with Convergence. I've
never heard that term, i've looked at the Appendices/Glossary of my CCDA
book and in the archives of this mailing list and couldn't find an answer.
Just curious does this word even exsist? If so how does it relate to
convergence.

Thanks!

A few quick questions about CCNA 1.0 format:
1. Does a question let you know if a it requires multiple answers?
2. Any appletalk questions?
3. Any ATM configuration questions?
4. Any VLAN question (noticed this is heavily focus in CCNA 2.0)

Many thanks.

Re: Link Flapping

2000-06-18 Thread C. Warren

It bascially refers to a link going up and down continually, causing routing
protocols to go into action.
Another term you'll hear is "route flapping."

I bought ICRC and Lammle's CCNA last year, but never quite found the time
to
read it until now. Just when I was eager to read and take the exam this
summer, I found out about CCNA 2.0 and that CCNA 1.0 exam was expiring on
 July 31st.

Let's see, would I be qualified to take the CCNP 2.0 exams, after CCNA
1.0?
or would I have to start new and take CCNA 2.0 anyways? Would it be
advisable to take the 1.0 or 2.0 exam at THIS very point?

And Microsoft wants me to take the Win2K accelerated exam by the end of
this
 year. Pressure Pressure.

alternative for specific packet filtering

2000-06-18 Thread D. J. Jones

I've been reading and trying to understand interior redistribution and came
across the following technique as an alternative for the specific packet
filtering requirement of discarding certain packets based solely on their
destination address.

In this case Cisco static route command are used to discard packets destined
to private address space using null0. Here is an example:

ip route 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0.0 null0

My question is whether it is possible to show the system log and display the
number of times a packet was discarded destined to private or RFC1918
address space. If the logs showed that, would it also show the source?

I don't have a test lab setup to try this but was hoping someone on the list
has experience with this. Thanks for you help..

Re: Cisco service aggrement

2000-06-18 Thread SteveS

Stephen,

This mystical nirvana is CCO...Ta Daa. You will need a mystical logon ID and
mystical password.

To get those you must pay cold real hard cash. This is not the easiest thing
to do, and the only solution I have found is to call Cust Service, bow down
before them, and pay through the nose.

While it might not be expensive as a business cost (can be written off) as a
learning tool it is prohibitively expensive. There is much useful info
therein, a NG of sorts, support, and code that we all dream of.

As you must have found out, it is not the easiest place to sort info, but
getting better, a very frustrating experience to gather certain types of
info. But it does have some good points.

I wish there was some kind of student discount, as in MS products.

Maybe I have been over looking something on Cisoc.com, or maybe not :) I
recently acquired several 2524's to study with and start my lab. They
all
have 11.0. what ever on them. I have been told that Cisco offers service
agreements whereby IOS's can be updated on the Router that the contract is
taken out on and I would very much like to update one of mine to a newer
version.:( I haven't found the place yet or maybe I'm to impatient.
Please, Where the heck is this mythical "cisco" nirvana.
